Try reinstalling the K3 Utility. Use Windows Add/Remove programs to remove
it and then install again from the Elecraft web site. One person had a
corrupt installation. It doesn't fit your description of what has or hasn't
changed, but it is easy to try.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 is not responding

2009-04-11 Thread Dick Dievendorff
I'd recommend trying an RS-233 port, if at all possible, or can you try
another USB to Serial adapter?

I have a catchall "troubleshooting USB to Serial Adapter" section in K3
Utility Help that covers almost everything I've ever heard.

USB to serial adapters do fail sometimes, as do USB ports, and not all
failing devices announce themselves as inoperative.

If you have more than one USB hub on your computer, try a different one.
Look to the Windows Device Manager for the COM port assignment as it will
very likely be different if you move the KUSB from hub to hub.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2009-04-11 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
I do believe spring was here in Oregon. I had some flowers bloom.
Jonquils, then trilliums, and then the first few daffodils. Now it is chilly,
grey, and wet. The hummingbirds did inspect the area on our warmest day but
I've not seen them since. An avian oddity? The Stellar's Jays are pushing the
Grey Jays around! Very odd. However there are so many Stellar's Jays that the
Greys cannot use their flocking techniques to intimidate the larger Stellar's.
Conditions on twenty meters were marginal but extended exchanges were
possible. The sun is still quiet but that is nothing new. The folks on 160
meters are enjoying this period very much. I need to add some extra length to
my antenna so I can do more than just listen on that band. I have never tried
it and have been told of its interesting differences.

Re: [Elecraft] FW: [CQ-Contest] SOME THOUGHTS ON USING THE K3 ON SSB

2009-04-11 Thread Geoffrey Downs
After extensive experiments with tx audio settings in pursuit of "perfect
audio" for my purposes - dxing on 80m - I came to the conclusion that for my
voice with the HC-4, an offset of -0.07 with the 2.8 kHz filter was about
right.

However I would not say that I "had" to do this to make the audio "decent".
It was very decent, excellent even, without offset and with appropriate
settings of mic gain, compression and equaliser but to my ears, rightly or
wrongly, it sounded slightly better *for my purposes* with the offset.

In the same way I tried both the 2.7 kHz and the 2.8 kHz filters after
building my K3 in January 2008 and to my ears the tx audio from the 2.8 kHz
sounded slightly better for what I wanted than from the 2.7 kHz.

Others may have a different view. Opinions about tx audio are very
subjective and also have to be taken in usage context. I am looking for
audio that I think will be heard on the other side of the planet on 80m when
my signal is at or below the noise level, but that might not be right for
another band or for another purpose. My method of experimenting is to make
recordings on my PC from another receiver, but of course the characteristics
of the other rx will not necessarily match those of the rig of the station I
am trying to work, and the recording process can make subtle changes too. So
it's a rather inexact science providing hours of harmless fun that almost
keeps me out of mischief ;-)

[Elecraft] K2/KPA100: External Amplifier Keying Test (PA Key) Problem

2009-04-11 Thread Jon Perelstein
Page 49 of the KPA100 instructions calls for testing the resistance between
ground and the tab of Q9 on the KPA100 board (or center conductor of the PA KEY
output jack, J7).

According to the instructions, the resistance should drop to less than 3 ohms
when the K2 is put into TUNE mode.  Mine only drops to about 80 ohms.  The
troubleshooting in the KPA100 manual doesn't even include any information for
what to do if the resistance doesn't drop to less than 3 ohms.

Everything else -- and I mean everything else -- seems to be working correctly
with the KPA100.  My serial number is 06550.

Is this a problem?  If so, any suggestions?

Thanks

  David,

The LMC660 op amp can have a tendency to oscillate when driving a
capacitive load (see the LMC660 datasheet) although it is normally
  stable in the K2.

Before replacing it, try the following steps - check after each one and
  stop if no oscillation.
  1) Flush trim the leads of U10 and the nearby R-Paks.
  2) Use a cotton swab and alcohol to clean any flux residue from the area
  of U10, RP2 and RP3.
  3) Try adding a 10 pF capacitor between U10 pins 8 and 9

If the oscillation persists, replace U10.

[Elecraft] [K2] Transmitted Phase Noise

2009-04-11 Thread m0trx

Dear All,

A quick search on Nabble produced some posts from several years back discussing
the transmitted phase noise present when using the K2 with the KPA100 PA stage.
However, I was unable to find any firm conclusions to these discussions i.e. a
response from Elecraft itself.

Now it may well be that the output of the K2 conforms to FCC regulations.
However, if the level of phase noise is far greater than that of other
commercial transceivers then I see this as being a problem. I am the owner and
builder of K2 #6593 and am currently considering building the KPA100. It is for
this reason that I am keen to receive any thoughts/conclusions on this matter.

Regards,

Merlin Cooper

Subject: [CQ-Contest] SOME THOUGHTS ON USING THE K3 ON SSB

What I'm about to relate here may very well be posted at other spots on the
Inet, but I haven't had much luck in finding it, so this will hopefully be
helpful to contesters using the Elecraft K3 on phone.

I address two points. First is setting the crystal filter center frequency
offset which greatly affects transmit audio quality. Second is use of the
rear panel mike and audio in jacks in conjunction with sound card voice
keying.

We don't operate a lot of ssb from NR4M, but it's on the rise (don't blame
Steve - a gun was held to his head). Somehow or other we decided to make an
M/M effort in the ARRL SSB DX test. We spent hours trying to get good audio
out of the K3. We were using a Heil headset with the HC-4 element.

To make a long story short, while going through the menus I found FLx FRQ
in the configuration menu. After reading about this menu item I played with
it a little to see if it made a difference. Did it ever!

The 5 pole crystal filters have a label on them specifying what the offset
should be. Most are labled "-0.91". At some point we had done a master
reset of the radio which set the offset at "0.0". When we set the offset to
-0.89 as the filter in one of the K3s was labled, we received great audio
reports.

One of the contesting stations in MD was having transmit audio problems with
the K3s there and they weren't sure that the 20M stack was working correctly
as well. This morning four or five stations including the one with audio
problems did some horse racing and got comparative audio reports from
European stations.

I told the station with problems about the filter offset. Interestingly
enough they were using the eight pole ssb filters that should not have
required offset according to the manual. On a whim, they tried the offset
adjustment and found that made a difference. When we were done both of their
K3s went from sounding terrible to being quite acceptable.

Has anyone else using the eight pole ssb filter had to adjust the offset to
get it to sound decent on transmit?

In addition to a couple pair of Heil headsets with HC-4 elements, we have a
couple of very comfortable headsets with hi fidelity mikes. We found that by
adjusting the transmit audio equalizer, we could get pretty decent sounding
audio from the hifi mike.

The problem was that when we recorded the voice keyer messages on the
computer and played them back through the radio there was one problem when
using mike input and another when using line input. It appears that there is
no transformer isolation on the mike input which resulted in hum and other
extraneous noises. When running the audio into line in, it doesn't get
pushed through the transmit audio equalizer. Ken K4ZW said he ended up using
an extrernal isolation transformer and ran the sound card input into the
rear mike jack.

It would be nice if Elecraft could run the line in through the transmit
audio equalizer when in the ssb mode!

If there is detailed information regarding either of these subjects on the
web, I'd appreciate knowing where! Otherwise, I hope it might be useful.

[Elecraft] Improved K3 Audio experience

2009-04-11 Thread Mike Scott
I was one of the people who wasn't quite happy with K3 audio.
Perhaps my experience will help others.
I worked with Wayne and he noticed something in my audio recordings and made
some suggestions. There are a lot of combinations of AGC settings that I had
worked through but the background noise in my high-noise environment always
left me fatigued. Note this is not hiss just loud band noise as presented to
my ears, the narrower the filter the more tiring the noise. (Think of a
windstorm outside whistling through the trees the narrower the filter the
more band-limited the noise and the more whistle-like.)

Well now, it seems Wayne asked me where my Pitch setting was. I hadn't
thought about moving it before he asked.

I now set Pitch to 420 and the "color" of the background noise has changed,
significantly. I have been sitting here for a couple of hours working on my
computer with the K3 tuned to just noise and it seems like I am listening to
a different receiver. High noise environments are a major bummer but I am
finding ways to cope. This Pitch effect is probably psychological but higher
pitched whistling through the trees left me significantly more tired.
Changing Pitch has had a major effect on these tired ears.

Other than the Pitch, here are the settings I find the best for my
environment:

AGC DCY = Soft
AGC Hold = 0.3
AGC PLS = Off
AGC SLP = 8
AGC THR = 2
AGC-F = 80
FGC-S = 20 (I normally operate in slow now)

Comments:
There have been many comments about AGC induced IMD in pileups. Large noise
backgrounds may act like its' own pileup. I am not an expert here but noise
can cause AGC gain fluctuations just like one signal in a pileup causing
gain fluctuations that the rest of the signals mix with. The larger the
fluctuations and the faster the fluctuations the more chances there are for
creating mixing products in the audio range. Operating with AGC off and
riding the RF gain control is the most pleasing audio solution but going to
soft decay and slow AGC makes sense and helps a lot.

AGC THR=2 causes the AGC to engage sooner, in effect this sounds to the ear
like turning down the RF gain reducing background noise. Reduced RF gain
always helps when the signal is strong enough. This may actually not help
the IMD situation, don't really know.

AGC SLP = 8 doesn't quite sound as good as 12 but this is a tradeoff to be
able to distinguish weak from strong signals. I operate in diversity mode
most of the time with a vertical and a dipole. I like to be able to hear
which path is producing the stronger signal.

AGC-F = 80 reduces the decay rate after noise events. This then is a
compromise between stock 120 dB per second decay and the slow AGC decay rate
of 20 dB per second. Think of this now as AGC-Medium, this is not a major
effect.

Thanks for taking the time Wayne.

[Elecraft] (K3) Per band Power settings not functioning properly with 3.06

2009-04-11 Thread KZ5D

Hello all,

Using 3.06 with CONFIG set to Per Band for PWR SET. VFO A on 30m, Sub on
40.

My power settting on 30m is 100 w. Normal setting on 40m is 40w (to drive
amp).

IF I want to change bands, using A/B, the Pwr on 40m uses the same setting
as on 30m - 100 watts.

There seems to be a bug in the program that doesn't hold Pwr Set per Band
when using the A/B switch.

Note: problem occurs when the SUB is ON and OFF. Also find the same problem
when VFO A is on 40 and set to 40 w. IF I change bands to 30m (VFO set to
a 30 m frequency by using the A/B switch, I get 40 w out on 30m, not the
100 w that is the setting.

Art KZ5D

I don't think he has a "second K3". The SO4R expedition only has ONE K3
plus 3 IC-7000s according to their website below.

http://www.dxfriends.com/s04r/plans.php

I believe he''s saying his KRX3 has not been wired for AUX RF, but it's
really not clear.

If he has a KXV3 but KRX3 was not wired for AUX RF, what I suggested will
allow him to have the RX ANT Beverage applied to both Main and Sub without
an external splitter (by using the one internal to the K3).His description
is incomplete. Whether he has a KXV3, whether he has a KAT3 and how the
KRX3 is wired internally (to AUX RF or to KAT3's ANT2 input) are all unknown
but necessary to answer his question. Hopefully the K3 manual descriptions
on pages 40-42 of the four different KANT3/KAT3/KXV3 combinations will be
enough for him to figure it out himself.

1. I use TLF (ncurses-based), which is designed for contesting but
works for me for general logging as well. Xlog is good if you want a
GUI.

2. Hamlib, which provides the hooks to work with other software
(supported by many different programs).

3. Fldigi. This will work with hamlib but also will control rigs
using supplied xml files. It also does logging.

Use stereo speaker !!
You can then use both ears for both receivers with
individual volume control.
Place the speakers as you wish for best spatial readability.

TNX a lot to all for your answer.
Main use of it is 160m with 2 beverage and one K3 with second receiver
and without RX Input.
With this... we want listen the beverage conected to aux input and tx on
  the 160m vertical.
Problem this evening was that we only could listen the second receiver
in the right side.
We will have to use the hardware solution.

I'm still not 100% sure what you are attempting to do but there may be a way
without an external splitter.

1. Connect your Beverage to RX ANT.
2. HOLD RX ANT to toggle Sub to MAIN.
3. You will TX on ANT1 and both RXs will use your Beverage on RX ANT via
the
internal splitter inside the K3.
4. If you want the RX ANT on both ears, go into DIVERSTY and SPLIT. You
will
TX on the VFO frequency B and RX (both receivers) on VFO frequency A.

I use an external splitter so I can feed my Beverage to RX ANT AND AUX RF.
Then I can choose both RXs on the Beverage, both RXs on the TX antenna or
one
on each in DIVERSTY. Here's a previous summary:

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2008-November/099738.html

Although a Magic-T splitter is preferred, you could also use a simple T if
you
have connected AUX RF to your KRX3.
