[Elecraft] K3 in ARRL10
Hello, well, I read some emails here about K3 performance in 10 mts band but really I never tested it carefully. We started ARRL10 with the K3, very poor condx in the morning, good in the afternoon. Second day in the morning we didn´t heard any signal in 10 mts. Some of the guest operators told me to listen in my TS850, the radio we used in the last 2-3 years that we did the ARRL10 from El Mangrullo. We heard two or three very weak signals from PY in the TS850 that were not heard in the K3..!, I didn´t want to assume that, I said for myself NOooo, after spending +$4.000.- on my fully K3 for contests!.. So I hope it´s all about that I don´t know how to use the K3. It has a lot of features that really I do not understand so I think (and hope) I am not doing a correct use of the K3. Any suggestions are very well apreciated. 73, Jorge CX6VM/CW5W __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] linking K3 with PC via blue tooth
It would remove the interference possibly conduited on the USB RS232 cable. It would remove the interference sometimes originating from the USB RS232 cable itself. It would remove the constantly meandering drivers being changed to accommodate yet another marginal application to the universal soup. Blue tooth MIGHT have the serious advantage of the crowd passing it by, leaving it alone to be STABLE, after the fashion of RS232, whose drivers are stable because nobody is developing to them any more, hence no need for change. Beyond that? Probably not much. Then there is the downside of possible issues with a given Bluetooth device, the undiscovered country, so to speak. An unknown enemy always seems more friendly than the known one you love to hate. 73, Guy. Re: [Elecraft] K3 in ARRL10
If these reports are correct, then additional I.F. gain isn't the answer. If weak signals aren't being heard, it's because the signal/noise (S/N) ratio isn't as good on 10 as it is with the comparison rig. If so, something's wrong with the K3 in question. It's simple to check a K3 for adequate S/N. If the background noise increases appreciably (3 dB or so) when the antenna is connected, using the same bandwidth, the K3 has all the S/N it can use. The rise in noise clearly indicates that the ability to hear weak signals is entirely limited by the band noise. If not, turn the K3 preamp on. The preamp is a low-noise amplifier that improves the S/N. As mentioned often before, it is a bad idea to use the preamp on bands where the above test shows it is not needed because it amplifies *all* signals coming into the K3. That means the K3's dynamic range (ability to handle big signals without creating artifacts) is reduced when the preamp is used. That reduction in dynamic range is often never noticed, but if a really strong signal is present on the band it might produce undesirable trash on the frequency of the desired signal. Because the band noise on 10 meters and frequencies down to 20 meters is so low, the preamp is typically used with any antenna on those bands unless the local noise level is unusually high. Also, the preamp might be used on the lower frequency bands when a very low-gain antenna, such as a mobile whip, is used in a r.f. quiet location. All the clocks and clock-generated sharp-edged waveforms will still be present... RFI often happens by more than one mechanism. Most RFI is radiated by conductors acting as antennas. Those conductors can be INSIDE the box, AND OUTSIDE the box. Also in general, the longer the wire, the better it is as an antenna at HF. When you reduce the number and length of wires connected to the box, or when you choke them to kill RF current on those wires, you take them out the picture, and are left with radiation from INSIDE the box due to its poor shielding (and poor circuit board layout). This radiated RF is picked up by the ham antenna, so the distances that matter are the distance between the noise source (computer) and that antenna. For example -- many laptops will radiate trash, especially on some of the higher HF bands via their power cable. If you remove the power cable and run them on battery, the trash sometimes goes away (or gets weaker). Nothing you can do with external cables will kill radiation from wiring inside the box, so when you choke the cables, that radiation will still be there (but weaker, because the antenna is shorter). RF trash can also be CONDUCTED via Pin One Problems in both ham gear and computers when they are interconnected. Pin One Problems put RF onto so-called ground contacts (for example, inside the computer at the serial or USB port), and Pin One Problems couple RF from an improper shield connection into the radio. For this mechanism, no antenna action is involved -- the RF is conducted on the cable shield because the shield is not properly connected on both ends. For a tutorial on the Pin One Problem, and how to deal with RFI, see http://audiosystemsgroup.com/publish.htm and http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf Another common coupling mechanism for RF trash is Pin One problems in TV sets and other consumer electronics putting that trash onto the shields of cables (like the CATV cable), where it is then radiated by the CATV system. 73, Jim Brown K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

And Barry reports that additional I.F. gain does help him on some signals, at least. Your reports suggest that something in the receiver chain is degrading the S/N ratio at lower signal levels. Re: [Elecraft] K3 in ARRL10
I operated the 10m contest this weekend with my K3 and I did have the preamp on. In that condition, I heard a lot more than apparently could hear me. If this could be quantified some way, perhaps we could get away from just comparing opinions? de W5OV Even though I do get a rise in band noise going from dummy load to antenna, I still hear weak signals on my 480 that I don't hear on the K3 on 10 meters SSB. Looking at manual INFO 230 is an error because i haven't connected the frequency counter on the BFO test poit (RF TP2). Is it absolutely neccessary? What is the right procedure? i have try to set the calibration using also the spectrogram softwareit works, but the K2 don't memorize my set... [Elecraft] [OT] The Thread of all Threads
This morning I got up and turned on the K3. I was shocked to find RFI from my Eveready flashlight on 7040, a birdie on 7160.1850192827354637, and with the noise blanker on I could hear splatter from my nextdoor neighbor's kilowatt at the bottom of the band. So I decided to update the firmware. The K3 locked up during the update. I had to power cycle everything four times. After the update, I could swear that the AFX started acting differently than before the update. Somebody told me it was my AGC settings. I started to try to measure the AGC response when I noticed that my filters were shifted and tilted. I phoned Inrad and exchanged my filters ten or eleven times until I got one that was flat with zero frequency shift. Something was still bothering me, so I hooked up my spectrum analyzer. Aha! Audio artifacts! These were solved easily by purchasing a pair of $9.95 headphones at Pic 'n' Save. While troubleshooting this, I happened to notice that my RS232-to-USB-to-waveguide-to-banana plugs-to-RS232 adapter was acting up. A search of the archives told me that the driver and the chips used in this adapter were the wrong kind. Why in the world can't the K3 have an X-band horn in the back instead of that antiquated serial connector? When I tried to transmit, the guys on the net complained about the K3's key clicks, and its ATU wouldn't tune my 0.1 -j 4570 ohm antenna impedance properly. However, when I boosted the lower two TX EQ bands by +16 dB these problems seemed to go away. Well, that, and re-writing the K3's firmware to implement a windowing function that takes 2 GB of external memory to implement. With some of this extra memory I wrote a Yaesu receiver personality that makes my K3 distort exactly like my old FT-757. It's just like having that rig back in the shack. During this testing, I did have some trouble with FSK-D VOX without QSK in DATA-A Dual PB AFX BIN TEXT DEC NR 1-4 mode, but switching to AFSK with APF, PTT DVR N1MM through the soundcard with DTR always on and CONFIG:MON turned down seemed to help. However, I plan to ask Wayne for a high-priority firmware update to do this automatically. (By the way, it's a good thing I have this short call sign... I can say my call 15 times in one ten second DVR memory! Thank goodness for the vanity call sign system.) I *think* everything's okay now except for there's still something wrong with the receiver which I can't quite pinpoint, and I know it couldn't possibly be related to all of those years touring with The Who and standing in front of their amplifiers night after night. Re: [Elecraft] [OT] The Thread of all Threads
Hi all, The question of how sensitive/insensitive the K3 is on 10m or higher intrigued me enough to do a little testing. The bottom line is that I did not find a great sensitivity loss on 10m or higher . I did see a nominal sensitivity loss of maybe 3-4 dB on 10m and 6m relative to the sensitivity on lower bands. Here are some details of what I tested. I have an HP 8640 signal generator with an outstanding decade attenuator that can reduce the signal out down to nominally -130 dBm. So with this generator feeding into a Kay attenuator unit, I could attenuate the signal down by increments of 1 dB as far down as I would like. I calibrated the 8640 to 0 dBm when the 8640 attenuator was set to 0 dBm. I used a Yamaha headset and listed to the CW signal out of the 8640 with the K3 set to SSB. The internal preamp and attenuator in the K3 were turned off. The ATU was bypassed. The audio bandpass was nominally 3 Khz. NB, NR, and NTCH were turned off. I listened to the audio out of the K3 while adding attenuation until I could not hear the signal. The attenuator setting where I last heard the signal is the value in the table. The absolute signal level at -130 dBm may not be exact, but the relative values should be quite good. Freq Receive threshold 1900 -135 dBm 3800 -135 7100 -136 14100 -135 18100 -137 21200 -135 24940 -137 28400 -132 50125 -133, with internal preamp on = -138, with external preamp on = -142 For my personal interests, I also tested an FT817 which was close at hand. Freq Receive threshold 1900 -95 dBm 3800 -103 7100 -106 14100 -113 18100 -117 21200 -120 24940 -115 28400 -120 50125 -148 ( this one is very interesting ) Don, N0YE On 12/13/2010 11:24 AM, Al Lorona wrote: This morning I got up and turned on the K3. On Dec 13, 2010, at 12:49 PM, Andrew Meyer wrote: I had considered using a Signal Link but is there really any reason to do so? In your case, there is no reason unless the K3's turn around time is too slow for Winmor when using the built-in VOX. You'll have to check that part out. The SignaLink provides a VOX based PTT (which the K3 already has) and transformer isolation (which the K3 already has). So all you really need is a sound card for the K3. By the way, for anyone looking for a good sound card for the LP-PAN, keep your eyes open for the E-MU 0204. This is pretty much an E-MU 0404 in a smaller box (and with front facing controls). It lacks the S/PDIF ports and possibly no 48 volt phantom power (neither of which you need for the LP-PAN). Otherwise, the specs mirrors the specs of the E-MU 0404. The 0204 has been announced but I have not seen any one selling it yet. It should come in under US $130 (the E-MU 0404 goes for around $200, so you save some money, save some desk space and not lose anything in performance). 73 Chen, W7AY __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: 4r22 firmware... Is it the latest?
Hi all: Is 4r22 firmware the latest software or is there another newer revision? I installed 4r22 today and I find that the auto notch *still* has that annoying momentary dropout in the audio at T/R turnover that I discovered during SS. The TX Gate function has the nice ramping decay in this rev, and the SSB TX audio sounds fine. I recall that the previous release of this firmware had TX audio issues. Is there a later rev of this firmware? Looking at the beta folder on the FTP site, I see that folder is empty. Also, how do I backrev the firmware now? I attempted to backrev to 4r14, my last solid firmware release with a working auto notch. I used to be able to look at my local folders where I unzip the firmware and choose to install it instead of the existing loaded code, but this is the first time that I cannot use that option. I have been able to do this before, but now I cannot. What has changed? I guess I will have to put up with the holy auto notch a little while longer while enjoying the gate :) Thanks in advance Lu Romero - W4LT K3 # 3192 No virus found in this outgoing message Checked by PC Tools AntiVirus (6.1.0.25 - 6.14880). http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Luis, We have revision 4.25 in field test -- it has the auto notch fix. We should be going to beta test with this revision shortly, but I'll send it you now. 73, Wayne N6KR On Dec 13, 2010, at 5:32 PM, Luis V. [Elecraft] Audio dropout

The momentary dropout that bugs me is the one that occurs when you turn on Sub. The K3 is the best at this in many ways, but it has the unfortunate habit of observing a moment of silence when the Sub button is pushed. I like to turn Sub off at times to get rid of the 3db splitter loss, and every time I turn it back on to check the pile the radio exhibits this annoying trait. Re: [Elecraft] Audio dropout
I have version 4.22 firmware. The transition from SUB off to SUB on, and reverse, happens without any dropout. What you describe simply does not happen. When I use N1MM, ***N1MM*** has some kind of transition issue like that. But it does NOT happen from the K3 front panel. Also sending SB0; or SB1; from the command tester tab of the current K3 utility (not involved with any third party software) produces an instant change. This is very easy to test and verify. What is your firmware version? Does this drop-out occur in the context of using a logging program? If so, what program and version? 73, Guy On Mon, Dec 13, 2010 at 9:55 PM, Tony Estep estept...@gmail.com wrote: On Mon, Dec 13, 2010 at 7:32 PM, Luis V.
