The major blight in Los Angeles is graffitti. My printing plant is in an old industrial area south of downtown where there are quite a few gangs who like to mark their territory (similar to dogs). Changing C7 is not to my satisfaction as it also increased the tuning range considerably. So C2 or L1 would have to be adjusted too. After a more thorough search in the web I found out that changing R4 and R5 on the FPB has the same effect on the RIT range but leaves the tuning (VFO) range as is. I changed the 10k resistors to 56k which gives me about +/- 700Hz RIT. I wonder why this simple method is not described in the manual... And I wonder why the side effect of changing C7 is not mentioned either. It would be nice to decide the RIT range during build time like the VFO range. Keep on building! [Elecraft] K2 build planned...
I knew it would happen one day. The way it went was: I agreed to build a KAT2 for a friend, and she shipped her K2 to me for installation. Once I got it, turned it on, pushed a few buttons, opened it up...I was a goner. So my new K2 will be on its way soon. The serial number, I think, is #4442. What, if any, changes or mods should I be aware of? I'll not be using the rig for SSB, only CW, and I'm wondering what's the consensus on the performance of the KAF2? I'm getting one with the rig, and DSP is not affordable right now, so I'm wondering if I want to install the AF. Once they arrive, I'll have for sale a K60XV, KIO2, KNB2 and a KSB2...I'll pay shipping, price will be list. I'd consider a trade for a K160RX. RE: [Elecraft] Learning CW
Congratulations, Martin! I like to tell people, and there's *some* truth to the story, that the reason that I've worked 99.9% CW for 50+ years now is that I put so much time and energy into learning the code I wanted to get my money's worth out of it! A lot of people have trouble with hand copy on paper over 15 wpm or so. I had to teach myself a different way of printing block characters to reduce the number of pencil strokes and to keep the pencil moving right to left in order to hand copy at 20 wpm for my commercial radiotelegraph and Extra class Ham tests. Like you said, it's hard enough to do anything else while copying near your limit. Of course, the only thing I hand copy nowadays is a formal message and that's almost always on a keyboard. CW is far from dead. Indeed, with so many newer ops showing up on the bands, it's sure to be a popular mode for many decades to come, at least. As President Kennedy observed many years ago, we do some things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Perhaps everything worth doing is hard, at first anyway. Enjoy. You've got a skill that will bring you a lot of pleasure over the years. 73, Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] CW training tapes/CD?
It's been a long time since I did any serious CW work. I hit the wall at about 17 wpm 15 years ago and with more kids, etc. never continued. I'm going to get back into CW and besides copying CW on the air I'd like to consider some training tapes/CDs. So - two questions: 1) what training tapes have you used that work well to build speed, and 2) who offers CDs instead of tapes? I think the ability to go from track to track would be great vs. fast forward and reverse on a tape deck. One could even rip a CD and put the contents on a tiny MP3 player and carry it around with you all the time. I've thought about recording on-air QSO's and replaying that as well. For someone new to K2 building - like, say, someone who just ordered his first one yesterday :-) - would you recommend building the K2 as directed and then desoldering parts to add additional boards? The directions seem to recommend that after a quick skim. But it seems to me it'd be much easier to read directions for the add-ons and use jumpers like described below to avoid the need for desoldering. Has anyone had bad experience doing that? Re: [Elecraft] SSB Removal
Mike, I'd say its better to build the K2 as-is first, then add the modules one at a time. It's far easier to trouble shoot if you have any problems going along without the otherstuff already changed. With a good solder sucker it doesn't take long at all to remove whatever components necessary. It's been a while since I put my K2 together, but I do recall there were some steps you could do during the building process if you had certain modules that you were going to add. My vote is to build the K2 first, than add each as you go. It would be much harder to debug if you built the whole thing first, because you wouldn't know which part is fouling it up and you would end up having to desolder parts to put it back to it's original form anyways. Best of luck, take your time, and enjoy building your kit. 73, James KB2FCV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Seems to make the signal pop out of the noise so copy gets much easier. Makes the foxes much easier to catch and those folks out on the East Coast just a little better for the net :) For the price I think it works very, very well. Re: [Elecraft] K1 paddle
Bob, There are quite a few small paddles. Some are made from binder clips or plastic boxes and brass spacers while others are finely crafted instruments. Since they are all small and lightweight, you usually end up with one hand holding the paddle while you send with the other. Some do have magnets or other attachments, but these never worked very well for me. The two I am most fond of are the GHD GM701 Travel Paddle or the Palm Paddle. Both units store well and retract for traveling. They are well made but have very different tactile personalities. The GHD (I'm a big GHD fan) has a nice positive mechanical feel, while the Palm has a smoother, almost silent touch. I would recommend you check out the following website: http://www.morsex.com/ Marshall has a large selection of all sorts of keys and always has been helpful when I asked for advice. (NB: I have no connection to this vendor other than that of a very satisfied costumer.) I know there are many ops who are just as happy with a piece of foil and a thumbtack, but I seem to have a 'need' for the better made keys. It may take you a while to figure out what works best for you. Just to show you how personal these preferences are: I'm learning how to use a bug now and I have a long way to go. I thought that I would never make it, but the real truth was that I just wasn't comfortable with a Vibroplex. It may be my arthritis or a bone in my head, but I just could not get the bug to feel right until I tried a different brand. The non-Vibroplex bug works wonderfully well for me, but it took quite a while for me to try an 'off' brand. So you may have to kiss a few frogs before you find a prince. Good Luck. [Elecraft] re: cw
I am some what embarrassed to say this but the fastest CW speed I ever attained was 13wpm in 1980 when I passed my General exams. I worked three years to obtain this speed. I passed my Advanced exam later that year. My abilities suffered from lack of use because of pressing family matters in the 80's. The love of CW was still there and that MUSIC was always heard in my shack. Two strokes in the early 90's pretty much destroyed my ability to copy all but the SLOWEST fists (I wish and dream for 30wpm ability )along with hand copying. With the aid of hemostats and locking tweezers I build my rigs slowly. A K1 and a Multipig+ among them and soon a KX1 as it is on the way now. The CW music is still heard in my shack. Some times when I get the NERVE UP I send a CQ even at my slow speed and my old J-44 key as I enjoy the MUSIC of CW. After all I AM A HAM. FWIW I no longer own commercially built equipment. I've built it all my self from kits or UGLY construction. Building while CW MUSIC emits from a rig I built is the penultimate pleasure. [Elecraft] design challenge: KXPD1 paddle dock for the K2 tilt stand
Our KXPD1 paddle for the KX1 would work very well with the K2 if it could be directly attached to one of the vertical arms of the K2's tilt stand. This would eliminate the need for a paddle with a heavy base during lightweight portable operation. What we'd need is a very stable bracket that grips the K2's tilt stand and acts as a physical and electrical dock for the KXPD1. It should meet the following criteria (this sounds harder than it really is): 1. The KXPD1's paddle arms must be parallel to the operating surface when the paddle's front mounting surface is aligned with the K2's front panel; this means the dock will have to grip the tilt stand at some odd vertical angle with respect to the face-plate of the KXPD1 2. Should be as small and light as possible consistent with good mechanical rigidity 3. Must be usable on either arm of the tilt stand 4. Has to allow the KXPD1 to be attached in either of its two orientations (for left/right-handed use) 5. Can't scratch the tilt-stand's finish; this implies plastic or rubber jaws in the clamp (if rubber, it should be no thicker than necessary and have a durometer of at least 90 to prevent movement during keying) 6. One or more thumb screws (or some other means) should be used to allow the dock to be secured tightly to the stand 7. Must have a reliable cable for connection to the K2's key jack, with a strain relief at the paddle end (I recommend Belden model 1508A shielded 2-conductor + ground cable, or equivalent); an alternative would be to fit the dock with a second female 3.5 mm jack rather than a pigtail, and supply a male-to-male cable with it 8. Should be black anodized or have plain aluminum finish (like the paddle itself) 9. Can't look too klunky! (for lack of a better term) I'd love to take a crack at such a design myself, but probably won't get a chance this year. Anyone else interested in giving it a try? I've used a Timewave DSP-59+ with a variety of radios from something as basic as a RockMite-40 to Kenwood TS-820 TS-940 and Yaesu FT-100, all with good success. I haven't started building my K2 yet (it just arrived yesterday) but plan to use the DSP-59+ with it initially as well, and maybe later add the DSP filter option when I have a few extra dollars again. I should be starting to inventory my new K2 parts tonight and start building later tonight or tomorrow. 73, Mark, NK8Q Allentown, PA K2 S/N 4786 Mike,W8KRR wrote: I'm using an old DSP-59+ with my K2 with good results. RE: [Elecraft] DSP
Hi Mike Yes, I too have the DSP 59+, and use it all the time. Partly to supplement the K2DSP denoiser, partly to add some degree of filtering, but not much, and partly for an additional audio amplifier to drive my acoustic filter speaker. The speaker isn't real efficient, and takes more drive than a plain speaker. One feature that's been there all along, but I just caught onto recently, is the AGC feature. I've always grumbled about the AGC in the K2. When wearing headphones and straining for a weak signal, a local S9+++ signal can come on and give me a big headache. The AGC feature now is working well and keeps the output surprisingly level. A great boon to headphone users. 73, Bob N6WG -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Mike,W8KRR Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 12:01 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] DSP I'm using an old DSP-59+ with my K2 with good results. RE: [Elecraft] k2 and sb-200
Dwight, I am going to use my SB-200 with the Elecraft. I have purchased an item called a softkey from Harbach Electronics. It is a board that mounts inside the SB-200 and essentially converts the high voltage keying line down to something the K2 can safely key. I haven't installed it yet...it requires a little rewiring to get it in the circuit. Trouble is, Harbach is shut down right now, I think due to a fire or something and Jeff is not taking any orders until he gets his place back in order. There are probably other options, but this is the one I chose because it designed specifically for, and wires in to, the circuitry of the SB-200. [Elecraft] Yes! EQP-2005 is this weekend
The Elecraft QSO Party -- pre-announced in January -- will indeed be happening this weekend from 1500 UTC Saturday (March 12) to 1500 Sunday. We'll have the rules page updated by tomorrow, along with an official and final announcement. The basic rules have not changed, but we'll add links to any new software, etc. See Jerry's comment below about Writelog. There was some very useful feedback on the rules from last year (thanks, everyone). We hope to incorporate some changes in the future, but ran out of time for this year's contest. (Been busy around here!) Hopefully, this means that no one will have to do any software rewrites. Stay tunedand keep your fingers crossed for good conditions. RE: [Elecraft] K2 Q7 unstable resistance
Mike asked: The build for K2 #4661 continues... I am doing the final resistance check on p. 71 of the K2 manual (the RF board is basically complete now), and I am getting unstable readings on the Q7 collector. The readings are all above 500 ohms, as they should be, but they are constantly changing. Hopefully this is normal? -- Hi, Mike! Is the resistance steadily increasing as you hold the probe on the collector? (Just a guess). There's a big 47 ufd capacitor in the collector circuit that must charge up (C126). It'll take a while, depending upon how much current your DMM provides in Ohms range. Modern DMM's really restrict the current to protect transistors and diodes from damage, so the capacitor may take quite a while to charge up and let the apparent resistance reading stabilize.
