Why can't the servers ethernet port be on the same network ? Having a an 192.168.0.x adress ? That may just solve your issue without the need for multiple servers . You may have to bridge the interfaces in some way on the server . The best thing is to actually have a line level or preferably a digital filter in the amp or ht reciever or ht processor . and accept that the squeezebox is source component . If this filte is good (read steep enough ) conected with some DRC very good results can be obtained . I do unload the deepest bass from my main speakers but i do xover as low as possible , given the speakers i use , some experimentation required . However such an active speakers as the AVi ADM9 has its own built in sub xover for a dedicated optional sub , maybe there are more active speakrs with this feature if one wants a self contained system with just squeezebox and speakers and sub . Re: [slim] what to use to run squeeze
My pow . Use something x86 based ,use internal SATA drive one separate drive for the OS ( not just its own partition ) other drives for the music . The OS drive can be an SSD . Use vortexbox or some linux OS on your own , preferably annOS wihtout Desktop ( GUI ) a server OS . You will admin it trough web interfaces and ssh anyway . My HP Microserver is fast enough , today I would have opted for more RAM as the later LMS 7.9 can take advantage of that . So basically in my pow a dual core atom or better is sufficient as a server . And the good old x86 architecture has good FPU and supports most of the helper ap's that LMS uses ,this will mean that you're guaranteed to be able to use LMS fulll potential . The LMS compatibility is not even mentioned on brystons website ? it's ofcourse very easy to add just install squeezelite . Is the whole LMS server also preinstalled ? it can use external storage and play files from usb sticks and hard drives . The manual mentiosn MPD as the player . The price is very telling of the cost of high end, a nice box and overdesigned powersupply is probably the majority of the price . Kind of interesting if you do box count in a typical high end rig every function in a separate box :D And the risk premuim , what if the audio rags hype another brand next year ? You must have really high margins to stay profitable in high end audio over an extended period . Thats why it's a bit stupid that they dont put a DAC in it ,they got the box and the power supply adding another board wont make much more expensive, but of course they want to sell another box to you... Re: [slim] ReadyNAS and FLAC 96kHz
Hopefully someone know about the 104 readynas and can assist . What is the LMS version ? Even if you can get the transcoding to work it still not a good idea to have NAS transcode all,the time . (Your squeezeboxes supports 24/48 btw and that the rate used by the transcoding in your case) And the network load will be higher with higher samplerate files . Pity you did not have the original CD rips around if down convert back you would not end up with the original rip . Both the upsampling and downsampling alters the data slightly , just so you know . You no longer have bitperfect copies of your songs . Backup are esential its a lot of work to rerip ones discs and redownload all purchases :/ If your going to rerip the CD's suggest using dBpoweramp or EAC There are fellows that upsample cd material , but they have players supporting 24/96 or more and usually some very special DAC connected that migth need it. But they never touch the original files . You can make special rules that makes LMS upsample on the fly . Use LMS logitech media server . And there is a WAV-in plugin for sources other than files that LMS has scanned . And with the latest LMS 7.9 you can use to browse folder without scan and play the files . But forget about using for movies or video games , the buffering involved means just to much lag . LMS + squeezeboxes is a music system that's basically works the other way around from what you thinking about . You sitting with your player using its UI or some app pulling music from a computer/NAS that's not in the room with you . Not sitting in from of a computer pushing out music to the players . However there are some solutions for using foobar2000 and also MediaMonkey as players . You can take the complete log files and zip them and post here ( or add the txt files if they are small enough ) , just not copy excerpts from the web UI . Then you can post the full log . If the scan does not finish there is no hope of any decent functionality . So the system needs to have complete scan that's completed trouble free . Did you try with as few plugins as possible ? With or without the iTunes integration on ? You can piont LMS directly to the files in its basic settings and not use the iTunes integration . Another tip seems to be to delete all .dB and .wal files in the cache directory and restart LMS and let it finish its scan . Mavericks do a search on that , and don't know if the fixes made to get LMS to work with Mavericks is done to anything less than 7.8.1 or is it even 7.9 I haven't followed which server version that fits which OSX version . I was a member of BW music club for a couple of years . A vaguely similar idea ( with some obvius differences maybe a case study for you ) . Yes to many subscriptions then you get flooded with music options again . Looking forward to see what irregular offerings this initiative will provide . Any idea on how often a boxsett will apear , but on the other hand a user don't have to buy all the sets . Preview samples would be an idea (30 s of each song or like boomkat does it an anyiyng beep every 30 seconds , but the full song as preview ) Why I quit bw music club , never had the time to digest all the music they provided me with , even if never downloaded most of thier classical offerings , but still to many albums I rarely listen to . Re: [slim] Album Songs Out Of Order
When browsing folders you are not using the embedded tags in the files like track number . But they are sorted like the OS sorts the folders and files . So folder browse find the files alphabetically so make the filenames so the files sort as you want . For,example, name the tracks like 01-track or 001-track . That's the only thing I can think of except shuffle mode . And btw are the file tags in good order it migth confuse LMS if they are not , the tags are used for presentation in the UI even they are not used for sorting when folder browsing so if the track contains a faulty track number tag . Re: [slim] OraStream?
Piont seem to be to traffic shape when needed , you get the full Rez when your bandwith is up to it . But . Only a very limited amount of tracks at the moment . So it can't be a drop in replacement for any current streaming service due to the lack of program material . If there is nothing to listen to the quality does not matter . I can think of it as a complementary service to the ones I already have and to my own collection , but then the price must be lowered. There no piont going beyond 16/44.1 for streaming . You can make extremely weak arguments for 24/96 as a consumer format for disc or download . 24/192 is just silly . And . There electronics track offerings are at 16/44.1 and the classical tracks are for the most 24/96 . Do you need EDO : probably not as most tracks are 24/96 or less even if an occasional 24/192 would show up LMS a would handle it trough downsampling ( yes I think direct mysqueezebox.com support is very unlikely ) . So basically the need of EDO a is determined by the need for USB audio and/or don't having a server capable of downsampling 192k or using DoP . And 96k demands external DAC as EDO won't make the squeezebox support 24/192 internally . But hey . They are also a store so if some of thier limited music offering suits you just buy the albums :) So my questions would be is there anyway to get to thier online store without forking out for a monthly subscription or is this subscription only . Re: [slim] What is the best way to add a room to your server these days?
With an old laptop you have several possibilities to consider. Keep XP or install some linux OS on it . The players to use are SqueezePlay or Squeezelite . Is the internal soundcard good enough or should some USB DAC be used , but this migth not be an issue unless you get really good speakers and the internal sound is really bad . You may have to investigate how to set up the PC for best sound , is there a SqueezePlay version with asio or wasapi support ? But don't get to bogged down in esoteric discussions regarding this . WOL over wifi is a very rare functionality that must have hardware support , it's safe to assume that most laptops does not have that . And the WOL function in LMS works the other way around the players can wake the server . You have to set it up to avoid the deepest sleep modes that disables the wifi interface , but on the other hand kick in a blank screen as fast possible and hard drive spin down migth save you enough power . Or do they just provide an upload service for the labels and leave it at that ? And then what anything else done ? For the usual music service it's not to bad leave it to the labels and artist to present their material as they see fit, it's their call . But if you call anything a Hifi service you committed yourself to some higher standards the lossles vs lossy format thing is a marketting ruse . The real deal would be if they actually acquired the best possible master or version of a given work or had several version to user to chose from . Unaltered by any post compression or volume change . For example if you sell a hifi service you must be well aware of the loudness war and that many labels do mincemeat of their old classics to modernise them and simply ask for the old CD master or anything else done prior to this craze . That would be part of the curating process . The streaming services are not exactly giving us the details on how its really done . which is a shame more quality controll and more transparency I would actually buy into such a service :) Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Ickstream would live at the mercy of whoever is behind it, but LMS Plugins live forever, no matter what. They might not get updated anymore and eventually might lose compatibility with the corresponding service, but they would not rely on a (cost intensive) server infrastructure like Mysqueezebox and a Dev could always pick up the code and continue to work on them. The information found in your blog and occasional posts leaves me with more questions than answers... ;) It can get a little bit more complicated . some service would not really like to have thier secret handshake running on open source software at the end users machines . I had to troubleshoot it as much as possible because there's no way I'm going to catch a blast of that with the volume tuned up. I was lucky mine was way down low when it first happened. It could also be a combination of other settings/gear that set it in motion. Who knows. I do know the seek is a tad faster (or perhaps just more responsive) with Foobar than with the SBT's controls. Maybe it has to do with losing its lock on the stream. Perhaps, just for fun, I'll see if I can delay the seek time and then see if it will get a better lock. Anyway, I'm confident this will not happen with that setting to Enabled. If I thought for a second it would, I would immediately ditch FooSQ. Disabling flac is generarly not a good idea :) so good catch to enable it again thats the default setting for most LMS users/installations . Re: [slim] Adding Duet to New Logitech Home Hub
Different kind of products different departements I use a similar product called iRule with iTach modules ( you don't just have one kind of base unit you can have as many as you like ) , there there some work against building natively squeezeserver controll by some entusiast ( doubt that it get far beyond basic control ) it can do network controls to ( never tried ). It can BTW send squeezebox ir codes so i can make My Touch skip tracks play and pause etc . Then I use iPeng for finer controll of my 4 squeezeboxes . IRule have serial control modules so I use the rs232 connector on my Ht processor and by that I'm able to control my complete meridian HT. Controlling a squeezebox is not just a device , what you really do with any controll in the squeezebox universe is talking to LMS server who in turn controll all the players and this goes far beyond pause and play etc . What you can do on the controller for example save and rearange create and edit playlists controll some server settings view artwork etc use online apps from internet and this on multiple players and also change which player to control. it's much more than sending some remote codes to a device even if they are trough wifi Or Bluetooth . What they probably mean by *wifi* are network codes , some devices accept commands trough your home network the device is connected to the network and it can take some simple commands aimed at its IP adress , but it's practically the same as ir that's the kind of codes you can send , it's still remote controll emulation . Recreating a squeezebox UI on a harmony remote would take some work. Don't underestimate your humble duet controller it is actually a complete Linux mini computer running SqueezePlay talking to your server and the internet ( mysqueezebox.com ). So,I guess making this kind of work towards a niche product don't make sense to the harmony developers their app would probably get very complex fast with just as much code for the LMS server as just about the rest of the thing ? All to make 0,5% of thier custommers happy ? Some home automation systems do some simple squeezebox control but that's more money and probably some additional devices to do it . So I would actually not expect this ( or any other programable remote ) to work beyond sending actuall squeezebox ir commands to squeezeboxes that have ir , ( FYI the squeezebox actually relays those ir codes to the server , who in turn control the player .. ) It so happens that the same company that makes harmony remotes also made squeezeboxes 3 years ago , I would not expect much from that . Or are we expecting logitech to integrate thier products in a way that Apple does it ? ( that would be the day ) Was not harmony a separate company bought by logitech ? Same as UE and Slimdevices ( squeezebox ) . I think they actually managed to blow all 3 companies if you ask thier custommer base . Good luck with the remote I was looking at this and similar products before settling with iRule/iTach the deciding factor was that the iRule system has more base units IR Ethernet serial wifi and relays . So, anywhere in the squeezebox / LMS / Plugin code that uses SSL... it needs to be configured or set to be able to support TLS 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2, and any use of SSLv2 or SSLv3 should be removed. My guess is that there is a config option that needs to be changed in something like: IO::Socket::SSL http://search.cpan.org/~sullr/IO-Socket-SSL-2.000/lib/IO/Socket/SSL.pod#Common_Problems_with_SSL -*SSL_version* Sets the version of the SSL protocol used to transmit data. 'SSLv23' uses a handshake compatible with SSL2.0, SSL3.0 and TLS1.x, while 'SSLv2', 'SSLv3', 'TLSv1', 'TLSv1_1' or 'TLSv1_2' restrict handshake and protocol to the specified version. All values are case-insensitive. Instead of 'TLSv1_1' and 'TLSv1_2' one can also use 'TLSv11' and 'TLSv12'. Support for 'TLSv1_1' and 'TLSv1_2' requires recent versions of Net::SSLeay and openssl. Independent from the handshake format you can limit to set of accepted SSL versions by adding !version separated by ':'. The default SSL_version is 'SSLv23:!SSLv3:!SSLv2' which means, that the handshake format is compatible to SSL2.0 and higher, but that the successful handshake is limited to TLS1.0 and higher, that is no SSL2.0 or SSL3.0 because both of these versions have serious security issues and should not be used anymore. You can also use !TLSv1_1 and !TLSv1_2 to disable TLS versions 1.1 and 1.2 while still allowing TLS version 1.0. Setting the version instead to 'TLSv1' might break interaction with older clients, which need and SSL2.0 compatible handshake. On the other side some clients just close the connection when they receive a TLS version 1.1 request. In this case setting the version to 'SSLv23:!SSLv2:!SSLv3:!TLSv1_1:!TLSv1_2' might help. - or Net::SSLeay http://search.cpan.org/~mikem/Net-SSLeay-1.66/lib/Net/SSLeay.pod Replace any SSLv2 or SSLv3 functions with TLSv1 equivalents. Re: [slim] Touch or Transporter?
Lets introduce the blasphemous idea of going with the specs :) Transporter has very good data better than Touch (but Touch is not bad either ). Even if a component can't be singled out in a listening test it can still add noise and distortion to the whole . Said player/dac will be connected to a preamp and a power amp , you want each component so good that transparency is maintained , and that chain begins in the studio so it cant be good to add more errors. When connecting components other aspect can become important as input/output levels gain ,input and output impedances etc . Mismatches can happen . Another interesting aspect is the adjustable attenuators available on the single ended analog outputs . You can adjust the output level to a god fit for driving and amp directly without preamp or just for adjustment in general (as everything has to much gain ). Or drive active speakers directly . Even if the Squeezeboxes digital volume is decent you still want to use it on a somewhat high level to maintain good fidelity so built in attenuators is a bonus . You could ofcourse add a DAC with better performance to a Touch , but that adds an interface like spdiff optical or USB (with Triodes app for USB and 24/192 khz digital out ) . These interfaces can add sligthly to the jitter (or is asynchronous USB considered jitter free ) , not that you going to hear that on any decent equipment but anyway ... When the data to a squeezebox arrives the network interface and protocoll used is much better than spdiff or toslink ever can bee totally asynchronous with a typical buffer of 30 seconds for CD material Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. I've found this upgrade: http://www.fidelityaudio.co.uk/upgrades/squeezebox/squeezebox-classic-sb3/ Again, it doesn't mean much to me. I'll call the guy tomorrow and see if the SB3 would play 96/24 The SB3 can never do 24/96 the computer part of it can't handle it . It it sounds a little sales gibberish talk to me these upgrades. A good thing would be to leave any squeezebox alone and connect a very good DAC if you need better . you can do that to your SB3 or a Touch or possible a Transporter if needed or one of these mini computer based player like squeeze plug or similar that other members are building RasPI odroid ? Or what they use :) sorry I'm not up to speed on the latest DIY squeezebox ( there are many of those ) And actually if you run LMS on sufficiently powerful server/PC/NAS/laptop/whatever it transcodes any file the player can't handle to something it can handle so the the 24/48 limit of a SB3 does not really limit you ! You can enjoy any music file anyway . Unless you really need to run the server on something that does not do transcoding. In fact using 7.9 you can even use DSD files on any squeezebox , not natively but the server does it . Re: [slim] spotify
The oficial has some bugs but it does work and it works without LMS ? But it only supports new players like Touch or Radio none of the older players would work . Due to technical limitations of the old players the necessary software would never fit inside an SB3 or Boom or receiver or transporter .And spotify can't fix that unless they abandon their encryption scheme. And I don't think logitech will do any kind of fw work for ip3k players anymore , even if spotify did some dramatic changes and this becomes feasible . Re: [slim] New PC - windows 7.0 or windows 8.1?
Yes , that's the thing there is no way the LMS server can subtly influence the sound either it is up to the task to fill the players buffer which is 30 seconds or it's not . And there is whole can of worms with drivers , kernel streaming wasapi drivers etc ? And whatnot the squeezebox system just bypasses it's basically designed to be server agnostic and it is . For non squeezebox based PC audio there are things that would need to be adressed like getting bit perfect output and bypass mixers in the OS and adress the conected DAC or sound card directly etc . My knowledge of this is not current I got myself a squeezbox so I don't have to worry about this :) that's another topic but if you use the machine for other things than LMS it migth be of interest to you . If you have reliable wifi you can keep using that , however that's usually don't last :) so I tend to use Ethernet to stationary equipment ,this is not subtle either if wifi goes bad you get buffering not subtle sq differences . Which version of Win 7 is going to be unsupported ? In many corporate environments we just got to Win7 pro .
