I used to use a remotely mounted SGC ATU with my loop, but I missed the convenience of automatic bandswitching without having to transmit RF after each band change. A standalone, boxed ATU capable of being fully controlled by the K3 would be a nice future option. Fortunately for me, one of the few benefits of having to use indoor antennas is that I have only 2m of feeder between the K2 and the antenna feedpoint, so the losses even with an extreme mismatch are tolerable. -- Julian, G4ILO K2 s/n: 392 K3 s/n: ??? [Elecraft] any suggestions? cheap qrp xcvr kits
Hi all: I am looking for an inexpensive qrp transceiver kit (monoband if fine) and I would appreciate some suggestions. I do not want to be rock-bound. I'm looking at the Ten Tec 13xx series adn the MFJ Cub (93xxK series). Both are under $100. The keying waveform on the MFJ (as per ARRL review) looks like key click city to me (looks to be zero rise/fall time). Any comments on these radios? Any other suggestions? On Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 06:30:03AM -0400 I heard the voice of DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL, and lo! it spake thus: I'm looking at the Ten Tec 13xx series adn the MFJ Cub (93xxK series). Both are under $100. The keying waveform on the MFJ (as per ARRL review) looks like key click city to me (looks to be zero rise/fall time). Any comments on these radios? Any other suggestions? I've built the MFJ Cub (17m). Assembly was easy, though getting the board in the case was a bit of an adventure. Extra fun was added by sub'ing a BNC for the RCA antenna jack, which lead to taking a hacksaw to the PCB;) As for the waveform, I built it with the keyshape/QSK mods at http://www.w1hue.us/Articles/CUB2.html. I had a friend listen to it on the air and give it high marks for cleanliness, and the breakin is VERY fast and clean. Thumping is fairly significant with no antenna connected, but low enough to be thoroughly ignorable in real usage. It took some work to get the parts in place, but certainly seems worth it. (n.b.: I did that at build time, so I never saw how good/bad it would be without those mods. Alls I know is that it was good with them.) I DID do the sidetone level mod included in that bunch too, but it was rather difficult to pull off, and I'm not at all sure it's worth it. If I had it to do over again, I'm pretty sure I'd skip that part. The power output is significantly less than I was expecting. I'm not quite sure why. Casual checking didn't revealed anything, and I haven't had time to do more rigorous tracing. I also plan on doing the tuning linearization mod (see around same W1HUE site) at some point, both for the linearization and cutting down the tuning range a bit. Sadly, my radio time is near zilch of late :| Obligatory Elecraft tie-in to justify the list space: I warmed up for the build with, and used in the build/testing, a DL-1 8-} -- Matthew Fuller, N3TZJ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. A standalone, boxed ATU capable of being fully controlled by the K3 would be a nice future option. I agree. I suggested a remote tuner as a K3 option some time ago, but I know the plate is full at Aptos. I have an Icom AH-4 that I use with my IC-7000 in a remote configuration with my ladder line fed multiband doublet, and it is a really slick setup - both in terms of performance and convenience. Don't know what I'll do when I get my K3. SGC to me doesn't seem like a viable option. If you look at the power ratings for most of their tuners they are rated at 80W CW max. They have one that is rated for over 100W CW, but it is almost $1000. And they haven't released a new product in several years which makes one wonder about their commitment to the amateur market. A remote automatic tuner that operates seamlessly with the K3 would be a great option for Elecraft to consider. 73 ... Re: [Elecraft] K2 AGC, Seems a bit soft
I completely agree about the K2's great sounding AGC. The fact that there *is* some slope to the AGC to still allow the perception of various signal levels while still maintaining control, is a testament to the radio's excellent dynamic range. IMHO, it actually reduces listening fatigue by not excessively raising the noise floor for weak signals. 73, Dale WA8SRA Darwin, Keith wrote: Yes, Paul the K2's AGC is definitely soft. Re: [Elecraft] K2: different power drain
Warner, That is quite normal. The transmit signal chain does vary in gain from band to band, and is usually greater on 40 meters - the result is that less current is consumed for any given power level if the gain is higher. The K2 power control circuit keeps the power constant even though the per band gain varies. Another subtle (and somewhat related) observation that can be made as a result of the power control circuits is that the power will stay the same as the power supply voltage is changed - if the power supply voltage is decreased, the K2 current consumption will increase to maintain the requested power output level. 73, Don W3FPR Dr. Werner Furlan wrote: hello K2-specialists, I have a question regarding the reading of the internal ampere meter. Re: [Elecraft] any suggestions? cheap qrp xcvr kits
Doug part of the choice may be whether you want to build the unit yourself vs. buying something someone else already built to operate with. if you truly want to experience building the rig, it will limit your choices. TT1300-series. looks great on paper, good value over all. i have a 1340 - here are the limitations: (1) the xtals in the kit are not well matched, so your filter may be a bit wider than some other rigs. (2) the parts placement of the transmitter output matching circuitry is not ideal. check N5ESE's website for how to address this. i found there is one ferrite transformer involved, and its positioning orientation relative to the other inductors is the most critical (in my experience). (3) the PA bias network is not ideal, but it can be fixed (4) the single FET mixer in the receiver is cute but not the highest performance. it does work though. (5) the final assembly design of the rig is a pain if you have to dissemble it for mods or debugging. the bottom line is the TenTec won't work well as readily as a more refined kit, but with patience it can be a decent rig. note some choices suggested are direct conversion - great for a building experience but not as fun to use on congested bands. if you really expect to do some portable operating, rethink your expenditure into a simple rig vs. a K1 or KX1. 73, curt --- DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all: I am looking for an inexpensive qrp transceiver kit (monoband if fine) and I would appreciate some suggestions. [Elecraft] KPA100 Amplifier Keying
I've just installed the KPA100UPKT to bring #4687 up to date. Apparently, I messed up the amp keying circuit somehow. It now keys and unkeys with each dot and dash. Changing the TR time has no effect on the amp keying. Even when I set the TR to 1 second, the rig holds in transmit, but the amp unkeys between elements. I plug the amp into my other K2/100, and things work perfectly, so I know it isn't the amp. I've put an ohm meter on the amp key line and it shows the keyed line to be performing correctly, i.e. holding zero ohms until the TR releases. Any ideas? Have I damaged Q9 so that it won't handle the current/voltage of my AL-80B anymore, yet it gives good readings on my VOM? None of the other stuff makes much sense, like ultimate filter rejection, good seems to be 130 db, I guess nothing on the elecraft web page lists that. Can anyone match terms, or would Sherwood have to test a K3 their way? I expect to get my K3 any day nowbut wonder about the actual test results which might not come out for months I would guess... JT, That is the 'last digit indecision' type flicker, and it is not avoidable in a digital display except for really high end and expensive equipment. The actual frequency is in between 12099.28 and 12099.29 and the gate interval of the counter sometimes picks up one more cycle than at other times. Rapid variations in the higher order digits are an indication of a problem, but no problem when just the last digit is flickering between 2 consecutive digits. 73, Don W3FPR JT Croteau wrote: Just completed assembly of the RF Board, Part II. Getting closer by the day! I have the counter probe on TP3 and measuring 12099 kHz as I should according to the manual. However, it is changing back and forth somewhat rapidly between 12099.28 and 12099.29 kHz. Is this normal or do I have something wrong with the PLL Reference Oscillator? Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Amplifier Keying
Bob, Is one K2 set for 8R HOLD and the other 8R Normal? You should have them both set for 8R HOLD to get the amp keying circuit to hold in during keying. You might also look for a sneak ground path between the K2/100 and the amplifier. Your ohmmeter says the AMP should stay keyed, but it actually does not - so the answer may be in the return path for the amplifier relay - be certain the amp ground for the relay is carried back to the RCA jack on the K2/100 - and be certain that the RCA jack on your KPA100 has its shield contact well soldered to the KPA100 ground. 73, Don W3FPR Bob Evans wrote: I've just installed the KPA100UPKT to bring #4687 up to date. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] any suggestions? cheap qrp xcvr kits
If you're not afraid of SMD: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/4758 KD1JV now has a new ATS-3B with additional features: http://kd1jv.qrpradio.com/ The ATS-3B--the worlds smallest and lightest multi-band CW HF rig. This latest version of the popular AT Sprint CW transceiver now covers 80 through 15 meters, using plug in filter modules (not shown). A single digit LED display has been added for frequency and battery voltage readout. (in addition to Morse annunciation). Over current detection has been added to protect the PA. The transmitter produces 2.5 watts out with just a 9 volt supply--on all bands. Supply voltage can range from as little as 6 volts to a maximum of 12. An improved PA keying circuit ensures consistent rise and fall times of the CW output signal, regardless of supply voltage. Available early September, 2007 for $190.00 I've built both the ATS-2 and ATS-3 and SMD is not difficult if you have a fine point soldering iron, magnifying visor, good lighting, etc. These rigs or ultralight variants are always the Adventure Radio Society's Spartan Sprint winners, usually with a total weight under 3 ounces including battery, key, earphones and of course the rig itself! 73, Bill W4ZV P.S. I find it interesting that Elecraft now says they may someday have SMD kits, which is a change from past statements. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Alignment/Test Part II
JT, No need to wait for the N-Gen for the Bandpass filter alignment - just initially peak the BPF in receive using only band noise (connect your 6 meter antenna or just a piece of wire to the antenna jack center conductor). Once you have the BPF peaked on receive (this is only an initial alignment to get things 'into the ballpark' - peak for maximum antenna noise), then do the Transmit BPF alignment. It is easier to observe the peak during the transmit alignment, and when that is done, it will be correct for both receive and transmit. The N-Gen will come in handy when you are doing the IF filter alignment (CAL FIL) using the Spectrogram display - for that process, a broadband noise source is best - and the N-Gen is a broadband noise generator. 73, Don W3FPR JT Croteau wrote: Thanks to N6TR, N0SS, and W3FPR for their explanations and reassurances. [Elecraft] sierra compared to ?
The recent talk of qrp kits got me doing a web search, and looking at the many kits available, I found the wilderness radio sierra, which I always liked the look of, but never got one. I am wondering how well the RX works, any advantage of using a vfo instead of the dds stuff, like phase noise and spurs? I am sure many here have a sierra or had one, what do you think of the RX? I don't do contests or worry about DX, so I just wonder about general CW work, is it a clean quiet receiver? I like building, I am not real fond of menus and multi push buttons, and the price seems good for a one or two band radio with a real frequency readout. It gets a 5.0 on eham.net! [Elecraft] K3 Shipping Delays
Much has been posted here about this topic. I've also seen (and heard) considerable correspondence from some top operators who have been testing pre-production K3s under some rather torturous contest and QRN conditions. Although I'm not privy to internal communications at Elecraft, I'd bet that this testing has caused some of the fine points of the design to be tweaked. I'd also bet that like any other manufacturer, Elecraft is experiencing delays on deliveries of critical parts. So, while we're anxious to see the finished product on our operating bench, the second sort of delays are to be expected from any mfr who is reasonably picky about what parts they buy and where they buy them, and the first sort of delays will result in a better radio. So cool your jets, and give Wayne and Eric the breathing space to do their jobs. I have a Ten Tec 1340 (4 Watts) and it is a good rig after making several modifications. Add a 10 turn pot for the VFO and Dave K1SWL Frequency Mite audible frequency readout and other simple modifications to improve the transmitter stability and get rid of popping in the received audio during keying all very well documented on the web by Monty N5ESE . Also have a Wilderness Radio NORCAL 40 (2 Watts) which benefits by adding a 10 turn pot and audible frequency readout which costs about $70 more than the the Ten Tec with similar mods. This has a very clean design and is easily upgradable and servicable. It was designed Wayne N6KR one of the founders of Elecraft. It isn't my place to add much data to this, but I think I can make a couple of general observations. I have used this radio now for some 7 weeks now. I didn't even open it up for the first few weeks and thus far have added one component to a board. The stability of the hardware is fantastic. This is the main gate I would think to starting shipping. I believe that mostly it is logistics of getting the first batch all built - integrated and tested. That's a lot of radios to ship at once. There will continue to be lots of work to do with the firmware. There are two different firmware programs - the MCU, which is what controls everything except the DSP firmware. These are split up between two different people and there are already a number of nice to have features that have been judged to be something that can wait until after FCS (first customer ship). So - your K3 will continue to improve after you get it... but what you get out of the box will be better than you probably expected. Why - just this weekend, my DSP noise blanker was totally redesigned and really works well on the electric fence noise. :-) Yours will work this well out of the box. Hope this helps - I can't answer when - but just that the hardware is stable and I believe the right decisions are being made - and no, they aren't waiting until every last feature is included in the firmware - since that can be updated after you get your radio. 73 Tree N6TR K2 S/N 2411 K3 S/N 013 (I think - still no label) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Adjusting L34 with Spectrogram
JT, Turn the AF gain (or the soundcard line-in setting) up a bit until the noise in the passband becomes a bit greater. After that, adjust L34 for the greatest difference between the signal and the noise floor. Expect some difficulty in determining the proper point - the peak S/N ratio is still quite broad. If you do not discern any improvement, just set the slug for the greatest amplitude on the Spectrogram display and be done with it. If you cannot discern the difference in S/N ratio with either your ears or with the Spectrogram display, then the setting that gives the greatest amplitude is the correct one (and it is a broad setting). If your 'best' setting is very far from 1 to 2 turns from the top of the coil, then check things again because something is wrong (most likely a soldering problem). The spike is likely a result of pickup from some local source - check the things in your house as a first course of action. 73, Don W3FPR JT Croteau wrote: Decided to try pre-aligning L34 using Spectrogram. We've just added a document to the K3 FAQ page explaining how antenna inputs are routed to the main and sub receivers. Four possible system configurations are covered: (1) no KAT3 or KXV3; (2) KXV3 only; (3) KAT3 only; and (4) both KAT3 and KXV3. Each configuration has a separate illustration. The FAQ page is at: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3FAQ.htm or you can download the antenna routing file directly: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3_Antenna_Routing.pdf Even if you don't plan to add the subreceiver (KRX3), you may find this information to be of interest. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Any relation? MYCHAEL: Looks like you have finally gotten your own International Day, and a ham radio semi-contest to go with it. More than that, it'll last more than Andy Warhol's 15 minutes. I am s jealous. OK, I fell for the International Talk Like A Pirate Day [we'll forgo the results of that], I'll do 1300 - 1500Z as a toroid. Getting into that shape will be tough for an old fart like me, and my wife has not yet agreed to wind the wire around me [I'm still pleading and explaining the relevance of all this to modern life] but look for me on 7040 +-. 20 doesn't open for us left-coasters right now until the sun is really up, and I'll be out of the house by then. I will be feeding my antenna with a K2/100 S/N 4398 + KAT100 [get that in, it's on topic for the reflector!]. Roundly [with a hole in the middle] yours, I remain Fred [aka Skip] K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2007 CQP Oct 6-7 - www.cqp.org ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 st TOKYO FAIR
Bill Thanks for your post. That is what I want to say. One more comment to all. Do not expect too much for Google's translation !!! 73 de aki, ja1nlx waiting for K3 arrival !!! - Original Message - From: Bill Tippett [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, August 28, 2007 7:49 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 st TOKYO FAIR Boy those Japanese really know how to write a compelling review. I would hope that the translator is not involved in writing the K3 manual. We called their attempt at english Jenglish What a bunch of smarties. Google's translation is by computer and a BETA at that. If you don't like it, write your own translation program...or share your Japanese with us. Google does an amazing job considering it's translating Kanji characters and all done in software. It's an American computer company translating and not a Japanese person, so spare me the snide comments. 73, Bill W4ZV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
