Sometimes these things go better if you say where you are.

There's an option in your profile to say your location, but you haven't
filled it out.

No one can guess where you might be, other than the fact that you
bought it in pounds. I guess that means somewhere across the atlantic
in the old world for me.

I am keen to hear an offer? Perhaps a PM to me?

I bought it from Progressive AV, all reciepts boxes etc. As you would

Hi,

Just got started with my qnap ts-101 300Gb and squeezebox 3. The

the Multimedia Station web page comes up with the green header followed
by the following message:

No access to this file or folder as it is a symbolic link or does

I've tried sharing the Qmultimedia dir and adding some photos to it

get the above error in the multimedia page.

Any ideas?

In a nutshell, yes. If you authenticate with a specific userid and
password to public rather than as guest or anonymous then all other
mappings will use these credentials and you won't get this error.

However, if you map to public first it is likely that it will connect
with guest / anonymous access. If so you will disconnect first before
reconnecting with credentials

Hi

Am i right in thinking that you cannot use (standard lossy) WMA on a
ts101? I would like to be able to listen to my music via softsqueeze
(that requires the transcoding on the slimserver) and on my SB3 (next
months purchase - yes i know it can do it natively) at the moment I
have 22,000 WMA files sitting on my TS-101 that I can't listen to. I
appreciate that I could convert them all to mp3 but am sure this will:
1)take ages and 2)lose quality. I am aware that slimserver can be used
to transcode WMA by means of LAME and FFMPEG but I can't get them onto
the qnap - has anyone else succeeded? I have access to the full
directory of the ts-101 (including all linux directories) but no
terminal access. If this is not possible please can we have an update
from progressive that allows this rather important feature work.

Thanks All

asks me for the login details (for some reason it fills in by name in

This sort of thing has been driving me up the wall for many months
now...

I have to disconnect and re-map all of the drives using the Install
Wizard EVERY time I restart a computer. The drives remain correctly
mapped if a computer is started from hibernation, though. If I try to
navigate to a drive after a computer reboot only the 'public' drive is
accessible. The others ask for a password, but then say something like
that drive or password is assigned to another user. The only cure is to
disconnect all the drives (the 'public' drive must also be disconnected,
even thought it is accessible) and re-map them from scratch. Only then
is the correct password accepted, allowing me to complete the mapping
process. This has to be repeated for all the computers on my network
every time they are switched on!!!

A previous Qnap ts-101 that was returned due to an unrelated fault did
not have this problem. I also have a Western Digital NAS running with
several partitions/drives which has also never had to be re-mapped

Anyone have any ideas how to cure this?

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-09-19 Thread Michaelwagner

This sounds vaguely like a problem I read about somewhere else ... if
some disks are password protected and some aren't, you can't log onto
the different disks on a single server with different userids.

What?

If disks d, e, f and g are all on your qnap, they all have to be
accessable using the same userid/password combination.

If disks d e are on your qnap and f and g are on some other disk,
then d e need to have the same userid/password, and f and g have to
have the same password.

This appears to be a limitation of windows, or windows networking, or
something.

I'm doing this from memory, and I don't remember where I saw it, and it
doesn't apply to anything I do, so I'm not sure if I got it right, but
it's something in that general direction.

BTW, this isn't totally silly ... the intention is that the user is the
item automatically given priviledges at login, not the disk.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-09-17 Thread matharu

I've had some major problems with the QNAP TS-101 and the built-in
SlimServer. I've had the device for many months and it's only recently
that I've been experiencing these problems.

No 1 - SlimServer
The SlimServer web interface no longer responds. Web browsers state
that the web page is not found. This is at http://192.168.0.4:9000/ and
has always worked in the past. I’ve re-booted the TS-101 many times with
no result. Note that I can access the TS-101 admin pages on
http://192.168.0.4:6000/ so the TS-101 kinda works.

My SqueezeBox states that it cannot find the SlimServer either. I’ve
re-booted the SqueezeBox many times with no result. I’ve got the
SqueezeBox logged into SqueezeNetwork for now.

No 2 – TS-101
Although I can access the TS-1-1 admin pages at
http://192.168.0.4:6000/ using the default login and password there is
a small problem in that the “QNAP Install Wizard” does not now allow me
to re-map the drive…it asks me for the login details (for some reason it
fills in by name in the User Name field) and I enter the
Administrator/admin default but an error message comes up that the
server is not found on the network.

But if I use the “QNAP Install Wizard” to go into the “Configure”
options I can enter the Administrator/admin details and this does work
(the other interesting thing is that it does re-fill in the
Administrator name with “Administrator” rather than my name).

Note that I can use windows to get to the “public” folders which where
(many months ago) mapped to the X: drive…I can use Windows Explorer to
go straight to the X: drive. It’s very slow though and mostly comes
back with a time-out error.

I can also navigate to the TS-101 using Windows Explorer by using “My
Network Places” but it is so very slow that it takes like several
minutes to respond and now mostly comes back with a time-out error.

No 3 – Firmware update
I noticed that the firmware on the TS-101 is v1.1.0 and so I tried to
update to v1.2.1 using the update at
http://www.progressiveav.com/ts101_update/ and using the TS-101 admin
update page but when I hit the update button the TS-101 says that the
update failed.

No 4 – Miscellaneous
Quite often now, the HDD light on the TS-101 is continuously lit-up (no
flashing) for several minutes and in that state the TS-101 web admin
pages are very, very slow to respond.

No 5 – HELP!
I would like to re-install the TS-101 from scratch with a format, etc
but I have no way of installing the SlimServer software. I’m not sure
how far Paul has got in his discussion with QNAP for users to have this
SlimServer install facility.

So, what can I do? Thanks for reading this far anyway!

Regards,

You cannot use a shortcut on TS-101.

So unless Paul is able to provide a work around, for the moment there
isn't a solution. But that leaves me wondering how the Infrant

recently, is working. Presumably it too has these (and iTunes)
limitations.

ts-101 hosted slimserver to see iTunes (for playlists etc).

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-08-29 Thread Michaelwagner

A windows shortcut is a kind of special thing. The file system, not the
application, interprets it (the application can ask, in another way, to
examine it, but in the general course of things it doesn't).

I don't know if a windows shortcut hosted on a non-windows file system
works the same way. It might ... or it might not. I never thought about
it before.

I just did some experiments on my Buffalo Linkstation. There are
actually several types of windows shortcuts, at least judging by their
behaviours.

There is a shortcut to another place in the same filesystem.

There is a shortcut to another filesystem on the same machine.

There is a shortcut to a UNC address. Initial investigation indicates
there might even be 2 different types of these.

There is a shortcut to an internet address (doesn't seem very relevant
here).

Clearly the last few can't in any reasonable way be interpreted by the
low level file system driver, since they are outside it's pervue. I
don't know who interprets them.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-08-03 Thread jimbo_l

Hi all,

I know this is a bit off-topic, but is anyone else using the QNAP's
Q-RAID feature? I recently bought a cheapo external disk enclosure and
a 500GB drive (the same model as in the QNAP) in order to use Q-RAID
and my initial impressions/thoughts are:

1) I didn't realise that the QNAP had an external (eSATA) socket rather
than SATA (they're a different shape) so had to order an SATA to eSATA
cable. Doh!

2) Once I received the cable I had to cut down the rubber part of the
eSATA end to get it to fit into the QNAP case, which seems to have a
recessed connector. Even then it doesn't seem to fit very securely.

3) Once everything was connected there were no problems getting Q-RAID
to work - just switch it on in the eSATA Disk page and hit Apply. The
disks then chuntered away for a while (several hours) with the progress
being shown on the eSATA Disk page.

4) Now that I have the external drive switched on, both disks seems to
spend most of their time chuntering away, even when nothing external is
accessing the QNAP, which means they don't sleep as much (or maybe at
all - I've not been paying much attention). You can 'eject' the drive
(from the eSATA Disk page) and switch it off, and it will re-sync when
you next turn it on, but that's not an ideal solution.

5) There also seems to be a large discrepancy in the reported free
space between the internal and external drives. As I write, the
internal drive has 423427MB free versus 378517MB for the external
drive. I would have expected them to be the same(?) Should I have
formatted it as FAT rather than EXT3? I wouldn't have thought so as I
expect the internal drive would be EXT3 as it's Linux-based (I think).

I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts, anyway.

Cheers.

You can't reconfigure Slimserver for that (without a hack, anyway),
but you don't need to if you can create a link between the new disk and

The update page is kind of missleading. For the first couple of
Firmware updates:

-All-In-One Update
-SlimServer 6.2.2
-SlimServer Database Clear

you need to use .tar.gz as extension

For the more recent updates like:

-SlimServer 6.3.1
-All-In-One Plugin Update for SS 6.3.x

you need to use .tar as extension (not .tar.gz).

It was mentioned somewhere in this mega thread and it took me hours to
find the relevant section.

Hope this helps.

The good news is, if the daft comments get thrown out of the race for
doping, the advice moves up to position 2.

There used to be an old murphy's law public domain piece of code that
spouted out a different law from murphy or another technology source
every time you ran it.

One of the ones I always liked was: it is a mistake to allow any piece
of software or hardware to know you are anxious for the results.

@Paul/Ultra
Thanks, have sent you a PM. However, I should say that since my
original post I have been running a random mix stream from the Qnap to
the SB3, for about 22hrs non-stop with absolutely no problems.

I have physically moved the Qnap to a different location but that is
the only change. All very mysterious.

Welcome to the party B2BM!

This does not sound very healthy. I cannot recall off the top of my
head any other posts in this forum reporting the same symptoms as you
have. The QNAP is designed to run hot so it should not really be
behaving like this, even though the weather has been exceptional.

What version of Slimserver are you using? I would also try letting the
IP address for the QNAP be allocated by DCHP to see if the same
behaviour persists.

I am sure someone else will post their interpretation of events soon.

available on the ts101_update page. We have also create an All-In-One
plugins update file which contains all of the current plugins in one
file.

I have also asked Qnap about the external sATA case to match the TS-101

there is some new Qnap product news in the next couple of weeks - I'll

Hi @. Just received a SB3 Qnap 101 today I'm pretty impressed so
far. Stupid question though, how do I get the updates to work on the
Qnap? I've tried putting both the .tar and the extracted file (not
sure which is correct) of the 6.3.1 update in the update folder and
rebooted the box, but my Slimserver version is still 6.2.2.

Overall, it seems like it could be a really good solution, but the lack
of clear documentation for the Qnap with Slimserver is a bit of an issue
right now I reckon. Cheers.

you can download the 6.3.1 update which just has the .tar file

To install the updates just download the files and reboot - don't

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-07-22 Thread TonyCharman

Hi,
I used to have the local weather forecast as my standby screensaver,
but it may have been pre-qnap.

I have registered with Weather.com and put the rss for my local area
into rss feeds - but there doesn't seem to be a way of just selecting
this one feed. Selecting RSS news ticker as the screensaver loops
through all the rss feeds listed in home / server settings / plugins.

Could someone document the correct way to get the weather feed onto the
Standby screen - so that the time and weather are shown, and stay
there.

Additionally I have put in a plugin request to Paul at Prog AV for
WeatherTime screensaver which fetches the data from weather.com and
shows graphical icons on your squeezebox display:
http://inside.glnetworks.de/2006/03/11/weathertime-screensaver-plugin-for-slimserver

As a side comment, it takes me and I am sure many others a while to try
to find answers to questions relating to Slimserver running on the
TS-101. I can't help thinking that all the information that is
splattered in this SlimDevices forum thread could be better indexed. I
have the ability and resources to put something like a dedicated qnap -
slimserver wiki into place if enough people think it would be useful.
Let me know.

Would be good to get a seperate section in the forum too.
I think a general NAS forum rather than just for TS-101 would be a
great idea. There are loads of threads about different NAS solutions
which would be good to get all in one place.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-07-21 Thread tektite

Well, finally, I have a TS-101 in standby!

Last night I changed the Qnap standby time from 15 mins to 5 mins
(can’t imagine that made any difference). Then I cleared the database
and rescanned (don’t see why this should make any difference either,
but maybe it has). I disconnected the Ethernet cable and rebooted the
Qnap. Lo and behold, it went into standby! I reconnected the
Ethernet, there was some disk activity (as perhaps you’d expect), and
then it went back into standby. Wow!

This is good news. However, as Andy_W suggests, it would be useful to
know exactly what it is that makes the difference between going into
standby and not.

know exactly what it is that makes the difference between going into
 standby and not.

We all seem to have tried a number of things in a bit of a
'scatter-gun' approach, but the end result appears to be success for
everyone... hooray!

1. Change inactivity time to 5 mins. This was definitely a factor when
I had older SS versions and Qnap firmware installed. However, the Qnap
would only 'sleep' for periods of 5-10 minutes, so perhaps that just
happened to be greater that the clock polling time. The test would be
if someone who now has standby working to return it to (say 15 mins)
and see what happens.

2. SS refresh time. I'm beginning to think that this may have been a
bit of a red herring (can't help the fishy references...), so I'll
probably put mine back to the default 30s.

3. Set SB standby clock to 'none'. The defining factor for a lot of
people. I don't think anyone has standby working without initiating
this setting. Does anyone disagree?

4. Clear and rescan database. I fairly sure I didn't do this (I have
certainly never used the 'clear' option. But it certainly seems to have
worked for some. There may, perhaps, be some residual activity in SS
that is stopped or cleared by this process.

5. Reboot Qnap. I obviously did this as part of the Firmware update
anyway. I have found that rebooting clears up non-specific drive
activity, SS 'hanging' or slow response etc.

6. Install new Qnap firmware (V1.2). I'm still not sure whether this is
a factor, but Qnap themselves did say that not going into standby was an
identified problem and a fix was part of the firmware, so...

All in all it's made a big difference to the average working
temperature of my Qnap (it has always run considerably hotter than my
Western Digital NAS and Maxtor external sitting alongside it) and (in
the current weather) a very noticeable difference to the air
temperature in my office. Apart from the obvious energy saving and the
probable extension of the life of the drive, I'm now much happier about
leaving it running 24 hours a day and even for the extended periods when
I'm away.

Sweet...

Now, if only Qnap would do something about the ridiculous amount of
wasted space they use for their banner and logo in the Multimedia
Station...

Thanks for taking the time to include all the findings in one post.
Just clarify one thing. When you say 4. Clear and rescan database. is
that relating to the Clear Library and Rescan Everything server
option? or the clear database file on the Prog AV download page?My
hardrives now going to sleep, but Its impossible to work back and find
out what finally fixed it. I agree that clock setting to none, rebooting
the QNAP and clear library and rescan everything, are the most likely
fixes.

I was personally referring to the former, as the latter was (I believe)
largely put there to solve a separate SS update/compilation album issue,
but as I did neither, I'm not sure what process other people might
attribute to their particular success.

Yes, well summarised. On point 6, to be fair, it wasn't not going into
standby was an identified problem; rather Qnap claim there was an
error with standby mode (drives do not run HDD sleep mode on
schedule). This implies that it was *when* it happened rather than
*whether*.

In relation to the clear and rescan, I was using the standard server
option.

It was never really clear what was actually meant by do not run HDD
sleep mode on schedule. Since that line was never expanded upon, I
took it to mean that when a 'standby' (unless there is another mode
called 'sleep') schedule was imposed (e.g. after 15 mins of inactivity)
it just didn't happen, rather than it occurring at some random time
after, or indeed before, the specified time. I imagine that the most
likely reason for it being bought to their attention in the first place
is if it was reported to never happened at all...

Ha well, who cares!! I can now say my Qnap is really cool and mean
it. Sorry... sorry... sorry...

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-07-20 Thread Smiffy

I like most have had the trouble with the non sleeping Ts101. However
Following the suggestion from simonjedrake to change the power off
screen saver to None, it still would not sleep even after a re-booting
the Ts101?

I eventually found that I had to Clear and Rescan the database from the
Web Interface. Now it sleeps peacefully and is much cooler in this hot
weather.

Thanks for the tip simonjedrake.

Looks like you guys may have got a solution sorted to the powering down
issue. I will be testing at the weekend but if anybody else can try it
as well and report back here that would be great.

SlimServer 6.3.1 and LastFM 117 are now available to download from
http://www.progressiveav.com/ts101_update - sorry about the delay on
6.3.1, I missed it being released.

Thanks

Switched off the time/date display on SB3 and my TS101 160GB goes into
standby with no problems (ie green led goes off). I set it to sleep
after 5 minutes from the admin page on the TS101 and i have tested it
repeatedly this morning. It has gone into standby without fail
everytime. For info, I am running the latest firmware from the QNAP
website with no apparent issues and I have not altered the default
 browser rate on slimserver.

It still displays the LAN light and runs warm (like it was designed),
but nowhere near as hot as it did previously. I do miss the clock on
 the SB3 though!
