Re: [slim] Can a power supply/DAC be causing interference?

It isn't likely to do physical damage to other electronics unless it is acting like a strong magnet, in which case it could damage a TV tube. Mentally, having to reset the kit every 5 minutes would be really damaging. Could it also be affecting sound quality as well? To the last question, my sense is no -- to be fair the unit sounds pretty darn good! If it is throwing out loads of RFI the answer is likely yes. I would question whether it isn't affecting its own working. Don't forget that with audio, some distortion or loudness can sound 'pretty darn good' but will eventually get on your nerves. Get another unit for evaluation and see if that behaves differently. If it doesn't, don't buy that model. -- Mick Seymour Mick Seymour's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21137 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63281 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Can a power supply/DAC be causing interference?
I have known different equipment play all sorts of havoc with other equipment. The thing to do is take the DAC out of the loop completely. Unplug it and tuck it under the sofa out of the way. Unplug and replug the SB. If it works, it is the DAC or it's power supply causing the problem. You don't say whether you are using an optical or coax connection. If coax, it -could- be picking up rubbish that is messing with the SB. Is the SB running wireless? I have also know equipment disturb wireless signals intermittently. -- Mick Seymour Mick Seymour's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21137 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63281 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Can a power supply/DAC be causing interference?
SB is running wireless, connected to DAC via digital coax and connected to amp with RCA (I'm doing some A/B tests of the SB DAC and the external DAC). I thought coax is almost always preferred over TOSlink? What's weird is that the Squeezebox seems to connect to my network fine. It's just the connection to the actual machine that hosts Squeezecenter gets hosed. I would think that if it's interfering with the wireless, the SB wouldn't even be able to get on the network at all. Not really sure how that works... -- dekaliber dekaliber's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9852 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63281 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Can a power supply/DAC be causing interference?
Squeezecenter is actually running from a computer in another room (where the router is). The laptop isn't really part of the equation, but it seems unaffected connectivity-wise regardless. Yesterday I unplugged the DAC/power supply entirely from my system -- AC power, RCA, digital coax, everything -- but the SB still had trouble connecting. However, once I unplugged the power on the Squeezebox and plugged it back in, it started working again. Not sure what the reset may have done from a hardware perspective, though. -- dekaliber dekaliber's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9852 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63281 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Can a power supply/DAC be causing interference?
Just because your SB can associate with the wireless AP doesn't mean that many packets are getting through. IMHO, the SB/SC protocols were never very robust in the face of significant packet loss. Also remember that the power supply for the new stuff might be the culprit, particularly if its an external brick. Cheap switching supplies are notorious radiators of interference. So when you unplug make sure you unplug at the outlet. -- Millwood 2 SB3, 1 Duet Debian Etch server 2 AP (netgear, linksys) wireless network. Re: [slim] Can a power supply/DAC be causing interference?
After experimenting some more I found conclusively that the VAC-1 is the guilty component. It sits above the SB3 on my TV stand, which incidentally puts it more or less in between the SB and my router. I was able to move the VAC-1 back and forth on my TV stand to get 100% repeatable results. If I move it forward so that it's in front of the SB, no problems. If I move it backwards so that it's on top of or slightly behind the SB, the remote becomes unresponsive, and the connection drops seconds later. Moving it forward again, the connection resumes instantly. I will reconnect things so that the Squeezebox is above the CI units tomorrow, which is probably the much more common and logical setup, and see what happens. I suspect it will probably be fine. The CI units are only where they are while I audition them. I have no idea if the VAC is a switching power supply -- how would I tell?
