My Touch is a year and a half old and hasn't had any issues.

I have a transporter, 2 booms, SB3, duet, two controllers, 3 TOUCH
players, and two radios. One boom and the transporter are maybe 4 years
old. I've had only one hardware issue with all the units over the time
I've owned (and they are all used daily except SB3 and duet receiver
that are in the closet, replaced with TOUCH units). My issue was that
the screen in one of the TOUCH units has a horizontal white line across
the display that wouldn't go away. Logitech replaced with no questions
asked.

I've had more hardware issues with CableTV converter boxes, washing
machines, routers, and laptop computers than I've ever had with SB
player hardware.

[slim] Touch reliability

2011-08-13 Thread Zolee

Dear Squeezers,

This is my first post here...

My SB3 classic just died last week (RIP) and now I looking for a
replacement. Having read some posts on this issue here on this forum I
have some concerns regarding the reliability of these devices.
The obvious choice would be the Touch, but I wonder if theese also keep
failing in the same manner as the classic did. Mine lasted only for 2+
years.

Appreciate if you could share your experience on the Touch.

Re: [slim] Touch reliability

2011-08-13 Thread aubuti

Too bad to hear about your SB3. That is definitely shorter than the
average lifespan for that device. Are you sure it's dead? Sometimes
something as simple as a loose wifi card can make it appear dead, but
really it is easily fixed.

I've had a Touch for over two years (courtesy of the hardware beta
program) and it has been perfectly reliable. I do _not_ use the
built-in Squeezebox Server (aka TinySC or TinySBS). Rather I use an
external SBS on a small pc. Most (though by no means all) of the
reliability problems that others have reported with the Touch have to
do with TinySBS. If you're looking for a replacement for the SB3, then
I would say the Touch is a good way to go. But first make sure you
can't repair the SB3.

Re: [slim] Touch reliability

2011-08-13 Thread Zolee

Yes, it's absolutely dead and it's not an adapter issue. I have measured
the voltages - both the adapter's 5V and the internal ones -, but it's
all there. Removed the Wifi card, but no signs of life anymore. It came
back a few times before and played music for about 30 sec, but then the
display and sound switched off and it wouldn't even start. No light on
the Toslink eighter.
Thanks for helping, though !

Re: [slim] Touch reliability

2011-08-13 Thread Mnyb

touch is good as a replacement for SB3 soundvise it is better and wifi
range is better, and native 24/96 capacity.

but if you are in to advanced tweaks of the display modes you find the
Touch less flexible and customizeable ( there are some apps )
Visability is not so good from a distance as an SB3.

For my needs it's a nice player . and I'm happy with it.

Don't be scared by the duet, Touch is roled in to one device and thus a
breeze to setup and the UI is fast and responsive with this faster cpu
.

but don't expect much if it's standalone player function ( no server )
it's a frebie that may work but don't depend on it, I have to much music
and use to much plugins and I do like the web-UI so it's not for me.

Plugins are not important for me as I mainly use it to play my files,
however the display is an issue. A controller would be handy, but I
will use my android phone as a remote. Thanks.

Re: [slim] Touch reliability

2011-08-13 Thread Mnyb

I usually end up using the album cover now playing display for ir remote
or the clock and do all my controlling with my iPad .

A nice touch is that is uses a more crowded style with more buttons
info and smaller letters when using the Touch interface, when you use
the ir-remote it reverts to bigger letters with less info and no
buttons (untill you touch it again) But it does not have a size button
where you could magnify the letters in several sizes as an SB3 can.

Re: [slim] Touch reliability

2011-08-13 Thread yeomanspc

Agree with other posts - the Touch is a good replacement for the SB3.
The receivers are ok if you really don't want to see what's playing,
but the Duet controller is hard work.

On your SB3, I note that you say you checked the voltage but very often
the voltage is ok until you start to draw current - then it drops and
you see intermittent faults. If you have another PSU that you know
works, try swapping them. Or maybe borrow one from someone else. Over
the years I've had a few SB's die - checked the voltage which was ok,
but a new PSU fixed it.

That happend to my Slingbox PSU.
Without load the voltage would be ok; with load the PSU could not
deliver.

BTW it might also be a challenge to find a Duet as it is EOL. But might
still be poible.
