Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!

2008-07-16 Thread 4mula1

When I originally wrote the Solaris wiki I attached some files for use
with the Service Management Facility (SMF) which are a couple of shell
scripts and XML files. Currently files with no extension and XML files
are not allowed. In the interim I just copied and pasted the contents
into the wiki page, but it's so much more convenient to just download
them.

Is there a better solution to this without hosting the files elsewhere?

Is there a reason why the wiki needs to be editable without logging in

Wouldn't it be better if we required users that want to edit the wiki

Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!

2008-05-16 Thread andynormancx

Would it be possible to forward links to the old wiki over to the new
one ?

For example, I found this link on a third party site today:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SBRFrontButtonAndLED

I should be reasonably straight forward to put a page at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi that presented the user with a
page indicating that the wiki had changed and to give them a link to:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SBRFrontButtonAndLED

(with text explaining that the link might not work)

Or alternatively just a simple Apache rewrite rule to forward onto the
new wiki ?

Some of this has been done already (by hand). In the little time I had
to research the MediaWiki site, I couldn't find any scripts / tools /
plug-ins that would automate the task.

I'm guessing it could possibly be done with one of the regex tools, but
that's out of my league. We're a bit short on the web IT side, in terms
of time, so the Kwiki camel case page titles will probably hang around
for a while longer.

Of course, if there's someone out there with experience/expertise in

I would suggest using Categories as the best way to classify this.
Page names should be descriptive on the content, not the navigation.
Navigation is best managed with category and sub-category tags.

I thought there was an earlier discussion that attachments couldn't be

The code did work for 6.5 but as it stands the page needs editing so it
is not ready for general consumption. However user would still then
have to cut paste and save an external file rather than just click
and download as before.

I'll look at the upload link and see if it can be made to work.

I guess the page name only matters if the main route for people finding
it is going to be through an alphabetical list of page names!

I'm not sure if we have a strategy for navigation yet, or a clear
structure to work with. I can see, for example, quite a lot of orphaned
pages but really don't know where they should be put: I think someone
needs to take some leadership (with consultation here, hopefully) on
this.

I think your idea of using a Category in that way is a good one (it
will help people find similar pages in the darkest corners of the
wiki!) but I don't think we should be relying on Categories as a main
navigation route.

IMHO

If someone at Logitech sees this, it would be great if the old wiki
content could be available somewhere a bit longer. It's sometimes good
to be able to look at the previous wiki page when you are correcting
the page in the MediaWiki, especially when you are correcting links
that have gone bad in the conversion.

Earlier the old wiki was available at wiki.slimdevices.com and the new
at mwiki.slimdevices.com, but sometime during the last days this
changed so both points to the new wiki. Is there some way we can get
access to the old kwiki content ?

Ah, ok, see what you've done now. I found it confusing at first as when
you click one of the category links you get taken to a page that doesn't
exist (the page for that category). I can see that being useful for
someone like you editing some pages and wanting to keep track, but you
weren't planning on leaving it like that, were you?

As a trial of the concept I've created a category for Beginners Guide
Pages with some simple content so its more user friendly.

I think I still want a link to the parent page from each child -
otherwise its two clicks to get back, which is a bit annoying.

On a separate matter, I've popped a couple of notes in discussion

there is discussion present? Which isn't making this an effective means
of provoking one! Any comments on a better way to do this would be
welcome.

Also - there is a problem on the Squeezebox page, of all places: my
comment in discussion is

Code:

The content of this page clearly relates to the specific SB1 model ... yet
there are dozens of pages
that link to Squeezebox meaning the whole family of players. I suggest that
this content be
moved to a new SB1 page and that some new content be created here. Any
objections?

I did really mean parent, yes. There is a certain amount of inline
navigation amongst the various pages, and being able to go up a level
seems like a good idea. For the moment I've just added a fixed link at
the top of each page, until someone has a better idea.

Thanks also for the pointer on discussion pages. I guess all we need

You can see how it looks like for example at the bottom of the

It seems to me that it would at least be a good idea to have a category

Just add the categories the page shall belong to as the following text
somewhere on the page, in the sample page I linked to you can see them
at the top of the page as the following code:

Code:

How would you like to handle information for SS 6.x? There is a lot of

Let's leave it, but clearly identify that the content is for SlimServer

I can see the option to delete a page, but maybe Matt gave me special
rights. Why don't you just orphan the page(s) in question and add some
text that says you want this page deleted... I can find them and clean
them out later.

When I get a chance, I'll coordinate with Matt W. and learn about the
different rights levels. I see no reason we can't give the regular

Don't think wikiradio has been worked out yet... At present you can't
upload anything other than image files the wiki so we can't host opml

I would like to think we can have a wiki like interface for submitting
radio station links but it would be preferable if Logitech hosted a

I'm guessing that Squeezebox is some magic token for the wiki name,
as I see it popup in various places where it seems strange, e.g. (from

2008-04-16 Thread radish

One thing I just noticed doing the hardware overview is that some of the
product specific pages have pretty long names. For example, hotlinking
the word Squeezebox is going to be a pretty common requirement - but
it needs this mouthful :

Code:

 Everyone loves a Squeezebox

Any way we can make that a little easier? I'm assuming the reason
SqueezeBox was used so much in the old wiki was due to auto-linking of
camel case words.

Also - would be good to make the formatting help link go somewhere
(even if it's just
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page :)

Whats the best way of adding navigation links amongst a group of pages

In the old wiki there was the (admittedly very crude) list of backlinks
on the left, which made it easy to get back to parent or related
pages.

Is there a way of adding navigation links on the left, locally to a
page? Or is there a recommended style for adding navigation links at,
say, the top of a page?

I'll see if we can turn on subpages... I think that's the best way (it
essentially creates a breadcrumb trail of links on the page). I'll
also bug BKlaas to see if he has a better method since he was once,
long ago, a wiki admin (along with a bunch of other IT stuff) using
MediaWiki.

If anyone else knows a better way, speak NOW so we don't have to go
backward too much if we implement it the wrong way.

Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!

2008-04-15 Thread JJZolx

Jim, is there any way to break apart the run-on words used in the
previous wiki? Things like:

RunningMultipleSlimServers
.../index.php/RunningMultipleSlimServers

Some kind of global search and replace (a lot of them, needless to
say)? Looking at Wikipedia, I gather that this url, if spaces were
present, would be

.../index.php/Running_Multiple_Slim_Servers

It might be a good idea to set up a robots.txt file to keep search
engine spyders out of the wiki for a little while, particularly if page
URLs will be change or reorganized significantly.

Hi Jim:

Brandon suggest that the move command could be used to create the
separated URLs, but that leaves a permanent link around. BKlaas used
to be a media wiki admin, so I'll see if he has any input on making
that change on a global basis without leaving a lot of links behind.

Good suggestion on the robots.txt file. I don't have right to create
it, but I'll get someone on that right away.

Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!

2008-04-15 Thread erland

I've updated the plugin pages due to two isses:

1.
mailto links looked like this:
[Firstname Lastname mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

While they need to look like this in MediaWiki:
[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Firstname Lastname]

I've changed this in the plugin pages, but there might be other
places.

2.
Some external links wasn't converted correctly, especially when there
was several external links in the same sentence.

They looked something like this:
[userfriendly link name http://example.com]
Or like this:
some other text [userfriendly name
of last link http://example.com/lastlink.html]userfriendly name of
first link.

The result is that urls are shown directly in the page instead of
showing the user friendly name of the link.

This has been converted in the plugin pages to:
userfriendly link name
And:
userfriendly name of first link
some other text [http://example.com/lastlink.html userfriendly name of
last link].

I've only corrected these issues in the plugin pages, but there might
be other places so I thought I'd post them here so others could look
out for the same problems in other pages.
