I see some peeps are hardware modding Echo Dots to bring out an S/PDIF
feed - https://hackaday.io/project/162309-spdif-from-echo-dot The 3rd
Gen Dot should be able to handle the 'HD' streams. so taking the S/PDIF
into the Transporter's DAC ought to be doable.

I picked up a 64gb Playbook very cheaply on the promise they will get
the upgrade to BB10 this year.

Anyhow, in the meantime it's doing duty as a Squeezebox controller and I
installed Music2Touch.

Main problem I have is that with approx. 6500 albums, the albums display
takes way, way too long to come up on Music2Touch. I thought it was a
album art caching thing, but it seems to be slow every time even if the
app is left running to gather anything it wants from LMS.

Certainly has potential.

I'd design it with analogue and S/PDIF outputs in every unit, then have

I've always though the Slimdevices buy-out was the scheme of a Logitech
VP who was then let-go, so there was no-one to fight the cause. After
the Google TV epic fail, I expect 'streaming' was the kiss of death to
careers in Logitech.

Logitech completely threw away everything they had. Loyal customers,
growing recognition outside computer geeks (i.e. Stereophile cover) and
the growing market for computer audio. Even if the core was niche, they
could have developed the mass market from that base with a win32 binary
of LMS etc.

Sonos must be amazed that their main competitor self-destructed

Looking at the Camridge Stream Magic 6, this IMHO could have been the
Transporter II in 2010. Cambridge are still struggling with the s/w to
do gapless. Logitech never recognised the IPR they had there, and could
have done an blitz on AV Receiver manufacturers etc. who ended up using
crappy DLNA for streaming.

Some say Logitech $$ saved Slimdevices after the Duet debacle and delays
to the Touch. More like gave it a lingering death.

Question: Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ?

- Its excellent audio quality
- Best price/performance on the market
- Excellent hardware/software quality of the whole solution
- Great support for online streaming services
- Great support for browsing and playing local music
- The possiblity to extend it to multiple rooms later on
- Its support for third party plugins
- The possibility to directly interact with Logitech regarding new
  features/bugs
- This community and forum
- I wouldn't recommend a Squeezebox to anyone

Following the 7.6 release, I'd recommend Squeezebox for anyone who wants
to learn how to recompile the Linux kernel :)

Re: [slim] Using RS232 on Transporter to send commands?

2011-04-23 Thread amcluesent

I hate it when people resurrect threads from years ago...;)

Anyway, I have a new RS232 control opportunity! My new amp uses -

Port settings: Baud rate: 19200 Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bit:
1 Handshake: None

Then commands like %AAVDNCRLF to step the volume.

I guess I need to hook the volume up/down in Squeezebox Server and send
commands to the TP like -

Command rsps
Transporter only, adjust RS232 baud rate

Command rstx
Transporter only, send RS232 TX

That's as far I can get from the 'documentation'. Can anyone help at
all with example code...

Just put in your mysqueezebox.com login info, and the app will then

- More images of your music collection

- Better Search
- Drag'n'Drop for the playlist
- TrackStat Ratings
- IRBlaster integration
- Big Screen with Album Covers for selection

It's a 'something else'...provide support for those with classical music
tagged with meta-data for composer, performer/soloist etc. by having
this on the 'now playing' screen.

UPnP seem to be 'good enough' for video purposes and TBH, UPnP is
quickly becoming a 'check box' item on TV, BluRay players and
higher-end AV Receivers. Compared to SqueezeBox/Squeezebox Server the
UPnP user experience is garbage, but noobs won't know better.

The wildcard would be Apple Airplay although it looks like Apple's
proprietary instincts will always hinder take-up.

Excellent update! UI is a greatly improved.

In the development plan, please add-in support for people with large
classical music collections.

Things like -

1) Allow album/artist/radio buttons to be configurable to list library
by GENRE and COMPOSER tags
2) In the now-playing display (standard and full screen), allocated
space for contents of COMPOSER, PERFORMER and BAND tags and display if
there.

I wouldn't want to change the whole layout yet to allow more or other
lines.

Fair enough. TBH, given the number of 'right' ways of tagging classical
proposed on the 'ripping/tagging' forum you won't please everyone until
you have a layout editor for the now playing screen. (Bit like the
MusicInfoScreen plugin)

Isn't the whole orchestra playing ?

My preference is to put into ARTIST a concatenation of the soloist (if
there is one), orchestra/ensemble and conductor (if there is one).

Soloist gets named in PERFORMER and BAND is used for ensemble/orchestra
name.

Odd. Your PC is wired to the router and not using wi-fi?

And no plug-in on the Squeezebox Server to do with power-management or
preventing system Stand By?

When testing, all were in standby mode (clock on display).

They are still chatting to Squeezebox Server just to get the time...I'd
still say that the PC is being woken up incoming packets from the
player(s).

Can you try turning off the power to player(s), keep Squeezebox Server
running and then put the PC into sleep mode.

If it still wakes-up after 3 seconds, I give up :(

N.B. The CustomBrowse menu 'Artist Index' is what is used to replace

So, some thoughts -

1) IPTV in England will be dominated by Project Canvas which will get
loads of free advertising from the BBC. Massive barrier to entry for
Google TV.

2) Google and Logitech appear, IMHO, to be interested in completely
different market segments. With the Nexus phone, Google want to appeal
to hackers and tweakers, Logitech is main stream.

3) At the end of the day, once next-gen Atom CPU appear in devices like
Asus netbook with Windows 7 Media Centre, these 'walled garden' IPTV
boxes will dead in the water

It'll made a great MBA case-study on how to mismanage an acquisition.
Just for starters -

+ Bungling the marketing by pre-announcing product
+ Allowing on-line rumours to dominate
+ Loss of market share as people give up waiting and buy Sonos
+ Turning consumer evangelists into apologists
+ Draining down the supply chain just as the market sector was breaking
out of early-adopters
+ Moving to a pricing model based on gouging, wrecking brand values
+ Losing corporate memory and ejecting the founders
+ Having no message to existing hi-end customers on product development

You couldn't make it up!

Re: [slim] Signal only from Germany?

2010-03-21 Thread amcluesent

Is there anyway to get around this?

Run a local Squeezebox Server with iPlayer plug-in.

IIRC the German mysqueezebox.com serves the EU

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic - Newbie

2010-03-21 Thread amcluesent

I'm confused as to what you're hoping to achieve.

TBH, streaming radio is a 'nice to have' feature of the SB3, but not
it's main purpose which is to stream music from your collection on the
music server and do away with any reliance on a PC sound-card connected
to DAC/Amp.

If you really just want to listen to streamed radio with your current
rig, just get a s/w client like Winamp installed the Dell Desktop PC.

If you're already a big user of iTunes and like it, then you may find
an Apple Outlook Express is more to your liking and fits in to your
current set-up.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic - Newbie

2010-03-21 Thread amcluesent

1. Stream music to my nightstand rig using the SB Classic as a
receiver.

OK, so install Squeezebox Server on the Dell Desktop PC and have it
index your files. Install the Squeezebox Classic on the network (wired
or wi-fi) and hook it's electrical digital output to the spare input on
the Monarchy NM24 DAC. That way you can have streamed music and radio
fed into the DAC.

2. Listen to the radio stations available via the SB Classic both at
the nighstand rig as well as the Dell Desktop PC.

So I'd install the SqueezePlay program onto the Dell Desktop, which is
a s/w emulator of a player, so you'll be able to access all the same
radio stations and play them on the PC soundcard.

In contrast, it's taken me 4 MONTHS to get a workable set-up to hook up

Re: [slim] Is third party plugins/applets important for your Squeezebox purchases ?

2010-01-16 Thread amcluesent

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73698

Question: Is third party plugins/applets important for your Squeezebox
purchases ?

- I won't buy any more Squeezebox products unless support for third
  party development is prioritized
- I won't buy any more Squeezebox products unless the third party
plugins I rely on is supported
- I use third party plugins but I would still consider buying more
  Squeezebox products without them
- I don't use third party plugins so they aren't important to my
  Squeezebox purchases

If the Logitech bean-counters withdraw support for plugins and fail to
produce a successor to the TP, I'll certainly jump over to Naim or Linn.

Re: [slim] A Radio is supposed to play music, not silence...

2009-11-03 Thread amcluesent

better yet reconnect as soon as a signal is detected

Make your radio station a favourite, then start playing that favourite.

Add the favourite again to the end of the playlist (so that the
stations appears twice in the playlist).

Set the player to repeat playlist.

When your 'broadband' drops, that player should just keep cycling
around the two items picking up the stream when it can.

Re: [slim] 24/192 vs. 24/96

2009-09-05 Thread amcluesent

You won't get more than 24/48 from an SB3, even with an external DAC.
Anything more gets re-sampled server-side before sending to the SB3. You
need a Transporter (or Touch...) to get 24/96 on the digital-out.

Re: [slim] Can somebody answer this`:-)

2009-08-21 Thread amcluesent

I have my own website with plenty of space. Is there a way to upload my
files there, and have Squeezebox stram it from that location.

The answer is no, music files need to be streamed to the players by a
SqeeezeCenter running on a host computer.

I don't want to stream my music from my computer, since I don't want
it running 24-7

Wake-On-LAN (WOL) is a good solution which has been discussed on these
forums.

People here always use Apple as a great example of producing Joe

Maybe you should follow Apple and monetise upgrades by charging $10 for

But the Czechs stream at 48Khz but there source must be CD, so why
introduce the fugly 44.1 to 48Khz resample?

And now the iPlayer plugin beta can access the 192 ACC streams. On my
TP, these are better then a DAB feed on the S/PDIF input. 128 WMA blows
chunks, obviously.

what proportion music recorded at 48Khz.

I'd say none. I can't recall any broadcasts of original recordings that
could be done by their own team at 48Khz. It has the feel of a playlist
coming off computer with all the announcers recorded way in advance.

Re: [slim] mp3 tagging problem

I checked all the id tags first

Probably a mixture of ID3v1/ID3v2/Vorbis tags. You need mp3tag to clean
tags, read the wiki.

Also, I find it helpful to set the COMPILATION tag so that
Squeezecenter isn't guessing.
