create new courses. The faculty teaching load at Birmingham-Southern
College is three courses each term and an intensive course in the January
Exploration term.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in
undergraduate teaching and to the liberal arts; the College seeks
applicants who show a genuine passion for teaching and scholarly inquiry.

[ECOLOG-L] Multiple Tenure-Track Positions - Coastal Ecosystem Dynamics Group at the University of Florida

2016-09-22 Thread Kaplan, David A
Multiple Tenure-Track Positions Announcement - Assistant to Full Professor
Coastal Ecosystem Dynamics Group
University of Florida

The Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment (ESSIE) at
the University of Florida invites applications for multiple tenure-track
faculty positions at Ast/Aso/Full Professor levels. Candidates must hold a
doctoral degree in an appropriate field of science or engineering. We seek
creative, highly productive scientists who have demonstrated innovative
research in the areas of coastal hydrodynamics, coastal geotechnical
engineering, coastal ecosystem ecology, and/or coastal ecological engineering.
The successful candidates will complement an existing group of faculty that is
developing the ESSIE Coastal Ecosystem Dynamics Center and graduate program to
investigate the complex dynamics of natural and manmade coastal systems. The
review of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until all
positions are filled.

Coastal ecosystems sit at the interface between marine and terrestrial
environments, and their structure and function are controlled by complicated
interactions between hydrodynamic forces, geotechnics of natural and man-made
systems, and organisms that biogenically build coastal reefs and wetlands. The
mission of the Coastal Ecosystem Dynamics program is to conduct research into
the diverse challenges facing coastal ecosystems, infrastructure and
communities, while preparing graduate students to be leading engineers,
scientists, and scholars in the face of coastal change. More information about
the CED program can be found at: https://faculty.eng.ufl.edu/ced/people/.

Preference will be given to candidates with a research focus in one of three
areas: 1) coastal turbulence and transport processes, 2) coastal ecohydrology,
ecological engineering and ecosystem resilience, and 3) coastal geotechnical
engineering. Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in and record of
interdisciplinary research that aligns with the mission of the Coastal
Ecosystem Dynamics Center. Research approaches can include theoretical,
numerical, or experimental methods. The successful candidates will be expected
to build a strong externally funded research program; provide professional
service; teach and develop courses at the undergraduate and graduate level; and
develop research collaborations and synergistic activities with other faculty
members of ESSIE, the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, and the
University of Florida.

To be considered, interested candidates should apply through the University of
Florida by visiting http://explore.jobs.ufl.edu/cw/en-us/listing/, referencing
requisition number 495161, and attaching:
- Current CV
- Statements of teaching and research plans (2-3 pages each) with a focus on
how those plans will support college, school, and Coastal Ecosystem Dynamics
Center initiatives,
- Up to three representative journal articles (co-) authored by the applicant,
- Names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of five references.

For more information about the position, ESSIE, and the department, visit
www.essie.ufl.edu, and contact Alex Sheremet at
alex.shere...@essie.ufl.edu.

The University of Florida is an equal opportunity employer, women and
minorities are encouraged to apply. The "government in the sunshine" laws of
Florida require that all documents relating to the search process, including
letters of application/nomination and reference, be available for public
inspection.

California Lichen Society Grants Program

Applications due October 1

The California Lichen Society offers small grants to support research
pertaining to the lichens of California. No geographical constraints
are placed on grantees or their associated institutions. The grant
application process is very straightforward; except for the letter of
support, it is possible to complete an application in two hours or
less. Required information includes project title, description, time
frame, budget, academic status, etc.

Applications are reviewed anonymously by members of the grants
committee based on completeness, technical quality, consistency with
CALS goals, intended use of funds, and likelihood of completion. Grant
proposals received by October 1 each year will be considered for that
year's grant cycle. Usually, two grants are awarded to separate
individuals, however during some years both grants are awarded to one
person. All grants are partially dependent on member contributions,
therefore the amounts of these awards may vary from year to year. This
year the total amount of grants to be awarded is $1750.

The application instructions can be read online or downloaded from

the work supported by CALS. 2) Submit an article to the Bulletin of
the California Lichen Society. 3) Submit any relevant rare lichen data
to California Natural Diversity Data Base using NDDB’s field survey

[ECOLOG-L] Research questions in terrestrial ecology

2016-09-22 Thread Carolyn Loeb
Dear ECOLOG members,

As a M.S. student in New Hampshire who is in the process of designing her
master's thesis, I am looking to research unanswered and relevant questions
relating to terrestrial and ecosystems ecology and particularly those
focusing on landscape-level drivers of change (especially climate change).
I anticipate using GIS as a project tool and am open to doing field work,
though would probably be best working with existing data sets if analyzing
long-term trends.

*What questions in terrestrial ecology do you feel are important to answer
that could be done within the scope of a master's thesis? *I am looking to
focus my work in a topic that is relevant to the northeast and ideally is
in demand by a local or regional organization that could use the project in
decision making. Of course, any funding knowledge you have for projects of
this kind would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have. While I have been
conducting literature reviews and perusing ResearchGate questions, I would
like to hear directly from other ecologists as to where they think our
current needs lie.

All the best,
Carolyn Loeb

The Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology at the University of
Göttingen is inviting applications for the position of a

Professor of Forest Nature Conservation
(salary grade: W2 NBesO)

to start at the earliest possible date.

We are seeking applicants for a tenured position in the field of Forest
Nature Conservation (W2). The selected candidate will run a research program
focusing on the development of science-based conservation concepts through
the analysis of ecological communities using experiments and modeling. These
conservation concepts should be based on quantitative relations between
management, biodiversity and functions of forest ecosystems and contribute
to the valuation of ecosystem services. The successful candidate is expected
to actively contribute to our faculty’s research programmes ‘Forest
ecosystems and biodiversity’ and ‘Sustainable forestry and global change’.
Interest to conduct research in both temperate and tropical forest
ecosystems is desirable.

The successful applicant will undertake teaching-related tasks in forest
nature conservation as part of the faculty’s bachelor’s, master’s and
doctoral programmes, including basic knowledge on the legal basis and
planning concepts of forest conservation projects. Furthermore, an active
role in contributing to the international English-language bachelor’s
programme entitled “Molecular Ecosystem Sciences” is expected. Due to the
international profile of the professorship and the students, lectures are
given partly in English and in German.

The requirements for appointment to this post are derived from Article 25 of
the current version of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act. Further
details can be provided on request.

Applications from scientists and researchers from abroad are particularly
welcome. The University of Göttingen aspires to increase the proportion of
women in areas in which women are underrepresented, and would therefore like
to strongly encourage qualified female scientists and researchers to apply
for this position. Disabled persons who are suitable for the post will be
given preferential consideration.

Please submit all application documents including a curriculum vita, a list
of publications, an account of your teaching and research activities and
details of external funding in the form of one pdf document by 30 November,
