Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft- Antennas and trees

2004-09-10 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hello Alan,

Carrying or using a slingshot is illegal anywhere here in Scotland. Use of
archery hardware has to be cleared by the police. The use of tennis balls is
not restricted in any way. Maybe your website will answer my questions ( I
shall be visiting) :
With a Pneumatic Tennis Ball Launcher, can one put a line over a
chosen branch at a desired spot , say 100 - 150ft up, assuming that a clear
line of sight exists between launcher and chosen branch , and no wind gusts?
And what is done to prevent the ball spinning around a branch and thereby
making the effort useless ? I appreciate that practice makes perfect. I do
know that lobbing a line over the top of a tree can be of little use except
for temporary set-ups. By chosen branch I mean a branch that allows the
final catenary / support rope to exit the tree without chafing against other
branches or foliage in any weather conditions.
I am looking for a method to replace the way I have been doing things which
is a little slow - although I can put a line exactly where I want it at
120ft up. Height is not really a problem.

We use slingshots and archery in the forest (but they are generally
illegal
inside city limits or in residential areas), or Pneumatic Tennis Ball
Launchers (legal in most areas). The pneumatics are safer than either
arrows or lead sinkers, and capable of getting to 200 feet or more in
 height if needed.

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Suspension

2004-09-10 Thread Charles Greene

W4WFB,

I have two antennas supported by one tree each. On one I use a 1 gallon
chlorox bottle which I fill with water to get the desired weight and a
large pulley. The pulley is supported by another rope going around a
limb. However, I noticed that the weight did not respond fast enough to
relieve the strain imposed by the tree swaying, and it broke a #22 wire. I
replaced the wire with a #14 insulated wire and installed rubber tie down
straps about 3' long with steel hooks at the fixed end of the antenna. I
used 4 of them in parallel. On the other tree the antenna was longer, 90'
and the weight on the antenna, #14 insulated stranded antenna wire helped
some, so I just used the tie down straps and no weight. It was a bigger
tree and didn't sway as much in the wind. Both been up for over three
years. You have to replace the rubber tie down straps periodically.

[Elecraft] Line into trees

2004-09-10 Thread J F
I've found a simple sling shot and a one to two ounce
fishing weight and monofilament fishing line to be the
easiest way for me to get a line high into a tree. I
know some folks have had success using a casting
fishing pole.

You have to do some jiggling and have some patience
to feed the weight down. Slow and easy is the way to
go.

Somewhere I've seen a design for a compressed air
tennis ball line throwing gun, which looks like it
could be fun.

Use a basically similar method of rubber tie down straps here. Sent this in
reply off the reflector:

I use some heavy duty luggage elastic ties to provide for the movement of
the supporting 50ft fir tree on my 40/80 trap dipole. Have the antenna centred
over the house with a fiberglass pole on one of the chimney stacks to support
the dipole centre. OK at the rear of the house with the garage as a support,
but had to use a tree as the support at the front. Took the antenna end
supports down after two years for inspection and were still OK. Will recheck
after another couple of years.

Presume the same type of ties are available in the USA. These are three feet
long with a plastic covered steel hook on each end. I closed the hooks to
form an eyelet at each end. Works for me though we do not get much in the
hurricane line in the UK normally.

Although I haven't tried it, one of the larger variety of 'spud guns'
may be useful for this. I have one which fires a spud section around
200 yards when powered by 'high octane' hair spray :-)

The problem would appear to be how to attach the line to the spud.
Perhaps a light basket shaped mesh material loosely arranged over the
muzzle of the gun with a light line attached.

I have just done a swift 'google' , and plans for the combustion and
compressed air versions can be found here http://tinyurl.com/44rwh and

RE: [Elecraft] Line into trees

2004-09-10 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
A little less spectacular than cannons but reasonably effective in the right
sort of trees are small helium-filled balloons.

It takes two people with some open space around the tree. The balloon(s)
must be capable of lifting the initial line, but that need only be string or
heavy thread. Two lines are tied to the balloon(s). When there's no wind
(dawn, usually) one person lets the balloon(s) float up on one side of the
tree holding one line, then the other person takes the second line and
walks it around the tree until the balloon(s) are suspended above the tree.
Then one person pulls the balloon(s) down while the other person feeds out
line until the line is resting on the desired upper branch and the balloon
is in the hands of person pulling down on the line.

Now it's a straightforward process of attaching heavier strings/lines and
pulling them through until you have the desired weight line to attach the
antenna

It seems to work well with Oaks and other types of trees that have large
enough branches to support an antenna exposed where a line thrown over the
tree can reach them, or for less permanent installations in the upper
branches conifers. After all, except for needing two people and a wind-free
day to install the line, it's not a really difficult or expensive way to get
a line up about as high as you want and you end up with perfectly good
balloon(s) when you're done.

[Elecraft] Using the 10th LED of the S-meter for CW Tuning Indicator

2004-09-10 Thread Tom Hammond

Hi Folks:

Although I've been making and selling two different designs of LED CW
Tuning Indicator (both the KR5L and K6XX designs) for several years, I've
never installed one myself, so I have little experience along that line.

I'd appreciate hearing from those of you who HAVE installed one of these
devices, and more specifically those of you who have implemented use of the
right-most (10th) LED of the K2's 10-segment LED S-meter as the tuning
indicator LED.

From looking at the schematic, and the PC board layout, it appears that
such an implementation should only require that the indicator PC board be
grounded and that the LED line (pin 8 of the NE567 in the KR5L
implementation, and pin 5 of the XR-2211 of the K6XX design) from the
decoder be connected to pin 20 of the LED array. I'd greatly appreciate a
confirmation on this wiring 'theory' before I attempt to draw up a set of
installation docs.

Also, please indicate where you went to connect to the AF output of the K2
and whether you made any attempt to obtain a fixed-level output to drive
the tuning indicator.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

Tom HammondN0SS

[Elecraft] Re: Antenna weights

2004-09-10 Thread wa2dkg
Weights and springs both work to tension wire antennas...Weights are said
to have the disadvantage of rebound, but I have never experienced that
here in the northeast...Springs increase the tension on the wire
tremendously as the tree sways and the further the tree sways, the
greater the tension...This can stretch the wire and exceed the breaking
point of some element of the antenna assembly...The tension will always
be the same with a weight, no matter how far the tree sways...For the
last 4 years I have had a 30 meter dipole up using a 2 gallon plastic
orange juice container filled with water and anti-freeze...Works for
me...

[Elecraft] Finally my KPA100 and KAT100 living together

2004-09-10 Thread JEAN-FRANCOIS MENARD

Hi,

I finally put together my KAT100 and KPA100 in the same enclosure. That
permit me to put back my other cover on my K2 that include the KBT...
I found with the newer KAT100 kit, that this migration is very simple
to do. OK, maybe a little more space needed on the desk, but give me
big versatility...

Photos will be added on my website soon...

[Elecraft] Need a little help

2004-09-10 Thread Fred Jensen
Is there someone out there who really understands the Ref Osc/PLL/VCO
circuitry that could correspond with me a bit? I've gotten as far as
VFO Linearization which won't run. Some tracing and measuring suggests
some thing is wrong in this part of the circuit ... all RF levels are
quite low, and some of the waveforms aren't what I expected.

I have a DMM, a Tektronix dual-trace scope, and a CTS 3000B Service
Monitor. What I don't have is a good understanding of exactly what is
going on here. My electronic design and troubleshooting skills dropped
considerably with the invention of the transistor, and fell in the tank
when IC's came along.

Given the volume and diversity of traffic on this reflector, I think an
off-line discussion would be warranted.

Re: [Elecraft] Line into trees

2004-09-10 Thread Bob Baxter

From: Larry Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For years, I have used a light bow (30-40 lb pull) with practice arrows
to

shoot lines over the tall Georgia pine trees that I use for antenna
supports.

I remember in my archery days, several decades back, making and using floo
floo arrows which are helically fletched and untrimmed. When they reach
the top of their trajectory they descend straight down (good idea to keep
your eye on it). Google will tell you all about floo floos.

[Elecraft] Birmingham Amateur Radio Club Build Day

2004-09-10 Thread James T. Jim Rogers
This is a bit off topic for the Elecraft Reflector so please pardon the
band width. The BARC will host its first build day to introduce our members
to kit building tomorrow starting at 9:00am at the Bluff Park School
Cafetorium in Hoover, AL.
We will be building RockMites. Everyone is welcome. BYOR (Bring Your Own
Rockmite). Hopefully we will glean a few future Elecrafters from the bunch.
Share the joy of kit building!

[Elecraft] Question about Temperature Compensated PLL upgrade

2004-09-10 Thread jim danehy
The temperature compensated PLL reference upgrade has the following ;

parts list has a 10 uh inductor listed for L31, the original L31 was also a
10uh inductor.

The L31 in the upgrade kit is a 10uh. The instructions say : new one looks
like old one but the value is 12 uh.

I need a little advice here.

Re: [Elecraft] Question about Temperature Compensated PLL upgrade

2004-09-10 Thread Don Brown
Hi

This started out as 10 uH when two crystals were used. It was changed to 12 uH
because when one crystal is used to improve the temperature stability the
crystals at the time of the mod did not have quite enough pull range. Later the
crystals were changed and had more than enough range so the inductor was
changed back. The 10 uF is the correct one to use now unless you run into low
pull range on the crystal then you may need to use the 12 uH but this is not
likely now.

[Elecraft] QRP Afield Afoot

2004-09-10 Thread W0rw
QRP Afield Afoot - de w0rw/pm (Pedestrian Mobile)

i will be out hiking in the foothills of Pikes Peak (9500 feet) during this
upcoming
QRP Afield. i will be hand holding my Elecraft KX1 (s/n 292) running 3W
on 14,060 +/- 5 kHz.
My antenna will be an 8 foot whip and a 15 foot drag wire for a counterpoise.

The QRP Afield contest starts at 0300Z Sept 18th.
See Sept. 2004, QST, p.98 or
www.qsl.net/wq1rp/main.htm for more details.

Things to avoid while operating pedestrian mobile:
Deep valleys (they are always -20 dB)
Low hanging branches
Counterpoise eating thickets
Bears
Other hikers who step on your drag wire,
(i tell them i am operating a wireless radio).
Tripping (causes extra dits to be sent in your call sign)
Static electricity (Precipitation or Triboelectricity-put a100K bleeder
resistor across antenna terminal to ground, and remove antenna if a storm
approaches)

Things to do:
Use safety lanyard on radio to avoid dropping on rock
Make time for lunch, (i will be on 14342.5 at lunch time)
Bring extra batteries
Check out radio/battery/antenna before starting out on the trail
Bring a 2nd operator for logging

CU on the trailstay out of the valleys.

[Elecraft] RE enclosure

I second Ian's suggestion. This size enclosure would be idea for a station
accessory I'm working on.

Hi all,

I want to build a 4 way headphone splitter with independent volume

[Elecraft] K2/100 For Sale - REDUCED !!!

2004-09-10 Thread Brian Hunter

Hi, I am selling my K2/100 (Sn 301) with the following;

K2 HF Transceiver
KPA100100W Option
KSB2SSB Option
K160RX 160m Option
KDSP2 DSP Option
KAT100 100W Ext. Auto Tuner
Kenwood Hand Mic

Everything appears to work as specified, it's in great condition, never
used in the field. The radio was sent back for some construction help
on the KPA100 back in Aug 2002 and returned fully tuned up. We all
know the K2 is a superb radio, this one is in 100% functional
conditional and great cosmetic condition - a great deal !!!

PSK31 Mod
2nd XFIL Mod

I believe that all the included Options add up to about $1550 for the
kits plus the Hand mic, construction time, original shipping , tune
up/setup by Elecraft etc it's worth well over $2000 in total.

I'm looking for $1350 plus shipping ( to the continental US only ) or
let me know your best offer !!.

Payment via Paypal or Money Order only.

Please reply off the mailing list to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Elecraft] Line into trees

2004-09-10 Thread brianboschma
Absolutely. I have used bows/arrows, slings, etc, but a 9 ft fishing
pole, 10lb test, and a golf ball with a screw eye attached had allowed
me to place lines up to 60 feet routinely on backpacking QRP trips.
Plus the pole later froms part of a delta loop.

I've had my best results with a 1 oz teardrop weight {painted dayglo orange!}
and a common spinning rod with 6lb monofilament line! Usually I can
cast it over the limb of my choice in 2-3 tries. Regularly get it over 50' plus
trees this way.

[Elecraft] newbie

2004-09-10 Thread Larry Phipps

I'm considering a K2/100, but I have a question about serviceability. I'm
assuming because it's a kit with no SMT parts that everything is accessible for
trouble-shooting. Is this true? Can you reach all of the important rf component
pins from the top with a scope probe while the rig is operating?

I ask this because my TS-850S currently has a receiver problem, and most of the
rf path parts are SMT and on the bottom of the board, where they can't be
probed while the rig is functional... I'm really bummed about it. It's going to
be a major pain in the a** to fix.

My favorite rig I ever had for service was a Drake TR-7, but I don't think any
current radios use the kind of construction it did. The K2 looks like my best
bet for service in a modern rig. What do you guys say?

ALso, are there any features I will really miss compared to my TS-850S?

73,
Larry N8LP

[Elecraft] Antenna launching

2004-09-10 Thread J F
Chas, Ron, and all,

You know this is what I enjoy most about the hobby,
the plethora of ideas that get the job done. Some more
wacky and fun than others, but none the less effective
for the task at hand.

I did go and check the tennis ball type launchers out,
and think I have the parts to build one. I've seen the
spud launchers but tend to shy away from items using
explosive gases. I like the safety reminders, having
dodged a number of rick o' shays. I used the bow and
arrow, when I had access, even tried the guacho
method.

I have only one question: Has anyone built a catapult
for this function yet? I know they've been built to
launch pianos and in the UK to test castle seige
theories... Somehow there seem to be an antenna
catapult gap!
cheers,
Julius
