Re: [Elecraft] [K3] front mic not working after subRx install
Mike, Make sure that BOTH connectors between the front panel and DSP boards are mated. If you leave the one with the single row of pins unmated you will get the problem of the front mic socket not working. Trust me - I have done this TWICE !!! 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Mon, 12 Jan 2009 15:18:38 -0800, Mike Scott wrote: I installed the second receiver in my K3 and at the same time made the prescribed audio and line out modifications. After checking out the receiver my microphone is now dead using the front panel. Rear connection works okay. I have been using the front panel microphone connector without a hitch up until the time I went off line to make the above modifications. So has this happened to anyone else and is there something obvious before I start taking covers off? One thing to note, I did have a problem with the SubRx install. The Sub-In and Sub-Out board connections to the SubRx are very difficult to tell when they are mated correctly as most of the pins are not visible. I apparently ended up with an improper mating and smoked the sub-out board. A quick call to Elecraft identified the problem and a new sub-out board put me on the air after a very careful inspection of the connectors this time. I am wondering if the sub-out is the only thing that I smoked now. The microphone-audio path seems quite remote from all this activity but I don't know what sneak paths I might have created with a misconnected sub-out connection. I checked microphone gain (it is set at 30 with front panel-high, no bias), just as it was before this problem arose. Those mic settings work well for the rear connector using the same microphone. I use one of those Kenwood adapters to audio plugs that came with a microphone and the microphone has a dynamic element. Re: [Elecraft] Condx
Which bands? The little operating I've done lately shows the higher frequency bands (10 MHz and up) pretty quiet in the evenings but 160/80/40 are hopping with the activity shifting down in frequency as the evening progresses. The higher frequency bands - at least up through 20 meters -are pretty busy during the day. If you're seriously wondering about the rig, the Elecraft XG2 is a great little calibrated signal generator that will reassure you at least about 80/40/20 meters. An option is WWV. Out here on the western edge of the continent I've not been able to hear WWV on 10 MHz at all in the evenings lately. That's very rare. On 5 MHz Hawaii (lady's voice) booms in and Ft. Collins (man's voice) is very weak most evenings. (Haven't checked 2.5 MHz lately.) That's pretty typical for the bottom of the sunspot cycle. The bands don't die. The optimum frequencies just move down during this time. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Are the bands really this bad or is there something wrong with my K2? Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 - More than one antenna per band? Aux outputs?
Mike, Ok on the transverter angle, I understand now. I have exhausted the LP-Remote's 16 relays for other control functions (selecting receive antennas, powering on the K3, turning stuff on and off). One option was to continue a past discussion with Larry (N8LP) about an expansion board, which LP-Remote has provisions for. The KRC2 was an option I was exploring, but I also have a Hamation relay controller that may do the job for me. It is a network based relay controller and Hamation has modified the software to allow me to control the relay driver remotely. Now, I need to set it up. Yes, I've worked some 40 DX over those distances too. Often can't hear California from Oregon on 40, but get a 599 from Oceania on what often sounds like a dead band until the signal appears. Of course, that's a function of being close to the MUF, which does drop down to 7 MHz and even lower these days. I suspect a lot of Hams are used to seeing the MUF stay above 21 MHz. They simply aren't used to 40 or sometimes 80 meters acting like 20, 15 and 10 meters in more active sunspot periods. Of course, RF absorption by the low-altitude solar-generated ions is more of a nuisance on the lower frequencies until a bit after local sunset. [Elecraft] Mic Gain Changing
Hi All,I have not done much SSB so I am not sure what is happening, but this does not seem correct so I will descibe what is happening. When I turn on my K3 #2080 for a MARS net I need to have the MIC gain set to about 25, and the Processor set to 15 for my HC5/Heil Proset to get about 95 Watts out initially, which I feel is excellent. However, after a few minutes I can turn down the gain and still get 95 Watts out. After about 10 minutes I have the MIC gain down to 8 and I am still blasting away at 95 Watts. I feel I could go even lower. Its funny though that at any gain level I always get a good report. Its like the MIC gain is really not critical and the rig knows how to adjust for your voice for best signal.I thought that maybe as I get used to speaking I start talking more forcefully and need to cut the gain down but Ive consciously tried to avoid this, and the minimum apparent required MIC gain just seems to drop after a few minutes.Anyway the rig apparently works great like this. I just thought that this condition was not normal.72,Steve, W2MY, AAR6CX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Condx
Here in Northern California, 40 meters is all but unusable within 2 or 3 hours after sunset, and 30 meters acts more like 20 these days-- fading out badly as soon as the sun gets close to setting. 20 is even worse than earlier this year--today is typical, with nothing much heard after about 3:30 PM local time--really rotten! The main thing I notice is that 40m is so bad at night lately, and shows no sign of improvement. Even last weekend's NAQP CW contest couldn't keep an opening going on 40m Saturday evening--everyone just faded away before the contest ended at 10 PM local. That only leaves 80 and 160 for night work, and they've been pretty decent, actually. Thank goodness we have allocations spread around the HF spectrum. The sunspot activity is kinda like the economy right now--we're all hoping we just saw the bottom, and it's all up from here. Strange times. 72 es 73, Dave (K2 #6390) http://www.k7daa.com On Jan 13, 2009, at 7:34 AM, John Wiener wrote: Are the bands really this bad or is there something wrong with my K2? Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 - More than one antenna per band? Aux outputs?
Dana; I am advised that the K3 can indeed change the KRC2 ACC settings. The KRC2 menu contains the settings that would need to be changed. With this in mind, it should be rather easy to devise a data sequence to have the K3 change the settings. So, with this in mind, I believe the answer is yes to your question - the KRC2 can do the job you are asking about, remotely changing the antennas for you. Hope this helps. This is what I was trying to imply by pretending there is a trasnverter so you can have more than one setting per band, but as you appear to have one, why not just use the LP remote for all of this? Re: [Elecraft] Condx
Hello All, Condx have been ok in Oklahoma , I worked 4 EU stations this morning and @ 2057 UTC worked VK4BLK running the K3 @ 20 watts and an old tribander. This is normal here , however I am running JT65A weak signal mode. 73 all gd dxing Ken K5DNL -- --- On Tue, 1/13/09, Dave-K7DAA d...@k7daa.com wrote: From: Dave-K7DAA d...@k7daa.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Condx To: Elecraft email email elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 6:18 PM Here in Northern California, 40 meters is all but unusable within 2 or 3 hours after sunset, and 30 meters acts more like 20 these days-- fading out badly as soon as the sun gets close to setting. [Elecraft] Rose now has a URL
Elecraft has just posted Rose's new URL on the Elecraft website. It provides a convenient way to see her work, and there are many more photos than you would receive if you made an e-mail request for information. Look for her listing near the bottom of the opening page of the site. We both thank Elecraft for their support. 73! [Elecraft] Need advice
Maybe a problem maybe not! The K3 works fine except the speaker audio has gone away. No external speaker and when unplugged there is no K3 speaker audio either. The headphones work fine as every other part of the K3 does. I've not removed the top or in any way upset anything. I've checked every control and menu settings although I've not messed with them. One minute it had audio from the speaker and the next none. Any ideas before I call Elecraft?
