Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

Hi there

Unfortunately microsoft offers no c++ programming interface for mobile
7 phones. I would have to port everything to managed C# or Silverlight.

I'll be exploring those options a little more and let you know if there
are any news.

BTW - there is a new release on my homepage inluding
- support for spotify artwork (thanks a lot to Stoker!)
- improved cover download from Amazon.

Good night
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I'm loving my new HTC HD7 and would definitely find a SlimControl
Windows Phone 7 app very useful and I'd be more than happy to donate or
pay for it.Great work with the app by the way - I might try get an old
WinMobile phone and see if I can get this working without a SIM card
installed - might help me enter names for Spotify searches in the
interim.

Hi Sebastian, thank you for a fantastic application which just seems to
get better and better. I am currently running version 1.5 on a HTC

Once again thanks for a genuinely great addition to the squeezebox

Hi Sebastian

No problem! I don't get notifications anymore either!

Yes I am still interested in this.

SlimControl seems to work correctly with Triode's Spotify plug-in,
everything just works except that the cover art for the track playing
doesn't show up (actually I see a distorted SlimControl logo where the
cover art should be). I don't know if this is an issue with SlimControl
or with the Spotify plug-in. It's not a major issue for me but just
thought I'd mention it.

I've tried the suggestions made buy others in this thread but nothing
helped.

If you want to look into it I'd be happy to help in any way that I
can.

The pixelized, maybe distorted SlimCtrl logo indicates that SC was
unable to download the actual image.

I am based in germany and can not join spotify.
I would like to debug this issue though.

The only way I can think of is to connect to your SB server via
internet.
That involves opening ports 9000 and 9001 on your router and sending me
you current IP-adress.

Sorry Stoker, I don't have a Spotify account so I can't test that.

Rereading my response, I should have been more clearer on what was
working for me.

Basically, artwork is working in all the places I'm aware of there
being artwork.

Last time I checked it, I know artwork was working on the main window,
coverflow option included, plus radio stations with coverflow showing
related music from the library when applicable.

The thumbs load in the playlists fine. Same goes for the library views.
The online app icons show up as well as the radio station icons...

fwiw, I have started testing the 7.6 releases now, and as far as I can
tell, its working just as well(for me) as it was with the latest 7.5
release.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

SlimControl is trying to talk CLI to your SqueezeCenter on port 9000.
But SqueezeCenter's CLI port is probably 9090.

You usually do not need to change the CLI-port setting in the
settings.

What you are seeing in the error log is the HTTP-Server repsonse.
It says something like what the hell are you talking about?
Or in other words This command is not allowed: goodby!

If run SqCntr on a PC its most definitly port 9090 for CLI.
Else check in server settings - information

Does that help?

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-02-23 Thread sbirsen

Hi

Apologies for the delay in responding.

I tried version 1.30 and can confirm that the same problem occurs for
every track that is protected (i.e. where a licence is needed). When
slimcontrol starts caching my library, it stops reading the folder
contents as soon as it comes across a protected track. However if the
track is in a subfolder, the program continues to read to the end of all
folders w/o problem.

I spent a few hours yesterday to get a licence for all my copy
protected tracks, and/or remove the protection. I haven't yet had a
chance to delete and recreate the cache, but I guess this time it'll
work fine.

It would be great however if slimcontrol could add protected music to
the library when reading folder content, even if it can't play it.

Cheers and thanks again for this brilliant software !
Tom

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-01-18 Thread sbirsen

Hello

I have been using slimcontrol 1.00 for over a week now on a HD2, and I
think it is truely brilliant. My previous HD was a bit slow (maybe the
cache was on the SD card, I can't remember), but now the fact that I can
browse my music library makes it a brilliant tool.

I just have one question which I couldnt find anywhere in the manual
and on forums - apologies if this was brought up and discussed before.

When browsing with my HD2, for some folders the tracks subfolders are
only displayed partially, for example only until the letter E. The rest
is not visible. Is there a track limit per folder that slimcontrol can
handle ?

I tried deleting the slimcontrol cache and restarting the software. I
also deleted the music library on the squeezebox server and let it
rescan the whole library without success, to ensure that the contents of
the affected folders are visible via squeezebox server.

Cheers

Hi there

There is no upper limit on the number of folders/tracks.
Deleting the cache would have been my first guess too.

If the folder list is (reproduciably) truncated at the same folder or
track I'd say it's caused by some error at that track/folder.

How large is the truncated folder actually?
Is the root directory truncated or some sub directory?
If it's the root, you could send me your cache-file (or inspect it
yourself)
It's in the cache directory /SlimCtrl/GUUID/SC_fld#.dat.

Alternatively I could check what's going on by connecting to your
server from my place.
That's the fastest way to find and debug the error.

Cheers
Sebastian

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-01-18 Thread sbirsen

Hallo Locuth

What you said made me think, so I moved the last folders that
slimcontrol could read out of the directory. After some back and forth,
it turns out the reason slimcontrol was stopping to read was because of
this track name (don't judge me, I like the song :) :

GaryBarlow_-_OpenRoad_-_8_-_OpenRoad.wma

When I move this track out of the folder the whole folder is read to
the end as normal.

Now I don't know slimcontrol had problems because the track is wma, or
because of the underscores in the filename, or because it was a
protected file. When I changed the track name to

GaryBarlow - OpenRoad.wma

it failed again.

I still have the original file, please let me know if you need any info
further than what I have posted below :
Codec: Windows Media Audio 9
Duration: 4:21.999
Bitrate: 128.016 kbps
File Size: 4,522,597
WM Version: 9.00.00.3250
Seekable: Yes
Stridable: No
Broadcast: No
Protected: Yes
Trusted: Yes
Contains: Audio

Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction !

Hi again

I have an idea...

Please send me the original wma-file.
Plus, I'd like to have the full path to that track (on your server)
That is - from the server's point of view.

For example: if the track is
C:/Stuff/MyMusic/AlbumA/Track.wma

And you have set the SQCenter music directory to
C:/Stuff/MyMusic

The full path from the server's point of view would be:
/AlbumA/Track.wma

Edit: my email is sb AT sciatec DOT de

Probably depends on the phone/sw. On my Touch Pro with a custom rom,
the hard home key essentially minimizes it and switches you back to the

On my Touch Cruise the red phone hang-up button does the same thing
usually, but not with Slim Control for some reason.

Sebastian,
A dialogue box sounds a bit clunky, but would be OK otherwise. What
about if you click on the green connect symbol at the top right corner
to minimise? That's what I tried initially as it seemed intuitive to
me.

Also, as I mentioned in reply to Eric, for some reason on my Touch
Cruise the normal Home key (the red hang-up key) is locked out when

Hey Adam - I hope the move went well.
It's good you're bringing this up again.

Try this in SCtrl:
Settings-Cache-Delete All (or select your server - Delete)
Leave the settings and restart SCtrl.

Now, open any of artists/albums/folders/genres in the browser.
You can observe SCtrl downloading from SQcenter (watch the list

If however these lists are loaded instantly - then,

I noticed at J there were a few albums messed up. Not every one. Just
random ones (one in 10 or so) from J onwards. Not sure if this
happened from the beginning or some time during my use (ie. it got

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-12-04 Thread Rob W

Thanks for implementing these improvements. Is the updated version
available for download yet? The version on your website appears to be
unchanged. Am I looking in the right place? If it's not yet available,
that's fine.

About your response to my second item 2 relating to filter behaviour:
The way you describe the behaviour is how I would like it but is not
what is happening for me. When I wipe right to close the album window,
the selected artist (e.g. Menuhin) is retained (which is OK) but the
underlying filter that I set with the keyboard (e.g. all violinists by
entering Vn) is reset so I now get all artists showing (which is not
OK). This is on the original version 1.0 beta. I think it is quite
reasonable to reset the filter and the selection when you press the
Genre or Artist button. It's only the wipe right behaviour that I'm
talking about.

Thanks,
Rob

Hey Rob

Oh - that was a misunderstanding.
The behaviour you've described is by design.
I figured one would want to have the complete list again when going
back.
Plus, we would need yet another button to clear the filter, if it
wasn't cleared automatically.

If there's an intuitive way to satisfy your needs without confusing the
user about missing list items - let me know.

already? This is really important to those with classical music
 collections.

That feature is implemented

 2. I use tags enclosed in [brackets]. I know many others do as well.
The keyboard doesn't seem to include either [ or ] as far as I can see.
Is it possible to add them to the 09 key, for example please? If not
possible, I can cope by changing the tag delimiters.

I added a keyboard with 1-9 and several special characters like [](){},

 3. When a playlist is displayed and I press the Next/Last track keys or
Pause, it reverts to cover flow. As most of my albums don't have covers
available, I'd prefer it to stay on the track list so I can see what's
 happening.

The current playlist will stay open until you press the menu-button.

 4. Only one artist is shown for each track. Often I have many artists
for a given track, separated by ; so that Squeezebox parses them into
separate artists. I would like them all to be shown, as Squeezebox
 does.

I decided to display only the 1st artist in the now playing screen
(for performance)
When you taphold on the current artwork you'll get the track
information including all artists.

Rob W;489573 Wrote:
 Hi Sebastian,

Great

 1. The scrolling artist + track title under the cover on the main
display truncates some of my longer track titles. It would be great if
this could accept any length title. Alternatively increasing the field
size (doubling it?) would be OK. Some classical track titles are very
long. (e.g. Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 2 in B flat Lobgesang - 2.1 All
men, all things, all that have life and breath)

Currently, SlimControl's scrolling text features allows for text
lengths 3 times the screen with. I'll think about increasing it.

 2. If I use the keyboard to filter a list of artists, select an artist
to review their albums, then return to the artists list the filter has
been cleared. It would be more useful to me if the filter stayed set
when I return to the artists list. That way I can check the albums for
all the artists the filter has selected.

If you go back by 'sweeping-right' it won't be cleared
Hitting the genres/artists/albums button will always show the complete
list with no selection. But I'll consider keeping the most previously
selected genre/artist/album.

 3. In the playlist screen, track names are truncated if they are too
long for the line length. Many classical tracks then appear identical
(see above example under 1). In other displays you handle this elegantly
by providing a scrolling version of the selected item at the top of the
display. Here you show a scrolling version of the currently playing
track name, which is great, but doesn't help when I want to select
another track. Could you word wrap the track title (and artists too, I
guess)and let the selection box expand to suit? Alternatively, a
scrolling version of the selected track would allow confirmation that
the selected track is correct before moving to it.

Text-scrolling within the playlist (or any of the browser lists) is a
tough one.
I will see what I can do to allow for longer track names in the current
playlist.

this could accept any length title. Alternatively increasing the field
size (doubling it?) would be OK. Some classical track titles are very
long. (e.g. Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 2 in B flat Lobgesang - 2.1 All
men, all things, all that have life and breath)

2. If I use the keyboard to filter a list of artists, select an artist
to review their albums, then return to the artists list the filter has
been cleared. It would be more useful to me if the filter stayed set
when I return to the artists list. That way I can check the albums for
all the artists the filter has selected.

Just some thoughts for your consideration.

Cheers,
Rob

Thanks for the suggestions.

I will definitely implement 1.
Very likely 3.
And consider something for 2.

Concerning the 4th suggestion.
Do you have to set a special option in Squeezecenter

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-11-24 Thread Rob W

About your query and suggestion 4:

There is an option I have selected under one of the server settings
tabs to split artists in the artists list. (I can get the exact details
tonight.) There is also a box to enter the preferred delimiter for
artists, I use ;. So a typical artist list that I would enter in the
Artist field for a Violin concerto would be:

Nigel Kennedy Vn; Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra; Simon Rattle Cond;

(The final ; is not required by Squeezebox, but allows me to search
in iTunes for all Cond; to find all conductors, for example.) This is
a very useful feature in Squeezebox, as I can select from the artist
list Simon Rattle Cond and it will find the above Artist entry. I also
don't get a whole lot of combinations of different artists listed in the
artist list. The Squeezebox Classic display lists all the artists
separated by when I have Artist included in the list of fields to be
displayed. The SqueezeServer interface shows all the artists for each
track or album, but always they are separated by a ,. The list can get
quite long for an opera, for example, but your scrolling feature should
handle that OK.

Basically, I would love to have the same features in SlimControl as I
get in Squeezebox as described above. If too hard to do, what you have
now is better than showing the complete unparsed artists list in the
Artists selection, I think.

A couple more thoughts:

Suggestion 1 can be generalised to allow slection of all items in a
list by touching the top bar that identifies the list's contents. This
was what I tried first as it is a natural thing to do.

Suggestion 3 can be generalised to leave the current display active
whenever the track control keys or slider are pressed.

Thanks
Rob

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

Hey Rob

Yes - I will leave the playlist displayed until you press the popup
menu button again.
(the one in the lower right)

I was planning to add a special item 'all artists' / 'all albums' /
'all tracks'
at the top of the current list. Just like on the Duet controller.
(the Duet has that special button at the bottom of the list - I think)

As to the keyboard characters [ / ]
Adding more character to the '0-9' button would make it a bit awkward
to use I think.
I will probably have to extend the keyboard to change to a
numerical/special characters mode with !ยง$%/()[]

What do you think ?

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-11-24 Thread Rob W

Hi Sebastian,
That's fine for the All Artists etc. It's the same way the Squeezebox
Classic works, so would be good to make it consistent (and with the
Duet).

Not sure what the best solution for the special characters is. A
special character mode would be good, but not sure how you activate it.
The key sizes now are about the right size and there isn't really
anywhere to put another key. Maybe make the third character of the 09
key put it into special character mode and show all the special
characters where the letters are, just for one character entry? I'm
pretty sure I'm not the only one marking tags like this, so I think it's
worth doing, somehow.

For the ; delimiter, what I said previously was not quite correct. On
the My Music tab of Server Settings, entering a delimiter in the
Separator for Multiple Items in Tags box causes Squeeze Server to
split ANY tag containing this delimiter into multiple entries. It
doesn't just apply to the Artist tag and as far as I can tell, you just
enter a delimiter to activate it.

Cheers,
Rob

Hi Sebastian.

I can confirm that the cache directory resides in the root of my
phone:
'\SlimCtrl' (the root has a total of 80 MB available for storage).
The app itself is installed on the internal memory card (4 GB flash
that cannot be removed).

I think it's still a good idea to have the option of choosing where the
app should store the cached images, as I have previously had som issues
with other apps taking up too much space on the very limited storage
space in the root directory.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-11-23 Thread Rob W

Fantastic app Sebastian! It installed flawlessly on my HTC Touch Cruise
and works well overall.

I have a few suggestions.

1. As my collection is mainly classical, I often want to select based
on Genre Album, skipping artist. I haven't found a way of selecting
all artists and then moving to the next level in the list (i.e. Albums).
Have I missed something? Could you add it please if it is not there
already? This is really important to those with classical music
collections.

2. I use tags enclosed in [brackets]. I know many others do as well.
The keyboard doesn't seem to include either [ or ] as far as I can see.
Is it possible to add them to the 09 key, for example please? If not
possible, I can cope by changing the tag delimiters.

3. When a playlist is displayed and I press the Next/Last track keys or
Pause, it reverts to cover flow. As most of my albums don't have covers
available, I'd prefer it to stay on the track list so I can see what's
happening.

4. Only one artist is shown for each track. Often I have many artists
for a given track, separated by ; so that Squeezebox parses them into
separate artists. I would like them all to be shown, as Squeezebox
does.

Great work! The above are just suggestions, oriented towards the
classical music collection.

Reason I am asking is because I am considering not to query the user to

The internal memory is much faster plus, some people are having a

Yes, you're right - I have to tell SQCenter to look for the phrase

Hi Sebastian.

Sorry, have been out of touch for some time now. I have been moving,
and everything here is still a big mess. So I have not had any time to
look at the manual.

In the meantime i see that lots of new things have happened, It is a
very sexy upgrade for your software there :)

Everything seems to be running very smooth.

In the short time i have been testing it, I only found 2 minor things
(really only cosmetic at this point);

- in settings Music server settings:
The green square with a V in it is halfway out of the window frame. Its
still possible to use, though.

- main player window:
When playing all songs from one artist, the first piece of album-art is
always shown, even if playing a song from another album by the same
artist.
It would be nice if the correct piece of album art was lifted to the
front, or if the album art slided out, to show the currently playing
album art.

Very nice with the feature to synchronize players (music / volume).

This software just keeps getting better :)

Oh, and a little requst:
Would it be possible to integrate an option to create a MusicIP mix
from a song / artist / album, when browsing the music collection? -that
would be an awesome addition.

Cheers
David

Oh, yes...
My device is a HTC diamond, resolution 480 x 640

I attached some manual screenshots as i cant seem to get my phone to
make proper screenshots!

I have just tested the album art again.

When i add all albums from one artist to a playlist, and start playing,
then when a song from the next album is played, it still shows album art
from the first album, and it will keep showing that.
I can of course scroll in the album art to see the right cover, but it
would be nice if it did that automatically.
The same goes, if it's a playlist with random artists. It will show the
album art from the first known album by that artist, even if the song
playing is from a different album by that artist.
It does change the album art, when changing artist.
(hope my explaining makes sense :) )

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-11-03 Thread Locuth

Thanks for asking.
It's going rather well. I intend to upload 1.0 beta later this
evening.

There are several new features.
SQ.Center player settings and alarms.
A better looking Miniplayer/Multiplayer view.
A context menu in the current playlist.

Right now I am implementing a smoother Standby-wakeup scheme
I'll be posting some more later.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-11-03 Thread Locuth

Unfortunately 320x320 is the one thing that never worked out right.
I've made several attempts in 0.98 to properly handle 320x320 screens.
Plus I implemented a new GUI layout.

But SControl does not recognize this resolution.
Thanks for reminding me of the 0.98 release note.

On your site you refer to 320x320 as a new feature in 0.98. Since you're
releasing 1.0 beta, does that mean you've added 320x320 support?

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-11-03 Thread Locuth

Hello guys

SlimControl 1.0 beta is online and ready for you.
Be kind if you discover any bugs - I'll fix them.

As to the usability - I'd like to give three important hints:

1. Whenever you are in a list (players, current playlist, albums, etc.)

Swipe-right on the list to go 'back', if applicable.

2. The player-list can be closed by swiping-right (as there is no
'back' really^^)
Cklicking anywhere outside the list closes it too.

3. The current playlist (now playing screen) displays 30 items at a
time.
You can navigate back and forth by swiping-right/left. The two somewhat
ugly arrow-buttons at the bottom do the same.
Cklicking anywhere outside the list closes it.

Oh, and a 4th hint.
The current playlist has context-menu that you access via taphold.

I am humbly awaiting your feedback.
Cheers
Sebastian

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-09-24 Thread Locuth

It requires WM 2003 or anything higher.
Only ARM processors (or derivates like PXA).

Already with the advent of WM 2003, most devices were ARM equipped.

Supported screen res: 240x320 480x640 (portrait)
Version 1.0 will also support:
240x240 240x400 480x800 (portrait and landscape)

Yes, unfortunately SC will not work with 320x320.
It does not properly recognize that screen.

Eventually I will switch to another dev-environment which supports WM5x
and WM6x natively. But not too soon.

Many thanks again to DeWayne who helped me figure things out.

Locuth,
Does your app require a particular processor? Or just Window Mobile
2003 or newer? Can you summarize the screen resolutions that 1)
presently work and 2) you are working on?

Tnx, looks like a very cool app!

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-09-14 Thread Chris Moore

Looks perfect.

Actually meaning to dig out an old Dell Axim x50v that must be in a
draw somewhere to try that with it too running at 640x480.

The predictive text works by searching for any character mapped to the
key in any part of the list text.

So on a standard phone keypad a single press of the number 2 button
matches anything with a, b or c. The letters are then sequential so a
press of 8 would add t, u and v to the search string giving pattern
matching for:

at, au, av, bt, bu, bv, ct, cu and cv.

Therefore within a few key presses you can match to a very short list.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-09-14 Thread Chris Moore

Hi,

for your roadmap (as per our email discussion):

1) Support for 800x480.
2) Predictive search - can't think of the correct name for the search
mechanism, but as used in the contacts screen of SPB Mobile Shell.
3) The ability to switch the player off.

Excellent so far... one day in.

Cheers,
Chris.

Hey Chris

480x800 is being tested.
Can you explain a little more about the 'predictive' part of the
predictive search. I have an idea, but don't know whether that's what
you want.

As to the player power, maybe something like below ?
