I'm sorry, I now realize that you are referring to the WWW
interface - I thought you were saying that the image filenames
were actually appearing on the Squeezebox itself.

If this is really a problem for you, perhaps there's a way using
permissions or filenaming that would allow you to keep the
images in place but have slim ignore them.

Hi all
This thread has wondered OT from original posters question, and I have
to admit to having more than a small interest in the final answer!!
Surely someone knows whether we are supposed to be able to turn artwork
off. Or is there no longer a concern about artwork's impact on
slimserver??!!

Please, pretty please, any answers?

By turn artwork off do you mean not display it? 6.5 now has a
gallery mode (which shows artwork) and a list mode which doesn't.
Icon top right of the left hand pane in browse album, for example.

I wouldn't have thought that simply having references to artwork in the
database would impact performance?

Artwork a much less of a concern, as it is collected by a separate
process, cached by the server
and somewhat more easily left out by not selecting 'gallery mode'.
The original pref was put in becuase it was a very long post-scan
process
plus affected the presence of the browse artwork option, and caused it
to take a very long time to load. The appearance of single artworks on
song pages and album pages was not the main reason for that pref.

Thanks
Firstly in reply to ceejay - I was meaning actually turning off looking
for artwork at all (like in older SS releases), have already discovered
the joys of the gallery!! But thanks for putting a thought forward! :)

However, I gather from KDF's post that SS isn't as bogged down by
artwork as the older servers were. But why is this still in SS 6.5 help
section then?! :)

Memory usage for Artwork

Artwork for large song libraries places a significant memory load on
the slimserver. There are references to the cover art kept in memory of
the SlimServer for each song. This can add up fairly quickly.

The SlimServer stores, in memory, the path where the artwork can be
found for each song. Long path names and many songs can cause the
SlimServer to use more memory than is phycially installed on the
server. This can have any of a number of impacts, from slow performance
to complete failure of the SlimServer to run. The raw artwork file is
read on demand, so artwork file size has no impact on the SlimServer
itself.

You can turn off the artwork scan completely to save memory usage. Its
in Server Settings, additional, performance.

This is what I was originally referring to and hope to avoid - even if
it means no artwork at all

Thanks

Nic

More about my original question,

I now see that there is no 'Do not look for artwork' option anywhere.

All I want is to browse my Music Folder -- click one of the folders I
have in there -- and see the list of files in there without having
some album's pic at the top of the list.

Is that not possible? It used to be.

Thanks

[slim] Re: Turn off artwork in 6.5?

2006-10-06 Thread davep

It is indeed correct that if you do Browse/Music Folder and then drill
down through whatever is your particular directory structure to get to
the bottom folder level - an individual album - you do see the cover
image above the list of tracks on that album when you open this folder.
I can also confirm that if artwork is not present for any album you get
no image, so there is no annoying question mark graphic as in some
other views.

Personally I cannot see any drawback with this. If I have gone to the
trouble of getting artwork for each of my albums I would not mind
actually seeing it at some stage. If we can be assured that this adds
no overhead or instability to the operation of SS or the rescanning
then it seems fine to me the way it is. No doubt there could be a
switch devised to allow this to be turned off but, frankly, why
bother.

Just my 2p of course.

I believe that slimserver applies album artwork found in a folder

Either delete the artwork from the one song or change your directory
structure. IMHO keeping thousands of files in one folder is not a very
good idea anyway (performance, file browsing).

Thanks -- I'll restructure everything by artist/album folders this
weekend. When I first got my SB2 a while ago, I thought I had read
that all the music had to be in one folder. Guess I had misinterpreted
that to mean no sub-directories. (The 2 sub-directories that I have now
were actually created by accident.)

Any recommendations on a good program to restructure this
automatically, based on existing tags?

If you're on Windows, mp3tag (freeware) will do this easily. I am
pretty sure that TagRename, and probably several others, will also do
it.

Well, I couldn't wait for the weekend -- I got up to speed on mp3tag
tonight, learned about using the \ to create sub-directories from the
tag fields, fixed a few more tags, then let it rip on restructuring all
my tunes. Amazing how well that went - I've now got a nicely organized
\My Music directory. Only a few duplicate songs now remain at the root
level. I even grabbed a few album covers off of Amazon.

I then did a clear/rescan in slimserver, and voila, my artwork problem
is gone!
Thank you slimpy and aubuti!

Hi
You have not gone blind! I too remember that setting, and after
upgrading to 6.5 can also no longer find it. I have posted a question
relating to this a week or so ago - but alas have not had an answer
(yet?). Whether SS doesn't bother to look for artwork unless you are in
gallery view (fishbone) I don't know. What I am concerned about is that
artwork can seriously clog a large library down, which is why I think
the option to disable it was originally there, are we supposed to
manually remove artwork if performance is hit by a growing library?
