Re: [SH-Discuss] Issues at new space Large and Small

Yeah, like Omar said, I stopped in at the new space once and it felt warm
and that was with the thermostat all the down at 50 :)

Devin might have some cement/motar stuff that you can use to seal those
cracks.

Good catch Justin! I can see why those would be hard to spot.

I know there was some talk about having a programmable thermostat but
realistically, keyholders come in and out at all random times and sometimes
the open hours don't happen exactly on time or the person has a sudden
thing come up so that would leak money at times too. Once we're settled in,
a solution may be to tie the temperature setting to opening and closing the
space so when you click on "open space" thermostat is set to X degrees.
Click close space, it goes back down to X degrees

What I believe Martin was saying, is that everyone of the homeless
carries a box cutter, not that haxors should carry one.

I don't suggest bringing a knife to a gun fight. Now that is part joke and
mostly accurate. Guns are for self defense and knives in the eye of the law are
offensive in nature. That is why if you are going to prepare for situation like
defending your life have the right tool for the job. Besides being a more legal
defense tool, it is also easier to be proficient with. Knife fighting takes
great skill and anyone that has come out the other end of our rehabilitation
system can disarm a knife easier than you can use it to hurt them. I would
not fear the homeless. I fear the drug addict crashing from a binge that is
desperate to score and sees a business that is open late and thinks there might
be some cash on hand. There was some talk about a ccw class. I have a friend
that is a NRA instructor. We are both passionate about arming law abiding
citizens and being capable of defending life and liberty. Please let me know if
this is still an interest and I will make it happen.

That said, if you have to fight, fight with whatever you can. Better yet as
previously mentioned be aware. If someone you don't know or you don't like the
looks of comes in, make a phone call to a friend and be on the phone. Put
yourself on the other side of a table or something else to put space between
you and that other person. Keep the door locked at night and get visual
confirmation before you let them in.

Please be safe and let me know if you are interested in packing a piece. Peace.

However, it generally appears to be homeless individuals walking a "daily

Not anymore :)

I didn't change the flyer, because that was made for our opening day at
21. We'll rewrite the flyer for opening day when we're ready to print
that.

If you don't mind doing it during the day, there are a lot of locations around
downtown that are always packed:

* First Energy plaza
* Lock 3
* Quaker Square
* UA campus
* Corner of Main and Exchange

I'd bet you could even ask some of the local hookah bars if you can sell a few
things there.

I realize that pdf might not be a usable format, so let me know what you'd
like it in.

I also see that all of our documents still say 21 W. North :D

plan for the fundraiser .

I am taking the reigns in the fashion of do-ocracy and am asking for

Re: [SH-Discuss] Kitchen Oven and Stove

2014-01-22 Thread Omar Rassi
perhaps, I'll have to find out if anyone is going to be there this weekend.
The fridge is also in a restricted area so whoever comes with me will have
to wait outside until I can bring out to the loading door. While I'm there
for my interview tomorrow I'll ask about someone being available on
Saturday to open the area where the fridge is. If the plan is to pick it up
on Saturday, we must arrive no later than the appointed time, I would like
not to upset my superiors by coming late on their day off, especially since
our evaluation reports are currently being written.

Re: [SH-Discuss] Issues at new space Large and Small

2014-01-22 Thread Omar Rassi
Lets remember that this is by far a vast improvement to 21 W. North St.
where you'd arrive during the winter and its 35 degrees inside the space
and it would take the Perkins room hours to get to 60 degrees. The
thermostat could keep the new space at a low enough temp to save money when
no one is there but not low enough to be unbearable when you arrive,
opening the space sets the temp to where our patrons will be warm and
comfortable and then back down again when its closed. This is of course
after we've patched all the places where we're losing tremendous amounts of
heat. We also need to switch our gas utility bill to a budgeted plan where
we pay the amount all year round to avoid HUGE winter usage bills.

 Hey folks,

I stopped in the new space to drop a few things off and I decided I
would check a few repairs out.

First, The work that has been completed looks awesome. It is really
coming together. The team that preformed the move really got a lot done.
Not enough thanks can be given to the people who have taken a blight on
Summit St. and made it into a functional space.

Unfortunately I see a few issues (that may or may not be know to all)

 1. The space is heated but it seemed warm. This is cool when hacking is
happening BUT expensive when it is not. We MUST work a plan together to
deal with lowering the heat when the space is not occupied. (I did not know
where the thermostat was to turn it down so I did not make any actions for
 this.)

 2. Above the back 40's heater is a GIANT HOLE. It appears to be a vent
hole and may already have a plan to be resolved BUT at the current moment $
is flowing out the space. As the heater runs heat flows out and to the
ceiling and right next to the heater vent is this 8-12 inch hole. This must
 be fixed ASAP.

 3. The front garage door has large leaks of air. Replacement of the
door would be a more expensive project but buying weather trim and putting
up a plastic door (similar to the common space-back 40) would help
 considerably.)

 4. There are numerous holes in the mortar that need filled.

When I was in the space previously I didn't see many of these issues as
it was dark outside but in the light of day they become VERY clear.

I have an album of pictures in an album I hope these help to clear
 things up.

I understand we have a truck available for this weekend. Can we use it for

Re: [SH-Discuss] Issues at new space Large and Small

2014-01-22 Thread Justin Herman
IMO heat being 50 is perfectly fine for working. If I am working on
something less physical I might opt to turn on a space heater and heat my
small area more. I know other would prefer warmer temps and that is fine.

A programmable thermostat set to run from 4 till 8 is SO much better than
running it all the time.

The thing is as we build membership we WILL be running the heater more.
Unfortunately we are heating empty spaces 16 hours a day.

2014-01-22 Thread Byron Moran
The idea of a programmable thermostat is that it warms it up for you before
you arrive. Tying it into the open / closed sign is the equivalent of
buying a remote start for your car and turning it on as soon as you get in
the car. It's 15 degrees out, and it would be really frustrating to have to
wait an hour every time you come in the space for it to be a reasonable
temperature. I understand saving money, and something like a Nest will do
that, but you have to expect some costs as far as heating, and be a ble to
budget enough to keep your patrons warm and comfortable. Just an outside
opinion.

A lot of programmable thermostats offer temporary adjustments. IE: give
heat to 68 for a few hours then go back to program 50.

I think I might have one I can bring in. Ill need to find it though.

I don't have any metals pieces to donate right now, but I am more than willing
to make some jewelry pieces to donate! I'll need to be able to set up my
chemical picke to clean the metal before I solder it, but once I'm able to do
that I can start working on pieces. (I haven't been to the new space yet, so I
don't know how soon I would be able to start working there. I just need an
outlet for a small crockpot and the butane torch...ideally the drillpress as
well, but if that won't be ready for a while I can work around that.) I realize
that it was mentioned to happen a few months down the road, so there isn't an
immediate rush. I'm just excited to make things!

As a somewhat related note, I have been considering buying myself more sterling
silver to work with, which would increase the potential value of any donated
jewelry. I order from Riogande.com, but shipping can be expensive. If anyone
else wants to work on small jewelry/metalwork and needs materials, let me know
and we can organize a combined order and split shipping! (I can also advise on
materials if anyone has questions.) ...should I also send that note as its own
topic to try to increase the number of people who see it and to prevent this
from going off topic? (Or I can just bring it up at the next meeting. I wasn't
able to attend the last one.)

[SH-Discuss] Issues at new space Large and Small

2014-01-22 Thread Justin Herman
Hey folks,

I stopped in the new space to drop a few things off and I decided I would
check a few repairs out.

First, The work that has been completed looks awesome. It is really coming
together. The team that preformed the move really got a lot done. Not
enough thanks can be given to the people who have taken a blight on Summit
St. and made it into a functional space.

It appears to be a vent hole
and may already have a plan to be resolved BUT at the current moment $ is
flowing out the space. As the heater runs heat flows out and to the ceiling
and right next to the heater vent is this 8-12 inch hole. This must be
fixed ASAP.

3. The front garage door has large leaks of air. Replacement of the door
would be a more expensive project but buying weather trim and putting up a
plastic door (similar to the common space-back 40) would help considerably.)

4. There are numerous holes in the mortar that need filled.

When I was in the space previously I didn't see many of these issues as it
was dark outside but in the light of day they become VERY clear.

I have an album of pictures in an album I hope these help to clear things
up.

I could probably donate some jewelry I have made. You should add Davinci's
Pizza to the list and I will personally talk with the owner to see if she
can do anything. -Beth

Some organizations who are some of the above are often elliglble for

Oh my gosh you should do something similar to junk yard wars. That would be
a riot.

For all who have never seen the show, two teams (you can do many more) were
let loose in a junkyard with an objective. Some sort of obstacle course
awaited them and they had to build a machine to complete that course.

Rubber city clothing, Angel Falls, Rockne's, The Market Path, Rubber city
Harley Davidson, Revival, Lake cinema's, highland theatre, Miller South
school and Firestone High School (possibly season tickets to their
theatrical performances), EJ Thomas, Bricco or pub Bricco, Legend Vapor,
Acme, Giant Eagle, Donn Drumm, Hopkin Gardens, White house chicken, Akron

the local businesses. The sample is addressed to the owner of Regina's
Pizza but can be changed to send to anyone again this is just a 15 min
draft written while also trying to control a crazy toddler so if there are

2014-01-22 Thread Becca Salchak
What can we sell at a silent auction ? we are a fracking maker space!!
there are tons of possiabilities for what we could sell. I started writing
out plans for a silent auction last night after talking with Andy. This
isn't an instant solution but it is defiantly one we can do a couple months
down the road. examples of what could be sold are (these are all
hypothetical these rant actual required donations) :
- I could donate a skirt that i made ... Probably a star wars one because
people seem to love it (valued at $40)
-Beth could donate a necklace and ear ring set
-Nicole could donate one of her metal pieces
-Matt Smallwood and Steve IV could donate a free consultation plus a coupon
for $100 of a service from Brewbeck IT services
-using the magical interwebs i could print out a few cookie cutters on the
3d printer and make a baking gift basket that probably would in the end
cost me no more then $10.
-Torrie if she so desired could donate a tiny robot or something
- G could offer a picnic and boat ride out on the lakes which would just
cost him the picnic supplies gas and a few hours out on his own boat ( my
grandmother has a pontoon and auctions the same thing off at the African
Sky silent auction every year)
-Omar could put together a laptop that has been donated that would be good
enough to play video games on it load a copy of portal on to it and put
portal related items into a basket and auction off that.
- Matt Smallwood could auction of a curry dinner for 6 at the winners house
where he goes to their house one night and prepares and serves dinner. ( my
father use to auction off a pasta dinner for the knights of Columbus every
year)
- Devin could put together a paintball basket with a $5 gift card to a
paint ball range,a small thing of amunition, a few monster and a camo hat.
( all this stuff we could probably get as a donation from location)
-we could contact local art students from U of A, Firestone and Miller
South or professional artists like PR Miller and Don Drumm and ask them to
donate works of art .
again these are just ideas not one person has to donate exactly what i said
just brainstorming ideas to get those cogs turning.

This is not an instant fundraiser it would take at least 2 months to plan
and launch. the most expensive part we face is location, food, and drink
we could have it at the space if we can hold off on loud hacking for a
night and make the space presentable.
food we can either have members make food or we can buy a frack ton of
stuff from GFS like meatballs , egg rolls, little smokies
we also need to serve booze we don't need a full bar but we need an open
bar and two nicely dressed hackers to hand out the beer and wine. I was
thinking we could go totally local and get maybe donations or discounts
from the hopping frog, the thirsty dog ,the Ohio brewing company, and
wineries like the red horse which is in Barberton and the winery at wolf
creek also in Barberton. The booze is key because we need attendees loose
with there money. So that if we can't get donations may be our biggest
expense
So that is my idea in a nut shell there you go
Have at it

== Discussion Items ==

* Wall tearout discussion
** Recap: Blue room ( front half) somesort of office or room or closet or
something. Has closet space, cabinets, two outlets, HVAC vent, light. There are
also previously another wall that is now gone. Torrie tore down the wall that
isn't there anymore. Torrie talked about lots of work that was being done or
was done. Everything she worked on was cleaned up as she worked. Threw some
stuff out, saved some stuff. Took a break after a day or two of work. Talked
many times about wanting to take the wall down and put a welcome bar there.
She started taking trim out, it became an issue, unexcellence occurred.
** Omar: I started the discussion. Some people are for, some are against.
Major change to the space. People need to speak up if they have an opinion one
way or the other on the subject. Do-ocracy is wonderful, we've gotten lots of
stuff out of it, but we need togive the membersip a chance to decide if we want
someting togetjer as a hackerspace.
** Torrie: This is her interpretation of do-ocracy. She talked about it,
people didn't seem terribly interested. So she tore into the wall. She is
accepting full responsibility for the project. If she starts the project, she
will finish it. Discussion about whether to put an office or welcome bar. If
someone wanted to turn it into an office, server closet, etc, then start doing
something, even put a do not hack sticker on the room.
** Devin shows where the wall in question is.
** Becca: She liked the closet.

Hmm, we have Devin's "GREAT STUFF" art sculpture.

Omar's link gave me an idea, instead of a Walk-a-Thon we can have a
Build-A-Thon

Participants get to keep their creations, winner gets some sort of prize,
And we get rid of the junk pile :)

What would we sell at the silent auction?

We would need to partner with nearby businesses to donate items for
auction, Walk-a-thon.

I'm using it as encouragement to build SYNHAK in a direction where it can buy
the building.

[SH-Discuss] SynHak Renovations Fundraiser

2014-01-22 Thread Andrew Buczko
Would it be possible to do a fundraiser to help with SynHak's renovation
expenses?

I asked like two members about the idea and they seemed to like it. One
suggested a Silent Auction.

If you have a suggestion for a fundraiser please post it in a reply to this
email (for now) and then we can go over the suggestions at the next meeting.

Plus this would be another opportunity to bring new faces to the space.
