Darn it, why is it that I just always manage to buy a new gadget the day
before Wayne and the gang unwails a new product. I have a LDG AT-100 pro
coming my way and Wayne is about to give a talk on automatic antenna
tuners!

Got a Sierra (Only consolation is that Wayne designed it) three days before
the KX-1 was announced.

[Elecraft] Transmitting on Power up

2005-02-25 Thread n9bx
Hello;

New to list and just at alignment and test part III, page 74. I have been
getting exceleent suggestions from Gary at Elecraft but was wondering if any of
you had any similiar problems.

When I power up to do the test on Page 74 My rig is keyed up. Power output is
4 watts. Even when I reset using 456 at power up, same thing. Another Ham
Chuch had diode d1 in the TR switch backwards that produced this same problem,
I checked mine and all is well. Up to this point all alignment and tests
worked perfectly, and assembly smoothly.

I am using Torroids from the torrid Guy.

I know that I will have to go back and set everthing else back up since I did a
reset but this power output thing is preventing that.

I also do not have the key closed on the Transcceiver and have measured the
required 84K to ground to verify that this is so.

Curious though if I hit the XFIL button to so to FL2, 3 or 4, The rig acts
normally and all functions work and the power output stops, and the rig works
peerfectly. But when reset and it goes to startup I see Elecraft for 2
seconds, followed by the keyer speed and PO=0.1 even though the power output
is 4 watts at this stage.

Any help would sure be wonderful

thanks to all

[Elecraft] K2 vs. TT OMNI VI+

2005-02-25 Thread Martin Kratoska
I don't have a K2 yet but considering to obtain it very soon. I would be
interested to know if some reflectees compared receiver performace of
the TT Omni VI+ and K2 (DR for 2 kHz spacing and phase noise, birdies
etc). Another point of interest is the QSK - I know that the QSK of K2
is good but not astonishing, I am interested on QSK at 40+ wpm. What is
the upper QSK limit?

Hi Martin,

The QSK at that speed may allow you to hear between characters, depending upon
your spacing! You will not hear between dits above about 20 wpm. There is a
modification to improve this slightly.

The QSK of the basic K2 is quite smooth and not clicky. If you add the DSP or
KPA100 you may have to make some minor modifications to keep it that way.

My other rig is a TS850S. In comparison, the 850 is much faster, but the K2 is
much more comfortable to use in QSK mode, especially on a crowded band. The
850's QSK becomes noisy when there are a lot of signals close in frequency. My
choice is the K2.

All of the mods I've mentioned can be found at

RE: [Elecraft] Transmitting on Power up

2005-02-25 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Bruce,

The Power indication that you see when powering on the K2 is the 'Power
requested' setting of the power control pot, not the power output (4 watts)
that you are currently obtaining - so that is a non-problem, it will take
care of itself after the real problem has been solved.

There is no proper relationship between the XFIL selection and transmit
state - but ---
The only thing I can see in the schematic that MIGHT cause such a problem is
a short between the V BIAS-XFIL signal and the VALC signal lines - check the
resistance between Control Board P2 pins 30 and pin 32 and between RF Board
J7 pins 30 and 32, if you find a low or zero resistance look carefully for a
solder bridge between those two pins.

If that doesn't solve the problem we will just have to take things one step
at a time to find it.

If the Alignment Part II passed o.k. my suggestion
would be to start from page 65 and check and
double-check each step and part installed. I have had

approach it as though you just started on page 65 and

The Elecraft CW Net announcements are sent out each Saturday and the two
nets are run on Sunday evenings. Hopefully you don't have to work then.

Please join us :
Monday z (Sunday 4pm PST) 14050 kHz
Monday 0300z (Sunday 7pm PST) 7045 kHz

Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for net details.

I clipped that from my regular announcement. Please join us when you have
time off work. All are welcome and any code speed is accommodated as per
standard amateur operating procedure. Standard net protocols are followed
so if you have been in any traffic nets or MARS nets or ARES nets you will
know the procedure. Any CW rig is fine as is any power level. My wetware
AGC has limits though :) I keep my headphones back a bit so when the
stacked Yagis running 1.5 kW come on board I don't feel my eardrums
touch! But even the KX1s at 3 watts can get pretty loud.

[Elecraft] New KX1 Safety Lanyard

2005-02-25 Thread W0rw
i have made a new safety lanyard for my KX1.
i dropped mine on a rock once and but it survived.
The old safety lanyard i had was attached under the knurled case thumb screw.
The attachment at this point kept working loose and i lost a few thumb screws
in the snow.
Now i have the new safety lanyard crimped to a 7/16 Ring Tongue Lug and it
fits over the BNC connector.
Just find a nice big ring tongue lug that fits over the BNC connector and
crimp
it to a 4 foot cord.
The lug is easy to put on and take off by tilting it.
It will catch the KX1 even if there is no mating BNC connector attached.
Send me an email if you would like to see a picture.

Paul, if I understand your description correctly, then the KX1 is being
carried by the BNC connector when it's held by the lanyard.

The BNC connector is *not* connected to the case. It is only soldered to
pads at one end of the PC-board inside. I would expect that you are in
serious danger of breaking the PC board if much strain is applied to the BNC
connector.

I understand. But which is worse, a dent in the case, perhaps, from bouncing
off of a rock or the likelihood of a broken PC board from it being caught by
the lanyard attached to the antenna connector?

What I'd like to see is something like the soft, protective holster that
Fluke makes for their DMM's. Bright yellow is good too, to help find the KX1
in the bushes after it takes a tumble!

Hmmm... I wonder if Fluke makes a DMM the size of a KX1?

I just got about 6 emails telling me I was removed? They came from hams.
About 2000 have been banned from QRZ on the mere whim of the owner of that
site.

I understand if elekraft must have a nuetral position. I simply stated why
I do not come up on a QRZ search. I have held commercial FCC and Ham Lics
for 30 years.

This communication is not for publication, but for clarification.
If FRED is a friend of yours...well what can I say

Julius,

Thanks much. Comment re suggestd 40m CW frequencies. 7033 up to 7040
usually full of RTTY. 7040 up SSB , especially S.America and Russia at
times that 40m path open to West Coast US. If I can get on will search above
DX alley i.e. 7015 \to 7028kHz. If no bad QRM will check 7040 plus minus.
SSB 40m OK, we will find a gap-

[Elecraft] SSB Testing

2005-02-25 Thread John Webster
Hi all:

With respect to those asking for SSB testing or checkouts
or just wishing to make an Elecraft phone contact . . .
there is nothing like the present!

I am on 18157.5 right now with my K2/100 and would be
happy to talk to/help anyone who might like to come up
between now 23:30z (or when this appears on the list) and
say 00:30z (2/26/05), Friday afternoon on the West Coast.

This is an HFpack frequency, so there might be other low
power, portable or bicycle mobile stations around.

No problem if no one shows up, I'll just crawl back to the
safe world of CW :)

Actually your call and name does come up on QRZ. For address it says
withheld by request, that's all.

A lot of ops don't realize they can search for any US Ham by going directly
to the FCC database. It sez your are in New York City, N.Y.

The search engine is available at:

http://tinyurl.com/oeuo

That's a shortened URL that will take you there. The full URL is:

http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/searchLicense.jsp

Either one will work as long as the longer one isn't truncated by line
wrapping.

[Elecraft] Update SSB roundup and/or test

2005-02-25 Thread WA2JJH
My main interest was the SSB audio differences between lets say the first
SSB K2's , my self modified 3155, and 4000+ models.

I have a 1.07 rev SSB chip. Some early #3000's may have earlier chips. I
have not asked for any audio checks from any of the 100+ QSO's. Nobody I
worked had a K2.
I reasoned if I did not get any complaints using 4:1 compression with the
older 2.2 khz wide filter, I had good audio.

I would like to see how my audio sounds to a fellow K-2 and also try a
50W amp for 20M only I built.

I will be on 14.155-178 on Saturday after 2 PM EST.

I also wanted to see if the SSB filter mod is for me or not. I found on RX
it really works very well on 1.8Khz for RX this is good. I find not having PBT
not such a loss with good 1.8KHZ
filtering.

[Elecraft] SSB Testing

2005-02-25 Thread John Webster
Well, 17 meters is open here on the West Coast.
Worked 4 stations, but none with K2's.
I'll stay on for another half hour till 01:00z

Stations worked thus far:

KA0GEC
W2LO
KD5TXO (10w)
W9CWA

Give it a go if you like (the mike will not bite. . .
as long as you are not trying to load up a wet
noodle :)

RE: [Elecraft] Update SSB roundup and/or test

2005-02-25 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
This sounds like a purely subjective form of 'testing' to me. There are too
many variables to make a good judgement of one's audio quality.

-- The position of the transmit passband with respect to the audio
frequencies being transmitted is a large factor (FL1 BFO adjustment).
-- The width of the transmitted passband is a secondary factor.
-- The perception of the listener for 'what sounds right' may differ from
your interpretation.

The best way to test your transmit audio is to listen to it on a second
reciever (with the K2 operating into a dummy load and the other receiver
having adequate attenuation so it is not overloaded). Record your
transmitted signal and play it back to hear just how you sound - you may
even have another person who knows how your voice sounds normally listen
since we seldom really know what we ourselves sound like. Using these same
techniques, you can properly evaluate changes that you make.

You can get good intelligible audio at most any bandpass width if the
demodulated audio contains the audio frequencies required for best
intelligibility of your own voice - each voice is a bit different in that
respect.
If you want information on the critical audio frequencies for
intelligibility and fidelity, check out some of the articles that Bob Heil
has published - there was one good one in QEX a while back (Google may show
you some of them).

I have no direct relationship with Bob Heil, I just feel he knows his
products and audio technology quite well as it applies to Amateur Radio.
