I'm a tubes guy rather than transistors. There's something quite satisfying
about the glow from a nice big 4/1000-A or similar.

If I had to buy a big amp this morning it would have a nice big tube - for
example from HA8UG - http://web.axelero.hu/amplitec/mypa_eng.html .

My rule for amplifiers - if you can lift it off the ground then it's not big
enough :-)

[Elecraft] Disappointing delays in responses.

2007-11-23 Thread Keith Bainbridge
I ordered my K3 at 06-16 am PDT on 30/4/2007, by fax, receipt is
available on my telecons bill !

I paid half up front and the balance August 29.
I have sent an email to Lisa on monday this week and received no reply
at all.
Now I see people who ordered on May 1st have been notified of their
dispatch.
I've been one of the ones reading the email thinking, c'mon guys be
patient, but now I'm more than a little concerned.
I think its about time we knew when we are going to receive our orders
please.
My friends are laughing at me for paying for something so far in
advance of receiving anything.
I have faith in Elecraft, my K2 is one of the best pieces of gear I've
ever owned, but my faith is wearing thin.

Will the powers that be please keep us informed !

[Elecraft] Computer type headsets with the K3

2007-11-23 Thread Doug Person
On my last order to my favorite computer parts vendor I added an
inexpensive ($9.00) computer-type headset with mic. These turned out to
be somewhat cheaply made - but not bad, with good sound quality and are
reasonably comfortable. I plugged them into the K3, set the appropriate
parameters and they work like a charm. Earphones and mic plugs both
just plug into the jacks in the back. You setup vox gain and antivox,
turn the bias on, adjust your mic gain and you're ready to go. A great
setup for a very minimal investment. Audio reports are good and its
easy to tweak and balance the sound of the mic. I pulled down the bass
and high-end treble and added extra gain in the upper midrange. And the
vox works great - better than any other radio I've tried.

No problem Gary and I'm glad we agree on that :-)

Sorry if I didn't make that clear. To try to clarify this.. the basic
premise is that anything you attach to you or your kit, while you are
building, is bonded to the same point (that's important) and via a 1M ohm
resistor lead.

I also use dissipative tools, like screwdrivers, cutters etc etc, but that
is not really necessary, as long as your body is grounded via a strap.

I repeat, this ground MUST be via a 1M ohm resistor (or higher, but better
to keep all resistances the same).

Re: [Elecraft] K2: AGC Threshold Too Low?

2007-11-23 Thread David Wilburn
Greetings Sarah, welcome to the hobby, and to a great radio. My AGC
measurement was down a bit, not quite as far as yours, but it has been
discussed here that there is some variation, and that it is not critical
at that point. I re-visited my a little later on in the build process,
and the numbers came up some.

Don, W3FPR, has given some good explanations for why this is, I just
don't recall them at the moment.  A quick search of the archive;
http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/maillist.html

Here is one example of what I found;
http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg01791.html

So I don't think your measurement is at a critical level at this time.
Don, or others will likely help with further information. Best of luck
to you, and enjoy the build. It really is a fine radio. 73

The instructions (pg. 48) say to set the RF GAIN control fully

and adjust trimmer R1 for a reading of 3.80 volts.

I did my voltage measurements with my own (cheap) DMM, not the

My concern is that, by adjusting R1, the highest I could get the
voltage to go was 3.59v, so for the moment, that's where it's set.

I measured the voltage on the LM29307-8, and it has 12.23V at the
input, but only 7.53V at the output. The 78M05 has 4.93V at its
 output.

When I rotate the AF GAIN control, I get a range of 4.68V (fully
counter-clockwise) to 3.59V (fully clockwise) on pin 5 of U2.

My power supply is a small benchtop power supply; it's putting out
12.4V, and reports the K2 is drawing about 100mA. When I measure the
input voltage across the K2 input jack, I get the same 12.4V.

All of the previous checks were fine, and the following step, S-Meter
Alignment, seemed to work just fine.

So, my question is, do I have a problem? Should I be concerned?

Re: [Elecraft] K2: AGC Threshold Too Low?

2007-11-23 Thread Don Wilhelm

Sarah,

Congratulations on getting your license and venturing to build your K2.

The AGC Threshold high limit is directly proportional to the 8 volt
regulator actual output - if you follow the circuit you will discover
that that voltage is really the result of a 3 legged resistive voltage
divider. With a full 8 volts out of the regulator, the typical highest
voltage is about 3.85 to 3.9 volts depending on the exact values of the
5% tolerance resistors. Since your 8 volt regulator is near the lower
edge of its tolerance range (actually a bit lower than it should be),
you can set R1 to its full limit and things should work fine.

I would recommend that you replace the regulator since a 5% tolerance
would produce an output between 7.60 and 8.40 volts.

Re: [Elecraft] Customer Service...a defining factor in my order

2007-11-23 Thread Matt Zilmer
Hi Dick,

From my experience, this is a *very busy* time at Elecraft. My own
customer service issues were handled quickly and correctly on both the
K2 and now on the K3.

The problems Elecraft is facing right now don't have as much to do
with customer service - they're more correctly associated with
birthing a champion colt [not that I'm any expert on colt birthing].
Mistakes they make now are going to be very heavily leveraged against
them over a longer term. They're being cautious and being sure of
what they ship. This much is stated in Eric's Shipping Status Page
for the K3.

I monitor this list pretty carefully and keep my postings short and
infrequent [all current evidence to the contrary]. The only problems
Elecraft has had with the K3 so far are two -
a) Shipping on time to the original promise date
b) Being on time with shipping sufficient volumes to keep the hungry
hordes satiated

There appear to be no _major_ technical issues with the transceiver
from posting I've read on the list. This doesn't mean there aren't
any at all, but it's indicative.

There were supplier issues that delayed them from July to late
October. At volumes such as are expected for the K3, even when it's
in mass production, these always happen. At Magellan, we have them
all the time with new products. So does everyone else. An Magellan
ships unit volumes per year in the millions. We just start slow

Shipping sufficient volume is quickly beoming a non-issue. They're
improving their processes, adding brains and hands, and moving product
at a pace acclerated from the early rate. There are reasons (I'm
sure) that Elecraft spokespeople are careful about their statements on
the web page and reflector - but most of these will be concerned with
remaining competitive and keeping secrets they must.

Now - the bright side. My continuing impression of Elecraft customer
service and support remains very similar to that of white blood cells.
This is good - it's the type of system that you can't beat or at least
no one has come up with anything better.

Elecraft is a small company, is customer-oriented, and has no layered
bureaucracy to slow it down. If policy is made, I suspect it's
between the principals and their communications skills are top rate.
They don't have to go to a higher authority. They're it.

I bought one of the early K3 units from the first production run. I
came across a number of problems. Each and every one was handled in
its entirely in only a few hours. Most of them were my fault, a few
were theirs. I believe all of the Elecraft problems I found have been
fixed, either in firmware loads or in the manual.

Somehow, they couldn't fix me remotely. RTFM is a real good idea.
Each and every word in the manual means something and should be
understood and followed carefully.

BTW, I'm not affiliated with and do not work for Elecraft.

73 Good Luck with your decision,

[Elecraft] Customer Service...a defining factor in my order

2007-11-23 Thread Dick Roth

I've been reading the give and take on the stress of waiting for delivery.

I placed my order for a K3 yesterday, depending on a low-stress
transaction. The constant flow of email messaging between the Elecraft
prime movers and the customer community is refreshing. I speak with the
knowledge of the opposite pole of experience: customer dis-service as I
suffered in a work situation. In a nut shell, I'm just at the end of a
difficult project to replace the Land Mobile Radio system of a security
operation; this the result of NTIA and DoD mandates to conserve
spectrum and provide for a common air interface and digital
modulation. Let us just say that the products purchased were Brand M.
Promises for delivery updates were broken almost daily, with
maintenance of our project time line becoming a worthless exercise.
Sometimes, there was no talking with the Big M. They hid behind layers
of voice mail fences and constantly left us hanging.

In contrast, the free flow of information, even disappointing info, is
almost constant within our Elecraft customer community and between it
and Elecraft. This constructively communicative culture gives me the
confidence to purchase the best radio I ever hope to own.

[Elecraft] Tuning knob revisit (Gil WA5YKK)

2007-11-23 Thread Gil Gibbs
To those who dare - I'm in the middle of a mess, attempting to rework my
whole QTH shack upstairs in the big house, and in so doing, I enjoy
firing up the Icom 756 PRO I have alongside the K2 which is now doing a
better job of SWL than the Icom. The only real problem I run into is
that the Icom tuning knob has some weight to it, along with a spinner
dimple, which makes it easier to tune, and faster than the K2. I'm
wondering if it makes any sense to attempt to find an FT-900 knob, or
just figure out a way to add some weight to the k2 knob? And, yes, I've
already looked over the Yaesu website, no joy at this point.

My prime problem is that I find it to be a little disconcerting to tune
the heater (the Icom is a room heater!), faster and sometimes easier to
find a frequency and/or station than the K2 does, so just regard me as
spoiled at this point. If anyone has any ideas about how to find a
speed demon knob, let me know, since I'd really like to have the K2
become as physically able as the Jap rig is! Presently, it's
astounding that I've soldered together a rig that is at least equal to,
or outperforms a commercially-made rig, with a fraction of the amperage
consumption. (Eventually, I see the day when my whole ham rig situation
will be dying Kachina, fading Icom, and full steam Elecraft - and
probably go SK for good, with the K2 or K3 going strong, still!)

Tnx, 73's, enjoy Xmas coming up!

Hi and welcome!

It doesn't happen too often, but have you checked the accuracy of your
cheap DMM? If you don't have anything to compare it with, you can get an
idea of its condition by measuring the voltage across a fresh alkaline
battery. It should read about 1.57 and 1.58 VDC.

Re: [Elecraft] I didn't realize what you meant (was RE: WARNING! WARNING! WAR...

2007-11-23 Thread Don Wilhelm

Al,

AFAIK, you are correct - the large value resistor is primarily there to
protect the person wearing the wrist strap.

However, I do not like to do any electronic or electrical work on a
directly grounded and conductive surface - period. IMHO, there is too
much of a chance to create a short to ground with an open lead or an
accidentally placed tool in contact with a conductive work surface.
Even though we usually do not work on high voltage equipment frequently
anymore (which is where those practices originated), it is still good
practice since low voltage power (in particular batteries) can produce a
lot of damage from high current levels - I have seen several cases of
molten metal flying around as a result of a shorted low voltage/high
current source. Think about it a bit - there is a good (and similar)
reason for the instruction to ALWAYS remove the grounded lead from an
automotive battery first (even if it seems non-intuitive at first) - if
one terminal is left grounded, the tool removing the 'hot' terminal can
short to the chassis and cause much harm and injury. Don't think that
small batteries are harmless either - I once observed a 12 volt pack of
AA sized NiCAD batteries melt wire and burst when subjected to a direct
short - it was a destructive test in a controlled lab environment, but
it convinced me that such things are not harmless.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: AGC Threshold Too Low?

2007-11-23 Thread Sarah K
Thanks to everyone who replied! Wow, help sure comes in a hurry on
this list!

The general consensus appears to be that I'm ok for the time being
(yay!), so I'm going to go ahead and move on.

I did test with the internal voltmeter as well, and it reports 3.5V.

Special thanks to VE3TIX who asked if my DMM batteries are fresh...
no, they weren't! I replaced the battery and the display is a lot
easier to read now, thanks! Sadly, it still reports 3.59V.

Although I am starting to wonder about the general advisability of
relying on a meter that came free with my oscilloscope. :-)

Also, in the process of fiddling with things, I discovered that my
little bench power supply is very noisy! I was using my Yaesu VX-7R
as an ad-hoc RF probe; K4DGW sent me a link to a message from Don
Wilhelm in the list archives which got me thinking about noise, so I
grabbed the Yaesu to try to use as an RF probe, and discovered lots
of noise on 7MHz, 10MHz, and probably everywhere else (!), which went
away completely when I switched off the power supply! I rigged a
bunch of D batteries for 12V and powered the K2 with that instead; it
worked fine, the noise went away, but the AGC reading still wouldn't
go over 3.59v.

But I think I'm going to need a power supply... any recommendations?
I can probably try to stop by HRO tomorrow.

Oh, and if anyone has a recommendation for a high quality but fairly
inexpensive DMM, I'd be interested to hear about that too...

Thanks again everyone,

Sarah AF6FH

I'm having a little issue with setting the AGC Threshold.

The instructions (pg. 48) say to set the RF GAIN control fully
clockwise, measure the voltage on pin 5 of U2 on the control board,
and adjust trimmer R1 for a reading of 3.80 volts.

I did my voltage measurements with my own (cheap) DMM, not the
internal voltmeter.

Thanks,

Sarah AF6FH

RE: [Elecraft] K3 - Possible Show Stoppers

2007-11-23 Thread Craig Rairdin
What fan noise? During long runs with lots of transmitting during SS I had
to stick my hand behind the radio to see if the fans were on. They were, and
the top of the radio stayed cool. You couldn't hear them at all.

I can't answer your question about key-up spikes, but my dipole ends 25'
directly above my head and I haven't noticed any effects of RF in the
transmitted audio. I'm only running 100W so that may not mean anything.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - Possible Show Stoppers

I am a SSB rag-chew operator and very interested in the K3. Have had many of
the rigs on the market in the last few years and like the features of the
K3. I have 3 questions that may be show stoppers for me.

1. Fan noise: How loud are the fans, what rig do they compare to. In
a long SSB transmission which of the 4 speeds will be engaged? The fan noise
in some rigs is not acceptable to me, like the Icom 706 or
Yaesu Mark-V 200 watt version. A lot of rigs are ok, like the IC-756 PRO,
TS-870, IC-775 or Mark-V Field.

2. RF in Transmitted Audio: My shack is not in an ideal location, it
is on a second floor with my beam antenna over my head, so sometimes
I have issues with RF getting into the transmitted audio. Some
radios work fine (with some work) like Icom Yaesu, and some have
problems like Ten-Tec. With this said, has anyone tried the K3 in a
high RF environment?

3. SSB Transmit Key-up Spikes: Some solid-state amps do not like key-
up spikes. An example, I have owned two Yaesu FT-920s and my solid-
state amp would not tolerate the key-up spikes in them.

Thanks for your answers,

Joe N9VX

I'm a tubes guy rather than transistors. There's something quite

If I had to buy a big amp this morning it would have a nice big tube - for

My rule for amplifiers - if you can lift it off the ground then it's not
big enough :-)

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 R 19 R20 question

2007-11-23 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy

Werner,

The resistors might have different characteristics even though their ohmic
value is the same and they might look to be identical. Some years ago it was
reported on the List that the KPA100's output was low on some bands, and the
cause was believed to be that the manufacturer of R19 and R20 had switched
to supplying resistors that exhibited significant inductance. I believe that
a mod kit was subsequently released which included 'non-inductive' versions
of R19 and R20. It is possible that you have some of both types in your
collection.

Unless you have the test equipment which is capable of measuring the
inductance of a small coil (nH) shunted by a 3.6 ohm resistor, you could
measure the series resonant frequency of each 'resistor' and a capacitor,
always using the same capacitor, my guess is that a 3300 pF capacitor would
be a suitable value for HF resonance. Obviously those resistors which are
'inductive' would resonate at a lower frequency than those resistors which
are supposedly not. A crude measurement but adequate for the purpose I would
think.

It is possible to deal with the resistors already installed without removing
them, but very much easier to remove them - but ONLY if you are having power
output problems with your KPA100 on some bands!! The truth of the matter is
that all of the six 2w resistors are involved in the feedback networks and
are suspects in any power 'droop' problem, and you have to isolate each part
when doing on-board measurements. My KPA100 purchased in 2003 came with
inductive resistors, but the gods were kind and its 'power droop' occurs
outside of the ham bands.

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA100 R 19 R20 question

while I am waiting for a replacement of J4 from Scott, I am looking at the
parts left after finishing the KPA100. I can see 2 pairs of R19 R20
resistors

in the box. They look identical to those on the board. I had the KPA100
upgrade kit, so 1 pair is clear, there must have been another pair packed
to

my KPA100 in double quantity. The reason was probably a replacement for
problems with the formal type of resistor.
Now my question: when sorting the parts, I was not aware of this possible
problem and maybe mixed the different parts, so I am not sure if I built
in the
correct resistor. From looking at them I cannot tell any difference. They
look
exactly the same. Can I find a difference whith any measurement to
identify

if I have by accident built in the wrong pair?

[Elecraft] SPE/ACOM and other microprocessor type amps

2007-11-23 Thread cx7tt

Hello,
I too have followed the story of SPE and Tokyo Hypower amps with
interest. I have been the owner of an ACOM 1000 for about 3 years now
and had great service until...last Sept, the amp was sitting in
standby mode waiting for 3B7 to show up on 20m; xyl and I watching
news in next room and very loud, KAPOW from shack. I found the 1000
lights flashing and error code in the window. Tried a reset and another
extremely loud pop. I contacted Will at ACOM via Skype and he said to
send him all the lines of error code. There were about 7 lines of such.
Well, it turns out that even with the code, they cannot decipher what
happened and now the amp has to be sent to the US for service. From CX
that means at least $100 in overweight baggage on the airline (amp goes
in pelican case) then Fedex from MIA to factory and back, then another
frequent flyer ride to CX. This is on top on any repair bill. So, now my
favorite amp is my trusty 30L-1 which I can fix myself. If one lives in
the US or has easy (cheap) access to local distributor then I would
certainly take hard look at the SPE, it looks like a real winner, but
for me, no more microprocessor controlled amps. My next one will be
probably be a Command Tech or QRO HF-2500. Just some thoughts from
someone who lives outside the US, aint' easy being dx, huh?

RE: [Elecraft] Problem to save my K3 configuration

2007-11-23 Thread dj7mgq
Hi Thomas,

glad to hear that is now working.

You are right... different computer same USB = serial converter and it is
 working.

I had problems with an older version of the Elecraft firmware loader, which
turned out not to be the application but the USB/RS232 drivers.

I had used an other USB/RS232 interface with my Apple Power Book (dual boot
using Boot Camp Windows XP Professional) a few months ago, and the old and new
USB to serial drivers conflicted, which took a while to figure out. Everything
looked OK in the device manager, for example, but programs like HyperTerminal
(Microsoft) failed when using the pseudo COM port.

It might be worth while to remove all the USB to Serial drivers on the computer
which is causing problems, reboot, and then do a fresh install of the drivers
for your adapter (if possible check the Internet for any updates), before
inserting the USB to RS 232 adapter. Also the standard installer for USB drivers
in Windows is not the best, so you may have better results with the installer
software which came with the adapter.

Just a thought...

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the reply and especially for the config file.

My computer configuration looks quite similar to yours.

I was able to write your configuration into my K3 !!!
Only two (or three...) warnings about an illegal value... maybe my K3 has
not the same modules...

After that i tried to backup the configuration which failed again.

I don't have any idea what my problem is.
Maybe i should check it with a different computer (with a RS232 interface)
to be shure it's not a problem with my K3.

Hi Thomas,

I'm using the same rev of the Downloader and just saved my K3's config

to you.

The only way I might be able to help you is to tell you the serial port
setup here, o/s, etc. You're right - it doesn't sound like an interface
problem. However it might be your hw platform, o/s, or even a device
driver.

K3: s/n 24; MCU 1.41, DSP 1.39
COM Port: 4, 4800 BPS
COM port is running via USBSER.SYS on a Keyspan USA-19HS USB-to-serial

If I were you, I'd reboot the computer and not load any applications, then
retry the config save.

In a small portsniffer output i can see that the response from the K3

Inside the stored file you can find *error reading EEPROM at

Based on the fact that my previous firmware upgrades were successful i

Re: [Elecraft] Tuning knob revisit (Gil WA5YKK)

Gil,

The FT-900 knob is no longer available. You can add an FT-900 (or ft100
or FT847) tire to your stock K2 knob and add the Elecraft finger dimple
too. The stock K2 knob has adequate weight if the drag is adjusted
properly, but the sharp edge is a problem for me - the rubber tire helps
dramatically - I don't care for the finger dimple, but many folks seem
to like them.

Re: [Elecraft] ESD recommendation

2007-11-23 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Yes you do have to go to the effort of ESD projection - without it, you may
just get lucky and not blow a component - but then you've just waited months
for your K3 and why risk it? ESD stuff (like everything else) over in the US
is so damn cheap anyway.

I can't suggest where to buy - Radio Shack perhaps - just checked

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102871cp=sr=1origk
w=statickw=staticparentPage=search

Good God , that's $25 - £12 pounds at current rate - I paid £25 pounds just
for an ESD mat! I might just move to US.

You need
 * an ESD mat - to place parts on etc while you build
 * a ESD wrist strap - to ensure you aren't developing a charge
 * a ESD wire - to connect the rig chassis to your bonding point
(some may say this isn't absolutely necessary)

Do NOT skimp and I'd say buy rather than make - if you do make, it is VERY
important to have a 1M ohm resistor in series with the wrist strap - in
fact , all the commercial ESD stuff has a 1M ohm resistor in the lines.
This doesn't stop it bleeding of a static charge, but it does stop you
getting 110v across your chest by accident and becoming a SK before you've
put the K3 together.

All the lines must run to one bounding point which is earthed - the mains
supply earth is ok, even the one in the plug, it doesn't need to be an RF
earth. Do check you mains earth is good, but then that's standard safety
anyway. You can buy mains plug ESB bonding plugs.

If you have a soldering iron (not required for K3) and you using it on
components - a K2 for instance, do check it has an earthed tip and try to
use same socket or plug for you bonding point.

I modified my Antex temp controlled iron case and added 4 banana sockets to
it, all bonded to the incoming mails lead.

[Elecraft] ESD recommendation

2007-11-23 Thread Dave G4AON
You must use anti-static precautions. It's foolish to assemble a $2500
radio only to damage it for the sake of perhaps $25 worth of anti-static
products. Mats and wrist straps must be tested for continuity before
use, a pin through the mat will usually give a good enough connection
for a multi-meter. I used an anti-static bench mat approx 500mm x 350mm
and a wrist strap. Both were bought in 2001 from a UK mail order company
when I assembled by K2, cost from memory somewhere in the region of $30.

You need some good screwdrivers and plenty of light, one slip and you
could cause costly damage surface mounted components...

Werner,

If they all look the same, they are all good. The old inductive
resistors had a light-blue body, the new ones have a red-brown body color.

I have mentioned many times that body color is not a good means of
identifying components, but for KPA100 R19 and R20, it is good for now -
if Elecraft changes the manufacturer of those parts, then the body color
is likely to change, but that has not happened yet with those parts.
You have some spares (but you will not likely need them)

[Elecraft] K3 variable roofing filters

2007-11-23 Thread Paul

One of the variable-passband filters we've been considering is one
for SSB, with a range of about 1.4 to 2.2 kHz. It would have 5 poles
rather than 8, but I'm sure it would work well in combination with
the I.F. DSP. The MCU would automatically dial in the crystal filter
bandwidth to match the DSP.

This would be a slot-saver for those want multiple SSB RX
bandwidths. Once the CW variable-passband filter was also ready, you
might have:

   FL1 6.0 kHz
   FL2 2.7 or 2.8 kHz
FL3 1.4-2.2 kHz (SSB variable passband crystal filter)
FL4 0.4-0.8 kHz (CW variable passband crystal filter)
   FL5 200 Hz

Wayne,

Can you give me a rough projected price range that these two variable
roofing filters might sell for so that I can decide whether to buy
fixed filters now or wait for the variables...

73,

Paul

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! (was [Elecraft] ESD recommendation)

All,

YOU ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY SHOULD NOT GROUND THE CHASSIS while assembling

your K3 or anything else that has ESD sensitive components! Doing so would
defeat the entire purpose of the ESD mat, which is to gently, safely, and
gradually dissipate a charge so that it doesn't cause damage. If you
directly ground the chassis and you or someone else were to accidentally
touch the rig in a vulnerable spot (while not wearing a wrist strap), then
the resulting surge discharging that person's charge to ground through the
rig's vulnerable circuitry would most certainly fry something!

While your rig is only contacting your ESD mat via an insulator such as
its rubber feet or a painted surface, it will build up a charge of its own.

This is perfectly okay provided the eventual discharge paths for such a
charge are either (gradually) via the mat to ground, or (gradually) through
you via your wrist strap to ground.

BTW, ESD mats should routinely be cleaned with an appropriate product,
because otherwise the buildup of contaminants (such as oils from your skin
and rosin splashes) will defeat the mat's dissipative/conductive properties.

DO NOT USE A HOME REMEDY (SUCH AS RUBBING ALCOHOL) TO CLEAN YOUR MAT AS
THAT WILL ALSO AFFECT YOUR MAT'S PERFORMANCE!

FYI, I work in an Aerospace manufacturing facility where I routinely
handle individual circuit cards that cost between $10,000 and $15,000. The
above comments are derived from the mandatory training I receive at this
facility.

A quick Google of ESD yielded 12,800,000 hits, while a search for the
entire phrase esd mat cleaner yielded 230 hits, so there's clearly a
wealth of info on this subject available online.

Congrats, and welcome!

I did my voltage measurements with my own (cheap) DMM, not the

Maybe a silly question, but is the DMM's batteries fresh? If it has
the half-dead cheap old batteries that it came with, the reading may
be off a bit too much.

A sanity check of comparing the measurement to ones done using the
internal voltmeter could help detect if that is the problem if you
don't have a fresh battery on hand.

I measured the voltage on the LM29307-8, and it has 12.23V at the
input, but only 7.53V at the output. The 78M05 has 4.93V at its
 output.

I would expect closer to 8V out of the LM2930T-8 but it is with spec
(7.5-8.5V from the LM2930 datasheet), and the input voltage is fine
(should only need 8.6 or 9V input to work correctly.

[Elecraft] K3 - Possible Show Stoppers

2007-11-23 Thread Joe

I am a SSB rag-chew operator and very interested in the K3. Have had many of
the rigs on the market in the last few years and like the features of the K3. I
have 3 questions that may be show stoppers for me.

1. Fan noise: How loud are the fans, what rig do they compare to. In
a long SSB transmission which of the 4 speeds will be engaged? The fan noise in
some rigs is not acceptable to me, like the Icom 706 or
Yaesu Mark-V 200 watt version.

Joe N9VX

I also use dissipative tools, like screwdrivers, cutters etc etc, but that

I repeat, this ground MUST be via a 1M ohm resistor (or higher, but better
to keep all resistances the same).

after 40 years in the industry working with the most sensitive of
semiconductor devices, the only requirement for a series resistance that I've
seen used
is in the devices like a wrist strap that were attached to the operators
body. The purpose being to protect them from possible contact with power
systems
that could place the operator in the HV ground path. The 500K or larger
resistor was usually adequate to provide a non-lethal warning of somethin
amiss.
I don't disagree that a big resistor to ground will dissipate a static
charge, but most of us would prefer a total ground on the chassis. Otherwise,
as I
understand it, you still run the risk of setting up a voltage differential
that could damage parts. The reasoning is that a static charge will dissipate,
being of limited source. But an AC voltage delta between the tip of an Iron
and an earth ground could be several volts, depending on the ground point and
power system setup. I've seen as much as 40 volts in normal household wiring.
The addition of a high value resistance in that circuit could raise the
voltage substatially, AND it is a non dissipative source that could fry more
than
a small semi.

The rule I have always applied at home and industrially is:
1) use isolation transformer where possible,
2) use a GFCI protected circuit,
3) establish a common ground point that has the best possible path back to
the house ground.( That is usually at the service entrance and should be tested
to make sure it works )
4) use a ground tester to make sure the ground is not open at the outlet.
(Testers are cheap and available in most hardware stores) .
5) Make sure the grounds from common point to work surface and chassis are
firmly connected - alligator clips always pop off.
6) Wear your wrist strap and avoid synthetic or wool clothing.
7) last and very important - always use an ohmmeter to test the wrist strap
and other ground jumpers to make sure they are working.

A lot of good hardware can be damaged by an open ground wire. A good OP can
be hurt by a bad wrist strap. With the constant flexing of the wrist
cables, etc, the wires will break internally and not be noticed, there's no
antenna
or speaker attached to it to tell you something's wrong.

I've done a lot of residential testing in the course of helping run an RFI
committee for the local club. We have found many RFI cases caused by bad
grounds

In home's I've visited over 30 years, I've found about 1 in 10 homes is
poorly grounded at the service entrance, and about 1 in 10 has open grounds on
outlets. Many result from electrical wiring done by the homeowner without the
help of a licensed electrician or city inspector.

Judging from the Hams I have met over the years, the SKs I have known, and a
lot of the traffic I see on these lists, I have come to the opinion we have
many in our midst to with disputable sense of values is some areas. If you
can't afford a little coin on Ohmmeters, new wrist straps, GFCIs and a visit
from the power company (usually free), you probably don't have adequate
insurance to be messing with this stuff. n This isn't where you want to play on
 the
cheap.
