Well Windows 7 is 5 years old by now... and Windows 8.0 is 2 years
old...

Windows 7 is still good and solid and will have driver support for some
years to come. Since 2009 it have received various functionality
updates, most notably the Platform Update to the graphics system
required to support IE10.

But will it get IE12 and DirectX 12 for example? not sure

Windows 8.x... besides all the touch malarkey, offers many improvements
that can be overlooked;
- faster boot
- native USB3 support
- UEFI BIOS support
- lower power consumption; cleaned up the internals so that the PC can
stay longer at lower power levels
- redesigned printer handling
- all graphics 2D+3D are run hardware accelerated; this lead to the
Platform Update for Windows 7
- lower memory usage
- ...

All in all a sleeker Windows... when Toms Hardware did a Browser Grand

clearly see that all the browsers performance improved.

By default, the WB provides analog, SPDIF Toslink, USB and HDMI audio

Hi. I'm running Vortexbox on a DIY PC with an AMD Athlon processor and
1Gb RAM, so it's a Fedora 20 kernel and LMS 7.8. My library is about
1.4Tb on a 2Tb drive but that's probably not really pertinent to my
question. It's not that I think anything is necessarily slow, it's just
that I have the ability to replace the MB with a significantly better
one. VB will utilize the additional memory and processor speed, but I
was just wondering if there is any advantage to LMS.

Only if your Athlon is a single core. LMS in itself can not really
exploit multi core. So for a dedicated LMS server 1-2 cores are plenty
for any normal size collections. I guess that you have 40.000 tracks.

Myself, I only replaced my first server as I started ripping my
DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-ray collection and needed more drives and a little more
umph. My music files are still on the same old harddrive.
Scanning is off cause faster, but with my small collection who cares.
Development means that my new server (2012) use the same amount of
electricity as my old (2009) atom based server.

dyohn wrote:
How much transcoding does it do? My library is mostly FLAC and ALAC.

It depends on what kind of squeezeboxes that you have?! Ideally none; I
am not 100% sure but I think that the Touch is capable of handling all
codecs and resolutions in hardware. But the older the Squeezebox the
fewer Codecs are handled in firmware and LMS (sox) takes over.
It is my understanding the SOX is quite lightweight and Works with e.g.
Raspberry Pi. Discalimer: I seem to recall that some libraries used in
LMS are not working on all platforms...

Not fully updated
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Hardware_comparison
So according to this it is -Software-based MP3, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, WMA
(except WMA Lossless), AIFF, WAV- since SB2. But as can be seen from the
table the DAC in the boxes are a limitation for resolution.
No mentioning of ALAC...

Based on the library size in TB I suspect you have a decent amount of
tracks and might be affected by this change if it succeeds.
So, being able to use more than 1GB memory is not a bad idea, but I
doubt you will be able to take advantage of 16GB.

Storing the database on a fast drive can make LMS a lot faster at the
moment, but this really isn't related to the motherboard. Some people
have experimented with setting up a RAM disk and using it for the LMS
database, this should improve performance significantly but it's also a
bit of configuration work to set it up.

Among the feedback on these experiments; wasn't there one of the guys
running ramdisk stating that with the new settings (database cache +
cleanup) he got the same performance as when using a ramdisk?!

I also went for a SSD drive in my server for OS+LMS; keeping all the
music files on the old spinner.

That could be it... and explain why it Works for me...

When I installed my old server (win7) I just enabled WOL on the LAN
interface and in power settings screen off = 5 min, sleep after 20 min.
I can not recall doing anything else.

And when I setup my current server (win8) I did the same.

This way the boxes or apps wakes the server and keeps it running... I
normally turn of stuff when I do not use it and so the server will go to
sleep when I turn of my Touch/Receiver/Radio/piCorePlayer

should be a limitation with the platform...?!

Other than that I have used it with both touch and mouse; of cause there

personal preferences/taste... well there is a trial periode so give it a

Well you should not notice; that is the idea.

If MySB is moved from a server to the cloud or another service provider
you should not see this... maybe a short glitch when the actual switch

Otherwise the mechanisms of the internet should hide it from you.

You can always do a tracert to see where the server is; nowadays it is

Re: [slim] Best android hardware for Squeezebox remote ?

Most of todays Android tablets are running 2.3 and will most likely not
get 4.0 unless you get assistance from XDA.

I had thought about getting a Galaxy S 5.0 or a Galaxy Tab 7; even
considered to get a Kindle Fire 7 from the US.

But instead I got a Lumia 800 with SqueezeRemote... still cant see what
I need a tab for.

Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'

2011-11-14 Thread slate

There are also the hopeless cases like my parents (65-69). My dad used a
pc at work, but the technical stuff does not interest him. Still need
assistance everytime he want to flush his camera.

They have had BO TVs for 35 years and still have to look at the remote
when using it.

They would not be able to install neither SQ or Sonos.

So not sure what they should get when their 29 year old Beocenter 7700
dies.

But it is the same for most of my family; they can connect things but
if it doesn't work they give up... it have to be plugplay... the
ifruit way

Andy's details here

All the changes gave a massive scan performance boost in my setup. You
can see my result in post 6 and remember at that time the SQLite
artwork handling had been around for a while; so the improvement that I
report is only for the code changes.

Anyway the changes also seems to have made it more sensible to various
dodgy issues that worked before; some caused the scanner to silently
chrash and/or seems to run forever

 Yes, that's what I've heard.

You might want to spend $40 on a multimeter. That way you can measure
the voltage from the PSU while under load.

Open the SB3, remove the WiFi card, and power the SB3 up. If it boots,
it's the WiFi card, problem solved. If it doesn't boot, you can proceed
to measure the voltage on the inside of the power intake.

Had that issue with the PSU for my slingbox; after 2 years it
semi-died.
All the light were on and things looked normal but it didn't work.
Tried resetting and everything.
Measuring the voltage of the PSU output (end of wire) it looked ok, but
when connected to slingbox the voltage dropped.
Found a replacement PSU and things are working again.

Re: [slim] What External Harddrive(s) used 4 CD storage

2011-08-20 Thread slate

For my work office setup, which is software only (SBS+SqueezeSlave), I
use a 250 GB WD Passport (USB2).
Used that setup for the last 2½ years; but today I have bought a 1 GB
Passport (USB3) as space was running low.

I choose the Passport as it fit 2 parameters:
1. small 2½
2. as it does not need an external powersupply.

Years ago I bought a cabinet with external PSU for 3,5 IDE harddrives.
Granted 2½ years ago it would have been cheaper to buy a big IDE drive
and use that; but it is noisy and have a lumb of a PSU.

Just so that it is clear; 7.6.1 is still in beta but it looks like it
might be released in the near future... maybe a weeks time.
So what you have seen are the nightly builds from the beta branch;
mainly SBS but also for some of the devices.

If things work for you now then you can just wait for the official
7.6.1 release and upgrade for that.

Personally I have upgraded today so now it is

SBS 7.6.1-33073
Receiver 77
Controller 9478

No radio in my setup; but someone stated that the radio is a little bit
behind as it does not have and option to use a falsh card to recover
from a bad firmware as the Touch have.

 fine.

Forgot to comment on this...

As can be seen from my signature I didn't find an old laptop at the
time and built a server with an Atom dual-core.
With my 10.000 tracks it is pretty fast for me.

About scanning performance; I am running 7.6 and it is wicked fast
compared to 7.5. Back on 29 september I did a comparison on my then

7.4.2 16:03
7.5.2 16:06
7.6.0_31389 3:47

Half of the time saving came from artwork handling 6:26 - 0:23
The first big reduction was changing the artwork handling to use
SQLite. And then in August/September Andy optimised the code further;
but as I recall not everyone would see all the improvements from the
code changes. a x86 library was introduced, but the improvements
from that would only benefit SBS on x86.

Re: [slim] New computer to act as server..?

2011-05-04 Thread slate

The machine that yocky put together is powerfull enough for you to use
for all daily tasks.

You did mention quiet and minimum power

Many people here use a ATOM or AMD Brazo based system as they are
powerfull enough for SBS and use little power.
And they are fine for casual browsing, especially if you buy the ATOM
with added ION graphics or the Brazo; They can accelerate youtube
videos and the generel experience.
Actually this is what is inside most Nettop, just look for ION and
AMD.

It might be OK for you if you do not do any FPS gaming and depending on
what some work means.

Otherwise there are more powerfull options that does not use that much
more power and still come in small boxes

Are you looking to buy a finished product or put something together?

Would a Windows 7-based system have the ability to sit quietly in an
'always-on' function and run the SB server?

Sure; the system listed in my signature was pieced together 2 years
ago. It runs Win7 and from memory it uses 28W when SBS is handing out
music.
But not 'always-on', it goes asleep and is then fired up again when I
use my Controller or SlimCtrl; they send a WOL package on the LAN
interface which kicks the server. In my setup it takes 6-10 seconds
and then music is playing.

Re: [slim] FLAC files slow down the Radio and Touch

A Synology NAS 110j is 800 MHz CPU but only 128 MB so limited space for
handling data.

No personal experience with SBS on a NAS but I would say shutdown all
not needed services on the NAS; and have a look in the Synology
forum... well and here.

You could hang on and wait for 7.6 around June/July; it should provide
some relief for NAS users.

Not telling what have change specifically for SB2/3, but from a checkin
comment:

ip3k Firmware SB3 136, TR 86, SBR 71, SBB 56

- Fixed DNS client handling when server returns multiple A records for
MySB.
- Changed MySB production hostname to ip3k.squeezenetwork.com.
- Includes changes from 7.5 ver 132 and 133, listed below:

- Bug 16898 - Changed keepalive timeout value to 50 seconds for both
SBS and MySB.
- Bug 16760 - Doubled size of S/PDIF fifo from 512 bytes to 1K,
appears to solve audio popping issues when playing
24/96 content with scrolling and visualizer.

In general you can see checkins here

However it is not always clear which branch the checkin is performed

It would make sense to work on replacements for the ip3k based
products.
I do not see the point of sticking a touchscreen in the box; the screen
shoukd really be at hand.
But with the abundance of 3 party apps that we have, why should
Logitech use time on making a new controller. They can't make it better
nor cheaper than a smartphont

Look at the Sonos camp, how they have to wait for the apps to appear
for the different platforms.

I think that Logitech should keep their focus on the infrastructure;
SBS, hardware and firmware

responded but the volume remained the same... I logged onto my music
server and the SBS process was chewing on a core. I restarted and
checked the logfiles.. nothing.

Re: [slim] Occasional long pauses during playback - mysqld.exe culprit?

2010-08-28 Thread slate

It could still be rescanning. I had the problem were it would just do
repeated rescanning ... like it never ended.
Look in your server and scanner logfiles.
Or newt time it happens fire up taskmanager and have a look if there
are processes that eat the CPU

Re: [slim] Listening breaks up when copying large files

2010-07-31 Thread slate

not to speak about microwaves and other noisy appliances...

It is really astounding the amount of problems people have, when
thinking about the tiny amount of data needed for playing a tune.

I swear to cables as it just works!!! and I do not even have the need
for streaming video. When I restored the house I live in , I got cables
put in the walls and established a central crosspoint.
Unfortunately I didn't consider this during a previous stage so no
cabled connection in the livingroom :-(

So when I got my first Duet I also went wireless. I used a laptop an
netstumbler and it could see 10+ networks and their channels + signal
strength. I picked the best channel (1 or 6 or 11) and this far no
problems.

One should also consider the powerline option

ie hiding the cables and power block.

My old Luxman D-107u player is moved to my home office haven't used
it for years
