2009-06-29 Thread pd0psb

Same situation over here David.

Even in items about CB or pirate music transmitters the media misuses the
term radio-amateur.
If you say a technical/regulations exam is mandatory for this hobby people
are highly surprised.
Why do you need that to play deejay on the air?

Even to the local authorities you have to explain putting up an antenna
(which has restrictions here) is not for transmitting music

Good commercial btw Eric, nice close ups of the brand label!
And a well chosen contrast with the other eh.HF thingy. :-)

[Elecraft] Headphone distribution amp/splitter which was mentioned a short while back...

Greetings fellow Elecrafters...

A while back, maybe 2-3 weeks ago anyway, someone (in EU, if I recall) posted
a link to a headphone amp/splitter box which they're recently purchased.

I visited the link, but seem to have lost it in the hubbub of getting ready
for Field Day 2009... BUT I's really like to find the link again.

Actually, I;m not all that interested in THAT device, but it included info on

has anybody compared a new 8-pole 500Hz filter from INRAD

a 8-pole filter in main RX and 5-pole in 2nd RX. Could there
be any problems due to different offsets?

[Elecraft] Using K2 for both QRP 100 Watts

2009-06-29 Thread KG3VTomZ
I have been using my K2 exclusively in the 100W configuration. I now want
to have the option of taking just the base radio and using it stand-alone
for QRP, but without compromising my normal use with the KPA100. I have
separated the KPA100 in the case with the antenna tuner.

I am consideinr adding the KAT2 tuner to the base radio. I see that you use
the ANT 1/2 switch with the KAT2 for antenna selection on the QRP radio.
Can I stil use this switch to select between my 2 antennas on the 100 Watt
tuner (when I am bypassing the KAT2)?

This is true.
I am looking at the connectors on my Proset-K2 and it has an 1/8 stereo
connector for headphones and an 1/8 mono connector for the mic. I have
no idea where the 1/8 to 1/4 headphone adapter went, don't really need it.
The interface cable converts the 1/8 mono mic connector to an 8 pin
foster. There is an 1/8 headphones connector and a PTT/foot switch
connector (1/4 female) as well.

Re: [Elecraft] Using K2 for both QRP 100 Watts

2009-06-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tom,

That is taken care of automatically. If both the KAT2 and the KPA100
are detected, the KAT2 is set to ANT1 and cannot be changed until the
KPA100 is removed.
Of course, if both the KPA100 and KAT100 are connected to a K2 having
the KAT2 also, the ANT1/2 switch works, but it refers to the antenna
jacks on the KAT100 - the KAT2 will still be set to ANT1.

What all this means is that you connect the RF Path from the K2 to the
KPA100 at the ANT1 jack.

Behringer - They really bug me. Sorry to say it, but I do. They bug me
because they have a history of stealing other people's designs (Mackie,

way things appear and there is a history of law suits which suggests
others have the same opinion.

They bug me because their gear really does work well for less money. I
have (had) 2 mixers, one was Behringer. My rack compressor is
Behringer. So is my parametric EQ. Our church has Behringer
compressors as well. We have a headphone distribution amp - yep,
Behringer. I compared the Behringer EQ to a Rane EQ and the Behringer
was better. I compared the Behringer 2 channel compressor to a DBX 2

I'm no lawyer but reading the regulations here:

http://www.fcc.gov/oet/info/rules/part15/PART15_07-10-08.pdf

I see this:

Scanning Receiver. For the purpose of this part,
this is a receiver that automatically switches among four or more
frequencies in the range of 30 to 960 MHz and which is capable
of stopping at and receiving a radio signal detected on a frequency.
Receivers designed solely for the reception of the broadcast signals
under part 73 of this chapter or for operation as part of a licensed
station are not included in this definition.

My interpretation is that my K3 is part of the equipment at N7WS, an FCC
licensed station, and is exempt from the regulation.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Headphone Splitter/Amp

2009-06-29 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
There's an old saying about the cheap comes out the more expensive...

If you're interested in expanding your Ham horizons into homebrewing, a
headphone distribution amplifier has to be just about the most forgiving,
inexpensive and simple project one might consider. Most radio/electronics
handbooks have many examples and there are dozens of circuits and kits on
the 'net.

Just about any headphone amplifier with a relatively high impedance input
(and that's 99.9% of them) can be set up in groups with the inputs
paralleled to provide independently adjustable gain outputs.

Nice article!

The only thing (besides initial price levels) that kept me away from SDR
based designs for a long time is computer generated interference. That's
also why the K3 shines as stand alone SDR.

It seems though computers/switching PSU's are finally becoming less RF
noisy, making SDR much more usefull. (Perseus/netbook alongside K3 here with
lineair power supplies giving virtually no interference)

However, why should it matter? I personally always use normal CW.

Using the CW offset feature to go from SSB CW modes . Works as
advertised.

However when I click on a spot when in CW mode to go to USB something is
odd:
Example:
In CW mode at 50.110
Click on spot on 50.125
Radio goes to USB mode at 50.124.47 -- 50.125 minus CW offset of 530 Hz.

Re: [Elecraft] Interesting Read: Dinosaur Concepts - why are we always so conservative?

2009-06-29 Thread Paul - WW2PT

However, the radio hobby industry perseveres with narrow-band design
concepts even to
the present day - usually with automatically-switched front-end BPF's, the
rare exception
being the tracking preselectors in the pioneering JRC NRD-545 (1998).

Not to quibble over details but JRC's varactor-tuned front end filters
predated the NRD-545 by 12 years and two models -- it debuted (at least in
their amateur receiver line) with the NRD-525 in 1986 and was carried over
to the NRD-535 in 1991. It was also incorporated in the JST-135 and
JST-145/245 treansceivers, both of which also preceded the NRD-545 by years.
(Not sure about the JST-125, never did get my paws on one of them...)

Re: [Elecraft] V3.19

2009-06-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
Brian,

I have no answer on the incorrect frequency, but
CWrev is upper sideband. I guess that is the main reason CW rev is
required.
If you are going from CW normal, there would have to be twice the CW
offset figured in. That may be your 'wrong frequency' answer - the K3
compensates for the CW offset only once, not two times the offset.

[Elecraft] FD with K3 #1826

2009-06-29 Thread Phil and Christina
I ran a 1B field day station in my north meadow this weekend using my 9
month old K3. I had thought that I would use my K2 instead for its lower
current consumption, since I was using batteries and a solar panel. I
couldn't give up the K3 performance and features however, so I went with
that. Power was from a pair of 75 Ah deep cycle lead acid batteries and the
surplus solar panel (probably in the 15W range). I generally ran the TX at
about 60 to 70 watts to save some current. I used the first battery until I
went to bed around 0830Z. I swapped the batteries when I got up in the
morning at about 1400Z. The power setup and rig worked great. At the
lowest point for the first battery, the rig showed about 11.9 to 12V key up
and 11.5V transmitting - the rig worked fine at that point. I operated SSB
exclusively so that my wife could help with the duping (I paper logged since
I don't have a suitable laptop).

I really took advantage of the rigs interference fighting ability to pull
weaker stations out from under the often serious splatter from the stronger
stations (there were quite a few really bad sounding signals on the air - we
need a campaign to teach hams how to adjust their rigs!). 20M was a wall of
noise at times but the K3 worked right through it. I used my tall
Douglas-fir trees to support two wire antennas. One was an extended double
Zepp for 40M that worked great on 80 and 40. The other was the 3 5/8 wave
collinear beam described in the July 2009 QST (cut for 20M). It worked well
on the eastern path that gave me good coverage from the northern states to
the southeastern states. I would recommend this antenna for those wanting
good bi-directional gain in a fixed direction.

I am very glad that I used the K3. It is a great FD rig!

Re: [Elecraft] Interesting Read: Dinosaur Concepts - why are we always so conservative?

2009-06-29 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Right now the cheapest and most powerful tool in most designer's arsenal is
digital signal processing and digital control systems.

Remember the old saying, When all you have is a hammer, everything begins
to look like a nail.

We humans are designed to process and analyze analog data, not digital data.
That's why we love pictures and graphs but can't make sense out of the
racket of a raw digital signal fed to an audio transducer. All of our senses
work with analog inputs.

The fastest computers I ever used are still among the fastest today at the
tasks they are designed for, and that was back in the 1960's. They were
analog computers.

Digital systems became popular in recent decades because the hardware became
absurdly cheap, both in cost and energy demand. With this technology, one
can take an absurd brute force approach to a problem, including going to
extremes trying to produce an analog output humans can work with
efficiently, and come up with an acceptable result at an acceptable price
(aided by an overwhelming amount of marketing saying if it's digital it's
better!).

But just considering the millions of active devices and the huge number of
lines of code it takes to accomplish even a simple task shows just what a
brute force solution digital systems are today, especially when one
realizes that 99.9% of the same results can be had with a handful of analog
parts and one or two active devices.

What we haven't done over the past few decades is develop analog
technologies that can be cookie-cutter stamped out by the billions at
cheaply as digital integrated circuits.

It is true that digital systems are amazingly valuable and useful but, like
Alley Oop's stone axe in Moo, because they're invaluable today doesn't mean
they aren't just a stop gap until we develop a more efficient technology
better adapted to our analog senses.

In the meantime there are those right here who prefer a K2 or K1 to a K3.
And many who prefer an older vacuum tube rig to any of those. They aren't
just 'conservative' or 'dinosaurs'. Many, perhaps most, are just
connoisseurs of good analog signal processing which, for their purposes,
they find better than even the best of today's digital systems.

Hey Gang,
I read online yesterday that it may be that the K2 control PCB Rev-B
might have incorporated the side-tone audio filter somewhere in advance
of the LM380N chip, to produce a waveform closer to sine-wave.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Is there anyway of getting to look at a silk-screen pic for this board?

[Elecraft] Problem with K3 #353 at Field Day

2009-06-29 Thread James R. Kauten, MD
We had 3 K-3’s at our field day QTH this year. Two worked flawlessly,
however, mine; #353 developed some front panel issues. I have had no
problems with my K3 prior to this. The rig would work as usual for a
period of time then with no error messages; the front panel controls
would not function normally. Here is a summary of what happens:

Band—cannot switch bands up or down
Mode—cannot switch mode
Menu and Disp—do not work
Xmit and ATU tune-- do not work
RX Antàturns on NB
Antàturns on NR
All potentiometers work
Push function of 4 knobs, shift, width, speed/mic, and CMP/PWR do not
work
VFO A knob—changes VFO A
VFO B knob—changes VFO B
A/B, REV, AàB—do not work
PREàturns on notch, toggles between auto and manual
AGCàplays contents of M3 voice keyer when on SSB
Xfilàshows M1—M4 in display window
NB, NR, NTCH—do not work
SPOT—toggles between LO/HI and Shift/Width (shows LO and FC)
CWT—toggles PWR and CMP settings in display
AFX—toggles between LO/HI and Shift/Width (shows HI and BW)
VàM, MàV—do not work
M1, M2, M3, M4, REC—do not work
RIT, XIT, CLR—do not work
None of the long press functions work (yellow labels)

I can power the rig off and on. The rig will intermittently begin
working properly for a while then the front panel repeats what is
described above. We had to remove this rig from the operating
position 20 minutes before the start of field day. Heat is not a
problem as we were in an air-conditioned room and we had not been
generating RF.

I am running firmware version 3.19 and reloaded it after the first
time the front panel locked. I have looked through the manual but see
no mention of these phenomena.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 on FD

2009-06-29 Thread Joe Planisky
I'll throw in another plug for the K2. This was my first FD in over
30 years. I ran my K2 as a 1B/Battery/QRP/CW station out of my camper
for the duration. This was the first time I'd spent quality time
with my K2 since getting my K3 almost a year ago. I'd forgotten what
a sweet little rig the K2 is:

 - Small...: Easily sat on a corner of the tiny table in my camper
with plenty of room left over for logs and dupe sheets.

 - ... but not TOO small: Never had a problem operating the
controls or finding the right button.

 - Easy to feed 1: Over 18 hours actual operating time on a single
12AH battery. Could have gone longer, but I ran out of juice before
the battery did.

 - Easy to feed 2: I literally found a hunk of wire in the garage
and threw it into a tree for an antenna. The KAT2 was able to tune it
to 1.5:1 on 80, 40, and 20. Not a great performer, but still let me
work stations from Alaska to Indiana on 5w.

 - Great performance.

I'm really glad I didn't succumb to the temptation to sell it after
getting the K3.

[Elecraft] K3 #1170 at Field Day

2009-06-29 Thread Brad Johnson
The K3 was a hit a Field day, particularly among the CW guys. The
phone guys liked it as well.

A couple of guys here gave me a tip about temporarily changing the
KPA3 menu to allow for constant fan operation. Temps were over 100
degrees Saturday afternoon. The rig fared better than most of the ops,
it seems.

I noticed when I set the K3 back up in the shack that the PWR was set
to 8W. The last time I checked it was at 100W. It is easy to
inadvertently change settings on those multi function buttons.

The only issue of note that presented itself was the low audio output
of both the headphone and speaker jacks. We tried several different
speakers and I confirmed that the SPKRS menu was at 1 and that the AF
GAIN was HI.

At home this hasn't been an issue as my shack is pretty quiet and I
use a pair of Bose amplified computer speakers.

With the high level of ambient noise at the FD site, I found myself
turning the AF to maximum or near maximum with either the external
speaker and the BM10 headset I was using. Engaging the DSP attenuated
the audio so much, it wasn't useable at anything above the F*-1
settings.

I arrived at a solution by plugging the BM-10 headset into the speaker
jack on the rear panel. This resulted in sufficient audio drive and I
was able to use the headset at about 50% gain.

I have seen mention of significant audio attenuation with DSP engaged
and loss of speaker/headphone output. Is the low audio output perhaps
a symptom of the same issue?

Re: [Elecraft] V3.19

2009-06-29 Thread N2TK
Yep, same problem here with DXBase. Whenever I hit a callout and the mode is
different than where the K3 is at, the offset comes into play whether I am
going to SSB or CW. Once I am in a mode, say CW and I select another callout
everything is fine.

If I double click a callout when switching modes everything is fine.

This all happens only if the Auto CW VFO offset on mode change is on.

Not a big problem once you get used to it.

[Elecraft] K2 #6708 Speaks

2009-06-29 Thread David Heinsohn
Hello All

At 1717Z today, K2 Serial nr 6708 spoke it's first words. My thanks
to KA9S, Jeff, for answering my VERY poorly sent CQ, on what seemed to
be a dead band.

I finally got back to building again early this month and got the last
of the soldering done this weekend. Today I did the 40 mtr final
alignment and testing. Everything went without a hitch. I sent a few
TEST' signals to myself on the 706. It sounded really sweet. (The 40
mtr ant the K2 was using crosses 12 under the 160 mtr dipole the 706
was using. I expected massive overload of the 706 but it did ok.
Conversly the K2 had no trouble dealing with the 706s signal even with
the ATT off.

Now on to the rest of the tune up procedure. But first the cover goes
on and I take it with us to visit my dad, WA0ZWW. The visit is for
other purposes, but he'll enjoy seeing the new rig!.

73, es TNX to the folks at Elecraft for the fun I've had so far.

[Elecraft] FOUND - Link to the headphone splitter/amp...!

2009-06-29 Thread Tom Hammond
Thanks to all who replied.

The link I was looking for was:

http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/HA400.aspx

And now, hopefully, I'll be able to retrace my steps to finding the link to
the other op amp which is supposed to be much more robust in this type of
service.

Thanks again folks.

73,

Tom

[Elecraft] HI RFI Message - what to do?

2009-06-29 Thread Lee Buller
If you have been reading the reflector for the past couple of days, the K3 we
were using got a HI RFI message on the screen. Yes, the books says that
someone is feeding the K3 more RF than it needs in the antenna terminals. The
books states 1 or 2 watts is all that it will take.

Yes, this is exactly what happened. The K3 was on 7040 and the Orion was on
3520. Each were on a horizontal antenna and we were no where near 1000 feet
apart. The 2nd harmonic got the K3. Many people emailed me and said D25 is
blown and it is an easy fix. That is OK...things like this will happen. (It
was not my K3, but)

What do you do if you get the message Turn off the rig immediately? Or, is
it to late by the time you get the message? What is the parameter that the CPU
is looking at when you get the message and how much time is there to do
something? Or, should be keep some pin switching diodes in the shack from
quick repair?

The book is very unclear as to what all this means. What to do. Or any more
information that what I've already stated. I wonder if this could be clarified
a little by Wayne or Eric concerning front end issues in a FD type setting. I
know the Multi-Multi guys figure this out, but heck FD is just about a free for
all.

A shorted 1/4 wl stub (~46' of Vf 0.66 coax) on the Orion 80m output would
have given ~30 dB of attenuation on 40m. For best results stubs should be
tuned to exact resonance using an analyzer (most tell you how to do this).

[Elecraft] K3s in 105F Field Day heat at K5WA

2009-06-29 Thread K5WA
Both K3s in our 2A effort worked flawlessly in the 105F degree humid heat of
southern Texas. We even ran RTTY and I saw the PA temp hitting 61C with no
ill effects. We used N1MM and the integrated MMTTY interface to knock out
109 RTTY contacts, 1535 CW contacts and 608 SSB contacts. With bonus
points included, we'll be in the 8800 point scoring range.

Next year, we need to find a way to air condition our tents! ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] HI RFI Message - what to do?

2009-06-29 Thread Mel Farrer
I like Bill's answer for a fixed multi-station setup.  Not good enough for a
roughly controlled enviornment of FD. Or when a friend drives up to your house
running a KW mobile.

I think the bottom line is what the receiver front end was designed to handle
and how much head room there is from that point to HI RFI message TO the point
of failure of the front end device.  It would be nice to know these numbers.
But Alass, we are confronted with the age old saying, when in doubt, protect
thy self with back to back Hot carrier diodes on the receiver.  This doesn't
mean this solution won't have possible intermod problems in fringe high RF
enviornments of FD, but you won't lose a front end.  FWTW.

[Elecraft] K3 #1195 at Field Day

2009-06-29 Thread Nick-WA5BDU
This K3 is 25 serial number units and 25 miles from the K3 Brad posted
about earlier. So it was pretty hot here too. Supposedly a record
temperature for the date, last set in 1952. That's one Field Day record
I didn't want to set.

I kept moving equipment around on my table to keep direct sun off the K3
and laptop. I was afraid to even look at the heat sink and FP temperatures.

My K3 survived and showed no heat related issues even though I kept it
QSOing or CQing at 100W CW for long periods. The main issue I had was
strong RF fields, and I've had that about every FD regardless of rig.
It was more an N1MM thing, as N1MM would hang up with key down if I
tried to send from the log. Well, laptop thing really. So I did most
of my sending with the paddle, which I didn't really mind since I miss
using my paddle in some of these contests.

One surprising thing though was that the K3's internal memory keyer
would stick too. That didn't make any sense since I was using the
paddle (K3 internal keyer) with no issues. The rig would lock into
transmit mode with sidetone ON, but no RF output. Eventually I fixed
the USB to serial dongle with three split ferrites, two passes each, and
the N1MM plus the K3's memory keyer began working fine. Go figure.

I had the same issue with not enough audio. I blamed it on the fact
that I was using a pair of small stereo speakers, and hi-fi speakers can
be pretty inefficient. I also went to the extreme of making sure the
gain setting was on high. I used the internal speaker some and got
plenty of volume, but it's pretty raspy, especially under FD pileup
conditions. I think too that under open air outside conditions, you
want more audio than you need in a small room. I always had the
headphones handy when needed though.

The overall performance of the rig under crowded conditions was very
good. I have both the 400 Hz and 200 Hz filters and previously didn't
think the 200 had much value to me, but it proved useful in digging out
weak ones and also when SPing through crowded band segments.

We had two CW ops at our site. I did 14 hours and the other fellow did
10 and we wound up with 761 Qs and 74 of 80 sections (even though they
don't count). The antenna we used was a 180 foot dipole, center at 45
feet or so with 450 ohm line feeder through a Johnson Matchbox on all
bands.

Oh yeah, other evidence of RF problems, I got shocked once touching the
brass base of my paddle and again grabbing a knob on the K3. That
surprised me until I saw that the path was shaft thru set screw to finger.

Re: [Elecraft] Problem with K3 #353 at Field Day

2009-06-29 Thread David Y.
Jim,

Is the K3 working correctly again now that you have it back home??? If so,
I would question the power setup used on Field Day. Did you happen to check
the voltages the K3 was seeing? Lots of times on Field Day power
connections are questionable. The K3 does not like low voltages, which can
often be the case on an outing like that. The fact that the other K3's
worked O.K. may not be indicative, since you may have had a different
connection setup, or even been on a different power connection.

Just a thought!

Subject: [Elecraft] Problem with K3 #353 at Field Day

We had 3 K-3’s at our field day QTH this year. Two worked flawlessly,
however, mine; #353 developed some front panel issues. I have had no
problems with my K3 prior to this. The rig would work as usual for a
period of time then with no error messages; the front panel controls
would not function normally. Here is a summary of what happens:

Band—cannot switch bands up or down
Mode—cannot switch mode
Menu and Disp—do not work
Xmit and ATU tune-- do not work
RX Antàturns on NB
Antàturns on NR
All potentiometers work
Push function of 4 knobs, shift, width, speed/mic, and CMP/PWR do not
work
VFO A knob—changes VFO A
VFO B knob—changes VFO B
A/B, REV, AàB—do not work
PREàturns on notch, toggles between auto and manual
AGCàplays contents of M3 voice keyer when on SSB
Xfilàshows M1—M4 in display window
NB, NR, NTCH—do not work
SPOT—toggles between LO/HI and Shift/Width (shows LO and FC)
CWT—toggles PWR and CMP settings in display
AFX—toggles between LO/HI and Shift/Width (shows HI and BW)
VàM, MàV—do not work
M1, M2, M3, M4, REC—do not work
RIT, XIT, CLR—do not work
None of the long press functions work (yellow labels)

I can power the rig off and on. The rig will intermittently begin
working properly for a while then the front panel repeats what is
described above. We had to remove this rig from the operating
position 20 minutes before the start of field day. Heat is not a
problem as we were in an air-conditioned room and we had not been
generating RF.

I am running firmware version 3.19 and reloaded it after the first
time the front panel locked. I have looked through the manual but see
no mention of these phenomena.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 Fab Drawings

2009-06-29 Thread Brett Howard
Is there a place somewhere that provides the drawings of the Fabs so
that one can look at the schematic and then find the part w/o digging
into the boards?

Things such as this D25 issue. Once you hear about them roasting with
too much RF in then it makes a person think that it would be a good idea
to have one or two on hand and know where they are... But once you find
a part its somewhat of a pain to go stare searching for them inside the
radio...

[Elecraft] [K3] KPA3 mounting screw

2009-06-29 Thread w4sec
Good evening,
While installing the KPA module in my freshly built K3, I noticed the inside
tooth washer on one of the mounting screws fastening the PA module to the
screen comes perilously close to a trace. It is the screw closest to a board
mounted trimmer, and the trace comes from a to-220 device. Is there something I
overlooked, or is this a non issue? I didn't see anything on a basic search of
the archives
Thanks,

2009-06-29 Thread Jay Bromley
Hi Pete,
That is version C KPA3. I commented on that and sent pictures to the
support team a few weeks back.

Yes either they need to go back to the other design or just use an split
washer instead of the inside tooth washer.

I choose to keep the inside tooth washers and just push it work all it was
worth with my finger nail. I got it stuck the first time and had to loosen
the screw to free myself. :-)

The old PA didn't have this problem as the trace was move closer to the edge
of the board.
