[Elecraft] Portable CW paddles for K2?

2008-04-25 Thread TF3KX

My K2 #6425 is now up and running, and I need good, light/small portable
iambic paddles for the upcoming summer trips. Are there any good
recommendations?

Candidates I have been looking at include:
- Palm Mini Paddles (http://www.morsex.com/palm)
- Paddlette PK1 (http://www.paddlette.com/pkproduct.htm)
- Paddlette BP (http://www.paddlette.com/bpproduct.htm)

Does anyone have experience, or even comparison on these or others that
would be suitable for portable operation? My preference for feel is that
the I prefer harder/metallic touch when making contact over softer
touch, that I have found with some paddles.

There should be no differince in construction or tuning. The only question
would be if the NMC MARS freq's are within the capabilities of the K2. It
will tune slightly out of band but not much...
If you want, I can check mine into a dummy load and report back to you.

Re: [Elecraft] Portable CW paddles for K2?

2008-04-25 Thread John W2XS

I like the Paddlette paddles for portable use with the K2. At home, I use
the Elecraft HexKey and a set of Brown Brothers BTL-A paddles. The
Paddlettes are similar in design to the Brown Brothers and have a solid feel
to them. The newer Paddlettes have stiffer arms than the old ones which is
a significant improvement. There is no vertical movement of the arms which
helps to keep the solid feel. I used the Palm only once and it felt a
touch spongy to me, but it may have been the way that that particular unit
was adjusted. Surprisingly, the K9LU Bulldog paddles feel pretty good too. I
did not like the Whiterook or MFJ portable paddles. I also have the Black
Widow and Scorpion paddles and use them on occasion, but prefer the others.

(IMHO, of course)

I think that is by design that it tunes at 5 watts to get a good matchso it
can take the 100 watts into a properly tuned match. I think the tuner would
have an issue at 100 watts at 4:1. But it doesn't have an issue a 5 watts.

If you go to XMIT.after you run the tunerthen you will see the 100
watts output.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 vs. K2/100

2008-04-25 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
Hi Brian,

As Don stated, if you already have the KIO2, KAT2 and battery options for
your K2, then externalizing the KPA100 and KAT100 in an EC2 enclosure makes
good sense and is very easy to do. I have my K2 setup in this configuration
and it is really easy for me to go from a base station setup to portable by
simple unplugging a couple of cables.

In my case, I had a K2/100 setup and then decided to split the KPA100 and
KAT100 out, so I had to purchase the additional KIO2 card. It makes for a
really clean setup in that you use the same AuxIO cable that was assembled
with the KAT100 and route it from the KIO2 connector to one of the AuxIO
connectors for the KPA100 or KAT100. The routing of the AuxIO signals
between the KPA100 and KAT100 are handled internally in the EC2 enclosure.
Lyle, KK7P, has a nice webpage describing the split-out process:
http://www.kk7p.com/k2kpa100.html The bottom of the page describes process
using the KIO2 in the basic K2. The top of the page shows how you can do it
without the KIO2. Personally, it seems much cleaner with the KIO2 module.

And if this isn't your cup of tea, I've been told by many that it is only a
matter of minutes to change out the top covers changing from a K2/100 to a
QRP K2. Since the KAT2 and KIO2 modules (and the internal battery option)
reside in the top cover, it is simply a matter of exchanging top covers and
plugging in the appropriate cables.

Either method is pretty simple and is a tribute to Elecraft for not only a
fine modular design, but for the mechanics as well. The external
KPA100/KAT100 would only require unplugging a couple of cables as opposed to
swapping top covers which would require a screwdriver and switching out a
couple cables.

If you have any questions regarding the external EC2 method, don't hesitate
to ask me offline. Sounds like you have a great project going there with
your kids.

73,
Dave W8FGU

We are currently building the KPA-100 for our K2 at the school. I
would like to hear from others who have incorporated the KPA100 into
the K2 (K2/100) vs. keeping the KPA100 external and leaving the K2 as
a QRP rig. I am waffling on the value of the K2 as a portable QRP rig,
probably with the integral KAT2 and battery pack, and an external amp
for base operation, and integrating the amp into the K2 and operating
 with an external tuner.

[Elecraft] K3 w/microHam w/HRD?

2008-04-25 Thread cx7tt

Hola,
Need some help setting up the K3 with microKeyer and HRD. I have the K3
cable (from microHam) going to the MK and then have the Mic cable going
to the mic input on the laptop; the soundcard 'out' on the MK goes to
the headphone jack on the laptop. I have the Com ports configured
according to the MK guide. Com 1 = K3; Com 2=FSK (ptt checked); Com4=CW;
Com5=Control (for Win-Test); Com 7= Winkey; Com 8= PTT. I have tested
this configuration and it works FB with N1MM and WinTest on SSB and CW.
For everyday use and logging, I use HRD. HRD recognizes the K3 with freq
readouts and seems to work OK. The problem I have is with the Digital
Master 780. I do not get any signals on the waterfall or monitor. I have
selected the laptop's sound card and still nothing. Even more baffling
is when I 'click' on 'CQ' the computer sends the characters but the K3
only keys up with a steady tone, telling me that the characters are NOT
getting to the K3 even though the PTT has activated xmit. I have tried
using Rtty, BPSK and keyboard CW; none seem to work. I went to the FAQs
and came up with the following for 'No sigs':

No Signals
If you do not see any signals in the waterfall then follow the steps below:

Soundcard
Make sure you have selected the correct soundcard. To select the
soundcard wither:

From the Tools menu select Program Options, then the Soundcard page, or
From the View menu select Soundcard, then press Options.
Make sure the correct soundcard is selected along with the input source.
For some soundcards such as the M-Audio Delta 44 and SignaLink USB you
will not see a Source. Do not worry - if a source is not displayed this
is because there is only one input source and no way of adjusting the
input level, it is fixed.

Set the default sample rate to 48 kHz - if not supported DM780 falls
back to 8 kHz.

Changes are applied immediately, look in the Logfile for any errors. If
the soundcard can be started correctly you will see text similar to:

09:21:35 Sound Thread: *** Start Input ***
09:21:35 Sound Thread: Opening Creative Sound Blaster PCI (device ID 2)
09:21:35 Sound Thread: Frequency .: 48kHz
09:21:35 Sound Thread: Buffer size ...: 24576
09:21:35 Sound Thread: Oversampling ..: On

*/And 'yes' I did get the above Logfile.../.
*

If you see text similar to the above then you have opened the soundcard
for receive. If you still do not see any signals in the waterfall:

Look at the soundcard, identify the input source where you have
connected your interface. This will usually be Line In (it is better the
use Line In rather than Microphone as Line In will have a flat frequency
response).
In the Soundcard pane (select Soundcard from the View menu) select (*)
RX at the bottom of the pane and make sure that the input source is
selected - look at the Select button at the top of the pane - this will
be depressed.
The input source level is adjusted with the slider - make sure this is
not set to zero.
The Signal Level indicator will show a value greater than zero. You
don't need a very strong signal, pretty well anything will do, a value
of just 20 is absolutely fine.
If the input source is selected, the input slider and the signal level
stays at zero then you are not supplying a signal to the soundcard. Try
connecting a microphone or some headphone to the input connector on the
soundcard. If this produces some noise on the waterfall - anything -
then the problem is the interface between the PC and radio.

/*Tried all of this...moving cable from mic on back of MK to Soundcard
IN. Still no signals nor xmit, other than keying the K3 in RTTY or BPSK.*/

I do not think there is anything wrong with the MK as I used it
previously with O II and MMTTY. I have spent about 6 hours fussing with
this and going on line to read HRD/MK guides and K3 manual.

Is there any suggestions on what maybe I have missed?

Tnx 73

RE: [Elecraft] simple iambic paddles

2008-04-25 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Yes, I wasn't thinking about it, Eric: they are already set up to operate an
Iambic keyer.

Perhaps dual lever is a more accurate description, but I see them most
commonly referred to as Iambic paddles since that's the type of keyer they
were originally designed to operate.

Since Iambic keyers have become the norm, the simpler style of
single-action paddles that cannot support the squeeze action required by
Iambic keyers are becoming less common. At one time they dominated the
paddle business, but they are still around. Here's one example:

Not sure what you mean by that. These paddles work just like my other dual
lever paddles. The term iambic paddle is really a misnomer. Iambic refer's
to the keyer, not the paddles.

Well, actually, those clever paper clip paddles will only operate iambic

piece to become 2 pieces.

Might produce some interesting results if there's significant RF around when

[Elecraft] Issue with K3 and Ham Radio Deluxe

2008-04-25 Thread Mike Scott
I have been using a beta version of Ham Radio Deluxe with my K3 using a real
serial interface (no USB conversion dongle).

I enjoy being able to click on DX spots and have the radio automatically
switch bands and frequencies to the spot.

Something strange though, after a session of looking at the spots I have to
power cycle the K3 in order for SSB transmit audio to be intelligible. I had
one report that my audio was so narrow that it could not be understood, this
was to a local with 20 over S9 signal. My suspicion is that I was
transmitting through the 500 Hz CW filter. I don't really know. I formed
this opinion because I brought up the filter management utility and reset
the SSB transmit mode to the 2.7 KHz filter. It was there originally but
when I moved it to the 6 KHz filter and then moved it back to the 2.7 KHz
filter the radio performed normally from that point. Today I had the same
problem after cycling through some spots and I power cycled the K3 and the
radio then performed normally at that point.

Nothing changes in the Rx audio path when this issue comes up.

I couldn't hazard a guess if this is a K3 issue or a HRD issue. However I
remember reading a post here where someone after making changes to
configuration settings that the radio needed to be power cycled for the
changes to take. This is why I tried the power cycle approach today.

Perhaps I cycled through the spots too quickly (I was pretty fast) and the
K3 doesn't have enough time to change states before the next command comes
in and the K3 ends up in a confused state. Okay, I am hazarding guesses now.

I agree with John, there is no bigger mistake than shying away because of
fear or worries.
I think there is a cycle to this as in life, you start out a bit rough, get
refined then senility hits and then who cares!
Really, there are more great operators that will be more than willing to
work with you and before you know it you will be one of the guy's that help
others.

Probably not a problem in modern solid-state rigs (and an electronic
keyer would be used in any case). However, that might not be a good
idea for a hand key in some cases :^)

I was thinking the same approach could be used for a single-paddle
design by placing the moving part in the center of the loop.

RE: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-25 Thread NZ8J
Frank,

One of the biggest mistakes I've seen over the years is new operators
trying to send too fast, in other words much faster than you can
comfortably copy. Most cw operators will try to answer a CQ at (or
close to) the speed at which it is sent. If you try to send too fast the
other op will most likely answer at that speed which, if it is faster
than you can comfortably copy will make for an uneasy qso on your part
and tend to make you want to cut it a short, thereby depriving yourself
and the other op an opportunity to have a nice ragchew..

Just my 2 cents..

73 and welcome to CW, I hope you find it enjoyable and make it a
favorite mode of operation

[Elecraft] CW mistakes

2008-04-25 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Well, the biggest mistake I made as a beginner was not knowing all of
the usual cw abbreviations. I thought my copying ability was
lousy...it wasn't, I just didn't recognize those cw shortcuts.

The one that threw me most often was ES (back in Feb 1966) until my
elmer stopped by to watch me copy. I apologized for doing a lousy job
and he laughed and explained it all to me. I was good at cw, but
lousy at comprehending what I was writing down.

The other big mistake back then was starting to send before completely
throwing the knife switch...but that's doesn't apply any more. LOL

RE: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-25 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
That's not always possible, which is why I consider it the mark of a good
operator to tune around the frequency after calling CQ.

The numbers are not great compared to the other rigs, but there are a
significant number of crystal controlled rigs out there: solid state and
tube type.

Failure to zero-beat when answering a call. This is one that many
veteran's also fail on. Once you get the hang of it, you can easily and
quickly get within 10 cycles of the other station.

Believe me, if it were ready for release, it would be released!

Our testing has revealed a couple of problems that aren't yet solved to
our satisfaction. We thought it better to delay a little longer and
provide better firmware.

We don't take the position that every customer wants to be a field

I won't make a prediction as to when the code will be released, but you
can be certain we want to get it out as soon as possible.

And we certainly appreciate everyone's patience while we strive to make
this radio even better.

RE: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-25 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Yep, there are no mistakes bigger than:

1) Being afraid to get on.

2) Letting a self-important bad operator discourage you because he/she can't
or won't QRS to your speed or tells you that you don't have the skills to
get on CW, or to operate on a specific band. (I worked a guy who told me he
never used 20 meter CW because he was told by some idiot that it was a
expert operator's band and folks there didn't tolerate anything less!) The
rule is that the Amateur Bands were created for newbies. That's one reason
why we call it Amateur: You don't have to pass a professional competency
test to get on the air.

Let's turn it around and point out good operating practices. These apply to
newbies and OTs alike. (One of the advantages of having been pounding brass
for well over half a century is that I have personal experience with both.)

2. Send at the speed at which you can copy well.

3. Within your range, always match the other station's speed.

4. Listen and listen. After CQ, listen all AROUND your frequency, especially
if you're near one of the QRP watering holes (e.g. 7030, 7040, 14060,
etc.). There are a significant number of crystal controlled rigs out there
who can't zero beat you. Also some simple rigs don't compensate for their
receive BFO offset, so they're several hundred Hz off their transmitting
frequency. And there are those still trying to figure out the controls on
their rig ;-)

5. If you missed something, don't be afraid to ask for a repeat.

6. Give HONEST signal reports. If the other guy doesn't like it, he's not
worth your time anyway. I get my OT ire up when some guy says my sig is 589
but too weak to copy well! (That's often excused by saying he has a huge QRN

That's assuming it mostly works. From time to time software releases
are broken, sometimes in the packaging process, other times a tidbit
of unfinished code enhancement sneaks in. So to catch these errors,
software is often released in a process that goes something like:

automated build automated install (says done nightly by scripts) -
manual install on a single system aka smoke test - a staging
release that is distributed to a small group (5-20 people for smaller
projects) for a short period of time - a beta release to a wider
audience of savvy (power) users, and finally the gold version is
released if the process hasn't been terminated by this point in time.

Elecraft support doesn't need 600 reports that a bone-headed mistake
was made in the FM support for example. The first report is good
enough to alert Wayne et all to start debugging.

WELCOME!

In no particular order:

1) Not getting on the air. While it is a good idea to do some practice

make
lots of CW contacts and have lots of fun.

2) Sending too fast for the situation.

3) Expecting too much too soon.

4) Trying to use a rig that's not very good for CW (doesn't apply to Elecraft
rigs!)

5) Not being familiar with abbreviations and procedures. Make a list of the
common ones and have it handy. Listen to a few QSOs and get the general idea of
how it's done.

6) Not asking questions or requesting help. (you've avoided this one!)

Re: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-25 Thread Sandy

I think Ron has hit quite a few key things below.

One of the things I find VERY lacking is, no one has taught some of the
newbies to CW the proper protocol of procedures that used to be taught.
Exchanges omit a lot of stuff no doubt copying procedures common in
contests.

A few examples are people calling CQ 5-10 times and DE their callsign once
or twice, then repeat this procedure again 1-2 times!
Another common thing is after I call a CQ thusly: CQ CQ CQ DE W5TVW W5TVW
W5TVW K. I hear someone usually a little off frequency, delayed a bit and
among other stations 1-2 khz. away just send: W1ABC. This can be VERY
annoying. Is this station calling me? Why didn't he AT LEAST send: W5TVW
DE W1ABC K?

Stations sending a 3 X 3 CQ call ending in KN!

Is this because ARRL saw fit to stop putting this information in the
Handbook and make more money selling you another operating manual? They
used to publish a concise small booklet with proper CW procedures, the Q
code, abbreviations and other niceties for 10-25 cents. Most of the time
they would send one to you free if you requested it. It was sort of a
Manners etiquette book for the radio amateur.

Some of the new band expanded Technician guys are trying their hand at
really doing some CW operation. There isn't a plethora of old timers around
these days who teach them what's polite and what's impolite.

I agree wholeheartedly about people trying to send too fast, skimping on
inter word spacing, garbled or badly timed sending and mistakes galore. If
you slow these guys down a bit, most of them send very copyable CW without
all the mistakes.

There are a lot of newer hams out there really trying and I think they
should be encouraged to preserve our now ancient art of Morse
telegraphywhich is, by the waystill very useful in spite of it's
antiquity!

Sandy W5TVW

as of today, the 25th, and the projected shiping date. Was this just a carrot
being dangled in front of those who have waited almost a year? I would hope
not, but. I believe the KRX3 was being offered along with the K3 last year
at about this time.yes? Patience is one thing, but when it's the same old
thing over and over it becomes frustrating. At the very least we should have
seen an update today.

Let me jump in.

Eric does the web updates and he is on a long delayed and much deserved
vacation until the end of the month. Wayne is at Visalia.

The first batch of KRX3 board sets are in fact manufactured and tested.
As are the auxiliary DSP boards - the KRX3 has its own dedicated DSP.
The special shields were due in a couple of days ago and were delayed
slightly because the custom tooling was delayed from the toolmaker. I
do not know if this is 2 or 3 days or 5 or 6 days and don't care to
guess. I am expecting my shield to be shipped any day now.

Once the shields are received, the first batch of KRX3s will be shipped
to the field testers so they can look for subtleties in operation that
Wayne and I may have missed.

Meanwhile, KRX3s will be manufactured and held pending any mods that may
arise from the expanded tests. This is to minimize the wait time
between the green light from testing and shipment to our customers who
have waited too long for this product.

The firmware for controlling the KRX3 is complex. It is working well,
but it really needs to be hammered on by the field test group to help
uncover things that Wayne and I might have overlooked.

The manual for installing the KRX3 must be field tested and revised as
necessary so you'll be able to install the KRX3 into your K3 with
confidence.

Once we're confident that all is well, we'll ship.

I can state unequivocally that the KRX3 in my K3 is working, and working
very well. All modes ( CW, SSB, DATA, AM, FM). All bands (160m - 6m).
Audio goes to LINE OUT. If I tune it to a frequency and have the same
filter and filter offset selected in both receivers, they are locked.
I can, for example, listen to WWV USB on one receiver and LSB on the
other and combine the audios (set SPKR=1 and unplug the headphones) and
there is no beat between them.

I'll be happy to demo it to anyone who lives close enough and wants to
come to my shack and see it. Just email me to set up a time.

The KRX3 is real and it is coming soon. It is not vaporware. Please,
just hold on a little longer...

73,

Lyle KK7P

Practice a bit with a partner, or a recording device.

It is very important to get the spacing between elements, letters, and words
correct.

A bad fist will not attract as many QSOs as a good one.

Sloppy sending, or a fist with too much swing is a genuine pain to copy.

A good fist is a thing of beauty that everyone will appreciate.

[Elecraft] K3 notice - November Orders + INRAD

2008-04-25 Thread Eric Tichansky
Greetings all! First post to the reflector, but having been following
for some time now. Adding to the QRM ;)

K3 order confirmation notice received 4/26 for two loaded K3 kits
ordered Nov 29 and Nov 30. Looks like the month of November will be
shipped out almost by month's end (April). 1000Hz/400Hz CW filters for
both rigs just ordered from INRAD today; with additional filter orders,
savings can be attractive on the 8-pole filters (ie. 6 filters for about
$45 savings minus shipping). Perhaps find a friend (or fellow local
club members) with K3s on order and bulk purchase filters from INRAD.
