I solved this problem a different way. I like having FLAC for it's
superior sound for streaming, but also having MP3 for syncing to
iDevices to go.

I've used this for years: https://khenriks.github.io/mp3fs/

What it does is present your FLAC files to iTunes as mp3s, and
allows your iDevices to sync them. It transcodes the FLACs to mp3 on
the fly/on request, so syncing takes a bit longer, but not
unreasonably so. Any changes made to the FLAC files are immediately
represented in the MP3s as well, including tags and cover art so
none of the hassle to having to deal with two different libraries of
the same songs. It works very elegantly and transparently for me.
It's a bit geeky yes and requires some knowhow to set up, but if
you're reasonably familiar with linux it's a no brainer.

Hi, I've been using a boom as an alarm for some time and lately it is
very flakey, not triggering the alarm a couple times a week. I am
running slimserver 7.7 from svn, and have it set to use this radio
 station from my favorites:

 live365://www.live365.com/play/wumb919fast

There is no indication of any problems in the log around the times the
alarm was set to go off and did not, though I did notice that slimserver
continues to receive title/artist info for that station all the time,
even when the boom is off - should it do that? And the title/artist
updates in the logs stop around the time the alarm should have gone off
this morning, actually about 5 minutes after it should have gone off, so
there are a few updates after it should have gone off.

I just restarted the server, it had been up 32 days.

What should I look into next?

Are there any changes in 7.8 w.r.t. alarms that might fix this?

I have a possibly-related alarm issue as well. I'm running 7.7.2 -
r33893.

I have an alarm set on a SB2 to trigger twice a day. Identical
alarms, using the same online URL/station. The 6 AM 'morning' alarm
works perfectly, every time. The 8:00 pm alarm almost never works (@
90% failure these days) and goes to the backup alarm. Stopping the
backup alarm and pressing play on the online station works every
time, so I don't believe it's the station. There's no errors in the
logs that I've been able to find. It's perplexing and annoying.

I've ruled out external bandwidth, latency and internal network
issues along with DNS in my year-plus of being periodically
frustrated with this.

I use iTunes simply because the Squeezebox Server software uses iTunes
as well to import its cataloguing...that is why

I thought there may be a way to fool iTunes into allowing the FLAC to
be included in the iTunes library (if I do not need to play them back)

This is VERY geeky, but it works really well for me and has for
years. I use it to get music into my iPhone as well as some other
iTunes-specific stuff, or when I want to quickly make a copy of some
music for someone in MP3 format without bothering to transcode it.

What it does is present your FLAC files to iTunes as MP3s, allows
iTunes to catalog them, and then when you play or import one into an
iDevice, it converts it to MP3 on the fly.

This way I don't have to bother with maintaining separate libraries
or even think about it - iTunes sees what it thinks are mp3 versions
of all my FLAC files and is perfectly happy with it. It does take
longer to sync the files since they are being converted in the
background rather than just copied, but that's a minor issue.

All my music is hosted on a Windows fileshare - I mount that to my
Linux box where I run mp3fs, then mount the mp3fs filesystem BACK to
windows and point iTunes at it.

 SYNCHRONIZATION
This is another one of the things I probably will do anyway, just want
to understand how important it is to people. The idea is to have
synchronization scenes that you can save and re-activate. This will
make synchronization setup more effort (if dig into it you'll find
there's quite a few decisions to take her) but after you've done that,
selecting synchronization may be a bit more straightforward. It's not
actually faster but it's easier to understand.

I don't sync very often, but when I do I find it tricky and
difficult to figure out between the various UIs (web, iPeng).
Probably that's because I do it so infrequently I have to relearn it
each time, but a sychronization 'scene' seems to make a lot of sense
to me. I'm pretty much always going to want to sync the same players
in the same way, so jumping through a lot of hoops to do that each
time doesn't make a lot of sense.

right? Doesn't Logitech/Harmony seem well suited to implement this?

Also, it might not be the ideal solution, but I think it might even be
possible to design the app to use the SB hardware. (I understand that
you can send IR commands from an SB3 via the headphone out.)

BTW for background I currently use a Harmony 880 and have lots of
complaints about it: the time set problem, the display and tilt sensor
both wearing out (and I've had two with the same issues), the slow
 response of some commands, etc.

With the IRBlaster plugin and an ir emitter, you can turn the stereo
on/off and adjust volume with iPeng (or really any other app). Did

Squidgy is nice, fast and responsive. Can't wait for iPeng.

I have a Controller and a couple of iPhones-my opinion after using
both is that the iPhone(touch) is a great 'personal' remote that is
likely to always be with you, but for a multi-person household
having a 'traditional' remote like the Controller laying around to
be picked up and used is extremely convenient.

I spent a large chunk of time listening yesterday while working on
some computer issues, with both my iPhone and Controller next to me.
Every time, it was more convenient to pick up the Controller to make
a quick change to what was playing - fast forward, check the song

The unofficial plugin allows you to exclude genres. I use the genre

If you do that, then remove those artists from the last.fm

The library database on Last.FM and your Squeezecenter library are
completely separate and have no relationship, so other than
submitting or not submitting there is no way to manipulate your

yesterday i installed firmware 2 on my ipod touch, and next thing was to

and today i will put my squeezebox on ebay. i am really sorry to say
that, because i love my squeezebox and i liked very much what i could
do with it. but, apple once again did everything right (a little late,
maybe). I have an ipod and airport express anyway, but now i can use my
ipod touch to remote control itunes on my old serving iMac g3, fast,
easy, no setup hassle, no server whatever IP and so on. It just works,
like listening music on the ipod itself. incredible.

I have an iPhone 3G too (replacing my year-old original). I haven't
even considered installing the 'Remote' app. The only thing I would
ever use iTunes for is syncing the iPhone, and even that is
problematic because of the lack of FLAC support. itunes is a
bloated piece of garbage. I use and love Apple and Apple products,
but man what a misfire iTunes is.

Have fun though!

Also, I would love to be able to stream to an iPhone. Is that possible
  and if so, how?

ANy assisatance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

General steps.. assuming you have a cable/adsl connection (and winders)
and that your SC machine is connected to the cable/dsl box WITHOUT a
 router/wireless access point in-between...

Most cable setups give you a static (unchanging IP address) and many
phone companies DSL automatically give you a static address when you
 have higher speeds.

 1. at the home computer, open a browser and go to www.whatismyip.com.
Write down this external IP address.

 2. open a command window and type
 ipconfig enter
write down the IP address and the default gateway (assuming you are on
 the machine running SC.)

 3. in a browser window key http://default gateway address enter
 Mine is
 http://192.168.0.111
This should display the configuration screen for your cable/dsl modem.
This is the tricky part because there are so many different models.
I've used Netopia and Westell (ATT) modems so I'll give you them as an
 example..

 4. You will be looking for NAT setup. In my modems you go to expert
 mode/configure/NAT.

BACKGROUND: what we want to do is to tell the modem that when it sees
business from the outside world (internet/work) on a particular PORT
number, forward that traffic to the SC machine. There are two ports
involved, TCP 9000 and TCP 3483. Default behavior for these modems is
to reject ANY inbound traffic from the internet that hasn't been
requested by a computer on the inside. This is a good thing,
preventing the outside world from seeing the network in your home.

In my netopia, I have to define a service (as port forwarding, range
of ports) from ports 9000 through 9000 to base port 9000. Then I do the
 same for port 3483.

When I tell the modem to enable these services, it asks which
computer address I want them to be sent to. Here you enter the IP
address from the ipconfig screen (the address of the machine that is
running SC.) Some modems may let you fill this info into a form rather
than having a two-step process and some modems will show the names of
the machines in addition to IP addresses when you select the target.

 5. go here http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php and download
lame. This is the code that will compress your music on-the-fly as you
play it remotely. Put LAME.EXE in
 C:\program files\squeezecenter\server\bin\mswin32-x86-multi-thread
You don't need the .DLL version. You'll know it's the right place
because it will have alac.exe, flac.exe, sox.exe, etc.

 6. go to the outside world and open a browser, keying the address:

 http://whatismyip:9000
where whatismyip is the external IP address from the earlier step.

The http:// is very important if you are using a newer version of
Internet Explorer because they don't make a guess about which protocol
to use on non-standard ports (like 9000)

If everything has been done right, you should see SC. If you don't,
it's possible that port 9000 is blocked by your IT people. Tough luck.
Try again from a public WiFi to see if you've got the configuration
 right.

 7. go to extras and install SoftSqueeze.

 8. things may be ok at this point, but I would rename the SoftSqueeze
player and change it's Audio settings to about 128K. The Lame quality
setting you use depends on how fast your SC machine is ...

 9. advanced diddling: run SoftSqueeze. open SC, select the SoftSqueeze
player and go to HELP/Server and Network Health. Pick a speed and the
results will be shown on the SoftSqueeze display and in SC. This is
testing the outbound speed of your home broadband connection.

If you have a very fast connection at home, you can push this up but
REMEMBER... you'll also be sucking bandwidth from your employer's
inbound connection so it might be better to be reasonable (and not
 attract attention...)

Nice writeup. This needs to go on the wiki.

It cant be right, that i buy legal music and cant play it.
 What to do?

It's a Digital Rights Management (DRM) restriction placed on the
music you purchased by Apple/iTunes. It won't play through the SB.
You should only purchase DRM-free music in general - places like
Amazon's music store and Emusic don't burden their product with DRM
and are thus universally playable.

This isn't a SlimDevices issue, really. Apple won't license their
FairPlay DRM technology to anyone, so SlimDevices is powerless to
support music from iTunes. I don't know anything about Cdon.com, it
may or may not be the same sort of situation.

Perhaps I will try FLAC, I've heard good things about it, its just going
to be irritating having to rip all my CD's again. Is there a specific
 program that works for this?

You don't have to re-rip. You can convert directly from the wav
files using DBPowerAmp or a variety of other tools. FLAC is
lossless, as is wav, so there is no real benefit to re-ripping from
the source disk.

Also, my songs are still played out of order even when I browse my
music by album. Maybe switching over to FLAC will solve some of these
problems. Some input before I get going on that this morning would be
 appreciated :D

Since wav doesn't support tagging, there is no way for it to know
outside of file names what order the songs are supposed to be in.
flac DOES support tagging, including the 'track #' tag, so
SlimServer can get it right.

[slim] hacking the Rio Receiver to run Slimserver

From the main page:

SLIMP3's hardware capabilities are similar to those of the Rio
Receiver, but its abilities are greater because of the power offered
by the slimserver software. slimserver continues to develop and add
new features, but it still supports the SLIMP3 hardware with the
same simple protocol. What would happen if the Rio Receiver could
speak that protocol too? It would be able to do all the wonderful

The Soundbridge takes CD-type input (44.1kHz sampling) and resamples to
48kHz. That degrades quality. (You can see the effect visually by
resizing an image to a non-multiple. The real world doesn't work like
TV where CSI can enlarge a photo to infinite resolution... what happens
when you resize an image is straight lines become jaggedy, curves become
a mess, etc... The same happens with audio.)

It is slightly cheaper for them to do that... but saving a buck for a
serious degradation of sound quality is very bad.

As for just playing mp3 streams... the SB3 plays mp3, ogg, wma, flac
and wav by itself. The Soundbridge docs look like it only supports
 FLAC when used with Slimserver

And that FLAC support is through transcoding to mp3, right? It
doesn't support FLAC in hardware.

I'm very interested in this topic because SB v. Roku has come up
twice this week at work. I've already lost one to a Roku and I'd
like not to lose another. I take it personally.

The one I lost was due to the couple involved having two separate
music collections on 2 different laptops, no constantly-on machines
and no desire to mix collections. The Roku is able to 'see' their
iTunes libraries and switch between them, a much more involved
proposition on the SB.

I use MediaMonkey to transcode to mp3 to my iPhone and formerly to

Or a Dell computer? Dells (and probably other brands) come with a
sampler of music preloaded on the hard drive. Itunes won't find it
because it can't play it. I'd bet money this is the case. Look in
the 'My Music' folder on your hard drive and those songs are
probably there. Post up the names and I'm sure we can confirm where
they came from.

 Hi,

As you probably all know, the new iPod Touch has Wi-Fi and the Safari
 browser built in.

I'm thinking one could use it to run SS in the home?

Maybe with a groovy new skin?

I'm going to keep posting this on every iPod Touch/iPhone thread. :-)

The iPhone / iPodTouch works great with the Nokia770 skin already.
Nothing new or iPhone specific necessary.

Quoting adamslim ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):

480x320? rubbish. i find the nokia 770 fine for both SS and browsing,
but my pocket pc phone, at 3.5 640x480, was too small. i'm sure it's
got a great interface, but that resolution is a killer for me.

Have you tried the multi-touch interface? Between that and the
landscape mode, the iPhone (same dealio as the ipod touch) has the
best browsing interface on a smart device I've used. And I own/use
a Nokia 770, and have had many 'smartphones.' Every phone I've owned
in the past 7+ years has had web browsing capability, the best so
far being the Motorola Q I just dumped, but the mobile Safari
browser blows it away. It's the first mobile browser I've had
that's truly USABLE. Usable in that I'll actually pull it up and do
work on it rather than get frustrated and wait until I get to a
'real' computer as was formally the case.

For cred, I'm not an Apple fanboy; they only Apple devices I own are
the iPhone and an 80 gb iPod, but spend some time with their
multi-touch devices and you'll become a fan fast.

And to respond to an earlier post, while it's not the same as having
a native client for these things, having the Safari browser gives
you an email client, IM applications and more. There are also
third-party native clients for the iPhone coming out by the day, and
the iPod Touch uses the same OS as the iPhone; I've heard it's the
same binaries.

I have seen reports that the new iPod touch has been seen to have
Bluetooth icons, but I have not heard that verified. I frankly
don't know why it would, since even the Bluetooth on the iPhone
won't do music, only Bluetooth telephone headsets.

Something must have screwed up your file system badly.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't slimserver though.
Do you remember what you did on your computer just before the SB3
stopped playing (new/updated programs, virus scan, files copied/moved,
 etc).
Are the affected files on a local hd, external hd or NAS?
 What filesystem?
 What is your operating system?
Does the problem persist after a reboot?

There is a new virus in the wild that deletes mp3 files. So far it
has only been seen affecting mp3 players, ie you plug your buddys
infected iPod into your machine and your mp3s get deleted.

I'm guessing, though, that you have a filesystem problem.

Just a brief note to welcome Felix Mueller, Michael Herger and Ben
Klaas to the Logitech/Slim Devices engineering teams.

All three of these guys are long-time, active members of our
community who have already made terrific contributions.

Felix is known for a huge number of hardware and software projects,
including IR blasting and my favorite, TinyLittlePacMan. Felix is
already hit the ground running on firmware development, from
 Switzerland.

Michael is the creator of SlimCD and SlimNAS, MusicINfoSCR and more.
He's working on a variety of SlimServer features, including web UI
 and localization, also from Switzerland.

Ben Klaas, famed author of the Nokia770 skin, is working on some Jive-
related stuff, including localization and some SlimServer integration
tasks, from his home in Minnesota.

We're really excited to have them able to work full time on the stuff
that they used to do for fun and fame.

I think this is a HUGELY positive move. Contrast this news to the
negativity surrounding the Logitech aquisition; we haven't seen
anything bad come from Logitech, and are starting to see tremendous
positives like this.

Congrats guys! I've used software and tools from all 3 of you, and
look forward to your continuing and expanded contributions!

iPhone with Nokia 770 skin == awesomeness

Motorola Q (my previous phone) sucked as a SS remote. I tried

nothing was satisfactory. Nice little phone otherwise though.

I just got to see mvalera's iPhone yesterday with Nokia770, and some of
the Nokia770 CSS somewhat ruined the user experience (although I could
see the awesomeness at the end of the tunnel). I'm curious if you're
seeing those issues-- specifically the footer bar not being fixed at

Yes, I have seen that, but didn't think it's a big deal. It doesn't

tell you under what conditions the bug appears. I'll try to pay

Haven't seen that one that I recall.

So, if the iPhone + Nokia770 skin combo is working perfectly for you,

Doesn't have to be perfect to be awesome, Ben.

Running 6.5.2 - 11854 right now, from the rpm named

 Any help is much appreciated

Do you use Last.fm to report the music you listen to on your
Slimserver? If so, Last.fm provides an widget that you can embed
into Wordpress.

It's not as 'direct' as a slimserver plugin but it fulfills the same
purpose.

I just opened my 770 this afternoon and have been playing with it for a

nokia style wall wart (kinda on the small side) but at least it angles
off at 90 degrees so that it does not take more than 1 space on a power
 outlet.

My initial charge took a little over 2 hours.

I have to say - that from my initial impressions I am quite amazed at
 the quality of the device.

Same here - came today, great little device.

Kudos to bklass on such a wonderful skin! Followed his directions
for javascript on, full screen and hide menu bar - this is the
PERFECT SB remote for me. My intention was to use it in the
backyard, by the pool, over wifi - an area the standard (excellent)
sb remote is impotent to cover. Great little box, great skin.

Correct. You cannot play music that has been purchased from the
iTunes music store through a Squeezebox. Or any other network music
player for that matter, other than an Airport. Apple won't allow
this to happen, it is not a Squeezebox issue.

You CAN, on the other hand, very easily strip the DRM Apple adds to
the files and end up with unencrypted m4a files that will play
beautfully through the Squeezebox. You bought 'em, figure out a way
to use them in the way you want.

want to use iTunes, MusicIP or your own music path. If it's the latter,
let the user visually choose the path as it's seen by the server (no
mounted drive letters and stuff) etc.?

A wizard would help, since it can make the user do the choices in the
 correct order.

But lets assume that we are talking about someone who doesn't know how
SlimServer works. This user has probably not realized that he needs a
tagging/ripping program, so he has no idea what to choose in these
options. If he has iTunes installed he might choose it, if not he
probably choose the music path option since he probably doesn't know
 what MusicIP is.

Do we really think that a potential Squeezebox purchasers first
experience with needing to deal with digital music files is buying a
Squeezebox? I doubt it.

I'd postulate that people that are buying Squeezeboxes today have
already learned to deal with these issues because they have iPods or
other digital music players and through these players are already
well aware of tagging/ripping issues. iTunes has already handled
those issues for them - if music isn't tagged right they can't find
in on their iPod and they fix it.

Sure it can be done BETTER than by using iTunes or whatever sw came
with their non-Apple devices, but they are certainly already
familiar with the problem.

If SD/Logitech is really interested in fast start for new users to
the SB, then easy fast integration with iTunes is low hanging fruit.
iTunes's already installed, it already has music in it and users are
familiar with it.

As a more experienced user, I'd need the option to follow another
path, but having that fast start for the vast majority of users is
important.

With the Rockbox firmware, you can play flac files on your iPod.

Also, tools such as Anapod and MediaMonkey will transcode your flacs
on the fly to mp3 to put onto your iPod, so you don't have to have a
set of mp3 files just to support your ipod. I've used both and they

Seconded, I've used eMusic for a long time, have their top tier of
