Re: [Elecraft] Single or dual paddle??

2006-07-11 Thread Paul
The problem is NOT the dual paddle. It's the keyer! There is another
mode besides iambic A/B that works just fine with a dual paddle. A
while back there was a lament in the brasspounders newsgroup about
the plethera of great quality dual paddles but no one liked the dit
dah dit dah dit dah iambic squeeze response. Most of use had come
from straight keys, bugs, cooties and we wanted a dit when we pushed
the dit paddle and a dah when we pushed the dah paddle no matter what
- squeeze or single push.

Someone mentioned an older ultramatic (various spellings) mode where
the last paddle pushed wins. So if you are pushing the dits paddle
and you squeeze so the dah paddle come into play, it the keyer will
switch to dahs. Releasing the dah paddle brings back the dits when
the dit paddle is still pushed. We all rejoiced. That's the kind of
predictability we wanted.

At this time the Jackson harbor PK4 chip supports that mode so I
think all their keyer kits do. Also, that chip is used in the new
Palm Cube keyer. Several older Ten Tec keyers use that mode. It's too
bad it is not offered in Elecrafts built in keyers.

If you find a keyer that supports Ultamatic (various spellings) I
think you will find your dual paddle much more fun to use - unless
you have always been on iambic and have kung fu like reflexes.

RE: [Elecraft] KX-1 ATU question

2006-07-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jean-Francios,

That is a normal occurrance, and is not unique to the KX1 and its tuner.
The wattmeter reads forward power (only) as measured on the transmission
line (or more specifically at the transmitter/ATU junction, and it should be
calibrated for 50 ohms. The same thing happens with many amateur wattmeters
although there are a few (such as the Tandem Match) that calculate the net
power output.

The actual power being developed is the forward power minus the reflected
power, when the SWR increases, the forward power required to maintain the
same actual output power must also increase.

In my KX1 work when calibrating the wattmeter in the tuner, I use both a 100
ohm dummy load and a 25 ohm dummy load to determine the 2:1 SWR points, and
I find that the net KX1 power does not ddecrease significantly with the 100
ohm load, but it does drop with the 25 ohm load. From that experience, I
would say that your increase in SWR is due to an increase in the load
impedance rather than a reduction.

I have been using a Bengali Simplex (dual paddles) for about 3 years

can fix it with Mastercard in the end, I hope, but I'd really like solve

In my experience it was a gradual thing. The rise of repeaters on VHF/UHF
made the Tech more attractive, because it gave 2 meter and 440 privileges. The
Novice didn't. Many hams I knew in the late '70s and early '80s wither started
with Tech or rapidly upgraded to it. This was even more common after the
General written was split in two in 1987

Techs did not have *any* HF privileges until the 1970s.

Novices only had small slices of 80, 40 and 15 meters before 1968. In fact,
the original 1951 Novice did not have any 40 or 15 meter privileges at all! 40
and 15 were added in the 1950s.

In 1967, when I was a Novice, the Novice HF privileges were 3700-3750,
7150-7200, and 21100-21250. 75 watts input maximum, crystal control only.

The center is supported by a 23 foot telescoping painter's handle with
a hook at the top made out of an old paint roller. The ends are
supported by 10 foot lengths of 3/4th inch PVC pipes to make an
inverted vee.

This loads well with either my KAT2 or KAT100. I added a W2DU 1 to 1
balun and I find the antenna so stable the settings the tuner picked
from the last camp site usually work at the next camp site with no
changes. I have a 1 foot jumper of RG8 between the tuner and the
balun. This works as is on all bands except 30 and 80 meters. On 30
meters 22 feet of feed line is a bad length and transforms the low
impedance of what is a 30 meter dipole to a high impedance which gives
the tuner trouble. I cut a jumper of 22 feet of 300 ohm twin lead and
wound it into a coil with a 7 inch diameter. All my twin lead feed
lines use alligator clips so to use 30 meters I just clip the
additional 22 feet loop of feed line in series with the 450 ohm window
line.

I have 22 foot extensions I can add to each side of the doublet to
make it 88 feet for use on our 75 meter SSB net. These extensions have
to be tied to a tree or other support but the 44 ft doublet is self
supporting by the 23 foot painters handle on the hitch of my camper
and the 10 foot PVC pipes which are supported by the rear bumper of
the camper and the front bumper of my tow vehicle.

If I want to work 160 meters or don't have a location where I can add
the 22 foot extensions for 75 meters I have a loading coil and can tie
the two sides of the 22 foot feed line together and use the loading
coil to make a top loaded vertical which uses the frame of my camper
as a counterpoise and that works about as well as a good mobile station.

I used to use a home made full wave quarter wave vertical on 20 meters
which used the frame of the camper as a counterpoise. I thought it
worked well but in 2001 the 44 ft doublet was brought up here on this
reflector. I built it and used both antennas for just two camping
trips. The doublet was so much better than the vertical that I quit
taking the vertical along. I have run QRP battery 1B for the last 5
field days and the weak point is me as an operator and not my station
or antenna.

Last week end I was set up at Fort Ransom State Park, ND. I worked
W1PID on 20 running 3 watts on a K1 and 88 foot doublet (I was running
the 100 watts). I QSYed to 30 meters and ran 5 watts on my end and had
a 25 minute QSO with K4AKC who was running a K1 and 4 Watts to a G5RV.
When we got done CU2BV from the Azores called me and we had a 15
minute QSO down at 13 wpm and I was still running 5 watts.

I have been camping and portable for about 39 years and used many
different rigs and antennas but nothing I ever had before has worked
as well with as little effort on my part as the K2/100 and 44 ft doublet.

I hope more of you try this antenna and have as good luck with it as I

The original point was, Why was I able to hear so much more on my 817

Re: [Elecraft] Cross-post from moon-net .. anyone using a K2 IF for EME work?

2006-07-11 Thread Mark Schreiner

Hi John,

Interesting post. Would be curious to see what responses there are. I
would think that the Rx Sensitivity is fine but not necessarily
dependent on the K2 as an IF. Whatever VHF/UHF/Microwave transverter is
used with the K2 as an IF determines the sensitivity (ie the
transverter, not the K2, determines the sensitivity). Additionally, the
system noise figure of the antenna, preamp, feedline and so on back to
the first Rx stage (in the transverter) are really what determines the
sensitivity, not just the sensitivity of the transverter (or the K2).
If the system noise figure is good and there is at least unity gain
(most transverters have more than unity gain) then there shouldn't be a
problem with the "sensitivity" of the K2 as an IF rig. Additionally the
benefit of the K2 as an IF is the excellent selectivity, but maybe that
is not so much of an issue except maybe during EME contests, but it sure
can't hurt!

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 vs. FT-817

2006-07-11 Thread Karl Larsen
When you try to compare two radios you get into a can of worms. I
own an FT-817 of about 5 years ago and it's a fine radio. It covers 6
meters and the two VHF-UHF bands that are not on a KX1.

But the KX1 uses less input power on receive and thus will last a
lot longer on the internal battery pack.

But the KX1 has no SSB and the FT-817 does.

You go around like this and miss the real good points of both radios
:-)

The KX1 is made to be carried in a pack to hard to walk to places. It
has a built in paddle and it works fine. I have taken my FT-817 on
similar trips and it does well too, but it needs more battery.

So both radios do the same thing but the FT-817 does a few more tricks.

Just to clarify: When it says select 10.0 or 10.1 it makes it sound like
you'll see both and you pick the one you want. The reality is you'll see
EITHER 10.0 or 10.1, depending on how you built the filter board.

The previous post was correct that you'll need to swap in the other crystal
to get 10.000-10.080.

Re: [Elecraft] Help with K1

2006-07-11 Thread Sandy W5TVW
You will have to do one of two things:
Obviously your K1 is setup for 80 khz of VFO range.

You will have to set it up for 150 khz. of VFO rangeOR.change the band
crystal.
If you assembled it yourself, you should have a "spare" crystal for the 30
meter band to do that.
It will then tune from 10.1 to about 10.180 instead of 10.0-10.080 mhz.

[Elecraft] K2 with XV144: TX offset without RIT/XIT

2006-07-11 Thread Rajiv Dewan, N2RD

Problem was: SSB transmit offset by 540Hz.

In reply to Steve's question: No, I did not have the RIT or XIT
engaged. Easy enough mistake to make despite the flashing indicator. :(

Just to dot the i's and cross the t's, I recalled that I had not set
not set BF2-4 in CAL-FIL for SSB when I installed the unit. I re-did
the CAL FIL calibration yesterday after diagnosing the problem. I
transmitted into a dummy load and listened on a nearby receiver and
found that now I seem to be on frequency, at least on the HF bands.
I dunno if this makes any sense. Perhaps I was on Fil2 with the
factory BFO setting for the filter. In any case, listening on HF I
now seem to be spot on.

I noticed the problem yesterday while having a 2m qso using the
XV144. I will try some on the air tests with the XV144 tonight.

Hope to get it all squared away before the CQWW VHF this weekend.

Thanks for your note,
Raj, N2RD

So I went to Walmart and found a pair for $1! How could I go wrong? Not looking
for HiFi here, just had to work! Figured it was perfectNo need to reply, I
know I'm a fool.

Audio output on the KX1 seemed poor, I was testing/debugging and couldn't
figure it out. After a couple hours of pain of having these things in my ears I
switched to a $20 pair of Koss headphones. All was MUCH better. AF gain at
9-oclock, not 4, audio quality was much better too!

I've also got a set of ER4Ps and another pair of custom moulded earplug
speakers. Need to try those too. But I'll probably find a pair of earbuds
somewhere around the house for the field.

"The KX1 also comes with a narrow crystal filter -- optional on the FT-817."

And it's variable bandwidth!

Plus, based on my limited experience (KX1 has only been built for ~1wk), I
think the UI of the KX1 is much easier to use than my FT817.

[Elecraft] Re: Detecting the LO [was: plexiglass] (Vic K2VCO) clarification

2006-07-11 Thread charles allison
Hi,

I remember reading about the Brits searching for spies who were tuned to
certain frequencies that transmitted coded information to the agents who
might not have even had transmitters.

A quick clarification. The IF stage is 455kc and the LO is an HF oscillator
that is offset from the tuned frequency by 455kc so that the difference is
fed into the IF stage for amplification. (I decided to use Kc rather than
khz as wwii predates the change in terms lol). By searching for the actual
LO frequency - the Brits counterintellegence people could identify which
radios were listening to the enemy's coded messages and avoid wasting time
on those listening to Churchill's speeches.

Will try to get on around 14025 +/- 5 this weekend as VR2AX/P and try to have
some fun. Hope to have a qso one day.

Wyn, VR2AX

Enjoy your K2 whether /P as originally intended, or for your home station

I trust you didn't have the RIT on by mistake ? I
find I often leave the RIT on and forget about it with
the K2. The flashing indicator just doesn't seem to
be obvious enough to me to remind me to turn it off.

Where can info be found about the Black Widow paddle?

Keep the info on the Blackwidow coming. Until I can afford an Elecraft Hex

I don't do well with brass, as my perspiration tends to leave marks on it.
Just wonder if you Blackwidow paddle owners treated the brass with Everbrite
and how well that worked.

Re: [Elecraft] QRP Power Level?

2006-07-11 Thread Tom Althoff

Wow...I sure wasn't trying to imply that! 8-)

My post said "where PARTICIPANTS define QRP as 5W CW and 10W SSB."

Specifically there was a website of a group who were planning SS activity
that stated that they were going to be running 5W on CW and 10W PEP on SSB
during SS.You didn't get a chance to see that since I sent it to the
guys off-list.

There are those who look at 5W DC and immediately translate it to 10W PEP
for SSB even if the "official" rules state 5W maximum power.

There seem to be many "standards" set by various organizations. The only
one that matters is the sponsor of the contest.

One safe rule of thumb... If you never exceed 5W regardless of mode ALL
contest sponsors will acknowledge you as a QRP entry in their contests.

Tom's email can be read to imply that ARRL Sweepstakes defines QRP on SSB
as other than five watts. The rule specifically states:

"4.2.1. "Q" for Single Op QRP (5 Watts output or less);"

Thus for SSB or CW, the max is 5 watts.

He is right about contest rules - be sure to thoroughly read a contest's
rules before operating in the contest. There are differences in the rules
for each contest that make it interesting. More than a few contesters
have been bitten by assuming a rule that doesn't exist in the contest at
hand...

I've sent Bob and Kent a few examples of QRP contests (and ARRL

Since this in an Elecraft list let's see what the Elecraft QSO Party
rules have to say about QRP power levels...

"When using QRP calling frequencies, use QRP power (5W or less for
CW/Digital, 10W PEP or less for SSB)"

When in doubt always ask the sponsor of the contest for a clarification
on what they consider QRP power on SSB (before the contest begins) so
you can operate the maximum power allowed for that mode. If the rules
say that 10W PEP on SSB is QRP...you can bet the house that the guys you
are going to compete against are going to be running 10W on SSB even if
they normally define SSB QRP as 5W.

Hi Kent
I went through this a while back.
QRP for every contest I could find is spec'd at 5w out,
cw or ssb.
Good luck and 73

Can someone tell me the "official" definition of QRP Power Level? Is
it 5
watts for voice and CW modes? I notice that many contests have a QRP
class
but they do not define QRP power and I cannot find it on ARRL site.
Thanks,
