RE: [Elecraft] K3 is really a computer radio
I don't find any difficulty discerning between "push" and "push and hold", that's been a feature of many consumer electronics for years. After 2 months with the K3 I'm still not familiar with all the features, menus and buttons, because I'm having more fun on the radio than I've had in years. The radio is just a joy to use. I don't find that switching modes or bands is a problem. Sometimes I have to fish around for a setting in the menus or look at the manual, but it's not as difficult as my FT-857D! As for a computer control program try Ham Radio Deluxe, the developer, Simon Brown, owns a K3 and HRD does a fine job. No need for Elecraft to reinvent the wheel. [Elecraft] K3 is really a computer radio
After two solid days of using the K3 to chase DX, changing bands and modes often, I conclude that the K3 should be mated with computer control for real flexibility in this application of use. The front panel is mainly for DXpeditions that stay on one freq/mode for long periods. Otherwise, I get a new band, or two, when I want to activate the VOX, as a typical example of the careful touch needed to get either one small push or a longer push... and the mistaken change also cancels out my selection of Split when I finally get back to the desired band. More buttons to CAREFULLY push. And without using the complex and easily forgotten scheme of programming the memories as band/mode change agents, going from CW band to phone means pushing the excursion speed button (Coarse, Fine, etc.), spinning the tuning knob frantically and changing the mode button with a slight push, not a heavy one. Yes, Elecrafters, I know there is a well-known work-around, but I have now concluded that the K3 front panel is vy difficult and that complete computer control is the answer, at least for DX chasers and those who make many band/mode changes in a short period of time. I suggest Elecraft market a computer program for the K3 asap, or at least make recommendations of those that seem best. But then, I ask myself, do I want a FLEX substitute? 73, Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, It was a wonderful day here on the mountain. Temperature got up to 56 degrees and the sun was out for most of the day. It was s great day to cut, haul, split, and stack wood. Not like I need any more wood but it sure does feel good to do all the work. I will sleep well tonight and it is much cheaper than a gym membership. Besides the trees are down and they need to get cleared out so I can replant. Yesterday I was waiting for the UPS guy to come when I walked out on the deck to listen for his truck. No sooner did I step out the door when two grouse flushed ten feet away. Then as my heart was racing another popped out. Last a third flew up into a tree and watched me for a while before it too left. I have been seeing one out there but I did not know there was a party planned. I could have tossed out some cracked corn and sunflower seeds. They would have enjoyed that. Propagation was not so hot on twenty meters this week but seemed OK on forty when I listened to it. Last night I scanned the voice portions of 80 and 40 and was not induced to make a call. Did not seem like the right thing to do. Oh well, maybe some day. Looking at Space Weather I find the coronal holes have closed and there were two small sunspots. However, we don't know what conditions will be like tomorrow until we start. Please join us tomorrow evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help) 3) Call by time zone (East, Central & Mountain, everybody else) Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz Stay well, Kevin. I've mounted my T-1 with the foam tape, but with care to not cover the battery compartment. Yes, the tape would need to come up.. or off, to change the batteries, although that doesn't have to happen often, and the tape will come up with a bit of good luck, clean enough to reuse, especially when used in small patches. I think I have seen this somewhere before, but I wanted to make sure... I would like to be able to listen on 10m to a receive converter while transmitting on 6m. Re: [Elecraft] K3- problem with no text on psk31, 30 meters
There are four submodes of the DATA mode. If the T is present, it indicates one of the text decode modes is active (AFSK A, FSK D or PSK D). If the mode is DATA A, then the T is no longer present. When in DATA mode, hold the DATA MD button to display the DATA submode and rotate the VFO B knob to select the desired one. If you are operating PSK31 using HRD, then you want to be in DATA A mode. The PSK D submode is for use with the K3's internal PSK decoder and use of a CW paddle for sending PSK. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 REMOTE SPEAKER
Apparently RadioShack no longer sells that little speaker. There is another lighter-weight alternative, but it requires 2 AAA cells, since it includes an amplifier circuit. This is a tiny no-name dual speaker designed for iPods which is sometimes available in the electronics section of drug stores. It sports an impudent integral 3.5 mm stereo plug which is easily dislodged, so it needs to be carefully protected inside a backpack. It works better with the KX1 if it's used with a short male-female 3.5 mm patch cord. The good news is that it costs about $10. 73, Bruce N7RR J. When I changed the K3 to 30 meters and called him, he said I had only sent a carrier, he could hear the psk signal, but NO TEXT.. I noticed on the the display a "T" in the lower right corner of the display. The manual says on page 12, T indicates FM /tone, or CW/data text decode.. I have never seen this when operating on 20 meter psk.. but changing bands it does appear on every band when the mode is set to Data. On 20 meters is does not appear... Re: [Elecraft] K2: C222 Capacitor Substitution OK?
Jon, You can use the larger capacitor under 3 conditions. 1) The capacitance is the same, 2) The voltage rating is as high or higher (I believe the small blue ones are rated at 50 volts), and 3) You can make it fit physically without resorting the long leads - C222 is used at 21 MHz. 73, Don W3FPR Jon Perelstein wrote: I can't find the last of the 100pf capacitors for C222 (NPO, 101) I happen to have a spare 100pf that I used for another project, but it's the bigger, kind of orange colored, and roundish type instead of the little blue pillow-shaped type. Is it ok to substitute the bigger one for the blue pillow-shaped type? RE: [Elecraft] K3 RS 232
You should be able to change the K3 baud rate without power cycling the radio. My PC programs that connect to the K3 try each of the supported baud rates and sync at the K3's speed without prompting the user for the speed. I'm also able to programmatically change the K3's baud rate and sync at the new baud rate without powering off the K3. I'd suggest you try this: Connect your logging program and get it working. Now close the logging program. Change the K3's RS-232 baud rate (from the K3 front panel) to a different speed, and then set it back to the original speed without powering the K3 on or off. Then reconnect with your logging program. If it can connect, then your K3 can change baud rates without a power cycle. Alternatively, start the K3 Utility, and on the Ports page, try "test communications", read the baud rate, then change the K3's baud rate from the front panel, and try "test communications" again. The K3 Utility should detect the new baud rate. Maybe the logging program has to be restarted when you change K3 baud rates? Is it ok to substitute the bigger one for the blue pillow-shaped type? I don't have any leftover capacitors (other than those that should be left over), so I'm guessing that I lost the C222 capacitor somewhere on my work table. Jon KB1QBZ __ Do You Yahoo!? [Elecraft] SOLVED: K3: TX audio setup
Once again great and prompt support from both the Elecraft list as well as microHAM. Thank you all! Executing W4TV's advice solved the problem: Elecraft connect pin 7 (mic ground) and pin 8 (PTT ground) in parallel and use a single RF choke to ground. This causes a "pin 1" common mode RFI problem because PTT and microphone circuits are "mixed." A single cut gave me pristine audio in the monitor and on the air as confirmed by a local volunteer. Settings now: MIC GAIN = 30, COMP = 20, TX EQ 0.05=+6, 0.10 = +4, 0.20 = +2, 1.60 = +2, 2.40 = +4, 3.20 = +6. I might tweak the EQ some more later. Re: [Elecraft] RE: K3: TX audio setup
Franki, If you try setting up the audio without the MicroHam first, you'll know if its that giving problems. You don't say if you have the K3 mic gain on the High or Low setting (Main menu) and whether or not you've set the mic gain in accordance with the manual Page 28 (Revision D1) whilst looking at the alc meter. The HC4 and HC5 mics have low output compared with many mics so you need to be prepared to turn the gain up quite high, but it all depends on the strength and pitch of your voice. I use both of them and I think it almost certain that you should have the mic gain on the H setting for those mics. Then follow the procedure on p 28 of the Manual. As regards compression I have found that with my voice, around 15 is a good level for dx working to give punch without sounding overprocessed. As regards TXG VCE, I have found that above about +1.5db the output does not increase much so I have it at that level like you. At that level the K3 seems to drive my amplifier about right. The equaliser is the icing on the cake and you can play with it once everything else is right. The monitor is ok but I've found you get a clearer idea of what it sounds like if you record yourself and listen to it after. I get my computer to listen to me on another rx and record it that way. Not only will you hear your voice but you'll also get a feel for how loud the background noise is. If it's too loud it could mean that the mic gain and/or the compression should be turned down a bit. I see folks using the US Interface box along with HRD. What are the advantages of using Navigator with HRD over just using HRD alone? The Navigator is a USB-to-rig interface box (hardware); HRD is control and digital mode software. The computer running HRD has to connect to the radio somehow. For a K3, you only need a serial cable and two audio cables, assuming your computer has a "sound card." Most (but not all) of what an interface such as the Navigator provides is built in to the K3. Charlie, I'm using a K3 to drive my 87A, with no problems. What fault are you getting from the 87A? Does it occur on all bands, or just some or one? How do you have the K3 cabled to the 87A? Franki From an earlier post to the Reflector I made... There have been various comments on the SSB audio from the K3 in recent times. I use a Kenwood MC-43S dynamic fist microphone with some compression and equalisation. I was in QSO this morning and the station I was working was very impressed with the audio, without prompting he said the audio was beautiful and sounded very nice. Settings: Mic gain: 30 Compression: 20 Equaliser: 50 Hz -8dB, 100 Hz -4dB, 200 Hz 0dB, 400 Hz +2dB, 800 Hz +2dB, 1.6 KHz +5dB, 2.4 KHz +7dB, 3.2 KHz +2dB. Re: [Elecraft] K3: TX audio setup
Franki On the UK Elecraft net (SSB) there are users with several different microphone types and occasionally someone will call with poor TX audio. In every case they have been successful in improving the audio to the point where good audio is the norm and a K2 caller is easy to pick out. The usual problems, in no particular order, appear to be: Poor screening of the microphone cable, poor grounding, or high RF levels in the shack (there was a problem with some front panel microphone sockets and grounding, check back through the archive). Lack of adjustment of the TX equaliser, compression, or microphone level. Talking close to a microphone not fitted with a foam breath "pop" filter. A setting of 1 for compression is very low. The microphone gain also seems low. TXG-VCE of -1.5 dB is quite normal, if you are using 1.5 dB of gain it is probably going to produce excessive drive on SSB compared to CW levels. I am not sure why you are using a microham interface, an ordinary and cheap computer headset plugged into the rear of the K3 often sounds incredibly good, some of the stations on the net use headsets in the $1 to $20 range with very good quality audio. Gaming headsets are a current favourite for their comfort. One station uses a Heil Goldline microphone but with the normal insert switched in (not the HC4/5). A Kenwood MC-43S fist mic, as used on your TS-850, also sounds good - I have one but it sometimes results in reports of the PTT lever creaking! My current favourite microphone is a Sony one normally used for home studio recording with DAT recorders and similar, I use a low cost microphone boom/floor stand and a low cost foot switch. Almost any microphone can be made to sound good with a K3, especially with a little tweaking of the equaliser. Call into the net in the morning and we will see what everyone thinks and suggests! 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80, Acom 1000. +++ I don't do SSB very often and it's the first time I try this mode with the K3. [Elecraft] K3 intermittent problem?

I am surprised that you do not also see Hi Curr messages. 73, Don W3FPR NZ0T wrote: Thanks Don, The rig behaves the same into the dummy load in all configurations with or without the KAT100 in line, with or without the mike or paddles connected, with or without attached and I even tried a different coax jumper. 160 is the only band it occurs on. If it still fails, the problem is definitely with the K2. If it behaves, then you need to look at your antenna system - you may be better off with a 1:1 choke balun than your 4-1 balun. I really don't know why hams persist in using a 4-1 balun when driving ladder wire feeders - the 450 ohms is only the characteristic impedance of the line and that says nothing about the feedpoint impedance - the ladder line acts as a transmission line transformer. Measure the feedpoint impedance of the 450 ohm line with an antenna analyzer (operate it on batteries) where you connect the balun. If the impedance is high, then use the 4-1 balun, but if it is low a 1-1 choke balun will be a better choice. Which balun is better depends on the electrical length of your feedline. The K2 can behave differently in the presence of RF-in-the-shack than your 706, so that is not a fair comparison. Look at what you have connected to the K2 and ask what is different - the routing of the paddle cable? How is the power supply cable routed? Do you have a microphone connected? Have you grounded the microphone jack shell on that K2? If you have a K2 problem, ask again with details of the failure with a dummy load. Get it working with a dummy load before adding the extra element of the antenna into the problem. All we can say right now is that your problem is either with the antenna, power supply, any cable attached to the K2 or the K3 itself. Which one is pure guesswork until you reduce the number of variables. 73, Don W3FPR NZ0T wrote: Now that I have my K3 at home I moved my K2/100/KAT100 to our lake cabin. All other bands are fine, the antenna (160M dipole fed with ladder line thru 4-1 balun and about 6' of coax into the cabin) is fine and the ground seems fine. It was shutting down the MFJ 4125 switching power supply so thinking maybe RF was getting into the supply I took the rig home and it worked just fine there. Brought it back this weekend with an Astron linear supply and while that PS is not shutting down the rig still wants to. I have used this same setup before here with no problems and this started happening suddenly last weekend. I tried the rig without the KAT100 thru a manual tuner and it still wants to shut down. [Elecraft] K3: PA and sidetone loss
K3 #328 was functioning correctly this morning, till suddenly two changes occurred, neither requested. First, the power level in CW dropped significantly - and on checking, I found that the KPA3 was in bypass mode. Second, I lost my sidetone. Experiments with straight key, paddle and keyboard CW program only produced short "dits". Finally, even the "dits" disappeared, and I was left with no sidetone at all. Further checking showed that the sidetone pitch had changed to 000. I reset the pitch to its usual level, and all was well. Could these changes result from bugs in the firmware? I am using the latest MCU 2.46 and DSP 1.92. 73 Chris, MØPSK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] KX1 REMOTE SPEAKER
The key to using a speaker for the KX1 is that it should provide a good impedance match with the KX1 output. I've found that the RadioShack model 19-318A works very well with the KX1 without any additional amplification. The only modification I made to the speaker was to add a shorter cable to save weight and to use a stereo plug so that both the tip and ring are wired in parallel. I like to use a speaker when I take the KX1 on a hiking trip so that I can keep the radio on while doing camp chores. That way I'm only tied to the rig when I'm actually transmitting. 73, Bruce Prior N7RR J. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 REMOTE SPEAKER
What I did was sort of homebrew. Several years ago at Dayton, a guy was selling battery-powered PC speakers for $2 a pair (last year, they were $4/pair). I bought a set. Discovered that they ran off 6 D cells, three in one speaker, three in the other. I figured out how to rewire it so that the speaker with the amp board in it ran off a 9V battery. Now, I have a great little amplified speaker to use with not just the KX1, for which I paid two bucks. 73! (Wires are not pinched). This seems to be the weakest link in a great rig. Will build the 80-30 module and ATU next. I have received opposite opinions on which module to install first. I'd welcome any comments. Now the primary question. To stay with the kit concept, I'd welcome suggestions on building, 'not buying', a small amplified speaker with a 2' cord to plug into the phone jack on my KX1. I'm thinking along the lines of using a LM386N chip with a 1" speaker in a small 1" x 1.5" x 4" Rat Shack plastic box. It's just 'gotta' be home brew and small.
