I found a bug that was causing a problem writing the settings files for
squeezeplay. I'm going to put the fix in later today and that should
help with home menu settings and it seems to also help with the
connection problems, at least it has for the ones I've been seeing for
 windows builds of SP.

Try out tomorrow's 7.4 Windows Executable.

It's very annoying; and happens to both MP3 and Apple Lossless files.

Are you playing through Squeezeplay? If yes, there is a long-standing
 bug on this. https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10237

This is said to be fixed (per R.Titmuss Comment 17 in August) but as an

 I had a similar situation.

I suspect that the SB remembers the WAP it was first connected to
(unlike the little portable internet radio I have just bought, which I
am told connects to the best WAP available at the time it is turned
 on).

My solution was to enable MAC filtering on the WAP I did not want the
SB to connect to, and not include the SB's WAP, so it could only
 connect to the other one.

There may well be better solutions, but this works.

[slim] WAP Connection(s)

2008-01-02 Thread Neil Cameron
I have one WLAN with one SSID, but two WAPs. I've been having some annoying
dropouts and performance issues with one of the Squeezeboxes, and when I
went to Information : Player found it was at only 35-40% wireless signal,
even though it was in the same room as one of the WAPs. So I turned that
WAP off - no difference, and it kept on working! So I then turned the
faraway WAP off and the Squeezebox finally stopped. Then I turned on the
nearby WAP and it connected at 100%.
It had been communicating with the wrong WAP! Why on Earth would it do
that?! I'm sure I connected to the right WAP originally, but I may have
turned it off at some point. Do they stick with the most recent WAP despite
signal strength?

Re: [slim] Album partially duplicated after scanning

In my experience this is a common scanning error; and it will normally
disappear on a rescan - at which point you will find that a whole

This is a weird one. One of the albums in my collection has 6 tracks.
The Slimserver scanner correctly catalogues this album. However, it
*also* catalogues a duplicate album, under the same artist, containing
only track 6 (ie. the last track - which may or may not be significant,
I guess). It's not that track 6 is being put into a separate album: it's
also in the proper place. I've done a wipe rescan, but exactly the
same thing happened. Funny thing is, I recall this happening a while
back to exactly the same album, and a wipe/rescan fixed it that time.

I can't see anything strange about the tags on this file. And even if
this was a tagging issue, surely it would just cause the track to be
split off into a separate album, not be duplicated?

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Failing that, is there a way
to delete that duplicated album from the database via the web
 interface?

 I'm running Slimserver 6.5.1 - 10915, running on Windows 2000 Pro SP4.

short in one regard or another. Adding a Squeezebox to the mix has just
 complicated the issue.

I'm no huge fan of the SB's remote's build quality, but it does work
great. Has anyone come across another remote that is as responsive as
the one that comes with the Squeezebox? I've tried a Sony, a Universal
R5, and an X10 remote, but none of them were very responsive to fast,
 repeated button presses.

I should also say that I'm not interested in spending $250-300 on a
Harmony -- even if it works perfectly.

An aside. I mapped these remotes to JVC DVD codes. On the Sony, one of
the buttons cycles through the song title display options. I don't
believe there's a button on the SB remote that does that, is there?

[slim] Update On White Noise Bacground Issue/Bug

2006-01-08 Thread Neil Cameron
This may be related to bug 1718.

I reported a while ago occasional unbearably loud 'background' noise that
happens occasionally when starting a new song on my system, usually when
synched with SoftSqueeze.

I uusally have to restart Slimserver to get rid of it.

I was at a friend's house the other day with whom I 'shared' some files
recently, when it started to happen on all my songs, and only my songs - he
said that this had happened occasionally.

The only unique feature of my songs as that I always set the MP3 vilume to
MAXIMUM on iTunes to get round the iPod EU volume restriction. On a whim I
selected all songs in iTunes and set them back to NORMAL volume. It worked,
and the problem has not recurred.

I am busy resetting all my songs at home to 80% VOL increase only, I need
some boost, and will report back. But this might help solve some of these
bugs previously reported...

But not yet able to get SoftSqueeze to see the home machine.
In Softsqueeze Preferences I am putting the same IP Address that works for
Slimserver in the 'Slimserver Hostname' field; I have '9000' in Slimserver
HTTP Port, and '3483' as Slimserver SlimProto Port.
Is this right? Should there be a 9090 in there somewhere?

Assuming you want to use SoftSqueeze from a remote location to play
music served up by your SlimServer at home:
Forward port 9000 to allow web access to the SlimServer
Forward port 9090 to allow SoftSqueeze access to the SlimServer
Port 3483 (mentioned in your original post) is actually used for
Terminal Services / remote desktop connection. You probably shouldn't
forward it unless you use a secure tunnel (see below).

I don't use the same router/modem as you, so you're on your own with
finding the port fowarding setup; but it shouldn't be too complicated.
You just need to forward those two ports from the outside world (WAN)
to your SlimServer PC.

This isn't particularly safe. Ideally, you would use a secure tunnel
to make it all a lot more, well, secure. To do this:

Install OpenSSH on your SlimServer PC:
http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/

Install a client such as Tunnelier on your remote PC:
http://www.bitvise.com/tunnelier.html

Generate a keypair in OpenSSH. I don't have the steps I used for
this, so you'll need to do some googling and reading, but it's not too
hard.

Remove the port forwarding you set up, and instead forward just port 22.

Then, in Tunnelier, set up C2S forwarding:
Listen interface: 127.0.0.1
Listen port: 9000
Dest Host: localhost
Dest Port: 9000

Listen interface: 127.0.0.1
Listen port: 9090
Dest Host: localhost
Dest Port: 9090

If you also want remote desktop access:
Listen interface: 127.0.0.1
Listen port: 3483
Dest Host: localhost
Dest Port: 3483

You can also have it execute SoftSqueeze automatically if you fill in
the 'Execute' field with the java run-time engine and SoftSqueeze jar
file name. Mine says:
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_07\bin\javaw.exe -jar C:\Program
Files\SoftSqueeze\SoftSqueeze.jar

Hope that helps

Is this right? Should there be a 9090 in there somewhere?

You don't need 9090 (it's the CLI), but 3483. Configure the mapping for
this port, too.

OK. Thanks for all the help so far; I've now entered the world of OpenSSH

Also, do I need a client SSH tunnelling program if I am using Softsqueeze to

Hi Neil,

Good for you - sounds like you've made a pretty good start.

The easy question first: technically, you don't need to use a SSH
client if you're using SoftSqueeze, since it includes a built-in SSH
client. BUT, I would recommend the one I mentioned before
(Tunnelier), for two reasons: it makes it easier to diagnose
connection problems, and it includes some nice utilities (graphical
SFTP for file transfers, auto-launch of remote desktop, remote command
line). You can't beat the price, either.

The other part of your question is more difficult, mainly becuase I
went through this process a while back and had to do a bit of reading
to work it out - I can't remember the exact steps. Richard's
SoftSqueeze page:
http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net/ssh.html
points to a useful SSH howto:
http://www.vbmysql.com/articles/ssh-tunnel-part2.html#part4
I'm pretty sure I just followed through the steps in the second link,
above, and it worked ok. I then did a bit of digging to find how to
change the default port (22) to something higher and more random.

Hope that helps,
Geoff B

Re: [slim] SB3 locking when wirelessly connected

I would look for other 2.4 GHz interference in this case:

- cordless digital phones (as mentioned by sirozha) - maybe not even yours
remember - do you live in an apartment or near other houses?
- microwave (except your interference seems constant)
- halogen lighting (the transformers can wreak havoc with wi-fi!)

Try changing to Channel 1, then 11...report back.

 option is to unplug.

HOWEVER, when connected via ethernet cable, SB3 works perfectly.

I've not sen any other posts on this subject, so would like to hear if

 Details as follows :
 - SB3 firmware v28 and SlimServer v6.2.1
 - Connecting to Netgear DG834G router - latest firmware v3.01.25
 - no wireless encryption or password
 - Signal strength 90% +
 - Tried a variety of different wireless channels (01-13)
 - Tried static and auto-DHCP IP address assignment
 - Windows XP firewall (set to allow ports 3483 9000, as required)
 - Prior to crashing, appears to loose connection to wireless network

 more often crashes.
 - I've tried router re-boots, PC re-boots, switch off fire-wall, switch
off virus virus checker etc. etc., all to no avail

Please help, else next step is to re(ally)-boot the SB3

Re: [slim] Songs out of order, albums misread, etc., v. 6.2.2

I know that there is a setting in Slimserver to 'ignore' such ticks; but it

I reckon it's a bug.

I'm having a problem since upgrading to 6.2.2. Here it is:

Albums I have scanned in now show up with songs in random order. In
some case, not all songs appear.

Yes, I have rechecked tag names. Yes, I have reset the iTunes path
back and forth and created a new iTunes library. No change.

One is particularly frustrating: searched by artist, it shows the album
and then only one song. Search by album, it shows all songs, but the
songs out of order. How crazy lame is that?

I have done multiple clear and rescans. Of course, Slimserver is not
smart enough to provide a progress bar or completion note (at least not
on a Mac) -- downsides to this web based system, which I have grown to
dislike. I've tried letting it scan for half an hour, for a full hour,
 and even overnight.

 No changes.

Smacks of a nasty bug. Ideas?

I don't recommend connecting directly to your computer without at least

Forward port 9000 to allow web access to the SlimServer
Forward port 9090 to allow SoftSqueeze access to the SlimServer
Port 3483 (mentioned in your original post) is actually used for
Terminal Services / remote desktop connection. You probably shouldn't
forward it unless you use a secure tunnel (see below).

I don't use the same router/modem as you, so you're on your own with
finding the port fowarding setup; but it shouldn't be too complicated.
You just need to forward those two ports from the outside world (WAN)
to your SlimServer PC.

This isn't particularly safe. Ideally, you would use a secure tunnel
to make it all a lot more, well, secure. To do this:

Install OpenSSH on your SlimServer PC:
http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/

Install a client such as Tunnelier on your remote PC:
http://www.bitvise.com/tunnelier.html

Generate a keypair in OpenSSH. I don't have the steps I used for
this, so you'll need to do some googling and reading, but it's not too
hard.

Remove the port forwarding you set up, and instead forward just port 22.

Then, in Tunnelier, set up C2S forwarding:
Listen interface: 127.0.0.1
Listen port: 9000
Dest Host: localhost
Dest Port: 9000

Listen interface: 127.0.0.1
Listen port: 9090
Dest Host: localhost
Dest Port: 9090

If you also want remote desktop access:
Listen interface: 127.0.0.1
Listen port: 3483
Dest Host: localhost
Dest Port: 3483

You can also have it execute SoftSqueeze automatically if you fill in
the 'Execute' field with the java run-time engine and SoftSqueeze jar
file name. Mine says:
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_07\bin\javaw.exe -jar C:\Program
Files\SoftSqueeze\SoftSqueeze.jar

I tend to leave my stereo on while I'm gone, as I like some music
playing in the background when I return home.

As usual, today, I had my Squeezebox 3 playing the ambient station
Bluemars on Squeezenetwork when I left for an appointment. The
volume was set to maybe 60-70 db of sound level. Basically, background
or just above background. My McIntosh amp was only producing about
1/10th of a watt or less.

When I returned today, I could hear a roar from outside my house. So I
hurriedly went inside - One channel of my McIntosh amp had the meter
holding steady at nearly 200 watts, and the other channel has a steady
10 watts. The noise was deafening - it wasn't music - it was like
white noise with bass mixed in.

I thought at first my old Sansui receiver that's subbing for my pre-amp
(while my McIntosh is getting a tuneup) had gone on the fritz. A quick
check of other functions (AM, FM, phono, etc) revealed that the source
of the sonic bedlam was the Squeezebox itself. Changing stations
didn't stop the sound, nor did raising or lowering the volume control.

I tried powering the unit on and off with the remote. The noise did
not go away. I had been listening via analog connection, so I kicked
my HT decoder on. There was no output whatsoever from the unit's
digital co-ax output. Yet the analog outputs were still blasting out
 the white noise.

So I unplugged the Squeezebox, and replugged it in a few minutes later.
Mysteriously, the sound on the Squeezebox returned to normal. That was
about 6 pm - I've had the unit playing continuously since then - it's
 been performing normally.

Do I have a defective Squeezebox? Does it need to be repaired or
replaced?? I really don't trust it now, and I definitely WON'T leave
it on while I'm out ever again. I'm afraid of damaging my almost
 irreplaceable Klipsch CF-4s.

I had this problem when I tried to use two WAPs in Bridging Mode; not only
with the SBs but also with laptops - they would continually be connecting
and disconnecting between them and losing signal strength.

I reconfigured it as two separate WAPs with separate SSIDs and separate

nearest WAP, and the laptops will (usually) connect to the strongest signal
as you move throughout the house - sometimes they need a nudge.

Also a wireless telephone exists in my room, it may disturb the signal,
maybe I should change the channel.Am I using wrong channels for router

And the main Question:How can I improve the signal strength?

[slim] Occasional Noise on SB When Synched With SoftSqueeze

2005-11-19 Thread Neil Cameron
I'm on the latest nightlies - for a few weeks I've had a problem that my SB2
will occasionally (only at the beginning of a new song) break into very
unpleasant screeching white noise which overshadows the song and makes us
dive for the remote control, but ONLY when synched with SoftSqueeze. As soon
as I un-synch it goes away. Anyone else experience this?

Setup: Win XP, iTunes

Seriously. Our microwave oven can control the SB2. At least it seems
to. I can't figure this one out. Sometimes (yes, it's an intermittent
feature), when the microwave finishes heating and it beeps, it also
restarts the currently playing song or simply stops it. My wife has
reported that it also sometimes turns on the SB2. It used to freak her
out until she realised the connection with the microwave oven.

The SB2 is about 5-6 meters (15-20 ft.?) away from the microwave oven
and there is nearly line of sight. This is no joke. It really
happens. Anyone have any idea why?

Anyway, the top volume may not have changed but the new volume curve

Can the version of Slimserver on the Qnap TS-101 be upgraded?
When Slimdevices release a new updated version of Slimserver then a special
installation of Slimsever will also be released just for the Qnap TS-101.
All the Squeezebox owner needs to do is download the file and put it in the
Update directory on the Qnap TS-101 and restart the box. As the Qnap
TS-101 starts up it will check to see if there is a file in the Update
directory and if it finds one it will install the new version of the server
software automatically.

It was the words 'special version' that made me ask the question...

In the past people here have mentioned URL Snooper:

 http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/urlsnooper/

Okay, I've just given this a try and sniffed my network connection
while tracks were playing, and it looks like Paste doesn't provide a
single continuous stream, but rather it selects a new track once the
previous track is finished. That's how it allows for the listener to
select artists he or she doesn't want to hear.

For example, when Paste Radio was playing Radiohead's No Surprises,
I used URL Snooper and came up with only these four multimedia URLs:

rtsp://209.133.33.251/ss/radiohead_nosurprises.wma
rtsp://209.133.33.251/ss/radiohead_nosurprises.wma/audio;Seq=2416
rtspt://209.133.33.251/ss/radiohead_nosurprises.wma
mms://209.133.33.251/ss/radiohead_nosurprises.wma

It seems to me that without implementing Paste's track selection code,
you can only play single tracks. I guess if you snoop for a long
time, you could build up a pretty large list of tracks they offer and
make your own playlist, but that doesn't seem to be what you're after.

[slim] SoftSqueeze - No Play

2005-07-15 Thread Neil Cameron
Richard

I have SlimServer 6.1 Nighlty plus SoftSqueeze b9. As from two days ago,
SoftSqueeze has stopped playing, and if I synch it with any Squeezebox, it
won't play either.
It says PLAYING - but the timer does not move and no sound comes out...

[slim] AlienBBC Help

2005-06-25 Thread Neil Cameron
I can't get it to work.
It shows up on the Squeezeboxes and lest me select it; says PLAYING, but
makes no sound.
I have (I think) put AlienBBC and MPLayer files in the right places...
I have no knowledge of PERL, MPLAYER etc though - so lease can I have some
Noddy help? Where do I start?
The FAQ on the AlienBBC site uses words I don't understand...

If I do, how do I log on to the Slimserver Web interface from another
PC - how do you specify the server address?

Most broadband routers have an option to remember what IP address it gave
to all the computers that have ever connected to the router, and only give
out that IP address to that computer.

Therefore the IP address of the slimserver computer should remain
'static'. Just look for the option in your router setup - mine was set to
 this as default.

Hmm. Please could you run Softsqueeze from the command prompt (see the
Softsqueeze website for instructions), and when the audio has stopped get
a thread dump by pressing Ctrl-Break in the console. If you could include
that with the logs it might help here.

I have just found the problem with the version numbers, Softsqueeze is
storing the version number in your preferences instead of always reading
it from the configuration file. So the chances are you do have 2.0b3
 installed.

What type of hardware are you running? If this is on a multi-processor or
hyper-threaded PC could you try running with just one processor and/or
 hyper-threading disabled. Does this help?

Still having a real probem with this as of 6 April Nightly...

The Audio Buffer Underrun errors are mostly harmless, it depends on when
they happen. Does the visualizer still work when the audio has stopped?

If the visualizer stops then this indicates a problem with the mp3
decoder or stream from the server. Could you capture 'player' debug, if
possible noting where the audio stopped.

If the visualizer keeps running, then it indicates a problem getting the
audio data to the sound card. Could you capture 'javasound' debug, note
 this is very verbose.

 Thanks,

I have checked both the slimserver 6.0.1 and 6.1 releases, and they do
include Softsqueeze 2.0b3. I wonder if it is a caching problem with java
web start. You could try opening the Java Control Panel (in you WinXP
Control Panel), and deleting the temporary internet files.

Sorry I have been busy over the weekend, and only just had a chance to
have a look. I don't understand why you are having problems running the
newer version, but that won't make a difference here. The only difference
between these versions is a fix to allow Softsqueeze to run on Java 1.4, I
 had accidentally broken this.

In the logs you sent me it looks like the audio decoder stopped part way
through the track, have you tried using jlayer instead of the Java MP3
Plugin? If this does not make any difference could you send me offlist a
log including javasound, player and player verbose debug, it is not
 obvious what's gone wrong here.

 Richard

 That didn't work.
It is more complicated by the fact that SlimServer and the Sourecforge
download appear to install themselves in totally different directories.
The latter in c:\program files\softsqueeze, and the latter in c:\documents
 and settings\application data\Sun\java\etc etc etc.
Although the latter has since disappeared!

also, try clearing your browser cache to get the artwork. There seems to be

try not to use wipe cache on every nightly. that shouldn't be needed, and
currently is at least partly to blame for the above two problems.
