Just to clarify, I think that you are referring to Chapter 4 Forms. 
Between Figures 16 and 17 (page 23 in the chapter file), there is a list 
item entitled "Events tab". At the end of that item is the text "List 
box", which should be a heading on a new line, with the Heading 3 style.


Exactly. I have seen this while there was a post for Listboxes in 
ask.libreoffice and couldn't find this header, special in online version 
of Base Guide 7.2.

looking or the chapter "List Box" (Forms → Form Properties → Properties 
of controls → List Box).
Content is there, but header appers at the end of chapter "Formatted 
field" in Base Guide 7.2. So it won't appear as separate entry.

Hope it will be corrected in Base Guide 7.3

which is marked as duplicate of a bug I have reported in 2014. And for 
an enhancement request you need a developer, who is interested. 
Formatting for a query has never been saved since Base exists.

1. Numbers are not aligned right by default eg

You could report a bug/enhancement request for this. If I create a table 
the alignment will be set to horizontal alignment "default". But 
"default" will never be saved. It will be "left" instead. Could be it is 
planned but not implemented yet.



2. Maybe it's because numbers are converted to strings to display eg

No, test it with a new table. You could see every content is aligned 
left in the table.


I don't understand why different quote treatments are required for numbers
here:
Step 4 1) Type >0 in the Criterion cell under FuelID in the query table.
Step 8 4) Type > '0' in the Criterion cell.


If I test it with LO 7.3.0.3 there are no quotes around numbers in the 
GUI. If I try to set quotes here it give a warning:

The entered criterion cannot be compared with this field.

I could only set quotes in SQL view but it will end with an error if I 
set it back to design view.


The quotes in the example are wrong for the GUI of Base and LO 7.3.0.3

It seems also the screenshots were made with different county format. 
There is a decimal separator '.' for $ and a decimal separator ',' for 
all other decimals.

connected with direct drivers to Base. Sqlite is a database, which could

I haven't created anything of the "Getting started with Base" and don't 
know anything about the database Automobile.odb. (Never had a car here, 
ride a bike for short distances and go by train for long distances.)



3. Re the 22 databases. Are you suggesting the base guide should work
towards a single database to demonstrate Base functionality rather than
many databases (say like northwind.mdb)?


First there has been the "Media.odb" for the whole content. But the 
content couldn't touch all problems. So there are special databases, for 
example, for creating charts in a form, for saving data like arrays in 
the internal HSQLDB …



4. Duplicating a database with the exception of macros so users aren't
exposed to macros seems crazy. Rather than having two identical
databases with the exception of macros, perhaps just merge a macro file
into the database?


No, the first database a user creates won't contain any macros. So I 
created "Media_without_Macros.odb" first. This database will work and 
show all the possibilities given without needing any special code except 
SQL.


Macros are an addon for any database. So I have looked for those parts 
in the first created database, which would make it easier to work with 
the database. The forms, for example would be created in a different 
way. In one form there are many Listboxes for adding content to 
different tables. The same form in "Media_with_Macros.odb" will create 
the content for other tables by filling it in the "Listboxes" (Combobox 
with macro → looks for content in the table and inserts primarykey).


None of this should hold you back from rewriting the content. The Geman 
Base Handbuch isn't the same as the Base Guide for many versions. But if 
there is anybody who will create new database many content must be 
changed in the Englisch Base Guide.

I've checked Base Guide 7.2 and the Automobile.odb database is not used.


Automobile.odb isn't an example database for the Base Guide. It is used 
for Base chapter in Getting Started Guide.


There are many other databases for the Base Guide. 
Media_without_Macros.odb" and "Media_with_Macros.odb" are the central 
databases, which will show a real working database for libraries. And 
all the other little examples I have created for little special 
problems. So everybody could read about the code in the Guide and could 
test it in the database.
The current German version of Base Handbuch 7.2 is published together 
with 22 Database …


… but: The English version will never be translated from the German 
version again. The first English version has been created this way, 
because the German version still exists.

I have a comment on Chapter 2, Creating a Database:
In the part on PostgreSQL some instructions is written to use PostgreSQL 
in Linux/OpenSUSE. As the majority of LibreOffice users are using 
Windows, should be there an instruction aimed at Windows users?


Reason here: I am the author of most content of the original Base 
Handbuch (Germany). And I'm using OpenSUSE since 20 years. Couldn't test 
anything in Windows.


Throughout the Guide Linux is used... (also in the figures). all manuals 
have Windows based figures, why not use windows figured here as well?


Same reason as above. We had discussions here about screenshots and 
decided to create all screenshots in Linux with a special theme. We 
won't show the behavior of open source software with screenshots of 
closed source software. Could also be a special problems with the right 
to use this screenshots in a published book.

Have a look at the chapter "Tabellen"→"Direkte Eingabe von SQL-Befehlen"
of "Base Handbuch 7.2"
(https://de.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/). I have integrated
the difference of HSQLDB and Firebird for every SQL-code written there.
I marked all with green colored "HSQLDB", which will work with HSQLDB
and all with green colored "FIREBIRD", which will work in Firebird. Also
the parts, which won't work, were marked red colored and cancelled.

There is another chapter "Abfragen"→"Abfrageerweiterungen im SQL-Modus"
which will show many of this differences between HSQLDB and Firebird..

The English guide will ha a chapter "Appendix B", which won't appear
here. It has been integrated by me in "Appendix A". There is the same
structure for Functions and data types. I marked it the same with
"HSQLDB" and "Firebird".

I haven't removed much content to the Base Handbuch. I only added new
content. So the structure of the Base Handbuch will be the same as the
structure of the Base Guide. One new chapter I have seen directly was
the chapter about SQLite - 1 page - in chapter "Datenbanken erstellen".
There are many more chapters like the chapter about charts in forms or
gridcontrols in dialogs. But all this isn't essential for showing the
difference between Firebird and HSQLDB.

Hi Steve,

creating a new internal Firebird database has been set to experimental.
Using the created Firebird database isn't experimental. So there are
many people, who had created such a database (thinking HSQLDB will be
deprecated) and won't notice any difference to versions before LO 6.4.3.

We need a description of Firebird for this people, but having a look at
the English Guide there is not much description for Firebird. Only an
Appendix B, which shows the difference betwenn HSQLDB and Firebird.
German "Base Handbuch" contains many more descrition about Firebird, but
another translation form German to English won't be a good idea.

Hi Steve,

there has nothing been changed in Base in LO 7.*. Only thing which
should be part of the description: Since LO 6.4.3 Firebird has been set
back to experimental feartures. So you could only create a new Firebird
dabase when "experimental features" are choosen.

Don't know the whole content of the Guide but could be the feature "Auto
Grow" in reports, introduced since LO 6.4, is also missing.

You have to use a special template for landscape - like LaTeX does. But
be careful. All following pages will be landscape. You have to end this
with a hard pagebreak, where you define portrait (or your default
template) as the new template.

Could be it is the same. In the German version there is a folder
"Serienbrief" and I translated it to form letter. Seems somebody else
changed it (in the guide) to "mailmerge" but didn't reflect the name of
the database has also to be changed.

warning for making screenshots of Base-forms:
If you open Base-forms for editing, not for input data, you are asked if
you wan't to save the changes you made. You haven't made changes, but
this has been the default since the beginning of LO/OpenOffice. Don't
save forms with LO 7.0. You couldn't open this forms again!

I'm not the expert with this links. Don't know where to search for it,

Wizard had been set to experimental a little bit earlier, but there are
so much (little) bugs, which make it easier to work with HSQLDB than
with Firebird. And the bugs arent solved for about a year ...

You have to turn experimental mode on since LO 6.4.3.2 for creating a
new Firebird database.

I made all the screenshots for the German original and had a look at
your screenshots. Only one hint: be careful with zooming forms.

BG01_3_TheLoanForm.png shows a navigationbar. The Icons on the
navigationbar won't zoom with the zoom of the form, so they aren't shown
completely.

So give a hint for the buggy behavior. In the Handbuch there are tables
called HINWEIS. I would prefer to write down the buggy behavior there.

For example another buggy behavior, which appeared and disappeared in
LO-Versions (and in AOO): Report-Builder could show charts, but there
have been versions, where no charts could be shown. So I have written a
special chapter for error sources in Report Builder. But the chapter for
charts has been there the whole time.

If you are planning to write an edition for LO 6.4.*: I would give a
hint Firebird couldn't be choosen as database since LO 6.4.3.2, if
experimental features are set to "On".

Do I understand it the right way? There is a bug, so it doesen't work in
this special version. And now the content should be written without this
feature, because it has been lost by the buggy behaviour?

If I would do this for the whole Base-Handbuch I have a lot to do. There
is more than one feature, which isn't working in LO at this moment, but
described as it has been planned to work.

I would only give a hint: There is a buggy behavior at this moment, but
could be it is working with the version you use...

Create a table in the internal HSQLDB.
Fields: "forename" and "surname" - both VARCHAR(50)
Save this table with name "table_without_pk", ignore the warning for PK
Go to Tools > SQL
INSERT INTO "table_without_pk" ("forename","surname") VALUES
('Robert','Großkopf')
... and press "Execute" (don't know the name for the button haven't time
to switch to English ...)
One row has been added.

Don't think I haven't written all this content for the Base-Handbuch and
haven't tested. If you think so put it away and write your own.

The database HSQLDB requires this primary key for every tabe - if you
will work with the table in GUI.

This is wrong. Have a look at DBase, MySQL or, very simple, have a look
at HSQLDB without using the GUI. You could create tables in this
database without using a primary key and you could also add values to
this tables. The wizard works with this feature.

Which version did you translate? The direct connetion to PostgreSQL is
part of the Base-Handbuch since LO 4.1.

The only part, which has been changed sind LO 6.2 (Last version I
uploded to de.libreoffice.org) and LO 6.4, is part of the Report
Builder. There could be added the possibility to auto-grow fields.

How do you want to get images of screenshots with 300DPI? My screen, for

were saved in *.png-format and 96dpi.

It's a good idea. I don't know anything about Access2Base. So I have

This chapter should be written by somebody who has used Access and used
macros in Access. I have never used Access, never used MSOffice, used
only StarOffice/OpenOffice/LibreOffice under Linux. So I couldn't know
what should be the reason for the extension Access2Base.

I will translate your chapter to the German Base Handbuch later.

That is one of the descriptions of OpenOffice I have used to create a
new description. It has been created in November 2006 and contains 19 pages.

The one I created expands to 40 pages, because it contains the different
possibilities to use the data, which could be entered in the form.

seems the Base-documentation will be published soon. A lot of people are
working for this.

Might be you are also interested in a description for XML Form
Documents, which could be created by LibreOffice. I have written such a
description some years ago, because I don't found a description, which
shows how to work with this part of LO. It describes how to create a XML
form document and how to get the data out of a form-document in
different ways - including using such a form together with Base ...

Don't know where to get the chapters of the Base guide you are working
on, but the original Base Handbook and the published version for LO 5.0
contains only Linux-screenshots. There are 2 resons for this screenshots:
- avoid to get trouble with copyrights (the German documentation team
decided to take all screenshots in a special Linux-GTK-design ...)
- no Windows system available for me, the author of the Base Handbuch.

I have migated many of the databases to Firebird but havent translated
these databases to English. The main problem is to migrate the queries
and the views.

But there is another discussion to set creation of Firebird back to
experimental, because there are many bugs and nobody, who has time to
fix these bugs:

I will change the content of the Base-Handbuch a little bit, because
there are many people, who have started with Firebird, which is
described as the future of LO-Base there. But there is nearly no

recommend people to change to Firebird.

isn't up to date. ODBC-connection works here without problems with
UnixODBC. The answer doesen't give a hint which system is used, so I
couldn't find such a version here.

Same problem. ODBC works as expected, better than JDBC-connection. With
ODBC-connection you could input data in queries with table-alias and
datatype serial. Using JDBC-connection the autoincremented value will

later?

sometimes ago I translated most of the content of FAQ Base into German.
Now I noticed there werde wrong answers in the FAQ. Could there has been
changed something since the first time anybody wrote the FAQ. What is
the way to upadte the FAQ?
1. Change the content in English FAQ and automatically change the
content in all other translated languages? Then I have to wait, because
my English isn't good enough for this.
2. Change content in the German FAQ and write here in this list there
has to be changed something?

Could confirm this and the answers of Drew.

Too many bugs would appear during the migration to Firebird.
Too many bugs are in a fresh created embedded Firebird database.
At this moment embedded HSQLDB works much better and wouldn't be
replaced by Firebird.

By the way: All the difference between Firebird an HSQLDB is written
down in the Base-Handbook. Every SQL-example has been tested also with
Firebird and the special Firebird-Code has been added.

sometimes ago I had translated most of the FAQ-Base to German and also
changed some content in the German FAQ.

Now there has been added some content in English to the German FAQ -
don't know why. I wanted to change this to German content, but I can't
change anything in the German content.

You could use the handbook for Base 4.0 also. There hasn't been changed
much in the program up to now. In the future the internal HSQLDB will be
replaced by the internal Firebird database.

There doesn't exist a newer description about Base at this moment,
because the handbook Base is a translation of the German Handbuch.

'||'. This connection works in both internal databases.

I will try it with examples:

SELECT "Forename", "Surname" FROM "Persons"

will show one column for the Forenames and one for the Surnames of the
table Persons. It works in HSQLDB and Firebird.

SELECT CONCAT("Forename", "Surname") AS "Name" FROM "Persons"

will show Forename and Shurename together in one column. Will be shown
like 'RobertGroßkopf' without a space. It works in HSQLDB, not in Firebird.

SELECT "Forename" + ' ' + "Surname" AS "Name" FROM "Persons"

will show 'Robert Großkopf' with a space in one column. It will work in
HSQLDB, not in Firebird.

SELECT "Forename" || ' ' || "Surname" AS "Name" FROM "Persons"

will do the same as last example. It will work in HSQLDB and Firebird.

Will see if I will get to explain most of the problems (and
workarounds), which will appear while migrating from HSQLDB to Firebird.
- Views aren't migrated
- Tablenames and columnnmes must have less than 32 characters
- Datefields, timefields and date-time-fields will be migrated with
wrong values depending on the timezone (HSQLDB-bug)
- Subforms and parameter-queries aren't working
- Some functions in queries must be migrated later by the user

Could be there are more problems while migrating. I will test all this
with the databases of the German Base-Handbuch.

Have had a look at this. It's a description how to change from internal
to external HSQLDB. Such a description is also part of the
Base-Handbook. The description of Jean-Francois will show many details
which I haven't written down in the Handbook.

One hint: Could be I don't understand the description in the right way,
but autovalue is possible in external databases. You have to set CALL
IDENTITY() for generated values in the advanced settings of the *.odb-file.

For the migration to Firebird we will need something like this:

Seems there have people decided to do this who didn't use any database
in LO. Migration has many unsolved problems and also the internal
Firebird new bugs, which doesn't exist in HSQLDB ...
And now we should inform how to migrate? I am missing arguments for this
step.
So much databases won't run well when migrating to Firebird with the
Migrating Assistant. I could inform how to migrate, but the first I
would write down: Do all this with a copy of your database and don't
wonder if you are missing views, queries won't run as expected etc. Is
this really the intention of this HowTo?

There doesn't exist an English manual for the special theme. My manuals
(Base Handbook and XML-Forms) I haven't found there and I could better
write it in my own language and hope somebody could translate it. If I
would translate it to English I'm shure it won't be readable.

Examples, which are a part of the manual, could be different for other
countries. So if somebody needs a manual for education, as I could read
in Danishkas mail, they would prefer another kind of examples ...

You must not sync with the English manual. I have made the same here in
Germany: A separate Base Handbook (just correcting for LO 6.1 at this
time) and a seperate explanation of XML-Forms.

So create your own guide and publish it. If there are people, who could
translate it to English it would be a good idea. Could be you will find
parts of your guide later in the English manual and in the manual of
other countries.

I know that there is written something, but I won't call it a usable help.
I haven't found anything there how to submit XML-data with XML-Forms.
Nothing to find about the structure of this data. The person, who asked
for help, has searched for "how to define a path where the data should
be saved". Couldn't find it. And without sending data to anywhere a
XML-Form is ... nothing.

I have written the Base-Handbook and this little documentatiuon "How to
use XML Form Documents". Have never written something for the Help
system of LO. But for this help of LO for XML-documents revision is
strongly recommanded.

[libreoffice-documentation] Documentation about XML Form Documents

sombody in German ask.libreoffice.org asked something about
XML-Form-Documents. I searched in the help and didn't found much. So I
looked in the www - but there are also not much documentations about
this topic you could start with LibreOffice trough
File > New > XML Form Document

I have had a look at GS5208 (Getting started Base for LO 5.2). There is
no specific content in the chapter which has to be changed. The only
changed content between LO 5.2 and LO 6.0 will be: Firebird 3.0 will be
the version for the internal (experimental) Database instead of 2.5. And
nothing in GS Base is written special for experimental internal Firebird
database.

The German Base-Handbook is written for LO 5.3. So many more content,

With OpenSUSE you could only mark the whole gridcontrol, not the
header of a column. See

There has been another bug before in 5.0 (moving the gridcontrol
crashed LO), which had been fixed - and after fixing the editing of a
gridcontrol is impossible.

I'm using LO 4.4.7.2 instead of any 5.0-version. It will work in this

Pressed "Print" for a screenshot.
Copied the screenshot to cache.
Inserted the screenshot with Ctrl+V to a new writer document.
Works as expected without any problem.

Have a look at Tools ? Options ? LibreOffice Writer ? View. Could be
images are excluded (not marked)?.
If this doesen't work try to reset your user-profile for LO. Don't
know which system you are using, so I can't write down where to find
the user-profile.

 This morning I happened to open a file that I'd been working on in
  Debian Wheezy, which still uses LO v.4. It opened in Writer as a 
 completely blank single page! The content was gone. Back to Crux 
 and the same file opened normally.

So you could open the file in LO 4.* and see all - and the same file
in LO 5.* and it is empty?
 
 This is the first time I have seen a backwards incompatibility 
 between two major releases of LO. Is this a known problem?
 

Never heard of such a bug. The chapters I edited I have edited in LO
4.4.4 or 4.4.5. First I tried this with LO 5.0, but the styles weren't
refresh right. So I switched back to 4.4.4 - without such a problem
you reported.

The last macros I created were directly created referring to English.
So it's faster to copy the content and better for international
understanding.

There are much problems with styles in the different chapters of the
Handbook. Persons, who translated it for LO 3.5, often didn't change
the the style from the German Handbook to the English Handbook. So all
text is red underlined. Also the styles aren't complete identical.
Mouch to do for a person who is interested in a consistent style off
all English descriptions.

Content of every chapter shows also the Copyright and Note for Mac
users. In all German chapters these headers of the same second page
of every chapter aren't shown in the content.

Nearly all queries in the handbook for version LO 3.5 were formatted
without returns. Queries should be formatted like all other coputercode
- - not like the xml-Code of an *.odt-document for example. This is a
problem of the internal query-editor of Base - it ignores all formatting
and will write the whole code in one row. For better understanding we
should format it a little bit better - see the German Handbuch.

Styles have also to be fixed. Special this chapter has much styles from
the German Handbuch, not the styles from the English version. The German
Handbuch has Styles, which begin with LibO... and have set the language
to Deutsch.

Tables and fields are not exactly named as in the example databases. I
hope I have found all wrong field- and tablenames and have fixed them ...

to be the fastes way for me to help for publishing the new

 I will add Robert's example files later, when I have had chance to
 study them in more detail and decide if they would befit from any
 minor adaptations (eg. change German terms to English) to
 accommodate an English speaking audience.
 

All examples on http://robert.familiegrosskopf.de/lo_hb_en/ are
translated - the tables have new names and new fields, the forms and
reports are changed and if there are macros inside the fiels I have
also tied to translate it.

 Robert provided zip files of the screen captures used in the
 handbook. Do you think it would be of any benefit to make these
 available on the ODF Authors website?

The screen-caputures are also screen-captures of the translated files.
So they are all in English.

Next I will do is to take chapter 2 of Handbook 3.5 (English Handbook,
published), add the new screenshots and also add the changed Text as
German text. I will upload this to the same folder and ping here if it
is ready. So everybody, who could translate better and much faster
than I, could translate the German text (Hi Hazel ...).

who couldn't write English very well ...

I will try to translate the other chapters the same way. So I could
add new content, when editing the German version, directly to the
English version.

Hope this would help to publish a newer Verion of the English Handbook
nearly at the same time than the German Handbuch.

In the beginning of documentation I have used ODF-Authors also. Must
have a look how it works.
 
 As a matter of general interest, is there any kind of review/edit 
 process used in the production of the German edition of this
 handbook, or is this something you work on alone?

The first Handbuch has been reviewed from other persons. Only a part
the content of chapter Macros for this first Handbuch has been
edited by someone else. Also the index has been created by someone
else. All other content I have written and other people have had a
look for orthography. So there was no reason to use ODF-Authors. I
have first uploaded the content to my website and with the new release
of every LO-Version I uploaded also a new version of Base-Handbuch to
the wiki and linked it to the german LO-homepage.

 My reason for asking is to see if there is a way to refine the ODF
 Authors review process to make it easier for new contributors to
 follow. Milos Sramek did not get any feedback when he raised this
 issue some time ago, but I believe it is something we need to give
 some consideration.

We could work with ODF-Autors. But for many people I am a little bit
impatient ... I want to get a new Base-Handbook in the same
release-cycle as LO. This is how the Geramn Handbuch is released.
 
 BTW I will not start laughing a your translations until my
 knowledge of German is better than your knowledge of English. Which
 means you will not hear a single giggle from me for a very very
 long time. ;)

A little bit fun while reading a book isn't wrong.
