[Elecraft] [K3] K3, P3E, Transverters (Satellites)

2007-10-29 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)

Has anyone thought about a K3-based solution for P3E or the American Eagle?

How would you get to 13cms / 23cms with the K3?

Re: [Elecraft] Elcraft K2 6216, Problem with Voltage Sensor on Control Board

2007-10-29 Thread Don Wilhelm

Richard,

U3B should be easy to test. The voltage at pin 7 should always be the
same as that at pin 5.
Set the P7 jumper to the EXT position and use the internal voltmeter
probe while checking.
Connect the probe to the 5 volt regulator (U5) output pin and monitor
the voltage at U3 pin 5 with your DMM - the DMM should read very close
to 1 volt if the voltage divider (R9 and R10) resistors are correct.
Whatever voltage you have at U3 pin 5 should also be found at U3 pin 7
if U3 is good.
Check again connecting the probe to the 8 volt regulator (U4) output pin
- this time the voltages at U3 pins 5 and 7 should be close to 1.5 volts.

If the voltages at U3 pins 5 and 7 do not match, U3 is bad, but if they
do match, look for the problem somewhere else - like R9 or R10 - check
the soldering of these resistors carefully as well as the soldering of U3.

When I first switched the unit on to test it the Voltmeter and Current display were working fine. However after I built tested the Voltmeter Probe, the Voltmeter display read 23.0, and no matter what voltage I applied, internally or through the probe, the reading did not change. The current readings were fine and I was able to complete the all the tests in Part 1.

I have carried out resistance tests, and all the components and the circuit
board look fine, so I feel that the Voltage Sensor IC U3 may be the problem. I
am hoping the fault would not have got to the microprocessor U6, as all else
appears OK.

Before I remove U3 and request a replacement, has any one any thoughts?

How would you get to 13cms / 23cms with the K3?

For L-band uplink, Down East Microwave
URL:http://www.downeastmicrowave.com has several options available,
including some recent products that work directly from a 28 MHz IF.
They also offer S-band transverters with a 2m IF.

DB6NT-designed transverters are available from http://www.ssbusa.com
or URL:http://www.kuhne-electronic.de/english/transverter.htm .

These are all low-volume producers, so I suspect they would entertain
slight modifications of their designs for the proposed frequencies for
P3E and Eagle, as well as the possibility of using 6m for an IF to
eliminate the need to an intervening 144 MHz transverter.

[Elecraft] US Postal Service Express Mail to UK - rubbish!

2007-10-29 Thread Dave G4AON
Recently I ordered an item from the USA and specified USPS International
Express Mail, I'm sure I've used that service in the past for Elecraft
bits and kits. One memorable occasion resulted in a delivery four days
after placing the order. Sadly, it seems the system has deteriorated as
follows (from USPS tracking):

Attempted Delivery Abroad, October 27, 2007, 9:25 am, GREAT BRITAIN
Out of Foreign Customs, October 26, 2007, 5:11 am, GREAT BRITAIN
Into Foreign Customs, October 23, 2007, 5:33 pm, GREAT BRITAIN

I don't know what attempted delivery abroad on Saturday 27th means, no

One of the problems with gear for 900 MHz and higher is that you really
want the RF deck mounted at the antenna, if possible. A weatherproof
transverter, if you will. Feedlines affordable to most of us have too
much loss. AN alternative is to remote a preamp and power amp, and let
the feedline loss attenuate the Tx output of the shack-based exciter to
the drive level needed by the power amp at the antenna.

With satellites, you often have a situation where you only want/need a
Tx or an Rx converter. L band for satellites in the Amateur Service are
restricted to 1268-1270 MHz, uplink (transmit) only. Until now, S-band
(2.4 GHz) has been downlink (receive) only. So traditional transverters
may not be the most cost effective solution. For VHF/UHF this is not
the case, where 2m and 70cm are used for both up- and downlink and
feedline losses are manageable (even if the antennas aren't!).

Another consideration is full duplex operation for satellites, which
suggests you want different IFs for Tx and Rx. Finally, you probably
want VHF IFs for microwave operation for image rejection if nothing else.

[Elecraft] Question: Over-voltage protection (OVP) for K2, K1

2007-10-29 Thread Alan D. Wilcox

Hello,
As many of you know, I've been pretty active building and repairing
Elecrafts ...

... And recently I had a K2 come in after having a collision with a
runaway power supply. Extensive damage. Most modern supplies have a
protection circuit that drops a short across the supply if the voltage
goes over a set limit, but this was not the case here. A simple external
crowbar probably would have saved this K2 from disaster.

So I built a simple OVP that can be inserted inline with the K2's power.
See http://wilcoxengineering.com/OVP/ for some pictures of the project.

Question: Is a product like this something that folks might find useful
if I were to make the parts (or a mini-kit) available?

Let me know!
Many thanks,

Ken

The package in question isn't from Elecraft. The problem lies with the
USPS Express Mail International service which states on their web site
(and I quote):

Speed 3 - 5 days.

The package has been 12 calendar days, or 8 Monday to Friday working
days so far. There will be tax to pay on the package so I suspect there
may be a letter on the door mat asking me to phone and pay the tax
before they will deliver, adding further delay to an already tedious
process.

I suspect what they mean is 3-5 days to get it into the hands
of the overseas mail system. Beyond that point they have no
control over delays in foreign customs or deliveries.

We send letters and printed material overseas as Global
Priority Mail (7-9 days) and it always gets there on time with
no customs formalities required. Perhaps this was a glitch
with the BPO (or whatever its successor is called now), and not
  with the USPS.

[Elecraft] US Postal Service Express Mail to UK - rubbish!

2007-10-29 Thread David Lankshear
It sounds like UK Customs have their claws into it. That usually adds between
1 and 2 weeks to the delivery. If it's a parcel, you'll get a letter from
Parcel Farce charging you 17.5% VAT on the commodity plus cost of carriage and,
depending on its category, import duty plus £8 handling fee. If it's a small
package, it'll be handled the same way by Royal Snail.

I'm awaiting delivery of a $71 package that will probably cost me an additional
$38.

Sorry to be a potential harbinger of doom and hope it gets cleared soon.

... and my experience is that it isn't half as bad as all that. I
recently ordered two new source driver boards for my Top Ten band
decoders. Dave N3RD scanned the posting document and sent me a copy. It
was posted in PA on Saturday 13 October, sent by US Mail and arrived in
Nottingham on Wednesday 17th.

It seems to me that the major delay in incoming parcel post these days
is the emphasis on actually acting as a business. In the past the local
postperson was required to collect any payment due, so this was hit and
miss depending on whether the individual could be bothered, or whether
they considered they were working for a business or a community service.
Once RM realised just how much revenue they were losing they tightened
up their procedures and costs, hence the system now. So you really can't
fault that.

I guess you get what you pay for. I also recently ordered an Ethernet to
Serial adapter, for remote access to my G1000 rotor controller. It came
by UPS. Whilst the service was high class in that the UPS Depot at East
Midlands Airport rang me to say the item had arrived, they also stung me
for an excessive handling charge as well as import duty. (Would you like
to pay now, sir!) I would certainly prefer the Parcelforce £8 handling
charge and an additional day or so.

Re: [Elecraft] Question: Over-voltage protection (OVP) for K2, K1

2007-10-29 Thread Alan D. Wilcox

Dave,
If I were to do an OVP for a K2/100 ...
1. Different connectors,
2. A circuit breaker (a 20+ A supply would cause serious damage without
a fuse or breaker),

3. Change OVP-12 to the OVP-24 (20A continuous, 30A intermittent),
4. Bigger case, probably metal to act as heat sink (just in case).

I would expect a 20-30A supply to have protection, so the above wouldn't
be necessary. HOWEVER, the supply that inspired the project to start
with was just such a supply, so maybe such an OVP would be a good idea.
Hmmm.

BUT I did notice something: when changing between the three filters the width
of the plot varied very little. I would have expected to see a vastly
different shape between the 800 Hz filter and the 250 Hz filter.

So, do I need to take the screws out anyway?

[Elecraft] RE: K3: Reference Error in KXV3 Manual

2007-10-29 Thread AB7R
Thanks Chuck. Will pass this on to the manual team for correction. It
should reflect in the next revision.

Subject: K3: Reference Error in KXV3 Manual

Page 12 of this manual contains the following in two places near the bottom
of the page:

Error! Reference source not found

I believe the reference should be to Figure 4 on page 9.

[Elecraft] KPA800 / KPA1500: status update?

2007-10-29 Thread Andrey Stoev
I guess this is a question for Wayne and Eric.
I am on the market for a linear amp and I would love to buy an Elecraft amp
instead of Tokyo Hi-Power for instance. I am not in a terrible rush but I would
really like to do it in the next 3 to 6 months. I was wondering if there is any
progress with the KPA 800 and KPA 1500 and what is the rough estimated time of
release for those amps? Any chance for one of those models to out by ... lets
say April - May? Just want to know so I can make a decision what and when to
buy - no sense for me to wait with the amp if the Elecraft models are not very
close to turn from prototype to a real product.
Thanks in advance!!

[Elecraft] Alignment/Test II assistance request

2007-10-29 Thread rcerkon
Need a second opinion with some Align/Test II results.

Item 1: PLL Reference OSC Range. Fref-high = 12100.5 kHz, Fref-low =
12091.0 kHz. Fdiff - 9.5 kHz. The manual says the diff. _must_ be 9.5
- 15 kHz. I'm a little low.

I followed the T/S steps and checked associated components C84, C85,
D19, D17, L31 X1--all are correct.

Item 2: BFO, BFOhigh-freq = 4917.16 kHz, BFOlow=freq = 4912.88 kHz,
Both a smidge higher than the manual spec. 4917 kHz and 4912 kHz
respectively.

Frequency measurements were made with the internal frequency meter,
after calibrating it per the manual with a Radio Shack wide range
frequency meter. Experience building K2s told me to call it good
because they things were so close and press on. But I've been away
from building for 2 years or so, and thought I better get a second
opinion.

FWIW PLL linearization worked just fine, as did Filter/BFO setup.

Item 3: Adjusting L34 for best S/N ratio I could not really notice
much change. L1 L2 seamed to peak OK with a Noise Generator
connected to the antenna jack. But with a few feet of wire connected
to the ANT jack I could _NOT_ receive any signals on 40m. Is 40 that
dead? It might be my QTH, river valley surrounded by low mountains.
I'll have to get access to an XG1 or XG2 and do more trouble shooting.
Anyone have either they would like to loan out or sell?

Back in the day when I had a decent bench and more test equipment
things were a lot easier. Now, after downsizing QTH and test
equipment, doing this stuff on the kitchen table presents some
challenges. :-)
