[Elecraft] XV-50 and Callsign software

2006-05-04 Thread Trevor Smithers
I've recently been talking to Mike, WA1EYP at Callsign software about including
support for the
XV-50 transverter in the K2 Ham Station Extreme control software
www.callsignsoftware.com

His reply is copied (with permission) below and basically says that he would be
quite happy to
include the XV-50 (and no doubt others in the range) if I could let him know of
any special
commands required other than just including the new frequency range in the band
database.

As I'm not a programmer I don't really know what's required so thought it would
be a good idea to
post on the list to see if the experts here can offer advise and suggestions.
Mike can be contacted
direct at mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Original message:

With our K2 software we anticipated new bands with a band database. We
permit the construction of custom bands as long as the radio physically
supports that band. The user enters frequency range, band label (i.e. 20 m)
, and scale color. Custom bands are like normal bands but are setup by the
user.

I have not been able to get programming info on the xverters. However if
they do not require any special commands in the software other than going to
their frequency range then they can easily be added. So if you can confirm
to us whether there are any special commands that we must use to use the
transverter we would appreciate it.

If there are no special commands required, on our next release we can simply
add the 6 meter band to our band database as we did with the 5MHz band.

Our current release does not have the 6 meter band in the band database.
Band functions are blocked on frequencies outside of the band database.

Thanks
Mike

[Elecraft] KPA100 and KAT100 in EC2 Enclosure : What do I need ?

2006-05-04 Thread Martin DD4UKP

Hello,

I have what looks like an easy question but I can't find the answer. I'm
the happy owner of K2/100 5346 that works great (except a low power
problem on 17 m with only 9w and 10m with 9w).

I would like to put to KPA100 in a EC2 enclosure together with the
KAT100 witch is my next project. If my understanding is good I need to
order the KAT100-2 and the KIO2 so that booth units can talk together.
What I'm am not shure about is if I need to also buy a EC2 enclosure. I
have the TOP with the KPA100, the bottom with the KAT100-2 so all I seem
to need and the two side panels. Do they come with the KAT100-2 or do I
have to order them ?

This picture only show the front and back panel so I'm not that
shurehttp://www.elecraft.com/kat100/kat100-2_panels_small.jpg

Hope everyone can understand what I mean !

Thanks a lot !

[Elecraft] Coaxial switch and two rigs

2006-05-04 Thread Pierre Desjardins
Hi Elecrafters.. maybe that question has already been posted, but I ask it
again. I plan to use an IC-706 MKIIG for SSB/VHF operations and a K2 for CW
only. I have a Daiwa CS-201 coax switch. The ''output'' of the switch will
go to an ATU (LDG AT-100Pro), and the inputs to each of the rig.

That switch shorts the unused output connector. If by distraction I use the
K2 when the switch is at '706' position's, maybe I risk to damage the finals
of the K2 (and same problem at inverse for the 706).

My question: Is the ''switch'' approach a relatively safe solution, or is is
better to manually change the setup via coax permutation?

2006-05-04 Thread Steven Pituch
Hi Fred and all,
I found using MixW for setting up my CW, SSB, RTTY filters much easier,
using the waterfall. Its $50, but the free trial version should work fine.
If you do the digital modes you will probably end up up using MixW anyway.
I have a lot of the CAT commands entered as Macros in MixW. I don't even
have to be near my K2 anymore, when operating digital.

I didn't use Spectrogram for that reason.

What I did use was one of the data mode programs which has a waterfall and a
spectrum display. I used MixW - which is my main datamode program - and in its
spectrum display mode which did the job very well. MixW you can download and

Manual Alignment (RE: [Elecraft] CAL FIL Spectrogram?)

2006-05-04 Thread Darwin, Keith
Or, do the alignment by ear! Yes, by ear. Your ear is a workable
spectrum analyzer you know, even though it isn't calibrated. Knowing
what I do now, here's what I'd do if doing it by ear.

1. Select the narrowest filter you have. Adjust the BFO setting so
that filter is a centered around a 600 Hz carrier as you can get it.
Use an on-air carrier or better yet a signal generator for the source.

2. While listening to atmospheric noise, Adjust each wider filter so it
has the same perceived tone center as the narrow filter. Check it to
see if a carrier is centered (I use RIT for this).

Then, over time, you can make subtle refinements to the filter settings
as your ears become more accustomed to the sound and your errors become
more apparent.

I don't believe you'll get top-notch results from this method but the
reality is the filters only need to be aligned well enough to work.
As long as the signal is in the passband, you'll be able to have QSOs.

In fact, I tweaked my SSB settings by ear AFTER I did the Spectrogram
thing. The significant passband ripple affected the overall sound so I
needed to shift things a bit to get a balanced sound.

It's been shareware, not freeware. The earlier versions were no crippled in
any way, but did ask you to consider paying for it if you were going to make
regular us of it. Later versions started including a timer that shut it off
after a few minutes unless you paid for it.

A dedicated regular here, Tom Hammond, N0SS, has the last shareware version

[Elecraft] K2 Part II Alignment Probs

2006-05-04 Thread Mark Bayern

I'm struggling with the Part II alignment of my new K2 (s/n 5430) and
looking for suggestions.

BFO Test -- The BFO high freq is a little low, but the overall range
is acceptable. This is probably due to the fact that I don't have a
way to set C22 for 4.000MHz.

CAL FIL -- when I use the numbers from page 89 of the manual and then
listen to the 7040 signal from an XG2 I am clearly listening on the
'wrong sideband'. When I use the values I received from Gary I can
hear the carrier on 'both sidebands'.

IF Alignment -- the S/N gets better and better as I screw in the L34
slug. It bottoms out before I reach a peak.

Question: Are all these problems related?

I could make an unknown change to C22 in an attempt to get the
displayed value to look correct -- but does that really make any
difference?

I could use spectrogram to adjust the filters, but my original thought
was to simply use the supplied values until this rig is completely
built up and then go back an do the fine tuning.

If the CAL FIL and the IF issue are not related I could change the
value of C182 to 150pf and try again on the IF alignment.

My next step will be to once again check all values of components in
the crystal filter, if amp and product detector and the soldering but
I really don't think anything will have changed from my check last
night.

Ideas? Suggestions? Are these issues related?

Like you, I used the settings from the manual for CAL FIL and they
worked OK. Several weeks after completing the rig I went back and
optimized them with Spectrogram.

I used a 2nd rig to adjust C22 to get the osc. to 4 MHz.

Just for fun, go back and give C22 a tweak and see if the symptoms
change. You have nothing to lose as you can always just put it back in
it's centered position.

Hi Martin!

First: Depending on your mechanical/electrical skills, you dont need
either the KIO2 nor an EC2. - Yes, all what you would need from an extra
EC2 would be the two side panels, the tilt standup, the feet. AND the
2D-fasteners! -Stingy as I am, I ordered my KAT100-2 without an EC2 and
build it myself from 1.5mm aluminium from my local supplier, the
fasteners were made from an 6x6mm u-shaped brass profile and the paint
was mixed at 'Bauhaus' - 1/4 gallon, enough to paint homemade EC2s for
the rest of my life;-). But, if i would have thought before about the
time needed - i *would* have ordered the EC2!!

KIO2: Well, if you could manage to get the needed signals from the
controlboard to your external amp/tuner, no KIO would be needed. But you
should look for an shielded calble if you won't risk to get spurious
emissions from the control logic into your receiver. And, if you also
can get the ttl-Interfacesignals to the KPA you would also profit from
the build-in RS232 inside the KPA.

- The philosophy why the elecraft guys probably won't recommend this is
just that if you have an extra KIO inside your K2 you can use it
independent from your external KPA/KAT.

My own approach is quite similar to yours: K2 with no KIO and KAT100 in
(selfmade) EC2 whitch will also be housing for a later planned KPA100.
For me, serial I/O will just be needed when I am at home, not for field
use, so I dont need the KIO2.

Hi!
I hope It may be helpful.
For the best result you can to use Spectrogram and any
HF-ocsillator. With HF-oscillator (XG1 f.e.) you can
search max. peak of X.FILTER, best S/N and bands
filters levels.

Run Spectrogram
Turn On an oscillator
Find oscillator signal (turn VFO)
Tune for Zero beat in CW mode (hold SPOT)
Run Cal Fil
Select FL1
Tap BAND -
Now you can to change BFO in small range(!!!) and
you'll see the max. peak of signal.

Another filters I calibrated using methods from N0SS
and Don Wilhelm. My MNI TNX for both OM!!!

Visit N0SS's web-site for download a Spectrogram
program.

Another point for the KIO2 is that if you want to use a K2 without
the KPA100/KAT100/EC2, you will still have the computer interface.
Handy for that camping trip or mini-DXpedition.

KK7P on his website discusses how to interface without a KIO2,

simplify the process. Given that by the time you reach this point
in the build process the cost of a KIO2 is fairly insignificant in
the total cost of the station. And I agree it does offer increased
flexibity of the radio. Well worth the minor investment. QRP or
QRO my K2 is good to go! (Could this become an Elecraft jingle?)

Also, the Elecraft Guys if you are making reference to the
Elecraft corporation do not, nor have they ever, offered support
for remoting the KPA100. That is a user modification/enhancement.
Many users, including myself, have found it fairly intuitive to
combine the KAT100 with a KPA100 even if it is an unsupported

just that if you have an extra KIO inside your K2 you can use it

Mark,

Can you be specific about how you are determining that the BFOs are on the
wrong side of the carrier?

Using 40 meters, tune in a signal, then tune the pitch of the signal to a
lower tone, observing which way you turn the VFO dial - if you have LSB or
CW selected, the pitch should become lower as you tune lower in frequency -
USB and CWr will be the reverse.

If you indeed do have inverted sidebands, then re-check the BFO range test
and let us know what the high and low BFO frequencies are. and let us know
the number (x.x) that was marked on the envelope your crystals were packaged
in.

Also, do you have the KSB2 installed yet or not?

There is a phone jack on the adapter that will ACCEPT an external PTT switch
(A footswitch is commonly used).

If you have nothing that you can use for a PTT switch, you can always use a

Doing the BFO Test from page 62:

BFO high freq 4916.20
BFO low freq 4911.09

BFO freqs measured at TP2.
band+ band-
FL1 4913.61 4916.21 4911.01
FL2 4913.22 4916.20 4911.09
FL3 4913.22 4916.20 4911.09
FL4 4913.11 4916.20 4911.09

The first column of freqs is the BFO frequency before pressing the B+
or the B- button. Note that C22 (the 4.000MHz calib) is not calibrated
at this time.

The crystal envelope had a 3.7 (three point seven) written on its front.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Part II Alignment Probs

2006-05-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mark,

The BFO frequencies look OK, and the 3.7 marking on your crystals say that
the IF frequency should be close to
the center of 'normal' (=usual), so if you have inverted sidebands, we need
to look for something else awry.

Tune to 7000 and put the counter probe into TP1 and tell me what the
frequency reading is there (in CAL FCTR mode) - 11915 kHz is expected.

Sideband inversion can only happen if the mixer (or product detector)
frequencies are incorrect. If your TP1 and TP2 frequencies are correct and
you still are receiving on the incorrect sideband, that would be a mystery
to me (the math says it has to be correct), so we would have to look at your
test setup - is it possible that you are driving a very strong signal into
the K2 and you are actually hearing both sidebands? If you hear both, then
either your filter is not working properly or your signal input is so strong
it is overloading the receiver, or maybe something else, but this situation
is not normal.

Don W3FPR

G'day All,

K2 #5492 is up and running in its basic form. Options for SSB, DSP, NB and
transverters will be added soon. Elecraft service was excellent and the kit

after finding a similar fault described in the mailing list archives.

Next wish is to get my CW skills up to my soldering standard.

7000.00MHz CW, St P of 0.60

TP2: 4913.60

If my math is correct, mixing 7000.00 and 11914.18 should have an
output at 4914.18. Is this the expected value? Is it on the 'correct'
side of the IF filter? (Keep mind that my C22 has not been set, its
just at the midpoint.)

I hear the incorrect sideband when using the filter settings shown on
page 89 of the Rev F manual. I hear both sidebands when using the
filter settings that Gary Surrency sent me.

Yes I was using a strong signal -- the high output from an XG2 with
the preamp still ON. I have now switched to the lower output on the
XG2 and turned the preamp off. Still hearing the wrong sideband.

I guess a wrong IF frequency would explain the problem with tuning the
IF can, but I'm still baffled about how the IF frequency can be wrong.
By the way, I can match the XG2 to the spot tone (do we still call
this zero-beating?) at 7037.60 on the display, but the tone goes down
when I turn the freq dial up towards 7040.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Part II Alignment Probs

2006-05-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mark,

Yes, your math is correct, and since your BFO is at a lower frequency than
the IF, that should give you LSB output - something strange is going on
here.

Let's take this off-reflector after this note, because we may have to
exchange a bit of detail information. It may be of interest to some, but
the specifics are not common for most cases, and I don't want to cause
boredom for other builders for your specific problem - you can report the
results to the list after we figure things out.

The VCO frequency is within the realm of reason, we do not need to look at
that further. Did you move the slug of L34 up near the top of the can?

If you would remove the [Elecraft} from the subject in your reply, that will
make your reply more obvious to me (it will go to my inbox rather than the
Elecraft folder - which I peruse more quickly than my inbox).

Go to Tom Hammond's website www.n0ss.net and download Spectrogram (it will
be near the end of the page). I will help you get it setup if necessary,
but I need to know how your filter bandpass looks on the Spectrogram display
before I can draw any conclusions or offer any suggestions. My initial
guess is that your actual filter bandwidth is much wider than expected
(indicating a problem with the filter itself), and your passband may be
straddling the zero frequency point - but all that remains to be seen.

Don W3FPR
