Sorry if I was not clear. It how to get AC to the power supply while
keeping it hidden behind walls, if possible. I use the 16V since I will
be using the amp, but you are right, 12v will do. But even this has
been very helpful. Thanks.

But I think my major question also involves how to power the squeezeamp?
How can one get the 120 VAC power to the 12 or 16 volt DC needed?

Thanks for the thoughts.

[slim] In ceiling setup with squeezeamp

2021-04-22 Thread ericj

This community has been very helpful for quite some time (I was using
squeezeboxen long before logitech appeared) and for that I've been very
greatful.

We are having some work done in our kitchen, and I'm using this
opportunity to put in ceiling mounted speakers. It is behind a wall
from the main setup so sound gets lost from the main system,
particularly with the sounds of food preparation. The goal is not high
fidelity, but the chance to listen to music, news, podcasts, etc. while
using the kitchen. Quick on and off would facilitate use.

Current plans that I would like to bounce off the assembled wisdom here
would be to use a squeezeamp to drive two Polk RCi 80's ceiling
speakers. Currently this is powered by an older laptop 16v power
supply

So the questions I have surround how this should be installed?
1) What is the best way to power the squeezeamp?
2) should the squeezeamp and/or power supply be enclosed somehow?
3) I am planing on using an iphone with a material skin to control this
one (of probably 6 squeeze devices). Are there any alternatives (in
wall panel, etc.) that I should be considering

Alternately, are there good sites that make this simple? Most of what I
find through google assume a large home theater setup. My goal is
much more minimalist.

Thanks you all in advance

I can build hairplay for ubuntu (10.4) without error, and start the
shairport program, but do not see it in itunes or on my iDevice.
avahidaemon is running. What install did you do to get 0.5 up?

I did
sudo apt-get install libssl-dev libcrypt-openssl-rsa-perl libao2
libao-dev libio-socket-inet6-perl libwww-perl avahi-utils
before compiling hairtunes.c

the 0.5 for mac is working fine (re: clicksI have newer istuff so
perhaps that is why there is no problem).

Thanks much in advance for any pointers, google has not helped, and
ideally, it would be great to get shairplay w/ Waveinput...

Unfortunately, my c coding skills are nonexistent. I do get the
following when running shairport

listening...
Established under name '003331D0593E@McBair on McBee'

and checking for the avahi-daemon returns
ps -A|grep avahi

27552 ?00:00:00 avahi-daemon

but on the mac I also get information that the service is being
registered, but that is probably OS dependent.

I'm glad to help in any way, but given my coding days are long ago,
won't be able to push much further.
An enthusiastic thanks for the help in any case.

Security was indeed an issue. Turning off the firewall (temporarily)

Standard Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, should, I hope, work with a standard ALSA

Thanks.

I just installed the 0.5 version of shairplay, forked for the mac from

It seems to stream well (no obvious clicks on a low quality source

--the improvements in 0.5 might help with the problems noted above, or
--might be useful with waveinput for the mac.

One goal I had was to put the audio from the MLB iPhone app onto

[slim] Sonos Wireless Dock

I suspect it uses airplay to stream, and is of limited quality, BUT, I
suspect for many the convenience factor will be significant.

Will Logitech introduce something similar?

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-04-09 Thread ericj

Actually Ipeng is not bad zt 2x on the ipad. One thing that does not
seem to work: One cannot edit the configuration of options on the
bottom bar. For example, one can't replace 'artists' with 'favorites'
etc. Dragging seems to work, but it does not replace the previous
icon.

Also a small request for ipeng when ported to the ipad. Long classical
titles etc. are hard to read when they are truncated. I'm guessing with
all the screen real estate that will be an 'ex-problem'

Finally, while I appreciate the many ambitious suggestions in this
thread. I think rescaling things for the ipad, with a minimum of new
features, would be useful in itself.

Thanks.

Although, truth be told, Lufthansa did have wireless aboard for some

Still a nice feature, often neglected by users, is the ability to

doubt that I could hear the difference between this and flac given
background noise. I'm impressed. Any other experiences

That image scares me. But, fwiw, the server is the MSI Wind, the atom
desktop. There is a healthy discussion in the third party hardware
section.

Re: [slim] Fun with Alarm Playlists: Listen to News and Music from around the World

2009-03-08 Thread ericj

It is just a playlist, which would go with your other playlists, as
configured in basic settings. This file is called something like
morning.m3u but playlists could be also .pls files, or just something
you construct and save. When you set an alarm, just set this to be the
playlist that works.
Good luck...
Eric

[slim] Fun with Alarm Playlists: Listen to News and Music from around the World

2009-01-27 Thread ericj

I have not seen this use described here. Using Alarms in the morning
with playlists, we awake to a local non-challenging classical station,
hit forward to listen to the BBC World Service 5 minute Bulletin,
Nachrichten (news) from Deutsche Welle, the NPR Bulletin, then more
'challenging' classical (i.e. occasional avant garde) from WNYC2.
The details are not important, but the concept of a playlist which
calls a number of streaming sources for waking up is actually a
pleasant way to start a morning.
Here is my morning.m3u, let me know if anyone has questions...

[slim] Re: Powered speakers

2006-08-10 Thread ericj

Acoustic Energy has some distribution again in the US. I just got a
pair of AEGO's from Audio Advisors in the US. $199 including
shipping.
http://www.audioadvisor.com/store/productdetail.asp?sku=AE26-06Bproduct_name=Aego%20iPod/PC%20Speaker%20System

They sound wonderful. And one can hide the subwoofer easily, make a
great setup for those who want to minimize visual impact, yet have good
sound. I would think these are a very good solution for those who want
a Slim Clock Radio for example, with good sound.
Only a very pleased customer

[slim] Re: Possible??? - Remote Squeezebox

2006-04-22 Thread ericj

to return to the original topic, I am currently listening to my
slimserver in the states, cable modem, 256K up, streaming to my
temporary apartment in London. Security iss SSH via Softsqueeze. I
am fortunate enough to have high bandwith ether here.
One issue to think about is how to detect the ip address at home.
Dyndns.org does that for me for softsqueeze.
Good luck

Its probably a good representation of squeezebox buyers, or at least
what are called sometimes 'lead' or 'heavy' users, which should be
useful to Slim, no?

[slim] Re: Can I stream Flac from slimserver to smartphone?

2006-03-17 Thread ericj

If you use Pocket Tunes, an add on player, you can stream the output of
the slibserver, but it must be transcoded to a lower bitrate and an mp3
stream. I do it at 64k and use the Treo's web broser to control things
with the handheld skin. Not elegant, but useful if you have signal...

[slim] Re: Recording Internet streams for later playback

2006-02-22 Thread ericj

There was a very brief discussion, with alterntives for windows and mac
at http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=87217#post87217

The script is a major improvement over the one I sketched out in that
note. The only thing that one might suggest is that the stream could
be transcoded (say from Real to mp3) with lame afterwards for the
non-mp3 streams.

I am listening to last night's WKCR broadcast right now (8am) from last
night's broadcast.

Thanks much for the posted script

[slim] Re: Fun Squeezebox Tricks I: Slimserver as Radio Tivo

2006-02-16 Thread ericj

Let's avoid copyright discussions by stipulating that the goal here is
not violations. After all, the technology of capturing streaming
audio, is widely available, I was just remarking on how it could be
used with slimserver in a tivo-like fashion.

So, how do you do it? This is not my idea, of course, and is cobbled
from various on- line discussions, but my rudimentary script looks like
this:
#!/bin/sh

mplayer -playlist /media/bits/Playlists/WKCR real.m3u -ao
pcm:file=/media/bits/music/Broadcasts/wkcrstream.wav -vc dummy -vo null
;
lame -h /media/bits/music/Broadcasts/wkcrstream.wav
/media/bits/music/Broadcasts/wkcr.mp3 ;
rm /media/bits/music/Broadcasts/wkcrstream.wav ;

I use crontab to start the script when needed, and use a crontab entry
to kill the mplayer instance when the program is done.

I'm sure thatt there are many improvements possible including more
graceful ways of closing mplayer, or piping the output to lame, but
this works for me.

Enjoy

[slim] Re: Fun Squeezebox Tricks I: Slimserver as Radio Tivo

2006-02-14 Thread ericj

IANAL (i am not a lawyer) but recording for personal use (think of this
as off the air taping) is probably not a problem, and last I looked,
while TIVO annoys networks, it is currently legal. I would be happy
if someone who knew more offered an informed opinion.

Quibbles aside, I'll post details whenI return home this evening.

[slim] Fun Squeezebox Tricks I: Slimserver as Radio Tivo

2006-02-13 Thread ericj

I'm surprised that there is so little discussion/sharing about applying
the capabilities of the Squeezebox. There are many neat applications,
but mostly I learn about them by seeing someone struggle to get them to
work. Let me start by sharing one, its not ingenious, but useful.

You can record your favorite radio show on your slimserver machine and
then listen to it at your leasure. For those stations that don't have
a audio on demand, you can make one.

My slimserver lives on an linux machine, so I use mplayer to record the
stream (in this case real) to a wave file, and then use lame to
transcode it to mp3. This is all set up in a batch file which is run
by a cron script.

In windows, programs like total recorder can do the same. I store
them in a subdirectory called Broadcasts, and keep 5 days of my
favorite serious Jazz shows from WKCR, Columbia U.'s fine station.
If there is interest I can post the details, but my purpose was to
start a discussion of such fairly easy, but perhaps not so obvious
Squeezebox Tricks...

No problem w/ installation, but with WinXPPro sp2, and several sound

without bitrate limiting to the device. I do have (too?) many sound

Thanks for the excellent concept.

[slim] Re: Playlist disappear because of missing #EXTM3U

2006-01-06 Thread ericj

I had a similar problem that turned out to be a permissions problem.
The directory needed to belong to the slimserver account in my
particular installation. The issue was write access. I'm running
linux (ubuntu) 6.2.1 and the logfile indicated that it could not write
the playlist. I can now save, edit and otherwise manipulate the list.
