Re: [slim] How to fix music track that Transporter plays back twice as fast?
I only had speed problems on my Transporter when trying non-standard samplerates like 64kHz. These files play fine in foobar. I can only guess the upsampling leaves some PCM header that it misinterprets while i don't know the header ever reaches the player because LMS sends the music only. Since Squeezeboxes work correctly i get even more confused. Isn't the config people use to upsample in LMS specific for every player? Ever played with that and left some trace? It does truncate bit depth when creating the 16bit unencrypted contend from HiBit. Maybe they use it also while applying their apodizing lowpass on existing 16/44.1 material. Using dither is a must and using a noise shape is best practise. Good noise shaped dither can raise the dynamic range before you hear the noise of dither a lot. I am pretty sure there are not many recordings in the world that really can stress the 16bit noisefloor then. Good noiseshaping relates to the working of your ear, the ATH. HF noise is less critical as it looks like spectral. You won't hear it. Just for fun: http://www67.zippyshare.com/v/o4e9iWZY/file.html It contains 2 silent files. Re: [slim] Meridian MQA - Breakthrough? LMS possible?
An authentic MQA button, impressive... It seems several others do speculate about how it works. I have no idea also but sill guess the magic with old material is really not more as this apodizing. I have played with 2 files and the delta has some cancelation at 12kHz i don't understand yet. My guess is that the apodizer is linear to some point and changes phase maybe from these 12kHz on!? It may also affect lower frequencies. We know how people get horny about minimum phase and similar tricks. A good move from a marketing perspective though. Many will hear the 'better' sound. Very vague speculation. Sorry when i waste everyones time but since i find no clarification that convinces me, i can't resist :) Transporter (modded) -> RG142 -> Avantgarde Acoustic based 500VA monoblocks -> Sommer SPK240 -> self-made speakers Wombat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4113 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102648 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Meridian MQA - Breakthrough? LMS possible?
Alert backwards. I was able to find a moment of pure silence in one of the sampletracks and it may be absolutely full 16bit left. It is really hard to find music that really needs that. In this case they seem to have left silence dither for a moment at the end of the file. It is nice ATH shaped dither curve! In the pic above is the MQA noisefloor against iZotope 16bit silence. I forgot if that iZotope sample has the low or medium strong shape. Now take well shaped dither plus proper downsampling and the claim better as standard cd is not very far fetched. You seldom see noise shaped dither to maximize the dynamicrange on CDs. It may look bad on spectral plots for some but that is how shape works, ATH in use. 19741 +---+ |Filename: mqadither.png| |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19742| +---+ Transporter (modded) -> RG142 -> Avantgarde Acoustic based 500VA monoblocks -> Sommer SPK240 -> self-made speakers Wombat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4113 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102648 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Meridian MQA - Breakthrough? LMS possible?
I really can't find why MQA betters timing and other things. How i read it it simply is a streaming format that keeps bit depth and HF content needed for what HiRes is touted. So for a bitrate of 1MBit/s it may store bits 1-13 lossless and peels away HF content that is of no use. So PCM 24/192 in - 13-24/96-XXX out. There are lossy processes at work. Maybe correction files can restore the original. One problem it claims to solve is that recent lossy codecs are questioned to introduce problems with ringing of the filters near the audible band. Meridian uses filters that don't have these problems. I may be wrong but i saw no exact explanation of Meridian themself yet but some hyped listening. In the end you should simply get the 24/192 original when HighBitrate makes one happy. I still don't believe Mr. Young does all this for the love in better sound. It is more about getting a part as big as possible of the growing HiRes sales. And indeed his marketing is well done so far. Re: [slim] Hi res audio?
I doubt you ever get the Real Studio Master. They sell everything above 16bit 44.1kHz as such. In many cases the studio format is DSD or DXD and high bitrate PCM they don´t sell. When reading about some studios transfering analog tapes they do it with hardware that is capable of 384kHz or DSD and only sell already downsampled or DSD to PCM converted data as studio master. Creating a 16/44.1 of these highres files directly shouldn´t sound any different as the stuff they sell you. Also funny how some studio masters are sold as Unlimited and are 3dB more silent as the limited CD version. Me as CD buyer should feel arsed because these 3dB don´t need 8bit more and for sure already don´t play a role on the 16bit of the CD :) There are more stupid things to this Hires... To be sure to get the best version around it seems atm. you have to buy these Master downloads and you may use a self dowsampled version for daily use. -- Wombat Transporter (modded) - RG142 - Avantgarde Acoustic based 500VA monoblocks - Sommer SPK240 - self-made speakers Wombat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4113 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88756 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

If you don´t tell sox any different it won´t change the loudness Replaygain calculates cause Replaygain only uses audible audio bands for calculation. Since some resampling settings create short peaks while resampling sox can adjust the volume to prevent clipping then with using --norm additionaly. The resulting file will be some 0.1 of dB more silent. I remember a Linn sample that was discussed on Hydrogenaudio. The 44.1 kHz version was 0.5dB more silent as the 96khz version. Nobody knows it was done cause of giving a small advantage to the 96kHz version due to some positive reaction for louder sounds or Linn simply adjusted the level to prevent clipping. I could play the files perfectly with the MusicIP player and Foobar. I checked the files with dbPoweramp and it showed that they had been encoded with flacuda#91. A google search showed up a thread on Hydrogenaudio discussing this encoder that described it as alpha software. I recoded the files to FLAC -8 with dbPoweramp and the glitches went away. I am one of the persons that tested FlaCuda intensively and also contribute in that mentioned thread on Hydrogenaudio. My complete collection is encoded with FlaCuda -8 and there is not one problem file. Most likely the file you downloaded was compressed with a non-standard high compression of 9-11. I don´t see the Marantz anything near the Transporter. The display is lousy small and the managing most likely even worse. Just when i read DNLA i get teeth ache. Please kill me! I had to surrender without my good monoblocks and the Transporter for some days cause of my dullness :( When we build the blocks in an aluminium tube housing we simply forgot to couple ground to earth inside. Yesterday night i corrected this and now i am glued to my listening sofa :) Like others i never had that much added details in swapping a piece of my equipment that obvious. I didn´t know my speakers are able to produce that clean bass. This is the second thing that immediately comes to my ears after the fine added details i never spotted before. Percussion is dramtically improved and recording like Jazz at the Pawnshop seem to have infinte resolution and grow with every improvement you do to your system. Sadly my setup and room don´t give me the chance to have the full imaging other places offer. The only thing i am not exactly able to get is the sound of the highs. Some news! Redone my setup with my 230V isolation transformer and different ideas. The Ground isn´t the problem i have to admit in the hifi setup. Maybe on the PC setup it was. It is my Monoblocks!! Who will know slimdevices in 2 years? - goodbye . . 34) Resampling everything to 48kHz (hey, this is directx standard) Why 44.1khz? - goodbye One idea would be to build a subgroup into Logitech itself like Logitech Quintessential Line that clearly stands next to Logitech and centralize the art of doing things better and may of cause integrate the mastermind companys they have eaten. -- Wombat Wombat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4113 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28821 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
