Husband is veering towards the duet because he thinks they are possibly easier to expand from. Neither of us are sure of anything anymore! They're both equally expandable, so don't worry about getting the 'wrong' one first. The Boom is great because it can be carried around the house, but it might look a little redundant sitting in front of a bunch of other A/V gear in the main system. The Duet, OTOH, will always be there, plugged into the main system- so if that accounts for say 75% of your listening then it would make sense to always have a player plugged in there. In that scenario the Receiver part of the Duet would be stationary, but the Controller itself can act as a separate player through its headphone output, which could be plugged into a cheap set of computer speakers or powered monitors and sync'd to the main stereo (or play something different), to get you started on the multiple zone journey. Eventually we would like a setup that lets us have the same music throughout each room, but also be able to have rooms working independently. No idea what we would need for that setup. You would only need the player of your choice in each room where you want music. The web interface or Controller make it easy to sync or un-sync any combination of players. My choice for the best way to do it would be a Duet for the main system, and add Booms to rooms as the budget allows. -- Skunk http://www.last.fm/user/TheSkunk/ Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57162 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I agree that poorly tagged files can ruin the streaming from HD experience, and that getting it right can be a right pain. For that reason I don't want to risk having SC mess up the tags I worked so hard on, should a bug pop up that, god forbid, erases all my tags (though I do have a backup HD). The only app I use for tagging my FLAC files is Mp3Tag, and as convenient as it might seem to be able to do away with it, I'd vote against SC including a full fledged tagging app. (not that my vote counts for much!). There are always improvements to be made in other areas of SC, and Mp3Tag is free and does the job admirably already. JEJ;375811 Wrote: SC manages the entire SqueezeBox system. You both are really quite wrong about what it should do. Its basic feature is to display album titles, artists and tracks as you scroll through the list, and then to play those albums. Since incorrect album titles are very common, and those incorrect titles are displayed in the receiver display panel or on the controller for Duet, SC should most definitely be able to fix that problem. To say that SC is not a tagger is correct, but to say that tagging is not something it should be able to do is not only absolutely incorrect, it is stupidity. I understand where you're coming from, and have also been frustrated by typos like Artist: Mismaster Morris, instead of Mixmaster Morris, for months without having the motivation to start a separate application to correct it. If SC had that ability I'd have corrected it right away. But if SC becomes a tagger someone will then say, why doesn't it rip my cd's?!?! Good point about the ID3 tags, and as it happens you don't need to change any settings in Mp3Tag if you're using FLAC files. It will automatically read all tags, so just look at the Tags column and scroll through to any that list ID3 rather than just FLAC (FLAC). Select the files infected with ID3 tags, hit ctrl+x to remove all tags, and ctrl+v to paste them back in. Mp3 tag will not write ID3 tags to a FLAC file (unlike some other named music apps), so after they're pasted back in the Tag column will list FLAC (FLAC) as the tag type, which is their way of saying Vorbis tags. http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Mp3tagGuide -- Skunk http://www.last.fm/user/TheSkunk/ Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54551 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Maybe Radish can comment on whether they were ever both in use at the same time. As for turning the amps on/off, the Duet Receivers don't have a headphone output, but the SB3 (squeezebox classic) does. IR blasting via the headphone output can be used to send signals to the amps for powering on, if the amp has such an input. I think some other amps auto sense the RCA signal to control power, but it doesn't sound like yours do. If that were the case perhaps one SB3 and one cheaper SB Receiver could be hooked to each amp, so the SB3 could turn it on when needed. -- Skunk http://www.last.fm/user/TheSkunk/ Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54511 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

This kind of make sense since Logitech really only earn money on the hardware, so it isn't strange that they like to avoid competitors making money on their free software. The other limitations are more theoretical, sure it doesn't allow you to make and redistribute your own version of SqueezePlay but the number of persons willing to do that and spend time maintaining their own version are probably pretty close to zero anyway. When you think about it, the licensing is pretty logical. Most parts of SqueezeCenter is GPL but it can't be used with third party hardware players anyway so there is no reason to restricting the license. SqueezePlay would be possible to use with third party hardware similar to Controller, so restricting the license makes sense from a business point of view. Thanks Erland. I agree that SqueezePlay should only run on Controllers, and whatever license requirements are needed for that should be enforced. OTOH making it easy for plugin authors or skin writers to contribute also makes sense from a business pt of view. Perhaps the two are mutually exclusive, but it would be nice if the skin could be modified through one file, like CSS, which could be distributed by the author (even if only not-for-profit). Re: [slim] Duet with Two Boxes, won't sync properly..?
Are you playing local music, and if so what file type, or internet radio? My only guess would be a wireless reception issue. Is there any way you can move them around or try wired ethernet to both players? In the Status pane from the web interface it lists wireless strength for both players, so if there's a big difference it may be your issue. You could also try checking Player Settings for any differences e.g. bitrate limiting. Sorry I can't be of more help.
