Re: [slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.
Hi all, I'm having a somewhat similar but less abrupt problem. I also have an SB3, about two years old. A month or so ago, I noticed that the *top third* of the display started to flicker and then go blank. Initially, after turning off the SB3, things were back to normal. But soon enough the problem was back, and only got worse. For a while, the top-third of the display would slowly come back to life with a mostly *static* display, like the clock, but would quickly fade if things got busy (display scrolling etc.). Somehow, it was as if some driver circuitry couldn't quite muster the effort to power the top third of the display. The lower two thirds were as bright as ever and didn't show any hints of problems. I should also say that the unit works perfectly in all other respects as far as I can tell. And that it has been treated very carefully, so unlikely to be something simple like a loose connection. Which wouldn'd be very consistent with fault symptoms anyway. Eventually the top-third died completely. That was upsetting, but not a disaster as I simply could reduce the hight of the letters of the display. But now the *middle* third of the display has started to show signs of giving up in exactly the same way! It's not dead yet, but if the stoy of the sad demise of the top third is anything to go by, it's only a matter of time. And with only a bottom third working (and who knows for how long?), control, and worse, configuration, is a serious problem. Yes, I can control it remotely. And yes, there is apparently software for remote configuration over UDP. But even so. Has anyone encountered anything similar? Searching the forums only turned up a post from an SB Boom user who had a half-dead display. But no replies. Is it likely to be the display itself, or the driver circuitry? In the former case, I've found some post indicating that it is possible to source a new display and not too hard to fit. Even if not cheap, I think I'd give that a try if it was likely to resolve the problem. I really like my SB3, so any advice would be much appreciated! Re: [slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.
Thanks for the suggestion bossy, but it cannot be the PSU: 1) Power is definitely getting to the SB3 as the optical out glows red when I plug the unit in. 2) I am using the same PSU to power the old SB1 I have hooked up as a temporary player until I get the SB3 back into commission. I've had two SB3s come up with display issues that were solved with a new power supply...here in Aus the supplied PSUs drop like flies but once you replace them all is well. Toby10 - I think Julius has already offered me a warranty swapout, so you are correct. Bazzman - Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried that, honestly, and it doesn't work. I know the remote works as I am using that for my old SB1, and pressing the brightness button does alter the brightness of the screen on the SB1. i have to say, if they do anything for you after you opened it, ur damn lucky imo and it shows great consideration on their part. having said that, clearly level one has a different SOP that sucks, and no way the SB3 should be dead after 2 years. i hope a SB# is always offered. i'm not sure the touch should be the flagship product. my sb2 doesn't sit at arms length, but i do like to see the visuals. -- MrSinatra www.lion-radio.org using: sb2 sbc (my home) / sbr (parent's home) - sbs 7.4.2b - win xp pro sp3 ie8 - p4(ht) 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - 1tb wd usb2 raid1 - d-link dir-655 - 35k mp3 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71324 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.
This is the body of a message I sent to support after my SB3 display died: Hi there. I am a long time SB user and have a SB1 and a SB3. Last night, the SB3 was working fine. This morning when I came downstairs, the screen was dead and I could not wake it. I could still play music through the web interface. I then unplugged the power lead and reset the box, but the display is still dead and I can no longer see it through the web interface (I guess it is waiting for network setup to take place, but I can't do it since I can't see the screens). I have plugged my old SB1 in in place of the SB3 and it works fine, using the SB3 remote. I have taken the box apart and made sure that the cards are all seated properly. The red light is glowing in the back of the SB3 so I know that power is getting through. My setup is: IMac OSX 10.6.1 Snow Leopard. Routed through a Netgear DM111P router and Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. SB Server Version: 7.4.0 - r28672 @ Mon Sep 28 17:49:57 PDT 2009 It looks to me as though the display on my SB3 has died. Do you have any suggestions as to whether there could be something else I have missed? If it is dead, is it possible to get it fixed in the UK? I bought the SB3 in the US in December 2007. Thanks for any input you may be able to give me. And this is the response I got from Customer Support. Dear Philip; Recently you requested personal assistance from our on-line support center. Re: [slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.
Yes, that's really lousy boilerplate push-em-through customer service. That said, at some point the SB3 warranty went from 1 year to 2 years. I forget when that was, but I *think* it was before Dec 2007. So your unit could still be under warranty. If so, I hope you didn't screw that up by opening it up yourself. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71324 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

They are sold with a two year warranty, no? You should have another month. Re: [slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.
My deepest condolences to Philipb, a SB3 dying so young is hopefully not the standard. Of course, as an electronic technician I'm used to see faulty equipment everyday, but a low power consuming device like the SB3 is not normally the victim of the usual heat damages or dried out capacitors you normally see. But anyway, the SB3 has a high voltage power circuitry for the VFD,so my first guess would be that the fault is located somewhere around that, but as the SB3 goes out of production, it would suit Logitech to publish a circuit diagram, so the remaining owners had a chance to keep their old equipment alive. Just for fun, I'm the proud owner of a 25 year old Sansui amplifier, a 15 year old Technics vinyl player and several other vintage stuff, but if it is made properly and there is somebody out there with a circuit diagram who can fix it, it will probably last you a lifetime. -- bebop Regards Bebop SC 7.3.x on Ubuntu 8.02(on old Dell D600 laptop), Duet SBCSBR + Boom1 + Boom2 bebop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17061 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71324 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.
To be honest, all that has happened is exactly what we predicted would happen when Slim got taken over by a much bigger, less focussed group. In the early days, when Dean and Sean were there and KDF was the forum guru, there was a sense that anything that could be done to fix a problem, would be. Now, I am told that consumer items are designed to end up as landfill after a couple of years and sod the environment. As for getting it fixed under warranty, I don't see Logitech offering me that after I admit opening the box. Another difference from the old days - when my SB1 wireless card came unseated, Dean advised me to open the box and gave me a personal assurance that it would not void my warranty. I wonder what the predicted life of the touch screen will be on the new SB? -- philipb philipb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33119 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71324 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
