dyohn wrote: Hi. I'm running Vortexbox on a DIY PC with an AMD Athlon processor and 1Gb RAM, so it's a Fedora 20 kernel and LMS 7.8. My library is about 1.4Tb on a 2Tb drive but that's probably not really pertinent to my question. It's not that I think anything is necessarily slow, it's just that I have the ability to replace the MB with a significantly better one. VB will utilize the additional memory and processor speed, but I was just wondering if there is any advantage to LMS. Only if your Athlon is a single core. LMS in itself can not really exploit multi core. So for a dedicated LMS server 1-2 cores are plenty for any normal size collections. I guess that you have 40.000 tracks. Myself, I only replaced my first server as I started ripping my DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-ray collection and needed more drives and a little more umph. My music files are still on the same old harddrive. Scanning is off cause faster, but with my small collection who cares. Development means that my new server (2012) use the same amount of electricity as my old (2009) atom based server. dyohn wrote: How much transcoding does it do? My library is mostly FLAC and ALAC. It depends on what kind of squeezeboxes that you have?! Ideally none; I am not 100% sure but I think that the Touch is capable of handling all codecs and resolutions in hardware. But the older the Squeezebox the fewer Codecs are handled in firmware and LMS (sox) takes over. It is my understanding the SOX is quite lightweight and Works with e.g. Raspberry Pi. Discalimer: I seem to recall that some libraries used in LMS are not working on all platforms... Not fully updated http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Hardware_comparison So according to this it is -Software-based MP3, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, WMA (except WMA Lossless), AIFF, WAV- since SB2. erland wrote: mherger is doing some tests in LMS 7.9 beta at the moment to see if it would be possible to speed-up the database on machines with more memory. Based on the library size in TB I suspect you have a decent amount of tracks and might be affected by this change if it succeeds. So, being able to use more than 1GB memory is not a bad idea, but I doubt you will be able to take advantage of 16GB. Storing the database on a fast drive can make LMS a lot faster at the moment, but this really isn't related to the motherboard. Some people have experimented with setting up a RAM disk and using it for the LMS database, this should improve performance significantly but it's also a bit of configuration work to set it up. Among the feedback on these experiments; wasn't there one of the guys running ramdisk stating that with the new settings (database cache + cleanup) he got the same performance as when using a ramdisk?! If it doesn't boot, you can proceed to measure the voltage on the inside of the power intake. Had that issue with the PSU for my slingbox; after 2 years it semi-died. For my work office setup, which is software only (SBS+SqueezeSlave), I use a 250 GB WD Passport (USB2). The machine that yocky put together is powerfull enough for you to use for all daily tasks. You did mention quiet and minimum power Many people here use a ATOM or AMD Brazo based system as they are powerfull enough for SBS and use little power. And they are fine for casual browsing, especially if you buy the ATOM with added ION graphics or the Brazo; They can accelerate youtube videos and the generel experience. Actually this is what is inside most Nettop, just look for ION and AMD. It might be OK for you if you do not do any FPS gaming and depending on what some work means. Otherwise there are more powerfull options that does not use that much more power and still come in small boxes Are you looking to buy a finished product or put something together? Would a Windows 7-based system have the ability to sit quietly in an 'always-on' function and run the SB server? Sure; the system listed in my signature was pieced together 2 years ago. It runs Win7 and from memory it uses 28W when SBS is handing out music. But not 'always-on', it goes asleep and is then fired up again when I use my Controller or SlimCtrl; they send a WOL package on the LAN interface which kicks the server. It would make sense to work on replacements for the ip3k based products. I do not see the point of sticking a touchscreen in the box; the screen shoukd really be at hand. But with the abundance of 3 party apps that we have, why should Logitech use time on making a new controller. I just had an similar incident. At the time I was running 7.6.0 31902 (last saturday). In the morning I went through a couple of radio stations. Using the web interface. not to speak about microwaves and other noisy appliances... It is really astounding the amount of problems people have, when thinking about the tiny amount of data needed for playing a tune. I swear to cables as it just works!!! and I do not even have the need for streaming video. When I restored the house I live in , I got cables put in the walls and established a central crosspoint. Unfortunately I didn't consider this during a previous stage so no cabled connection in the livingroom :-( So when I got my first Duet I also went wireless. I used a laptop an netstumbler and it could see 10+ networks and their channels + signal strength. I picked the best channel (1 or 6 or 11) and this far no problems.
