[HCDX] A new DXpedition report from Finland
I have now published a full report from DXpedition AIH163 held in late November and early December in Arctic Lapland. As some of you already know, the highlight of the DXpedition was the coverage that the hobby has received on the BBC over Christmas. This was a result of journalist Erika Benke's interest in DXing. She visited Aihkiniemi during AIH163. [DX] Aihkiniemen uutisia: Kauden 2022-2023 varaukset ovat jaossa
FM-kesä on ohi ja AM-kausi alkaa. Maailman paras pedispaikka kutsuu taas - NYT on aika varata ensi talven pedisviikot Aihkiniemessä! Tarjolla ovat edelleen seuraavat viikot: 2022: 49, 51, 52 2023: 4, 5, 8, 13, 14 (+ ehkä myös vko 3) Nyt syyskuussa fiksaamme 60-asteisen koksin, mikä toivottavasti vähentää antennin kohinaa. Parannamme myös saunarakennuksen eristeitä ja sähköjä. Aihkiniemen varustus, vuokrahinta ja vuokrausehdot ovat samat kuin viime vuonna. Viikon vuokra on siis 800 euroa, eli jos kämpän jakaa kaksi kuuntelijaa, 400 euroa per kuuntelija. Viikko vaihtuu lauantaisin klo 13. Jos sähkö jatkaa kallistumistaan, vuokra saattaa nousta, mutta toistaiseksi kaikki alkavalle kaudelle tehtävät varaukset saa vielä 800 euroon. Kun olen vahvistanut, että haluamasi viikko on yhä tarjolla, kirjaan varauksesi, ja 200 euron (per viikko) varausmaksu tulee maksettavaksi saman tien. Pankkiyhteystiedot jaan henkilökohtaisesti. Jos emme saa varausmaksua viikon sisällä, varauksesi raukeaa ja laitan ko. viikon tai viikot uudelleen jakoon. Kun olemme saaneet varausmaksun, varaus sitoo molempia osapuolia. Karin sanakääntein: Itse asiasta toteaisin, että Aihkin kynäilijät ovat tehneet valtavasti ilmaista työtä SDXL:lle, kun ovat vaivautuneet kirjoittamaan Aihkiniemestä ja muualtakin juttuja Radiomaailmaan. Homma olisi voitu toteuttaa maksullisena freelancetyönä, jolloin siitä olisi herunut jotain myös kirjoittajille. No, en todellakaan odota kirjoituspalkkioita SDXL:ltä - mutta Aihkiniemeä koskevien juttujen leimaaminen propagandaksi ja mainokseksi kuulostaa lähinnä katkeralta kuittailulta, jonka motivaatiota ihmettelen. Mitä firmoihin tulee, niin Aihkiniemi ei ole (voittoa tavoitteleva) firma, vaan Aihkiniemeä ylläpitää Inarin radiomajan kannatusyhdistys. Aihkiniemeä on rakennettu ja paranneltu jäsenten rahoilla yli kymmenen vuoden ajan. Aivan erityisen paljon on petrattu reilun vuoden sisällä, kun kahdeksan jäsentä on sijoittanut yhteensä lähes 30,000 euroa lisää siihen, että antenneiltaan maailman paras pedispaikka toimisi entistäkin paremmin. Lisäksi jäsenet ovat tehneet tolkuttoman määrän talkootyötä Aihkiniemen ylläpitämiseksi. Ja toisin kuin muut tunnetut pedispaikat, Aihkiniemi on todellakin ollut avoin kaikille halukkaille kuuntelijoille. Aihkiniemessä on myös kokeiltu monia uusia ideoita ja materiaaleja, jotka ovat levinneet sieltä muidenkin kuuntelijoiden käyttöön. Kaikki pioneerityö on tehty niin - ja kuuntelumahdollisuus on pystytty tarjoamaan niin - ettei siihen ole kulunut euroakaan SDXL:n rahaa. Mutta huh, mikä helpotus Karille ja SDXL:n jäsenille: Kenenkään ei silti ole pakko vuokrata pedisaikaa Aihkista. Ihan kiva, että Kari tykkää kuunnella Kiwi-radioilla. [DX] AIH124-pedisraportti Aihkiniemessä
Havahduin viime viikolla siihen, että edes kaikki suomalaiset DX-kuuntelijat eivät vielä tiedä Aihkiniemen pedispaikasta. On siis korkea aika kertoa siitä lisää, koska tämä DX-paratiisi Inarijärven pohjoispuolella on ollut olemassa jo kymmenen vuotta. Parhaillaan siellä kuuntelevat Jari Lehtinen ja Seppo Pirhonen. Oma pedikseni AIH124 Jim Solatien kanssa päättyi vajaat kolme viikkoa sitten. Mikäs siellä oli kuunnellessa, kun varusteina on 14 kilsan mittaista Beverage-antennia. Olivat radiokelit hyvät tai huonot, mihin suuntaan tahansa, niin kaikkiruokaiselle keskiaaltokuuntelijalle löytyy aina uutta ja mielenkiintoista bongattavaa. Ja kunto nousee kun antennit koluaa päästä päähän. Teen pedistarinat englanniksi, koska ne kiinnostavat aika paljon sekä ulkomaalaisia DX-harrastajia että radioasemia. [HCDX] DXpedition Report from Arctic Lapland
A couple of weeks ago I returned from DXpedition AIH124 in Lapland, 400 km (250 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, up in the northernmost tip of Finland. At the "Aihkiniemi" cabin we have a total of 14 Beverage antennas, each about 1 km (3,000 feet) in length, all pointing to different directions. Jim Solatie, a fellow radioaficionado, joined me on this DXpedition. Neat catches especially from North America keep on coming now that we are reviewing recordings with fellow DXer Jim Solatie. I promise to try to get the full log published within a decade or so... ;) In addition to fervent DXing, I snapped loads of photos and videos, also with a drone. I have inserted three drone videos in the report. Just click the still image, and you get redirected to Youtube to view the videos. [DX] AIH88 DXpedition Report from Lapland now online!
The latest Aihkiniemi DXpedition report is now online! Come and see what Arctic AM DXing can be at its best. Here's a detailed journal of what we heard and did on DXpedition AIH88 in the Finnish Lapland. The Chinese do have it right, 88 is indeed a lucky number. The DXpedition began with a stunning opening to New Zealand. Several stations were heard from Dunedin (16,700 km from Aihkiniemi) and Invercargill (16,677 km away), which are the most distant AM stations from our QTH that exist. AIH88 continued with very good conditions to North America, so we have loads of recordings to go through. Since this time we were not joined by any TV news group reporting about DXing, we made a couple of videos ourselves, and they are linked to the report. [HCDX] AIH88 DXpedition Report from Lapland now online!
The latest Aihkiniemi DXpedition report is now online! Come and see what Arctic AM DXing can be at its best. One again I have spent an intensive week of AM DXing in Aihkiniemi in northern Finland. I got some nice new catches especially from Australia, Japan and the Philippines. Also Gold FM from Fiji (990 AM) and V6AH from Micronesia (1449 AM) were identified. A couple of good mornings to Latin America resulted in a major load of stations from Argentina and Brazil, and North American stations were picked up every day during the two-week DXpedition. In the report you can also enjoy photos of aurora borealis, the northern lights, for which Lapland is an ideal travel destination. [HCDX] Ready to DX very soon in the Finnish Lapland?
Here's a unique once-in-a-lifetime offer to foreign AM DXers. Are you interested in DXing in the Arctic DX paradise of Aihkiniemi in the Finnish Lapland with some local help? Can you leave for a week of DXing at a short notice? If so, read on. DXing in an entirely new location can be very challenging, because it is difficult to know what antennas to use (we have 13 1-km-long Beverage antennas), when to listen to which directions and how to interprete the changing propagation conditions. Learning it all is sooo much easier if you go there with someone who is already experienced in the Arctic conditions. Now there is a possibility that one of you could join me for a week in Aihkiniemi from October 28 to November 4. I would be able to personally guide you to the secrets of Arctic DXing, and I can promise you an unforgettable DXing experience, whatever the space weather happens to be. I'm one of the founding members of Aihkiniemi, which was built in 2010. This is the first time in these seven years that anyone of us is making an offer like this, although the cabin is and has been open to foreign DXers to rent and to explore the AM band on their own, and many have taken advantage of that opportunity. Here's the thing. I'm going to Aihkiniemi already on October 21 for two weeks of intensive AM DXing. Fellow DXer Jim Solatie will join me, but it looks like he needs to leave before the first week is over. In that case there would be room for another DXer for one week. I will be traveling back to southern Finland on November 4, arriving by train in Helsinki in the morning of November 5, so that's when the fun will be over. These dates are fixed. So how much would it cost? You would be paying: - half of the weekly cabin fee (250 out of 500 euros) plus expenses when we go for shower in nearby premises - half of our return trip costs by car and rail from Aihkiniemi to Helsinki - your own groceries, meals and other personal expenses - your travel to and from Finland, naturally ;) What kind of a place is it? Nihao! A news crew from the Chinese news agency Xinhua traveled 1,200 kilometers from Helsinki to Aihkiniemi in Finnish Lapland to shoot a report on AM DXing. What did they find? - A total of 14 Beverage antennas (each 3,000 ft./1 km) spread out in the wilderness, probably a world record. - DXers spending afternoons trying to identify mostly Chinese AM stations. - Reindeer, hundreds of them, and indigenous Sami people rounding up the reindeer, as part of an age-old tradition that is still very much alive. And we were present when the highlight of the year for reindeer herders arrived. The 29th DXpedition to Aihkiniemi ended last weekend, and now you can read a comprehensive report about it at http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/aih29rep.dx. Propagation conditions ranged from fairly good to rock bottom. However, for at least one week out of the three-week DXpedition there were decent conditions to North America and the Far East. Viime aikoina herra Vantaalla, Suomen Mika Changzhou, radioliikennettä asema lähetti kirjeen, toivoen radio vahvistuksen.Olen Pekingissä, 10 maaliskuu 2010 23:00, Puolan 747khz kuulla aseman lähetyssignaaleja voivat myös olla merkki kuunnella äänenlaadun, mutta ei kovin hyvä sen todistaa, että minä kuunnella radioaseman lähetys, kiinnitin MP3 tallenne aseman jingles edellisessä kohdassa.Mika kirjeessä kuvataan myös tie, hän on toimittaja, radioasemat ja tv-asemilla Suomessa ulkomaan uutiset kirjeenvaihtajia. Viimeisten 30 vuoden aikana, olen hyvin sitoutunut kuunnella kaukainen lähetys radiosignaaleja, joka on tullut minun kiinnostusta. Mika kertoi kuunnellut yleisjakelusignaalit yli 200 maassa ja alueilla. [DX] AIH18 DXpedition report from Finland
Yet another DXpedition report from Aihkiniemi in the Finnish Lapland can be found on DXing.info at http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/aih18rep.dx Logging AM stations from Malawi, Uganda and other African countries was the highlight of this October DXpedition. From the East, new Thai and Chinese stations were heard often. AIH18 began just two weeks after we concluded AIH17, and in between there were no major changes in propagation. We had a total of 13 Beverage-type antennas, each about 1 km (3,000 ft) in length. The latest addition was an antenna pointing at 160 degrees, which proved to be very useful. A new 1000-meter-long Beverage wire to the right direction didn't hurt. And, with a total of 13 1-kilometer-long wires, there's always something to listen to. A DXpedition this early in the season allowed for many extracurricular activities, such as building antennas, hiking on the tundra, more generally enjoying the nature, and shooting the northern lights without freezing your toes off. Lapin-pedikset ovat useimpien dx-kuuntelijoiden haaveissa. Haaveiksi ne usein jäävätkin, koska hyvää paikkaa ei ole helppo löytää, ja antennien rakentaminen on niin työlästä. Me Aihkiniemessä haluamme tehdä huippupediksen mahdolliseksi kaikille dx-kuuntelijoille. Siksi tarjoamme mahdollisuutta vuokrata pedistukikohtaamme Aihkiniemeä silloin kun emme ole itse paikalla. Aihkiniemi on todettu kuuntelutuloksiltaan loistavaksi, ja antennit ovat valmiina. Tai ovat sen jälkeen, kun me niitä taas talkoilla tänä kesänä parantelemme. Joka tapauksessa ensi talvesta lähtien voit varata Aihkiniemestä unelmien pedisviikon. Tai vaikka kaksi. Lapin pediksen järjestäminen ei ole koskaan ennen ollut näin helppoa. [HCDX] LEM295 DXpedition report from Finland published
Here's a follow-up to the Aihkiniemi DXpedition report published a couple of days ago: The second leg of our two-part DXpedition (first in Aihkiniemi, then in Lemmenjoki) began in a very sad way; our landlady Kristiina Jomppanen had passed away just two days earlier at the age of 90. Her sons reassured us that we would nevertheless be most welcome, and that they will be happy to host DXers also in the future. DXing didn't offer much consolation. Solar weather was unfavorable, and conditions began to improve only just before we had to leave. Still, quite a few nice new stations caught - and plenty of time for photography! [HCDX] New DXpedition base in Finland becomes instant success
The first ever purpose-built DXpedition base in Finland was constructed earlier this year, tested by us in October, and found to be excellent. A spartan cabin in the middle of nowhere is equipped with nine beverage antennas, each almost a kilometer in length. A bunch of New Zealand AM stations and a 10-watt highway advisory station from Alaska were among the highlights heard in Aihkiniemi. Conditions on the AM band were pretty good, with many interesting catches especially from the Americas. KAZille tms. - Sisällä on antennijohtoon säädettävää tasajännitettä (6...12V) tekevä pienempi boksi - ulkopurkki syö virtaa max 10 mA, joten pattereillakin tätä ajaisi vaikka kuinka kauan - 1 kpl LM317 - 1 kpl potentiometri ja pieni kasa diskreettejä - Välillä tavallinen 50 Ohm syöttöjohto, eikä muuta Tuo toimii kyllä näin pöydällä, mutta olen vasta nävertelemässä koteloita yms. eli en ole päässyt kokeilemaan käyttöä oikeassa ympäristössä. Jos jotakuta kiinnostaa ryhtyä kokeilijan ja keksijän hommiin, niin voin kyllä piirtää skeman puhtaaksi, ottaa protoista kuvia jne. Tuo on senverran yksinkertainen vekotin, ettei reikälevyä kummempi toteutus oikein maksa vaivaa. Ulko-osan säätä sietävä kotelointi on melkein rakentelun vaativin osuus. Jyri Kyllä kiinnosta kovasti. [HCDX] New DXpedition report from Finland
After a two-year break in AM DXing, I finally found the time to spend slightly over a week in the Arctic Northern part of Finland on a DXpedition. This was DXpedition number 271 in Lemmenjoki, the most popular DXpedition location in Lapland. Some of the highlights include picking up a bunch of X-band stations from Australia and Argentina. Conditions were not as good as two years earlier, but this was the first time that I was able to use the magnificent Perseus receiver, so the sheer volume of recordings is such that there will still be some neat catches to be discovered, once I get to go through the recordings. [HCDX] New DXpedition report from Finland
If driving hundreds of miles just to listen to the radio isn't crazy enough, picture this: I flew thousands of miles from Washington D.C. to Finland to try to pick up stations from around Washington D.C. Well, going to Finland was really a Christmas vacation trip, but a DXpedition to Lemmenjoki was a vital ingredient of it. Fortunately we had some leeway in the timing so that both I and fellow DXer Jari Ruohomäki were able to head north right after Christmas to enjoy improving conditions until the expected rise in solar activity would hit in early January... My sabbatical year is drawing to an end, so I have compiled a collection of radio station recordings from my temporary home, the Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area. Pretty busy all the time, so I barely had time to use a Sangean 909 which I bought just before departure. No new discoveries on the dial, BUT Camp as-Sayliyah proved to be the right place to find out more about Information Radio and Commando Solo: Where do the transmissions on different frequencies really come from? Where are the aircraft based? And how many are they? When and how were the transmissions extended - and how much of it was revealed in the Coalition press briefings? And the rest of the story.
