Re: [slim] Re: Discrete on/off codes for Harmony 880

2006-06-01 Thread Danny Rego

You just need to give it clear view of your
devices, and avoid manually walking over to a device, and powering it up.
The HELP button fixes this in about 5 seconds as well.

All I know is, the 880 is the first remote I've
owned that not only replaced EVERY OTHER remote I have (12 of them), but is also
easy enough for the wife to use.

I like my Harmony 880 remote, but I disagree that it in any way solves

track, but in my experience, often ends up "out-of-sync" with the devices

If you change the remote transmitting interval, the brigthness funtion
will work well during firmware updates or changing from server to
squeezenetwork (or set the update funtion to automatic for firmware
updates on the client).
If set the intervall to 0 on my 885 Harmony.

Check the harmony settings FAQ on the settings page and search for the

How do I change the length of the infrared command being transmitted?

Re: [slim] harmony 880 and squeeze 3

2006-05-15 Thread Danny Rego
I am using a harmony 880 with the SB, and it's a complete dream. The only
thing that's a pain, is when I upgrade slimserver, and I need to hold down
the BRIGHTNESS key for the firmware update...that doesn't seem to work, but
I think that's more a product of how I programmed the remote.

Also...to get more out of the remote (and to have a discreet key for each
function), I used a ZENITH DVD set of codes, and a custom .IR file. (If
you'd like more info on that, I can send you the device I setup in the
remote, and the IR file if you'd like)

The Harmony 880 is a GREAT remote, and your significant other will
appreciate it. It's the first time I've owned a universal that actually
replaced every other remote I had, AND doesn't require the wife/girlfriend
to call me at work to ask me why something's not working or how to get it to
do this, or that.

(the only tricky part is explaining the HELP button the first time, as it's
quite a different concept)

Crisis absolutely!

Your post is very timely for me. To replace our dozen or more remotes,
I purchased a Harmony 880 after rave reviews, worked with it for several
hours programming it via the web interface, and sent the pile of crap
back for a refund. (if anyone cares for more details, i'll be happy to
give my list of overwhelming thumbs-down features). This device was to
replace our boxy Sony AV2000 (if i recall the model number correctly).

I've never found a single, reasonably-priced device that works well
enough to be the miracle cure. Every single one will have that one or
two things that doesn't work, where you have to break out the old
remote anyway.

Its a sad state that the amount of time searching for, programming, and
using these universal panaceas FAR exceeds their practicality,
usefulness and savings. I now find it easier to just click the amp
button a few feet away rather than worrying about finding a remote to
deal with the deficiencies of the dishplayer 942 universal-ish remote
we use 95% of the time to control our devices. I'm now in the 80/20
camp with remotes - get one that does the basics of what you do day to
day... and call it a day.

If you feel still inclined, here's the best review site i've seen:

[slim] Harmony Remote Users

2005-07-17 Thread Danny Rego

Any harmony remote users out there know/remember
how to setup their squeezebox on the remote, while making it think it's a
multi-disc changer? I wrote a plugin forslim serverthat will
create a CSV file for importing into your harmony remote that gives you
quick/instant access to particular playlists/albums via one touch of the LCD
buttons...but for the life of me, I can't find how/where to modify the
squeezebox to allow for multi-disc usage.

Hopefully someone our there can lend a hand...I
hope I didn't write this plugin for nothing!

(The plugin basically allows you to punch in a 4
digit disc number like 0001, and the squeezebox plays a specified playlist from
that number)

Anyways...any help is appreciated
here.

I'd like to see a new remote with more buttons, just for the simple
reason that I'd like to easily program my universal remote with all

of

the new/extra buttons.

So you want a new remote so you can use another remote? Odd.

It's not odd...it's the reason some use the JVC DVD remote
codes.dedicated FF/REW/PAUSE buttons for starters. It's a pain for the
average joe to dick around at this level. Especially when you are talking
universal learning remote, and you don't have a JVC DVD remote to start
with, and the default button layout is non-intuitive.

(I have done so using an old ZENITH DVD remote, but it's not the
sameand far more work than it's worth)

The standard remote that comes with the SB is TERRIBLE, and a
definite turn-off.

A Turn-off to you. One of the reasons I love the squeezebox is the
simplicity of the remote. I use my universal remote, but my wife
and kids use the squeezebox remote. It's simple and gets the job
done. If I wanted something more spectacular, I'd use my WiFi pda.

Simple and gets the job done is fine and dandy, but how about
intuitive...I doubt that dedicated FF/REW/PAUSE buttons would make the
remote intimidating.

Just hand the remote to someone, and see how long it is before you get the

Can you be more specific about what's terrible about the remote?

This is just my opinion...take from it what you will...

I don't like the multifunction buttons. I would rather see dedicated
FF/REW/PAUSE buttons. A few other quick access buttons would be nice as
well, such as ALBUMS, ARTISTS, PLAYLISTS, GENRES that would just
take you directly to the appropriate browse locations.

I know that you wouldn't want to overwhelm people with an overly complicated
remote, but I think those few extra buttons would make the SB much easier
(more intuitive) to use.

Those are the basic shortcomings of the current remote as I see them. There
are some other aesthetic things I don't like as well, such as the remote
feeling, and looking cheap, as well as that it's a little too small for my
liking (one man's gold = one man's junk...I know).

For one, this whole setup is NOT for the average joe (six-pack, to use
your examples). But like I've said, everyone has their opinions.
I've not had a problem with intuitiveness.

Striving to make something average-joe friendly should ALWAYS be the goal,
but I understand what you're saying.

Just hand the remote to someone, and see how long it is before
you get the how do I do this or that questions!

I did that. It's been almost 2 years and have had one question -
and it was related to making up a playlist of shoutcase urls.
Certainly
not something any remote would be able to handle short of my
pda.

Well...what can I say to that...people have accidentally held down the skip
track button to have it fast forward, and they would wonnder why the song
sounds funny as it clicks, and pops forward through the song. I've had
questions about how to get back to the main menu to browse again...etc.
It's easy stuff to learn/remember, but questions, and honest mistakes that
can be avoided with a few more buttons.

My 5 year old uses the remote with no issues. She doesn't even ask
how to find Cheeseburger in Paradise or Fins anymore.

A kid with a fresh mind is one thing, but a technology-fearing wife is a
whole other ball game.

I'm not saying a better, more featureful remote wouldn't be a nice
option. I'm just saying if all your going to do is use it to program
another remote and put it away, it would seem there should be a
better way to accomplish the programming of the universal remote.

To setup a universal remote properly, more often than not, you need to move
the default buttons around, by learning/relearning buttons from the original
remote. If that's required...there's no way to LEARN the FAST FORWARD
command from the current SB remoteand if you don't have an original JVC
DVD remote, you can't learn it from that either (and use the jvc codes
instead). It's kinda hard to explain, but there is method to my madness on
this one.

If your target user is someone who doesn't want to learn how to make the
system work, you're going to make changes in pursuit of an impossible
goal. Those changes will make things harder for the core audience.

Udedicated pause, fast forward, and rewind buttons will make things
harder for the core audience?!? Anything that faces end-users should be as
intuitive as possible...unless of course, you risk losing
functionality/power etc...

Better to take a page from IT Marketing's playbook: Declare pre-emptively
that your system is more friendly, easier-to-use, faster, better for the
corporate market, whatever. Suppress any evidence to the contrary, trumpet
any evidence supporting your claim, and keep at it until it becomes common
knowledge. Never mind tautologies, no one with the power to influence
common knowledge will notice them.

...anyways...I could go off on a rant here, but really, I just thought it

Sure, having a forum saves you from having to read most messages, so less
questions get answered and less people know about an issue if it was
posted OT in another thread.
That is not correct. Threads are presented from start to finish in a much
easyer to follow format with a web forum.

If you cannot see the lucidly clear advantaged of using a system like
vbulitin then you are clearly
beyond any ability to form an intelligent opinion.

Thanks for insulting me.
That was a reply to Paul not you.
Now that specialized web sites and forums have replaced mailing lists,
everybody is after the RSS feeds. I wonder if that is because push is
better than pull for a lot of applications?
I am new here and Its not my intention to war with a few die hards who
refuse to modernize. My concern is Slim Devices and making its support
more accessible for the majority.
Looking over the archive shows clear evidence that the current system is
inadequate for many people. As I said before, I suspect the majority don't
even have a voice here.

Hi Paul
I am sorry but you are wrong. This system is the kinda thing that was
running in the late 60's/70's - things have come a long way since then.
Slim
devices have an excellent product that is going to grow and support
forums
allow other uses to share their experience leaving the staff to spend
more
time developing the products we all enjoy.
I would expect 60% of new users will not participate with this current
mailing list because it is ugly, slow and not straight forward which is
why
all major websites offering support, do not use mailing list support
systems
and have easy to use/navigate web based forums.

If you cannot see the lucidly clear advantaged of using a system like
vbulitin then you are clearly beyond any ability to form an intelligent
opinion. Please research what a modern forum system like vbulitin is
capable
of. You mention it is possible to view the current posts in a forum
interface already. Well if that is your idea of a forum interface no
wonder
you are against it - the current system is dire.
I am not say this mailing list should cease, just a new system be put in
place.
I want to see slim devices grow and this support forum issue must be
dealt
with sooner or later.

Regards,
Mix

Look in the archives. Forums for a lot of people suck. With e-mail,
I can participate in many more projects and only have to
deal with one interface.
Good luck, but if you put 1% of effort into looking in the
archives (which are ina forum format already), you'll see
this gets brought up every once in a while and slim devices
is in the process of addressing it in their own FOSS way.

Please please can we have a better support forum? This type of mailing
list forum belongs in the dark ages and makes support and communication
very
slow and tiring.
Something like www.vbulletin.com is the way to go. SD needs to make
its
support as stunning as its devices.
Hope you folks agree.

It sounds like you are using an older version of Softsqueeze. With the
slimserver 6.0 beta's you must use the Softsqueeze 2 alpha's, these are
included with the slimserver.

Re: [slim] Slim Devices SB2 disappointment SB for sale.

2005-03-16 Thread Danny Rego
The problem with open source is that the contributors want to do the cool
stuff, especially when it is pretty easy.
Redesigning the basic engine is hard, slow, and has zero sizzle
Well, most people would say the same thing about an operating system
kernel. Yet Linux routinely runs for months without panicking.
Ummm...as does Windows XP (although the more geek-sided may refuse to
believe that)what's your point?

So 6.* is the first major redesign, and 7.* will likely be
a lot more like you'd want.
I'm beginning to think whether maybe it's time to think about a complete
server rewrite from scratch, probably in C rather than Perl. The menus
would be ugly and simple, but the system would actually *work* without
being restarted several times per day, without unpredictable 5 second
pauses during playback, etc, etc.
Making slim server less user-friendly/ugly would be a very dumb move.
Besides, after a bit of tweaking off the bat, slimserver runs reliably,
unless you are one that enjoys downloading the latest nightlies...then
you're asking for it.

v5.4.1 runs beautifully on my Windows XP machine...so on a decent linux
machine, I would only imagine how smooth it would run.

Ummm...as does Windows XP (although the more geek-sided may refuse to
believe that)what's your point?
Slimserver is open source, so Linux is the closer analogue. Windows XP is
1) proprietary and 2) owned by Microsoft, so it has its excuses for being
so unreliable.
The phrase unreliable is subjective in this case, so whatever. Windows XP
has been rock-solid for me in my many installations/uses. (work3 home
machines, etc) No religious argument here...just stating my case.

Making slim server less user-friendly/ugly would be a very dumb move.
Besides, after a bit of tweaking off the bat, slimserver runs reliably,
unless you are one that enjoys downloading the latest nightlies...then
you're asking for it.
Little is less user friendly than a massive package of Perl code that
crashes frequently in a mass of cryptic Perl error messages. Or just
grinds slowly to a halt for no apparent reason, gobbling all CPU time
until it has to be restarted manually.

This is on a Linux machine with ECC memory and RAID disks that otherwise
runs flawlessly for months. So it's not hardware.

v5.4.1 runs beautifully on my Windows XP machine...so on a decent linux
machine, I would only imagine how smooth it would run.
I see various nightly versions of 5.4.x, but nothing officially labeled
5.4.1. If this is supposed to be the most stable release, recommended for
those that want reliability over features, it should be labeled and
distributed as such.
I may have screwed up on the version #the version I was running was a
v5.4.x that was the official release from the slimserver site.

My whole point here is, slim server is stable, and runs fine on my WAY
over-worked (supposedly inferior) Windows XP MCE machine. The hardware I'm
using is nothing spectacular, although, it may be slightly more powerful
than the average used for slim server (2GHz celeron with 384mb ram). If
slim server is not running right for you, I would suggest it's something
with YOUR particular setup, as I have found it to be stable, and the only
thing that causes a nasty pause is generating a playlist on-the-fly of my
whole, fairly large library.

[slim] Huge artist list

2005-03-15 Thread Danny Rego

I have an adam sandler album, and on his albums
there are many artists, so a track might have this set...

Artist : Adam Sandler; David Spade

...slim server takes that, and puts ADAM SANDLER in
the artist list.DAVID SPADE in the artist list, and ALSO "ADAM SANDLER/DAVID
SPADE" Is there a way to stop it from putting in the double entry??
My artist list is absolutely freakin' HUGE because of it.

Also...in v6 of the server, is it possible to make
the ARTIST only show the artist instead of the crazy 3 data-item style it's in
now???

Anyone?

middle of winter. X10 hasn't been very reliable for me. It kept
turning my bedroom light on in the middle of the night for no reason. It
did this quite often. It also turned things off randomly. Now all
of my X10 devices are in a box in the basement. They won't wake me up

I'm not saying that you couldn't make your squeezebox do it, I just
wouldn't suggest using X10 for it. X10 should be used for non-mission

It's a radio thing, uses the same channels as car alarms. My neighbor and

Re: [slim] Harmony 688 Squeezebox

2005-03-10 Thread Danny Rego
I know how to set it up to work with the squeezebox's default remote...no
problem, but that remote lacks certain specific buttons, like stop ff, and
rew. By using a JVC DVD remote, you can get specific buttons for specific
functions, so now I'm trying to setup my remote for a Squeezebox using the
JVC DVD codes (for more functionality). That's the tricky part. (I can add
a JVC DVD player device, but I want to add a squeezebox device, and tell it
to use the alternate remote codes)

Also...can someone tell me how to go about possibly making up a new IR file
for another remote? or are we somehow limited to JVC DVD or the original
remote.

(I'm actually surprised the same crappy remote is shipping with SB2)

I just bought a Harmony 676. I had to teach the

but most did not. Try to dig through their somewhat
awkward but in the end powerful web interface until
you find the part about teaching the remote.
If you don't figure it out in 3 minutes or less,
call Harmony's technical support. They answer right

bright and friendly Canadians. I called them twice in

[slim] SB2 for Canadians

I would scoop one of these up in a second is slim

I don't think so. WMP doesn't modify the MP3 directly. To normalize
