It's nothing special. a Zhaolu iirc, that had all the component
upgrades. Something to play with though, if you're willing to pay for

You could look under the playlist in the web interface, but I agree that
it would be nice if the playlist name were listed above the current

well when scrolling through now playing (both of which currently just
say 'playlist'.

One of us should file an enhancement request, unless someone can think

I haven't tried, but the slimmed down linux is Linpus Linux Lite, which

Tested with CentOS 4, CentOS 5, Fedora 7, Fedora 8, Fedora 9, openSUSE

from one of those'. But also note further down that 'It should work
with other RPM-based distros, but there may be issues that need to be
worked-around'.

If there is an easy way to return the netbook to its original state,
and if you have your stuff backed up, it might be worth just blindly
trying. Hopefully someone who has actually managed it can chime in, but
since WCS only had 1 post a month ago I thought I'd offer some vague

I guess what I would like to see is, for example, pressing and holding

I did vote for the bug, but still think a simple zapped key press combo

request. Not sure if I'd want to give up the hold.add for play next

I had never used zap in the past, but only just now put two and two

They're both equally expandable, so don't worry about getting the
'wrong' one first.

The Boom is great because it can be carried around the house, but it
might look a little redundant sitting in front of a bunch of other A/V
gear in the main system.

The Duet, OTOH, will always be there, plugged into the main system- so
if that accounts for say 75% of your listening then it would make
sense to always have a player plugged in there. In that scenario the
Receiver part of the Duet would be stationary, but the Controller
itself can act as a separate player through its headphone output, which
could be plugged into a cheap set of computer speakers or powered
monitors and sync'd to the main stereo (or play something different),
to get you started on the multiple zone journey.

Eventually we would like a setup that lets us have the same music
throughout each room, but also be able to have rooms working
independently. No idea what we would need for that setup.

You would only need the player of your choice in each room where you
want music. The web interface or Controller make it easy to sync or
un-sync any combination of players.

My choice for the best way to do it would be a Duet for the main
system, and add Booms to rooms as the budget allows.

And, why has it not been incorporated at this point. Everyone has the
problem with such albums being listed with improper titles or no title

I agree that poorly tagged files can ruin the streaming from HD
experience, and that getting it right can be a right pain. For that
reason I don't want to risk having SC mess up the tags I worked so hard
on, should a bug pop up that, god forbid, erases all my tags (though I
do have a backup HD).

The only app I use for tagging my FLAC files is Mp3Tag, and as
convenient as it might seem to be able to do away with it, I'd vote
against SC including a full fledged tagging app. (not that my vote
counts for much!). There are always improvements to be made in other
areas of SC, and Mp3Tag is free and does the job admirably already.

All that said, there's a new SC plugin that can get album art, so there
is always the possibility someone will write something more extravagant.

SC manages the entire SqueezeBox system. You both are really quite wrong
about what it should do. Its basic feature is to display album titles,
artists and tracks as you scroll through the list, and then to play
those albums. Since incorrect album titles are very common, and those
incorrect titles are displayed in the receiver display panel or on the
controller for Duet, SC should most definitely be able to fix that
problem. To say that SC is not a tagger is correct, but to say that
tagging is not something it should be able to do is not only absolutely
 incorrect, it is stupidity.

I understand where you're coming from, and have also been frustrated by
typos like Artist: Mismaster Morris, instead of Mixmaster Morris, for
months without having the motivation to start a separate application to
correct it. If SC had that ability I'd have corrected it right away.

But if SC becomes a tagger someone will then say, why doesn't it rip my
cd's?!?! Because there's already a really good application that does
that for free, for one.

Again, there's always the possibility a third-party will come to your
rescue. You could also try searching the bug database for open feature
requests, and consider filing one politely if there isn't.

Also, isn't the title a bit ageist?

This is a terrible workaround, but the only way I can think of would be
to set your Random Mix pref in SC to show zero prev played, and build
your playlist on the fly by starting with a random mix and adding
albums/tracks/playlists via play next.

Re: [slim] Artwork Display

Nice work SFC. Is this intended for I.E. only? I notice there is no
shuffle status in Firefox, but other than that it looks pretty good.
One other thing I did was comment out your comment tag. In HTML you
generally use !-- comment_text --. Also, what size is all your album
art, or what size do you find is needed to look acceptable?

You might also give SqueezePlay a try on your setup when it's released
with 7.3, which in full screen mode has a Now Playing display similar
to yours (though the art doesn't scale as well on a big monitor yet).

They would need a moderator, paid or not, to read through every thread.
Given the political thread, I'd say that would qualify as 'world's worst

Be sure to set mp3tag to look at each type of tag separately, too.
Sometimes it is a case of the information being stored in one tag
format, but SC gives priority to another tag format. I only use Mp3,
but this has caught me before where SC was giving priority to APE tags,
but the information I wanted it to pick up was in the ID3 tags.

Yeah, very well, despite the unfortunate name.

Good point about the ID3 tags, and as it happens you don't need to
change any settings in Mp3Tag if you're using FLAC files. It will
automatically read all tags, so just look at the Tags column and scroll
through to any that list ID3 rather than just FLAC (FLAC). Select the
files infected with ID3 tags, hit ctrl+x to remove all tags, and ctrl+v
to paste them back in. Mp3 tag will not write ID3 tags to a FLAC file
(unlike some other named music apps), so after they're pasted back in
the Tag column will list FLAC (FLAC) as the tag type, which is their
way of saying Vorbis tags.

Radish can comment on whether they were ever both in use at the same

As for turning the amps on/off, the Duet Receivers don't have a
headphone output, but the SB3 (squeezebox classic) does. IR blasting
via the headphone output can be used to send signals to the amps for
powering on, if the amp has such an input. I think some other amps auto
sense the RCA signal to control power, but it doesn't sound like yours
do. If that were the case perhaps one SB3 and one cheaper SB Receiver
could be hooked to each amp, so the SB3 could turn it on when needed.

Not sure if it's a chipset or just the CPU and a codec, but the model
is ECS P4M800PRO-M (V2.0), Audio Spec:
Realtek ALC655 6-Channel audio CODEC
Compliant with AC'97 2.3 specification.

The sound card I have (Hercules Digifire) works equally well. I have a
Sound Blaster I could try also, but I'm 90% sure it would work.

This is with an Intel Core2 Duo, 1G ram, and a clean Win2k. There are a
lot more variables than just the card, and I don't think going and
buying an expensive one is a guaranteed solution. I would buy a cheap
one locally and return it if it doesn't work. If the the one after that
doesn't work I'd look at the other hardware/software before spending a
ton on a card (for this application).

Thanks.

Can't say I'd use it right away, but if I ever get around to hooking up
a cheap laptop+Receiver to the aux RCA inputs on my car's cd player it
would be fun to try. It would be great to have a random mix cued and
just say 'next', without having to take the cellphone away from my ear

the Squeezebox while moving, so I'd say keep it around.

But at my PC, I'd find it a little redundant and ironic to set a small

erland;350133 Wrote:
Basically you can do any modifications you like for your personal use
but you can't redistribute them beside sending them privately to
Logitech for inclusion in a future release.

The main limitation with this in my opinion is:
 - You can't port SqueezePlay to third party hardware and redistribute
it without permissions from Logitech. This kind of make sense since
Logitech really only earn money on the hardware, so it isn't strange
that they like to avoid competitors making money on their free
 software.

The other limitations are more theoretical, sure it doesn't allow you
to make and redistribute your own version of SqueezePlay but the number
of persons willing to do that and spend time maintaining their own
version are probably pretty close to zero anyway.

When you think about it, the licensing is pretty logical. Most parts of
SqueezeCenter is GPL but it can't be used with third party hardware
players anyway so there is no reason to restricting the license.
SqueezePlay would be possible to use with third party hardware similar
to Controller, so restricting the license makes sense from a business
 point of view.

Thanks Erland. I agree that SqueezePlay should only run on Controllers,
and whatever license requirements are needed for that should be
enforced. OTOH making it easy for plugin authors or skin writers to
contribute also makes sense from a business pt of view.

Perhaps the two are mutually exclusive, but it would be nice if the
skin could be modified through one file, like CSS, which could be
distributed by the author (even if only not-for-profit). Or if a plugin
could somehow be written and posted by the author, rather than being
submitted and ending up in a Logitech desk drawer.

As you can see you're not really getting your money's worth if you only

Are you playing local music, and if so what file type, or internet
radio?

My only guess would be a wireless reception issue. Is there any way you
can move them around or try wired ethernet to both players? In the
Status pane from the web interface it lists wireless strength for both
players, so if there's a big difference it may be your issue. You could
also try checking Player Settings for any differences e.g. bitrate
limiting.

Sorry I can't be of more help. You may want to consider contacting tech

A wiki entry might help, but would be obsolete soon, and redundant

If anything I think this is a good reason for model-specific forums,

Re: [slim] Software Update on SB3 Doesn't Work!

2008-09-01 Thread Skunk

I was searching for a way to select firmware and found this thread where
you had experimented with earlier versions of the FW. It may be
unlikely, but I wonder if your problems could have originated there.

At any rate, it seems like you could use the same method to load the
7.2 firmware, but I've never needed to try it myself.

Re: [slim] How to set volume increment?

2008-08-31 Thread Skunk

I'm guessing you're stuck with it in the default skin, unless you can
modify the code AND image.

The Fishbone skin has almost twice as many volume increments, if you
haven't tried that yet. http://localhost:9000/fishbone

Re: [slim] 2 suggested enhancements

2008-08-30 Thread Skunk

Being a proponent of the largest artwork possible in Now Playing, I had
a search for the bug. There was this one*, which was marked a duplicate
of the 'now playing issues umbrella' bug**. I added my comments to the
latter, so apologies if there was a more appropriate place or if I
should've opened a new request.

My other thought was to have a 'Show Artwork' screensaver as an option,
in which the covers are the same size as when you choose show artwork
from track details. The artist, album, and track could be scrolled on
one line at the top/bottom.

Re: [slim] 2 suggested enhancements

2008-08-30 Thread Skunk

I did notice they were closed, which is why I apologized in advance if
that was the wrong place. A new bug for larger artwork seemed
redundant, but maybe we should do a feature request for the 'artwork'
screensaver?

Re: [slim] 2 suggested enhancements

2008-08-30 Thread Skunk

Ok, here's the new request:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9343 - 'Show artwork'
screensaver request

It seems like I remember someone in Ben's family liking a particular
Beck song, so I made this example hoping to grease the wheels of
innovation :-) Hopefully I'm not way off base, and it was some other
random person who said that!

Maybe others have a better idea of how it should look/function?

No problem. To realize the full potential of the newest SC, I'd
recommend ordering a Boom :-)

I never would have guessed that!

I know, right?

I added that bit to the wiki, but wonder how people who don't visit the
web site learn about leet tricks like these. I never got a printed
manual so I'm not sure if it was in there or not.

A more picture oriented and easy to read html or pdf document for
getting started would help overcome the 'sonos is expensive but
squeezebox is techy' argument, IMO. IIRC that was the jist of Maxim's
one page review of network streamers in their latest issue.
