already did that :/

On a clean install you dont have to worry to much about settings and
plugins you change the stuff neded to make your things work and mjerger
knows whats usually are the defaults for the rest .

However for sucessfull faulttracing one change one thing at the time if
possible and observw the effects .

Xilinx reset is a good thing sometimes .

Also is there wifi involved ?

Wonder if there more than one issue ( since your reinstall) ?

Have you done a xilnk reset on your Squeezboxes ? Or maybe a factory
reset .

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Special_IR_Keys_on_Reboot_for_Factory_Reset_and_Last_FW

No sound is the system otherwise working can LMS se the players can
the players contact LMS on the server .

What kind of files are trying to play ? Try an MP3 and a flac file ,
with no strange settings in file types or fiddling with convert conf
files (do not use the inguz plugin for example )

Do,your reinstall of LMS manage to do a complete scan of the library ?
Did you do a clean reinstall ? Removing al cached DB files and settings
?

All these differences go away once you do proper tests like ABX .
Any reasonably good transport is completely transparent to a human

Yes the most likly cause for these differences is sigthed listening
test with some learned audiophile bias .

With the small differences in question 100dB down in the noise or
nonexisting .
All sigthed testing are just anectotes and contain no real information

If one subjectively experience very large differences something is ver
wrong either one is heavily biased or the equipment is broken.

What kind of dac are we talking about ? There are a lot of high end

really has nothing to do with it .

If th e equipment in question is audiophile enough it can be broken by
design :/ nos dac anyone ?

Why can't the servers ethernet port be on the same network ? Having a an
192.168.0.x adress ? That may just solve your issue without the need for
multiple servers . You may have to bridge the interfaces in some way on
the server .

Or I see that the server is also wireless a good idea woul be to wire
the server to the router that would cut the wifi load in half for all
players ( and run wire from the router to the transporter )

The best thing is to actually have a line level or preferably a digital
filter in the amp or ht reciever or ht processor . and accept that the
squeezebox is source component .

If this filte is good (read steep enough ) conected with some DRC very
good results can be obtained .

I do unload the deepest bass from my main speakers but i do xover as low
as possible , given the speakers i use , some experimentation required
.

However such an active speakers as the AVi ADM9 has its own built in sub
xover for a dedicated optional sub , maybe there are more active speakrs
with this feature if one wants a self contained system with just
squeezebox and speakers and sub .

If you have passive speakers just get an amp with sub xover .

Re: [slim] what to use to run squeeze

2015-02-05 Thread Mnyb

My pow .

Use something x86 based ,use internal SATA drive one separate drive for
the OS ( not just its own partition ) other drives for the music . The
OS drive can be an SSD .

Use vortexbox or some linux OS on your own , preferably annOS wihtout
Desktop ( GUI ) a server OS . You will admin it trough web interfaces
and ssh anyway .

My HP Microserver is fast enough , today I would have opted for more RAM
as the later LMS 7.9 can take advantage of that .

So basically in my pow a dual core atom or better is sufficient as a
server .

And the good old x86 architecture has good FPU and supports most of the
helper ap's that LMS uses ,this will mean that you're guaranteed to be
able to use LMS fulll potential .

Maybe time has moved one and everything is aviable for the arm
architecture ?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 2015 - Is the Squeezebox Universe Expanding of Shrinking?

2015-02-01 Thread Mnyb

The LMS compatibility is not even mentioned on brystons website ? it's
ofcourse very easy to add just install squeezelite . Is the whole LMS
server also preinstalled ? it can use external storage and play files
from usb sticks and hard drives .
The manual mentiosn MPD as the player .

The price is very telling of the cost of high end, a nice box and
overdesigned powersupply is probably the majority of the price . Kind of
interesting if you do box count in a typical high end rig every function
in a separate box :D
And the risk premuim , what if the audio rags hype another brand next
year ? You must have really high margins to stay profitable in high end
audio over an extended period .

Thats why it's a bit stupid that they don’t put a DAC in it ,they got
the box and the power supply adding another board wont make much more
expensive, but of course they want to sell another box to you...

I do already have LMS running on Win 8. Your suggestion about upnp
sounds interesting. Do you have more info or can you point me somewhere?

Movies your probably get a 20-30 second delay/lag (or more ) you cant
fix ? do a forum search , you find plenty of people have tried before ,
I don’t know if anyone have made any progress lately . But I never seen
any conclusion to these treads .
Its a very popular question that pops up now and then .

There is a youtube plugin ,but its playing the audio , assume you want
to see the movie too at the same time ?

Re: [slim] ReadyNAS and FLAC 96kHz

2015-01-27 Thread Mnyb

Hopefully someone know about the 104 readynas and can assist . What is
the LMS version ?

Even if you can get the transcoding to work it still not a good idea to
have NAS transcode all,the time .
(Your squeezeboxes supports 24/48 btw and that the rate used by the
transcoding in your case)
And the network load will be higher with higher samplerate files .

Pity you did not have the original CD rips around if down convert back
you would not end up with the original rip . Both the upsampling and
downsampling alters the data slightly , just so you know . You no longer
have bitperfect copies of your songs .

Backup are esential its a lot of work to rerip ones discs and redownload
all purchases :/

If your going to rerip the CD's suggest using dBpoweramp or EAC

There are fellows that upsample cd material , but they have players
supporting 24/96 or more and usually some very special DAC connected
that migth need it. But they never touch the original files .
You can make special rules that makes LMS upsample on the fly .
IMO this does not really makes sense either for a lot of reasons , but
that's another topic

Re: [slim] ReadyNAS and FLAC 96kHz

2015-01-27 Thread Mnyb

What kind of ready NAS ? not the old DUO i hope (because it cant
transcode not enough cpu/memory ) ?

What kind of squeezebox do you have it's only the Touch or transporter
that supports 24/96 natively . If you have one of those and it still
tries to resample you got some settings wrong .

Dou you have the original WMA lossles files as backup what’s the
origianl sample rate on those if 16/44.1 just make yourself new flac
files with the original resolution ,there is simply no point in
up-sampling them , just a vaste of storage and cpu cyckles ?

Re: [slim] Using Squeezebox as wireless DAC

2015-01-26 Thread Mnyb

Use LMS logitech media server . And there is a WAV-in plugin for sources
other than files that LMS has scanned .
And with the latest LMS 7.9 you can use to browse folder without scan
and play the files .

But forget about using for movies or video games , the buffering
involved means just to much lag . LMS + squeezeboxes is a music system
that's basically works the other way around from what you thinking about
. You sitting with your player using its UI or some app pulling music
from a computer/NAS that's not in the room with you . Not sitting in
from of a computer pushing out music to the players .

However there are some solutions for using foobar2000 and also
MediaMonkey as players .

You can take the complete log files and zip them and post here ( or add
the txt files if they are small enough ) , just not copy excerpts from
the web UI .

Then you can post the full log .

If the scan does not finish there is no hope of any decent functionality
. So the system needs to have complete scan that's completed trouble
free .

Did you try with as few plugins as possible ? With or without the iTunes
integration on ? You can piont LMS directly to the files in its basic
settings and not use the iTunes integration .

Another tip seems to be to delete all .dB and .wal files in the cache
directory and restart LMS and let it finish its scan .

Mavericks do a search on that , and don't know if the fixes made to get
LMS to work with Mavericks is done to anything less than 7.8.1 or is it
even 7.9 I haven't followed which server version that fits which OSX
version .

similar idea ( with some obvius differences maybe a case study for you )

I also gets a newsletter called 14 tracks , thier blunder is not to
offer Flac files . Some 14 track offerings are really interesting but
only aviable as MP3 .

I would not pay for lossy compressed files ( broken product IMO ).

Yes to many subscriptions then you get flooded with music options again
.

Looking forward to see what irregular offerings this initiative will
provide .

Any idea on how often a boxsett will apear , but on the other hand a
user don't have to buy all the sets .
Preview samples would be an idea (30 s of each song or like boomkat does
it an anyiyng beep every 30 seconds , but the full song as preview )

Why I quit bw music club , never had the time to digest all the music
they provided me with , even if never downloaded most of thier classical
offerings , but still to many albums I rarely listen to .

Re: [slim] Album Songs Out Of Order

2015-01-17 Thread Mnyb

When browsing folders you are not using the embedded tags in the files
like track number . But they are sorted like the OS sorts the folders
and files .
So folder browse find the files alphabetically so make the filenames so
the files sort as you want .

For,example,name the tracks like 01-track or 001-track .

That's the only thing I can think of except shuffle mode .

And btw are the file tags in good order it migth confuse LMS if they are
not , the tags are used for presentation in the UI even they are not
used for sorting when folder browsing so if the track contains a faulty
track number tag .

and on this forum there is a what are you listening to rigth now tread
that is great . In general the music sub forum here is filled with great

And I use spotify and play some distant but very musical friends
playlists , also great .

I also use the smartmix plugin to LMS kick of something I like and watch
it pick similar stuff from spotify .

Then I have the what was that tune plugin enabled so I can always go
back and see what i listened to from any source . You know the feeling I
heard a great song 15 minutes ago what was that .

You can always subscribe to newsletters from chosen record labels .

Boxsett , is this specialised in indie seems like anything that's not
pop or rock is indie or alternative ?

I will give it a try, is it up and running is there any set to be had
yet ?

I can't see any example boxsett yet ? Having preview directly on the

Re: [slim] OraStream?

2015-01-13 Thread Mnyb

Piont seem to be to traffic shape when needed , you get the full Rez
when your bandwith is up to it .

But .

Only a very limited amount of tracks at the moment .
So it can't be a drop in replacement for any current streaming service
due to the lack of program material .
If there is nothing to listen to the quality does not matter .

I can think of it as a complementary service to the ones I already have
and to my own collection , but then the price must be lowered.

There no piont going beyond 16/44.1 for streaming . You can make
extremely weak arguments for 24/96 as a consumer format for disc or
download . 24/192 is just silly .

And .

There electronics track offerings are at 16/44.1 and the classical
tracks are for the most 24/96 .

Do you need EDO : probably not as most tracks are 24/96 or less even if
an occasional 24/192 would show up LMS a would handle it trough
downsampling ( yes I think direct mysqueezebox.com support is very
unlikely ) .
So basically the need of EDO a is determined by the need for USB audio
and/or don't having a server capable of downsampling 192k or using DoP
.
And 96k demands external DAC as EDO won't make the squeezebox support
24/192 internally .

But hey . They are also a store so if some of thier limited music
offering suits you just buy the albums :)
So my questions would be is there anyway to get to thier online store
without forking out for a monthly subscription or is this subscription
only .

prices are much about marketting and psychology going over even number
as 10 or 100 looks expensive .

People doing any bussines have to make some educated guess about what
people are willing to pay on that market . US is a very large very
competitive market as usual .

But I do like companies like bandcamp and boomkat that simply have the

2014-12-05 Thread Mnyb

I agree wth the statements re recording quality .

So wake me up when we routinely gets music released that actualy
has intrisinic sq beyound the humble cd :)

When the world has changed and all music has the same sq as those very
few audiophile recordings that achive this AND with real music with
artist any one heard of ( dont get me started on the uselessnes of
audiophile music labels ).

Then we may discuss less data intense means of broadcast .

Wonder if not moores law have made all this obselete by then ?

Dont get me wrong i'm a fan of Meridian equipment and the fact that most
of what they do is science based ( not all things ) which is rare in
high end hifi .

And i also like some AiX hirez recordings they sometimes contains real
music not only good sound .

Btw wonder what mr waldrep ( aix itrax ) has to say he have posted on

[slim] New router not a day to late !

2014-12-01 Thread Mnyb

I've changed router wow , these buggers have developed some in the last
6 years :) my old trusty wrt54gl (linksys) was behaving more and more
erratic after 6 years deployment . I do think they overheat .

Replaced it with an wrt1900ac ( picking between it and some asus models
).

Maybe I could have gotten myself something even better and or cheaper
with more consideration , but i picked it up on the way from work it was
probably the best they had in the store .

Imho what i've also learned over the years is that the worst possible
router usually is whatever you get for free from any isp

2014-11-30 Thread Mnyb

 Greetings Zombie Squeezebox Owners,

If you navigate to Radio-Staff Picks-Ben's PicksPodcasts, the list
has been refreshed with some new picks. Two trivia/quiz show style, one
sports commentary, and one music-based podcast.

Ask Me Another (NPR) blends brainteasers and local pub trivia night with
comedy and music into a rambunctious hour-long show. Play along as Host
Ophira Eisenberg invites in-studio guests and listeners alike to stretch
their noggins, tickle their funny bones, and enjoy witty banter and
guitar riffs from house musician Jonathan Coulton. What you'll hear
resembles the casual intimacy of game night at a friend's house: one
where scores are forgotten in favor of hilarious gaffes. More here:

Good Job, Brain! is a free weekly clean audio podcast that's part quiz
show part offbeat news. It's the ultimate nutrition for your brain. So
eat up! Good Job, Brain! was started through a kickstarter project and
is independently produced. More here: http://www.goodjobbrain.com/

Hang Up And Listen from Slate is weekly, heady and humorous sports
commentary. Worth a listen if you enjoy sports but not ESPN. More here
 http://www.slate.com/articles/podcasts/hang_up_and_listen.html

Music for Programming is a periodically updated podcast of ambient music
specifically designed for use when focusing on coding (or other
 focus-necessary activities). It's reminiscent of e.g. Soma's Groove
Salad, but it's definitely its own animal. More here:

Finallly, Alec Baldwin got into one too many absurd verbally abusive
scenes with the public and decided to remove himself from the scrutiny
of the masses, and as a result his consistently excellent Here's the
Thing podcast is no more. So, I removed that one from the list.

Several years post-squeezebox death, my 10 squeezeboxes are all
 chugging along nicely, thankyouverymuch.

 Never give up! Never surrender!

Thanks ! Wil have a listen :) . Long live squeezebox ( hell hydra )

Speaking of the whole Idea with staff picks it is quite typical of
the squeezebox universe ideas are rarely realised to thier full
potential.

What squeezenetwork would have benefitted from in the past was
something like curated content picking that's actively maintained and
maybe even some weekly shows .

Idea ? Let some music interested forum members pick thier stuff .

However you can see in the server log what it tries to do .
You should have error messages there already .
You can go to the advanced settings for logging and increase the log
level for transcoding related stuff press apply for them to take and
also tick the little box that makes the log settings stick after next
reboot .

Then the log should tell us what LMS tries to do .

One idea is to buy better active speaker to the pc .

They dont have to be pc speakers small active nearfield monitor will
do fine like for example ADAM A3x that I uses with my PC . And also use
the small vedges for desktop placement adam sells to thier speakers (to
tilt it upwars a bit . In such close quartars i also adjusted the treble
down a bit .
I'm quite happy with that as a PC setup .

If you dont want to have the pc running just some active speakers and
one of the RasPi based players or similar RasPi picoreplayer and
hiffiberry dac seems popular on the forum , but there are more solutions
.

On the UberStations we have a lot of stations having

stations .

Calm Radio does not work particulary well .

Glitchy to start playback it works best with my boom , you have to try
several times before you get audio not just the picture and time
progressing .

None of the Atmospheres work at all (the nature sounds ).

And good luck with your new venture :)

Re: [slim] What is the best way to add a room to your server these days?

2014-11-23 Thread Mnyb

With an old laptop you have several possibilities to consider.

Keep XP or install some linux OS on it .

The players to use are SqueezePlay or Squeezelite .

Is the internal soundcard good enough or should some USB DAC be used ,
but this migth not be an issue unless you get really good speakers and
the internal sound is really bad .

You may have to investigate how to set up the PC for best sound , is
there a SqueezePlay version with asio or wasapi support ?
But don't get to bogged down in esoteric discussions regarding this .

WOL over wifi is a very rare functionality that must have hardware
support , it's safe to assume that most laptops does not have that . And
the WOL function in LMS works the other way around the players can wake
the server .
You have to set it up to avoid the deepest sleep modes that disables the
wifi interface , but on the other hand kick in a blank screen as fast
possible and hard drive spin down migth save you enough power .

That was the point really , they apparently do not have the same raw
material or process it differently ,now why is that ? or rather do any
service really know or or actually actively partake in the process of
aquaring material and what is the post process if any ?

Or do they just provide an upload service for the labels and leave it at
that ?

And then what anything else done ?

For the usual music service it's not to bad leave it to the labels and
artist to present their material as they see fit, it's their call .

But if you call anything a Hifi service you committed yourself to some
higher standards the lossles vs lossy format thing is a marketting ruse
. The real deal would be if they actually acquired the best possible
master or version of a given work or had several version to user to
chose from . Unaltered by any post compression or volume change .

For example if you sell a hifi service you must be well aware of the
loudness war and that many labels do mincemeat of their old classics to
modernise them and simply ask for the old CD master or anything else
done prior to this craze .
That would be part of the curating process .

The streaming services are not exactly giving us the details on how its
really done . which is a shame more quality controll and more
transparency I would actually buy into such a service :)

I would like confirmation that what I am trying to achieve is possible

 Thanks for you guidance...

If you are using the oficial Spotify app , you can't sync the SB Classic

I'm trying to figure this out now...

Is your ickstream system a replacement for Mysqueezebox.com? So, is it a
kind of online server that we'd have to subscribe to if we want to use
 the new plugins?
Or are the Plugins real LMS plugins that run locally on our LMS Server
devices (like the Triode Spotify Plugin)?

 The reason I ask:

Mysqueezebox.com lives at the mercy of Logitech. Ickstream would live at
the mercy of whoever is behind it, but LMS Plugins live forever, no
matter what. They might not get updated anymore and eventually might
lose compatibility with the corresponding service, but they would not
rely on a (cost intensive) server infrastructure like Mysqueezebox and a
Dev could always pick up the code and continue to work on them.

So, where are you heading with this? The information found in your blog
and occasional posts leaves me with more questions than answers... ;)

It can get a little bit more complicated . some service would not really
like to have thier secret handshake running on open source software at
the end users machines . So the secret part must in some cases run
elsewhere .

They actually want to deal with a commercial entity if its not their
very own implementation .

They are happy to handle help and APi keys to Sonos or Logitech or
whatnot but not John Doe the hobby developer .

duplicate it every time, when switching to disabled. I had to
troubleshoot it as much as possible because there's no way I'm going to
catch a blast of that with the volume tuned up. I was lucky mine was way
down low when it first happened. It could also be a combination of other
settings/gear that set it in motion. Who knows.

I do know the seek is a tad faster (or perhaps just more responsive)
with Foobar than with the SBT's controls. Maybe it has to do with losing
its lock on the stream. Perhaps, just for fun, I'll see if I can delay
the seek time and then see if it will get a better lock.

Anyway, I'm confident this will not happen with that setting to Enabled.
If I thought for a second it would, I would immediately ditch FooSQ.

Disabling flac is generarly not a good idea :) so good catch to enable
it again thats the default setting for most LMS users/installations .

Disabling it creates transcoding load on the server and almost doubles
the network traffic to the player

Re: [slim] Adding Duet to New Logitech Home Hub

2014-10-22 Thread Mnyb

Different kind of products different departements I use a similar
product called iRule with iTach modules ( you don't just have one kind
of base unit you can have as many as you like ) , there there some work
against building natively squeezeserver controll by some entusiast (
doubt that it get far beyond basic control ) it can do network controls
to ( never tried ). It can BTW send squeezebox ir codes so i can make My
Touch skip tracks play and pause etc . Then I use iPeng for finer
controll of my 4 squeezeboxes . IRule have serial control modules so I
use the rs232 connector on my Ht processor and by that I'm able to
control my complete meridian HT.

Controlling a squeezebox is not just a device , what you really do with
any controll in the squeezebox universe is talking to LMS server who in
turn controll all the players and this goes far beyond pause and play
etc . What you can do on the controller for example save and rearange
create and edit playlists controll some server settings view artwork etc
use online apps from internet and this on multiple players and also
change which player to control. it's much more than sending some remote
codes to a device even if they are trough wifi Or Bluetooth .

What they probably mean by *wifi* are network codes , some devices
accept commands trough your home network the device is connected to the
network and it can take some simple commands aimed at its IP adress ,
but it's practically the same as ir that's the kind of codes you can
send , it's still remote controll emulation .

Recreating a squeezebox UI on a harmony remote would take some work.
Don't underestimate your humble duet controller it is actually a
complete Linux mini computer running SqueezePlay talking to your server
and the internet ( mysqueezebox.com ).

So,I guess making this kind of work towards a niche product don't make
sense to the harmony developers their app would probably get very
complex fast with just as much code for the LMS server as just about the
rest of the thing ? All to make 0,5% of thier custommers happy ?

Some home automation systems do some simple squeezebox control but
that's more money and probably some additional devices to do it .

So I would actually not expect this ( or any other programable remote )
to work beyond sending actuall squeezebox ir commands to squeezeboxes
that have ir , ( FYI the squeezebox actually relays those ir codes to
the server , who in turn control the player .. )

It so happens that the same company that makes harmony remotes also made
squeezeboxes 3 years ago , I would not expect much from that .

Or are we expecting logitech to integrate thier products in a way that
Apple does it ? ( that would be the day )

Was not harmony a separate company bought by logitech ? Same as UE and
Slimdevices ( squeezebox ) .
I think they actually managed to blow all 3 companies if you ask thier
custommer base .

Good luck with the remote I was looking at this and similar products
before settling with iRule/iTach the deciding factor was that the iRule
system has more base units IR Ethernet serial wifi and relays .

Well the receiver part of duet has no infra red so a remove controll

to support TLS 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2, and any use of SSLv2 or SSLv3 should be
removed. My guess is that there is a config option that needs to be
 changed in something like:
 IO::Socket::SSL
 http://search.cpan.org/~sullr/IO-Socket-SSL-2.000/lib/IO/Socket/SSL.pod#Common_Problems_with_SSL

-*SSL_version*
Sets the version of the SSL protocol used to transmit data. 'SSLv23'
uses a handshake compatible with SSL2.0, SSL3.0 and TLS1.x, while
 'SSLv2', 'SSLv3', 'TLSv1', 'TLSv1_1' or 'TLSv1_2' restrict handshake and
protocol to the specified version. All values are case-insensitive.
Instead of 'TLSv1_1' and 'TLSv1_2' one can also use 'TLSv11' and
'TLSv12'. Support for 'TLSv1_1' and 'TLSv1_2' requires recent versions
 of Net::SSLeay and openssl.

Independent from the handshake format you can limit to set of accepted
SSL versions by adding !version separated by ':'.

The default SSL_version is 'SSLv23:!SSLv3:!SSLv2' which means, that the
handshake format is compatible to SSL2.0 and higher, but that the
successful handshake is limited to TLS1.0 and higher, that is no SSL2.0
or SSL3.0 because both of these versions have serious security issues
and should not be used anymore. You can also use !TLSv1_1 and !TLSv1_2
to disable TLS versions 1.1 and 1.2 while still allowing TLS version
 1.0.

Setting the version instead to 'TLSv1' might break interaction with
older clients, which need and SSL2.0 compatible handshake. On the other
side some clients just close the connection when they receive a TLS
version 1.1 request. In this case setting the version to
 'SSLv23:!SSLv2:!SSLv3:!TLSv1_1:!TLSv1_2' might help.
 -

 or Net::SSLeay
 http://search.cpan.org/~mikem/Net-SSLeay-1.66/lib/Net/SSLeay.pod
Replace any SSLv2 or SSLv3 functions with TLSv1 equivalents.
Take note of security recommendations here:

 -Ross

A wild guess is that the snag will be in the players themself like 3
years ago .
Some services demands that the security is taking place inside the

Re: [slim] OT: looking for iPhone music player with some LMS-like features

2014-10-13 Thread Mnyb

Great topic ! Does anyone of those players override the original music
player in iOS7 especially in a car .

I suffer the ( insufferable ) well known iOS7 bug that makes the music
player automagically start playing music if my car media player is on ,
no and the music player does not even have to be on. And it can
start doing this in the middle of phone conversations to... And it
always picks the first album/playlist in the cue

Well I try in the weekend , if any of these are good I simply erase all
music in the normal player and the above problem would be gone :)

Never understood the apple paradigm of making playlist of everything I
to just want to pick an album

Re: [slim] Touch or Transporter?

2014-10-12 Thread Mnyb

Lets introduce the blasphemous idea of going with the specs :)
Transporter has very good data better than Touch (but Touch is not bad
either ).

Even if a component can't be singled out in a listening test it can
still add noise and distortion to the whole .

Said player/dac will be connected to a preamp and a power amp , you want
each component so good that transparency is maintained , and that chain
begins in the studio so it cant be good to add more errors.
When connecting components other aspect can become important as
input/output levels gain ,input and output impedances etc . Mismatches
can happen .

Another interesting aspect is the adjustable attenuators available on
the single ended analog outputs . You can adjust the output level to a
god fit for driving and amp directly without preamp or just for
adjustment in general (as everything has to much gain ).
Or drive active speakers directly . Even if the Squeezeboxes digital
volume is decent you still want to use it on a somewhat high level to
maintain good fidelity so built in attenuators is a bonus .

You could ofcourse add a DAC with better performance to a Touch , but
that adds an interface like spdiff optical or USB (with Triodes app for
USB and 24/192 khz digital out ) . These interfaces can add sligthly to
the jitter (or is asynchronous USB considered jitter free ) , not that
you going to hear that on any decent equipment but anyway ...

When the data to a squeezebox arrives the network interface and
protocoll used is much better than spdiff or toslink ever can bee
totally asynchronous with a typical buffer of 30 seconds for CD material

Re: [slim] Touch or Transporter?

Yes there is a re bug in all the ipk3 cpu based squeezeboxes SB2 to
Transporter they can emit horrible noise at 100% volume a xlink reset
usually fix that . it's very rare it will go years between events . I
had it once on an SB3 just once .

So some kind of attenuation is a good thing even when you skipped the
preamp , some actives have input volume or you can also use passive
attenuators .

Then there is the wifi version and non wifi version of Squeezebox 3 the

For a while the original Squeezebox 3 was aviable without wifi card .
That's the Ethernet only versions .

That's a good thing as the firmware is such that it actually works when
you remove the wifi card hence you can make your own Ethernet only

would be nice to have it if people decide to use it in future but I can
 live without it.
 I've found this upgrade:
 http://www.fidelityaudio.co.uk/upgrades/squeezebox/squeezebox-classic-sb3/
Again, it doesn't mean much to me. I'll call the guy tomorrow and see if
 the SB3 would play 96/24

The SB3 can never do 24/96 the computer part of it can't handle it .

It it sounds a little sales gibberish talk to me these upgrades. A good
thing would be to leave any squeezebox alone and connect a very good DAC
if you need better . you can do that to your SB3 or a Touch or possible
a Transporter if needed or one of these mini computer based player like
squeeze plug or similar that other members are building RasPI odroid ?
Or what they use :) sorry I'm not up to speed on the latest DIY
squeezebox ( there are many of those )

And actually if you run LMS on sufficiently powerful
server/PC/NAS/laptop/whatever it transcodes any file the player can't
handle to something it can handle so the the 24/48 limit of a SB3 does
not really limit you ! You can enjoy any music file anyway .
Unless you really need to run the server on something that does not do
transcoding.

In fact using 7.9 you can even use DSD files on any squeezebox , not
natively but the server does it .

The oficial has some bugs but it does work and it works without LMS ?

But it only supports new players like Touch or Radio none of the older
players would work .
Due to technical limitations of the old players the necessary software
would never fit inside an SB3 or Boom or receiver or transporter .And
spotify can't fix that unless they abandon their encryption scheme.

And I don't think logitech will do any kind of fw work for ip3k players

Re: [slim] New PC - windows 7.0 or windows 8.1?

2014-09-02 Thread Mnyb

Yes , that's the thing there is no way the LMS server can subtly
influence the sound either it is up to the task to fill the players
buffer which is 30 seconds or it's not .

And there is whole can of worms with drivers , kernel streaming wasapi
drivers etc ? And whatnot the squeezebox system just bypasses it's
basically designed to be server agnostic and it is .

For non squeezebox based PC audio there are things that would need to be
adressed like getting bit perfect output and bypass mixers in the OS and
adress the conected DAC or sound card directly etc . My knowledge of
this is not current I got myself a squeezbox so I don't have to worry
about this :) that's another topic but if you use the machine for other

If you have reliable wifi you can keep using that , however that's
usually don't last :) so I tend to use Ethernet to stationary equipment
,this is not subtle either if wifi goes bad you get buffering not subtle
sq differences .

Which version of Win 7 is going to be unsupported ? In many corporate
environments we just got to Win7 pro .

Re: [slim] OK. It's finally happened. My SB3 can barely play a single song without rebooting.

2014-08-28 Thread Mnyb

The usual suspect are the power supply a loose connector to the power
supply or the wifi card .

The wifi card can be removed and then you can run it as wired only .

Funny to read this post as I was just thinking of installing a radio to
my 6 years old son. Just wondering as I haven't tried nor investigated
yet, is it possible to fix the volume up to 50 instead of 100?
Is it also possible to fully customize the home screen with just some
 elements and hide others?

There is a plugin to limit the volume .

Re: [slim] Connection timeouts

2014-08-10 Thread Mnyb

I have hit a compromise , I WOL from completely shut off , booting my HP
microserver , but then it does not sleep .

So I just boot it when I get home from work , touching any of my players
then let my server run during the evening and then turns it off when I
go to bed .

Some weekends it may run 24/7 :P forgetting to turn it off Saturday
night .

prevent the waking up server...connecting...cannot connect... string

A repeat of the process is of course always successful i.e. no timeout.

On an actual squeezebox you just have to wait and dont touch any buttons
(if you do touch a button you may have to repaet the conection attempt )
, I know because i WOL my server from cold ie booting it up .
