[Elecraft] K2 VCO Alignment problem

2009-10-22 Thread Robert Greenwalt
Hi

I've worked my way through assembling my k2 and I've reached a problem:
 Everything seems fine until the 4000 kHz, R30 -> 6V alignment of L30.  I
can only reach 5.65V. I have verified D23-26 are the right part, oriented
correctly. I have verified D21-22 are the right part and oriented
correctly. I've counted wires entering the center of T5 (16 and 4). I have
verified the all the caps in VFO and VFO Range Selection (except C75, which
is missing in my version).

Searching the web I find lots of info about what to do if the voltage
doesn't vary and lots of hints about what to check if the voltage is too
high. Any suggestions if the left side of R30 varies from 1.87V up to
5.65V?

Oh - and a separate K2 question - my flip-down tilt stand metal piece seems
too wide for the width of the feet: the plastic feet that get bolted to the
base end up 12.7 cm apart but the bent metal piece is about 14 cm wide at
the corresponding part. I expect some spring, but I'm having trouble
compressing it enough to fit and I wonder if this is normal..

Thanks

Robert (K6RJG)

Don,

Well, with egg on face ...

When I went to try your last suggestion, the K2 gave me a low battery
indication and would go no further. I did a short recharge and the CAL
PLL procedure is running as expected.

Sorry to have bothered you with this, but thanks for your help.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2: VFO aware?

2009-10-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
Brian,

If by "TX VFO" you mean the band of operation, then the answer is yes.
If you mean the frequency within a band, then the answer is that the
output of the KRC2 will be the same throughout any one band.

2009-10-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gary,

OK, it may be C71 - my memory is not perfect and I don't have access to
the schematics here while on vacation.
Plug the internal counter probe into TP1 and check the frequency with
CAL FCTR. If you are tuned to 7100 kHz, the counter should read close
to 12015 kHz.

You might also want to re-check the PLL Reference oscillator range
(probe in TP3).

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #6815 - VFO Linearization CAL PLL Info 232

2009-10-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gary,

Since you are using the Rework Eliminators, did you add the Rework
eliminator for the K60XV and add D19 and D20 as well as change the value
of C73? from 82 pF to 120 pF? If so, you must follow the instruction to
set the secondary menu parameter for D19 to "y". Failure to do that
will result in an incorrect VFO frequency on 40 meters, with a resulting
failure for CAL PLL. All that is despite the fact that the displayed
frequency says it is on the 40 meter band - it actually is not.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 Antenna Tuner Tutorial

2009-10-22 Thread Bill K9YEQ
Windy,

I usually push the ATU tune whenever I change bands but have never relied
upon the tuner to manage.

Here's the manual:

ATU (KAT3)
If you have the KAT3 antenna tuner installed, you
can select ANT1 or ANT2 by tapping ANT .
Hold ATU to select AUTO (autotune enabled) or
BYPASS. If the ATU icon is on, the antenna can
be matched for best SWR by tapping ATU TUNE .
Up to 30 ATU settings are saved for both antennas
on every band. The ATU icon will flash briefly
whenever new settings are automatically loaded.
Tapping ATU TUNE a second time within 5
seconds of a match attempt will retry using a more
extensive search. This may improve the match
when using high-SWR or narrow-band loads.

I don't believe this answers the question as to when the tuner invokes an
automatic retune, however.

Sure Bill. When feedline is wet, I alter some band segments by
retuning as needed, as I operate. Then when dry, I encounter the re-
tuned segments again when I encounter a high-SWR after I QSY. So then
I re-tune, of course. As far as I can observe, that seems to wipe out
the "wet" setting that was recorded at some nearby frequency. Seems
OK. I just have to accept that I don't know where the segments are,
and so I keep an eye on the SWR when I QSY (normal habit anyway).

I'll await any more helpful info from the creators. I accept that it
may be simple "just keep doing what you are doing". It isn't a
problem, I'll await any further understanding of the rules that the
ATU memories follow.

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 Diversity Receive

2009-10-22 Thread Joe G

I am in the process of setting up a diversity receive configuration with the
subreceiver. I usually run about 600 watts. All my antennas are
horizontally polarized; an E-W 160M Carolina Windom, a N-S Carolina Windom
and a tri-bander yagi

Can any one give me some guidelines about suggested physical separations
between antennas ?

[Elecraft] Elecraft email List Official Guidelines [Sept 2009]

2009-10-22 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Elecraft Mail LIST GUIDELINES [Sept. 2009]

For those of you who are new to the list, (and for those of us who have
rapidly failing memories..), here is a quick list of things to remember when
posting to this list. Please save this for future reference.

The most important thing to remember is that this is only a hobby - Let's
have fun! The PRIMARY purposes of this list are to provide a forum for
discussing Elecraft products, share mods, new ideas, feedback to Elecraft, share
troubleshooting ideas etc.

1. YOU MUST BE SUBSCRIBED to the [Elecraft] list TO POST to it. (This is
done to stop advertising spammers from hitting the list.) Any postings sent
to elecraft@mailman.qth.net by addresses different from the exact ones it
shows as subscribers will be rejected.

This includes alias (forwarded) addresses like w1...@arrl.net. If you use an
alias to subscribe you must have it as your from: and return address too.
Subscribing with w...@arrl.net from your physical address of
j...@aol.com will allow you to receive postings, but your postings to
the list will be rejected if their from: and reply to: address does not
match your subscribe address..

Go to http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft to subscribe and to
change your list preferences. To unsubscribe or to change your list
preferences (digest, no mail on/off etc.), scroll to the bottom of the page
and log in with your subscribed email address and the password that was sent
to you by email when you subscribed (and monthly afterwards.)

2. If you want to provide an attachment, .JPG picture or other large
file for use on the list, first post it to your personal web
page and then post a link to its address in an email to the list. The list
strips all attachments to prevent viruses from propagating and to keep
the archives at a reasonable size.

3. Please keep the amount of copied text from previous posts to an
-ABSOLUTE MINIMUM- in your replies.

Always delete -everything- from the prior
post except what is necessary to keep your reply in context. Most copied
messages can be reduced to one or two sentences to retain context. Remember to
delete the email list footer from the previous post and especially avoid
copying a long posting and adding 'Me Too!' or something similar. As the
number of users on this list grows (over 1500 now) we need to work to minimize
information overload... If a reply is -not- of interest to the list, just
reply directly to the posting party.

4. EMAIL OVERLOAD:
If you are overloaded by the volume of individual messages on the list,
You can view the daily Elecraft list messages for each month in web
format at: http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html . These archives are updated
hourly and list postings by subject. (the nabble archive looks very useful.)
Just click on the ones you are interested in to read.

You can also set your Elecraft list email preferences to 'no mail' delivery,
which still allows you to post to the list when reading via the digest.

You can also change your subscription to the DIGEST version, which sends you a
single compilation each day.

To change your email list options or to subscribe / unsubscribe, go to:
http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft
Scroll to the bottom of the page to log into your preferences page and set
your mail options to 'no mail'.

4a. Please make an effort to keep list volume under control by resisting the
urge to post a comment on every long discussion thread (CW, Soldering etc.) With
close to 3,500 list subscribers volume can quickly get out of control if
everyone feels the need to comment. While we do not overly restrict the subject
matter on this list, please remember that its primary focus is on Elecraft
products, and their use. Many people rely on it for pointers on building and
troubleshooting their kits. Other ham Radio topics are OK, but please keep the
posts on non-Elecraft topics under control.

4b. *** [NEW] When emailing about a specific rig or option, please add the
rig/option name(s) to the first part of your email subject line. (K1, K2, K3,
KX1 etc.) This will be a huge help for those experiencing email overload and
will allow automatic filtering based on subject line.

Examples: "Subject: [K3] Filter Options"
"Subject: [KX1] How to use ped portable?"
"Subject: [XG2] Wow! Its a big help.

5. *** IMPORTANT - PLEASE KEEP ALL POSTINGS CORDIAL.

Restrain the urge to email someone admonishing them about a posting.
The last thing we want to do is to scare anyone off the list. Overly aggressive
postings and negative comments about other posters only serve to scare away new
potential list members.

Waiting over night before hitting 'send' really helps to put things in
perspective.. ;-)

If you have a complaint about someone or a thread please email it directly
to me ( eric(at)elecraft.com ) and I'll address it.

5a. Please do not post publicly or privately asking people to stop a particular
thread, no matter how long, off topic or repetitive it g

[Elecraft] [K3] swr anomaly

2009-10-22 Thread O. Johns
Folks,

Did the Xmtr power alignment with utility version 1.2.9.30 and
firmware version 3.44. Used the BL2 balun connected directly to the
Ant1 port of the K3, using only straight-through adapters and no
cable. The five watt calibration ran to completion and all was well.
BUT, after the calibration, I find that pressing and holding TUNE with
the ATU in bypass mode now gives a swr of 1.1. Before the
calibration, it always gave 1.0. I know this is a small point, since
1.1 and 1.0 are only negligibly different. But it bothers me,
aesthetically.

Anyone have any idea how to fine-tune the swr reading on the K3? I
recall that on the K2, you adjusted the balance to do this. But on
the K3? Seems that since the K3 was aligned using the BL2 as its
reference, the BL2 should show 1.0 swr. Not so?

Yes, and it is a quite poorly done article with various procedural
errors and measurement inconsistencies. I recommend you ignore it. See

Re: [Elecraft] k3 50Hz background noise

2009-10-22 Thread Igor Sokolov
The problem is solved. I thought I have to share with others what worked
best or us. This solution came from Gary N7IR.

Try a few sheets of thin low carbon steel (in US called mild steel)
insulated from each other by sheets of printer paper. Put this sandwich in
between and parallel to the K3 and the rotator controller. That should
knock it down by many 10's of dB if it is magnetic coupling. Make sure that
the sheets are as long as the case of K3 and twice as tall. Also make sure
the sheets don't touch either case. I've used this technique many times in
my professional life and it works every time.

Thank you Gary and thanks to all for alternative suggestions

Your feedline impedance changes when wet and the memory will change in the
tuner. I would expect that is quite normal and a good thing!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio Volume

2009-10-22 Thread Tom Hammond
Gary:

NEXT TIME it occurs, and BEFORE you do anything
else, find a signal and not the S-meter
reading. THEN re-cycle whatever must be recycled
to obtain the expected audio output level and
THEN re-check the S-meter. If the signal level
has not changed, then the problem is (most
probably) in the AF section. If the signal is now
reading higher on the S-meter, then the problem is RF-related.

Dale, I suspect that in Windy's case moisture could be entering via tiny
holes drilled in the dielectric by windblown sand or dust. Unfortunately I
cannot offer any practical solution to prevent this happening, because I do
not use window line.

4 wire open wire feeder behaves like a lovesick octopus unless kept under
tension. A very useful type of low cost feeder for long low loss horizontal
runs at HF and VHF though.

Geoff has touched on what may be happening. I've seen this on my systems
here too... and the issue comes down to the material, in this case mud or
water and dust... collecting on the feeder, then as the moisture drys away,
the change in transmission line characteristics also change. There are a
whole page of math equations and figures that prove this, but suffice it to
say for now, that open wire, doesn't have this issue... it has others...
more physical, like how to keep it spaced and installed correctly.
Retuning isn't a real problem, it is pretty much just adjusting for what

[Elecraft] 3.44 Beta

2009-10-22 Thread David Robertson
Julian and All,

When operating in PSK mode and having the K3 in DATA A mode I had no RF output
I noticed there was no ALC bars at all indicating no audio present from the
computer. Turning up the K3 Mic gain (line in on data modes) there was no
increased bar indication indicating no audio in from the computer. Returning
the K3 mic gain (line input) to the correct value and switching the K3 mode to
USB, then back to DATA A mode produced both the ALC bars and RF out. When I
transmit it takes about 15 to 20 seconds for the K3 to adjust the RF out to the
correct value.

When I operate using the USB mode with 3.44 installed (requireing selection of
line input and eliminating any compression) the K3 responces very well and only
takes between 1 to 3 seconds to adjust power out.

During all of this no adjustments to the computer's audio out were made.

Reinstalling 3.42 firmware eliminates any problems in DATA A mode.

I will run more tests later as I have a ton of leaves to rake.

What sort of arrangement are you using to connect the feeder to the antenna?

Do you get a lot of wind-blown dust / sand during the dry weather, some of

[Elecraft] Diversity?

2009-10-22 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
I'm preparing for the CQ-WW-SSB and would like to play with diversity.

We have:
 1 K3 with sub-rx.
 1 K3 with sub-rx plus Transverter-board (my own)
2 yagis for the higher bands.
 1 loop for 80m (local)
 1 GAP Voyager for 160/80/40
1 shunt fed tower for 160

No KAT3 in either K3.

How to route the antennas?

Martin
