[ECOLOG-L] Research for Funding research for student from developing country
Hi Ecologers, I am in the first year of my Phd (Public and Environmental economics option) here at The University of Antananarivo (Madagascar). My research proposal thesis is about the Issues between Payments of Environmental Services (PSE) and Climate Change; in the case of Biodiversity conservation services and carbon services (Reduction of emissions due from Deforestation and Degradation or REDD) Talking about Madagascar, it is among the 'hotspot' country in biodiversity side in the world but it is one of the most vulnerable countries. In fact, Madagascar has its peculiarities and characteristics in terms of biodiversity and climate: - First, the large island has a tropical climate. It faces every year to tropical cyclones (the Mozambique Channel to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east). Hence, the Malagasy population is quite vulnerable to floods and diseases caused by these disasters. Note that deforestation is concentrated in the tropics. Annually, 15 million acres lost since the beginning of the 21st century (FAO, 2007). - Madagascar has a rich biodiversity and high rate endemism compared to other countries. The forest cover is home the most endemic species fauna and flora in the world. Unfortunately, Madagascar is no exception to the rule of increased degradation of natural resources because of the irresponsible practices. Pressures on natural resources in Madagascar continue to worsen. These threats are mainly from the high concentration of human activities. So, my thesis project is talking about the role of developing country as Madagscar for REDD. Then, I am waiting , with pleasure, from you some paper or journal links, internship links, fundind links,... [ECOLOG-L] Job: STEP position, NA Bird Phenology Program
STEP PositionUSGS/ Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, North American Bird Phenology Program Part- Time Computer Programmer Summary: Widespread impacts of Global Climate Change are suspected for most plant and animal groups. However, in most cases past information on abundance and distribution of these groups is lacking and consequently, comparisons of current to past circumstances cannot be made. The USGS possesses 6 million cards collected by its agency predecessors since the 1880s on when birds arrive and depart in the spring and fall. These phenological measurements are unique in both their quantity, length of time, and geographical scope and are the best available dataset for analyzing changes in bird migration phenology in the world. Unfortunately, it exists, until recently only as paper copies in archived files. Recent work at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center has begun to develop scanning, processing, and entry procedures for these data using web interfaces and public data entry for what is now called the North American Bird Phenology Program (BPP), http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bpp/www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bpp/. Statement of Work: 1. Types of services required: Currently, volunteers from around the MD/DC/VA area come into the BPP office to sort and scan all of the migration cards. The scanned images are then loaded onto the web where volunteers online transcribe them and send them into a program database for analysis. Tasks will include but will not be limited to: track the number of cards scanned, run scanning scripts to upload cards to the development and production server, create charts and graphs for the BPP website, work on interface changes to the BPP website and data entry page, and assist in database development. 2. Required expertise/skills: a. Applicants must be majors in computer science, environmental science or similar field. b. Applicants must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing. c. Experience in Client and Server side database development, manipulation, and programming. Knowledge of PHP, HTML, SQL, AJAX, Visual Basic and Windows environment programming is needed. Applicants must have knowledge of computer software used to summarize and visualize data (i.e. Excel, Access and SQL Server) and preferred working knowledge in Adobe Dreamweaver and Photoshop, with a strong interest in learning more. d. Knowledge of the distributions and natural histories of North American birds is not required, but considered a plus. 3. Eligibility requirements: To be eligible applicants must be either a currently enrolled student or a recent graduate (within one year of graduation date). Individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. · Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. · Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. · Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. · Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. · Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field. · **OR responsible IT experience in all of the competencies listed above. 4. [ECOLOG-L] Fear and Intimidation
All: Recent activity (and inactivity?) on Ecolog has alerted me to the apparent fact that these ancient emotions and dominance-posturing are all too alive and well right here and now. Almost everyone has some degree of awareness of the potential hazards of posting anything to the Internet, and the fact that it doesn't require facebook posts to expose one to every genius and kook in the world. My present concern is confined to concerns about the potential of Ecolog, and how much of that potential is unrealized. Here is a small list of my observations over the last decade or so of reading and posting to Ecolog: 1. Judging from the off-list emails I've received, I've come to the conclusion that students, in particular, are wary of posting to Ecolog. I think I know some of the answers, but I would like to know the whole gory story. [more of the list later . . . ] WT PS: You can (of course!) respond off-list if you don't want to expose yourself and your ideas to the (13,000+ - subscribers?) world. In your reply, however, please don't alter the beginning of the subject-line, on or off-list. Feel free to add subsidiary subjects after the existing subject. Or, if you want to start a new, but relevant thread, feel free to do so.
[ECOLOG-L] Last chance to be involved: Entomology section of the USA Science and Engineering Festival.
I have been notified by the USA Science and Engineering Festival organizers have notified me that we need to finalize our booth descriptions and list of participants and contributors by mid-September. Thus, it is important that you coordinate with us by that time (though even if you are late or don't anticipate being able to, please let me know and we can try to work around this deadline!!!). We are still seeking both sponsors (for financial contributions to help with travel costs for volunteers and organizations like Audubon Insectarium, SASI, the Arthropod Genomics Consortium, some labs doing cool things like the cyborg beetle lab, the company that provides the giant robotic insects for events, etc.), participants (organizations or other entities who want to come and show off what they do that fits with one of the 6 booth themes), contributors (those who can't send someone physically but can provide materials like posters, live and dead insect specimens, pamphlets, display items, things to hand out and other things that will contribute to one or more of the booth themes) and volunteers (individuals who can come and help, representing an entity or just on their own). I anticipate that we will be getting all the sponsorship within the next 2-3 months. We expect that if we meet our sponsorship targets ($5,000-10,000), that most participants will have access to some assistance with travel. If you want to come and participate, identifying sponsors at this stage would be the most important thing to do right now! Otherwise, let us know what you can bring to the table to make this section a success! :) Also, of you know of or are a member of any Entomology CLUBS (anywhere, but particularly in the Washington DC/Northeast USA area) please pass this along to them!
