Sorry for the low res, but the youtube police cut the sound on the Hi

Re: [slim] Should I buy a Transporter?

2012-01-23 Thread Soulkeeper

You can use the Touch as a transport, while keeping your Classic for the
display. Simply set up the Classic to control the Touch (if possible,
and if that's not possible, sync it with the Touch).

So the music will come from the Touch, while the Classic will display
what's playing just like it always has.

I'm very tempted to purchase it.
The AVR I'm using is a Yamaha RX-A3010. I have my Squeezebox classic
(v3) hooked up to it via the coaxial output.

 Please excuse this naive question:
Am I gaining anything (other than looks and a better power supply) by
upgrading to a transporter. As I understand it, the main advantage of
the transporter is the DAC. If my receiver does not have balanced
audio input, and, instead I used the optical or coaxial outputs, I
would bypass the DAC and not get any of the sound enhancements of the
 Transporter. Am I correct?

I really like the look of the Transporter, but if I don't gain any
advantage in sound quality, then I guess purchasing one is foolish.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I like my transporter. But if you are not using the DAC, I wouldn't
purchase. Get a touch instead.

You don't need balanced input on the Yamaha in order to take advantage
of the DAC in the Transporter. It also has a normal pair of analog RCA
connectors.

Does the Yamaha receiver have analog in that truly bypasses the Yamaha
DAC (vs converting analog in to digital then running through the Yamaha
DAC?

i think this functions is getting very unusual these days even in top
of line recievers , recievers are meant to feed digital signals , the
analog in is for legacy stuff vcr and tape decks .

A read many reciever manuals, a decade ago analog bypass was mentioned,
but today there are for example pure direct modes, but no real
explanation to what it is and manuals are very vague on the subject I
think deliberatly vague.

And almost everything is in the dsp, so if you use the sub for music ,
digital input is what you should use even if you had analog bypass , if
you used some room eq function likevise.

I have an original Transporter in my main system and a SB3 in my bedroom

an amp) first. I had tried a few AVRs but decided to go with analog amp
approach.

BTW, what is the difference between the new Transporter SE and the
original Transporter?

The spwcial transnav knob is missing in the SE, they apearentkymhad a
lot of parts but no knobs, so they decided to clear it out but at a
lower price.
And you can only get one innthe us afaik.

Re: [slim] Should I buy a Transporter?

2012-01-22 Thread Recoveryone

I pick one up a few months ago, and really needed to sale it (due to a
car problems), but since that issue has been dwelt with. I have been
very happy with the Transporter. I have mine connected toslink to my
Pioneer Elite VSX 81TX and I can tell the difference when playing MP3's
rip at 320Kps or WAV files that are coverted into Flac @ 700Kbs. The
enhancements may be small but noticable. I have 3 other classic's and
have had them connected analog and digital and there is a big
difference with the Classic, digital sounds much better IMHO.

I thought about a Touch, but honestly, I really like the display on the
Classic and Transporter. I can read the display from across the room
and when it is off, it displays the time and weather.

I've heard that the touch dispaly is problematic from a distance and
the SuperDateTime does not work very well.

Have I heard wrong?

not sure about superdatetime, but your point about display is well
taken. A lot of money for a larger display. find an SB3 on ebay or
something instead. Of all my many players, there is only ONE that I can
even see the display, and even it is not visible from my listening
position (athough the TOUCH does have a regular and large display,
and the large display I can see artist and title from 12 feet away with
no issue). and my transporter is buried in a cabinet. I do like the
visibility of ipad (running either squeezepad or ipengHD) or iphone
with ipeng, or squeezeplay on my laptop.

edit: I lied. I have booms at bedside at two locations. So I can easily
see those of course

SuperDateTime works fine with the Touch as long as you use it with
Custom Clock.

Whether you can read the Touch from across the room depends on (a) how
good your eyes are, and (b) how big your room is. I find that reading
the Touch is fine up to about 10 feet/3 meters, whereas the SB3/Classic
is good up to around 15 feet/5m.
