 Portable applications are your answer.

These are applications that you can install on a USB thumb drive and
can be used on *any* PC that you care to plug the drive into.

You are in luck. Foorbar can be installed in portable mode already.
It is just a selection you can make during installation.
http://www.foobar2000.org/?page=ReleaseNotesversion=096

Otherwise there are several other portable media players available
through the portable apps web site, as well as lots of other useful
stuff:
http://portableapps.com

and in particular here:

http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video

Get the fastest memory stick you can afford. Generally apps work a bit
slower off a stick than they do off the PC (particularly a slight lack
of responsiveness or lag) but still better than not having the app at
all.

Actually portable applications can usually be installed direct on a PC,
even if conventional installations are blocked. This is because they do
not interfere with the Windows Registry. However installing on a stick
leaves you less likely to be caught out by your employer's application
police.

I know this is a ridiculous and retrograde idea, but I'd love to see a
SB with a quality am/fm tuner, and perhaps the ability to time shift

Unlike most of you, I view my SBs as primarily radio by other means.

Yup. I'd really like to see this too. With USB support for large drives
(1tb plus) and the ability for other players to use the same music
library. I am after stability and if running (even a reduced
functionality) SC/SP from a hardware player enabled me to get my
computer out of the playing/listening loop then I'd be all for it.

A web interface for configuration nitty gritty might be useful though.

I'd also welcome a rethink of the ui (and especially no repeat of the
controller ui)... and would hope that the implementation of a touch
screen might encourage that.

I personally don't want the USB option - but batteries would be
brilliant.

One thing though, I think the USB option is not as complex as needing a
PC - there are plenty of very small, very inexpensive amp/speaker
devices that accept USB sticks. (many of them are iPod docks or similar,
but others are not)

That said - an inexpensive mp3 player and a stereo cable makes just as
much - or more - sense.

But the Boom does have an input jack. You can plug any old MP3 player

Limited to WMA MP3 playback? Does it even have digital outs (all
specs are in German)? Limited to UPNP utilizing WMP or iTunes? No
access to online music services? 5x bigger than an SB3?
Of course not. Digital out is AFAIR only RCA, but it's there. There's
also a website similar to SN to add/edit web radio favorites, get
podcasts and so on. Unsure about additional services, didn't try it, but
they're not very important for me. Really important is only MP3 and web
radio. And MP3 directly via USB, without dedicated, pricey and energy
eating $$ server hardware/NAS which has to be maintained and
administrated. Just put a simple, noiseless and cheap USB Stick in it
and have access to 16 or more GB of MP3s, what means at least 200 CD
albums ripped for me. O.k., no NTFS capability, FAT32 only, but that's
o.k.

I only returned the Muvid to the vendor because of its lousy WLAN
performance. In german hifi communities I was told that many other users
see an excellent WLAN performance, but my copy was bad. Maybe the
internal antenna connector was loose, but one of the case screws was
warranty sealed and I didn't want to lose the warranty ... There was no
other copy in the store, so I went to a SB classic which is a nice piece
of hardware, too. It sounds clearly better, supports more file formats,
has more online capabilities and the case is very well built, too :-)).

And for a price close to the SB3??
In germany actually it's 36% less, but that was not the point.

I could see adding a USB connection to the Boom (which does have a line
in) as it is designed as a portable all-in-one device. But for any
dedicated box like the SB3 I think it is unnecessary as your server must
be close by so just add that USB device to the server computer.
Server ? I don't use any dedicated server. And I don't want one at the
moment. Very rarely I use my Notebook with SC. A simple slim 2,5 USB
hard drive is the only thing I would buy for audio purposes when going
for FLAC ripping my CD albums for better audio quality. And this low
noise drive can be very close to my hifi equipment I think.

I'd rather SD spend time coming up with a USB Quick Scan module within
SC7 with a separate USB menu item for quick Plug Play USB usage on
 their current hardware offerings.:)

Sounds good - *as a begin :-)*
But why to limit USB to the boom only ?

Yes. Thanks. I did more research and saw that the Boom requires an
external system with 256MB RAM, ethernet or wireless network, and 100MB
hard disk space (for SC).

But I read about an optimized SqueezeCenter on the forum that can run
on the Linux Wall Wart(s), without fans, etc. If it could be optimized
to have a one-box player with SC that can get files from USB, Firewire
or wireless, that would be great. I realize price-point is an issue,
but I'd buy a SC player to have the portability of my music -- to my
office, my friends house, a vacation weekend, or the car (maybe not yet
a flying car). See Aubuti's earlier comment and link to the related
thread about everyone having external hard drive(s) of our music (as a
backup)in our moutain house or our office.

That would depend on your use. If you want an SB3 on your bedside
table then yeah, that's a lot of wasted space. My SB3 is floating as
it were in my AV rack, not even taking up rack shelf space. Simple
heavy gage wire mounted on the back of the AV rack acting as an arm
holding up the SB3. All wires (ethernet, optical, power, support wire)
are completely hidden inside a black sleeve which shows as the arm.

Can't do that with a 19 box. :)

My point was, far better functionality, far more supported codecs and
services, in a small enough box that doesn't even require shelf space.

You do, indeed, get what you pay for. :)

 1) I would like a version of either the Classic or Boom that allows
 external speakers.
Could you clarify? The Classic has the RCA outs, which many people
already use to connect directly to active speakers, with AudioEngines
being some of the most popular. And I imagine some use the digital outs
to feed active speakers with digital inputs. The Boom has a line out
that can also be connected to active speakers or an amp/receiver. What
different kind of feature did you have in mind?

Sorry, what I meant was non-powered speakers - the reasons being one
less device (amp), one less thing to power, and volume being integrated
through the Squeezebox. Basically (and its been talked about on this
forum before) - an integrated amp in the thing.

The weather-proof one would be great in the garden (to match my
non-powered) outdoor speakers. :-)

Well, there has to be an amp somewhere. :)

Volume *is* controlled through the SB, if you choose to do so. Also, a
third party did do a SB with integrated amp (it's in the forums here
somewhere). But I really think keeping them as separates allows for far
more flexibility and better mix match options. By the time you make
the all in one solution you will be looking at Sonos level prices, so
then just buy a Sonos system.:)

Thanks for the clarification. You mean something 'like this'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54571) or 'this'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62669)? You're right, it
has been talked about before. Why not join the ongoing what I'd like to
see next thread here:

Frankly, neither this nor an all-weather SB hold much appeal for me.
I'd put a higher priority on fixing existing bugs, as well as further
partnerships with music service providers. As for new products,
something with a touchscreen interface might be nice.
