[Elecraft] K3 mod history?
Does Elecraft keep a history of each K3 manufactured and the follow on mods? Tracked by serial number? My #250 has been back to the mothership several times for repairs/mods etc. I am not sure if my KXV3 has been changed to the 'A' or not. Thinking about adding the P3 to the lineup and not sure if rig is ready or needs the A mod. 73 Tom CX7TT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 mod history?
The P3 does not require the KXV3A, the original KXV3 works fine. The main addition for the A has to do with a new TMP connector for the K144XV. Re: [Elecraft] Subscription
I think you'll have to use the filter capability of your mail client. Most posters put the product in square brackets in the subject line ([K3] if it's a K3 post). Of course if you did that, you would have missed your own post:-) 73 HNY Mike NF4L On 12/27/2010 3:41 AM, Colin Potter wrote: How do I subscribe to K3-only - at present I have the whole Elecraft reflector and get swamped. Re: [Elecraft] Subscription
Merry Christam Colin, you can't 'subscribe' to K3 only, but you can put rules into your mail client (if it supports them) that trash something with K1, KX1, K2 etc in the header - having first ensured it does have K3 there of course. Thats what I do - it cuts down the traffic quite a bit, but a lot of the traffic is relevant to K3 anyway. Alternatively there is the Nabble archive at http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ and a whole lot more about Reflectors etc on the Elecraft site at http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html And there is a K3 Yahoo group at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/ 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174, P3 #108 On 27 Dec 2010, at 08:41, Colin Potter wrote: How do I subscribe to K3-only - at present I have the whole Elecraft reflector and get swamped. Re: [Elecraft] K3 with Microham Keyer 2
Hi Chris, I may be one of the least qualified to answer ur question but having recently done that I thought I would let you know it was a piece of cake. They go together like toast and jam ( you see what I have on my mind these days). Depending on ur logging program there are variations but all is explained very clearly in the help files. My station is of medium complexity with some switching that is unique to my situation. With a lot of thought and help from memebers of the Microham reflector it went together veery well. You mention the Virtual ports. That is an area that has been problematical for me in the past and was of some concern before I started. It turned out to be extremely easy with no problems at all. If you have further questions the MH reflector may be a good source, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/microHAM. Re: [Elecraft] K3 with Microham Keyer 2
Chris, I wouldn't describe myself as particularly computer literate, but that said, marrying the K3 and MKII was a snap. Just buy the proper cable when you get the MKII, plug it all in as labeled, then follow the step by step instructions. I sold the first MicroKeyer I bought years ago only getting it to work when my computer literate friend was here!!! This is FAR better and works well. I can even switch from radio to radio by just changing cables and moving a few items in the router software. Piece of cake! 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 with Microham Keyer 2
Unfortunately the answer to your question is a book, and a large one at that. Having been there, done that, made every mistake imaginable, read the Microham instructions carefully, then follow them carefully. Do not skip steps or get in a hurry. If you don't understand it, deal with it before moving on. In my case intuitive was usually wrong. Most of the troubles I have seen posted had to do with hooking up cables, and then not understanding the PC mechanisms and their settings, trying to operate without properly setting everything, usually followed by a post Why won't my K3 work with my Microham gear, as if it had anything at all to with the K3. Except for a handful, the solutions had nothing to do with an actual equipment malfunction except inadequate, broken and just plain wrong jumpers in use, and erroneous connections. Since this often radiates into a logging program such as N1MM, and a function can sometimes be done EITHER in the Microham drivers OR the N1MM program itself, one easily gets confused that settings must be set in both, when in actuality it needs to be set in only one or the other, and the two conflict. N1MM has getting started material available which is very good. But it presumes that the listed functions are not being done in station boxes. The interaction of a computer driven station control box with a PC is unfortunately complex and full of traps and apparently as individual as fingerprints given the wide variety of equipment configurations in use. The settings needed vary wildly with station equipment and PC motherboard. Actually understanding what is going on well enough to easily make a choice can be a severe learning curve. It certainly was severe for me, and the source of many headaches and personal confusions. This is not a newby task. Be prepared to actually learn how everything works, including your PC's sound system and how drivers work in your operating system. It is not the fault of those who write instructions that this is complex. It is a senior grade task with literally thousands of equipment/software variations possible, making it impossible to address them all individually in any documentation. If you want to get it done right quickly, invite over a friend ham who already has his working for a while (yes, pay for his plane ticket), and let him get it right for you. Feed him prime rib and an expensive wine. It will be worth every penny. Or just steel yourself for the task it really is, set your jaw, and wade in without any misconceptions of who the enemy is -- I have met the enemy, and it is me. Best of luck and 73. Guy. Re: [Elecraft] Windows 7 64bit and USB to RS232 adapter
The com ports of Microham devices can be made stable, even though it uses USB to get to the box, by simply loading the USB Device router at boot time. So my COM 7 and COM 8 never change, because those numbers have been set in software before any variable plug and play USB stuff is run because of whatever USB stuff you have plugged in today. The COM ports of microHAM hardware are stable because they use serial numbered devices. Windows will remember a COM assignment if the device contains a serial number because is associates the serial number and port assignment no matter which port that device uses. However, most commodity hardware lacks a serial number and all Windows can do is assign a new COM number to every new device/new port it sees. Like everything else, you get what you pay for ... if you are going to use the lowest cost commodity hardware, you will get commodity level performance. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] Windows 7 64bit and USB to RS232 adapter
At some point the advice was to always load the Microham USB router at boot time. What was the reason for that? Convenience ... it was there when the user wanted to use it without the need to wait for it to load. Just to make sure that com ports 8 and under weren't gobbled up? That doesn't always work. Windows has been known to load other devices right over the Eltima drivers. It appears to depend in the driver and how it finds open COM numbers. 73, ... Don't buy a K3 if you're shack is very windy. It's so light, it may blow off the table :.) Prior to the K3, I had an Icom 7800, and before that, an FT1000D. Shortcomings of the 7800 include a useless APF and crippled computer control (I forget exact details, but as I recall there were some issues with split operation and inability to clear RIT from the keyboard, using the popular contest and logging programs). I loved my FT1000D, but it's getting old, replacement parts are no longer available, etc. I have no regrets owning the K3. I've been reading the K3 reflector for the past couple of weeks. I'm in the market for a new radio and have my choices narrowed down to a couple models to replace my TS-850S which has served me very well. First my operating interests: I primarily spend my time contesting, DX contests in particular, and most of my time on 80 and 40M. 99% of the time I operate CW. So, in particular, low band CW performance is important to me. In between contests I spend my time DXing, again primarily on the low bands. Some occasional VHF operating on 6 and 2M. I'd also like to point out that I do interface my radios to a dedicated computer using Win XP pro and use N1MM for contesting and Logger 32 for general operating. Both of these applications are very well supported and the K3 is well represented among users. I've narrowed my choices down to two radios, the FTDX5000 and the K3. There are several things keeping me from falling in love with the FTDX5000: 1) The CW break-in performance is broken in the FTDX5K above ~30 wpm, resulting in chopped characters, and from what I'm told, really bad sounding on the air. 2) The APF filter is also not working correctly. 3) The contour control does not function on CW, I believe only on SSB. Of course, these limitations COULD be fixed by Yaesu in future revisions but I'm apprehensive that Yaesu is going to fix anything. They certainly don't participate in the FTDX5000 user forums although supposedly they do read the posts. Sort of the we know what we're doing, there's no problem attitude with JA radio manufacturers. After all, how many FT-1000XX radios were built with the key click problem? I don't think Yaesu ever admitted there was an issue and the fix was relatively simple to implement in production. At $5K plus one would hope these problems are addressed but one never knows. Certainly Elecraft is much more responsive and is actively involved in post sale issues and solutions. I've never been a fan of ICOM HF radios although the IC-7800 gets good reviews but at $10K per radio??? I've also used Ten-Tec before and never been a big fan plus the Orion II suffers from a poor performing 2nd receiver and I know of several locals that have had there Orions back for service/updates several times. So what else is there and am I missing anything else? Which brings me to the K3. This radio seems, to me, to be exactly what I'm looking for. I really can't think of anything holding me back. I'm looking at the 100W model with the following accessories: a) KAT3 b) KXV3A c) 2.8K 8 pole SSB filter d) 400 hz 8 pole filter e) 250 hz 8 pole filter Future options would be the KRX sub receiver, K144XV-K 2M Module (I do some VHF operating but presently have a rig for 2M SSB anyway), I'm not currently using any receive antennas on 80/40M. I'd like an opinion on this but I don't think I see the advantage to buying the sub receiver UNTIL I have receive antennas available for diversity reception? What am I missing here? I don't operate any of the digital modes but I would like to do so. Is the 2.8K filter adequate for digital modes or do I want something different? I also like the portability of the K3 as I am planning on some future DX-pedition use. I can't see lugging a 43 pound FTDX5000 through airport security either. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to have a sanity check with some experienced K3 users that know the K3 and have similar interests and requirements. I'm on vacation this week and one thing I do plan on doing is dropping by a local in or DX club and using his K3 for a couple of hours. Your thoughts and comments are appreciated. -- Samir, 7S7V www.qsl.net/7s7v __ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 5693 (20101210) __ The message
[Elecraft] Reason to NOT buy a K3?
This is really a NO-BRAINER. It is no different than accepting the offer (read as wife's permission to purchase one K-3) to eat only ONE of a certain brand of chips. Once you have tasted one (read as owned a K-3), you can't stop there! You have to have another. [Elecraft] Remote firmware upgrade failure
After several months of successful operation with MCU firmware 3.97, I attempted to remotely upgrade the firmware from 3.97 to 4.22 using the latest K3 utility (ver 1.3.11.5). It failed. The K3 utility had detected a 38400 baud rate, even though the radio had been set to 19200 baud. The utility could not continue, but it did manage to disable the remote RS-232 input in the process. Now the K3 Utility autobaud routine sends hex 3B (semicolon) and in return usually receives hex 7B (left bracket). Occasionally it will receive a longer string - something like 7B FF FA 2C 6A 04 FF F0. Once, while testing for 9600 baud, the K3 utility sent hex 54 42 3B (TB;) which doesn't make sense. I have tried cycling power to the K3, then holding the power on pin (pin 8) of the ACC connector low for 10 seconds as the owners manual sort of suggests (Manual Rev D5, page 45). (I can't hold down the local power button - it is many miles away!) I've tried using Hyperterminal to send semicolons. It consistantly returns the left bracket symbol, no matter what speed I set Hyperterminal to. Sending enter (hex 0D) returns hex 7D. Anyone have any ideas how to remotely recover the K3's normal operation? 73, Mike W3IP __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 with Microham Keyer 2
Chris: At my station, K3 #3192 has been married to a microKEYER2 for several years now after its divorce from a Kenwood TS850S/AT. All it needed was a new cable (get the rear plug one, much prettier on the desktop!). I have had no problems whatsoever with the interface at all. I also have a microKEYER Classic and it works with the K3 just as well. Absolutely no issues, paperclip reliability and very simple setup (All you have to do is be able to read... if you read the microHAM instructions included in the manual and follow the recommendations, it will work for you). As an added bonus, K3 list participant and North/South America microHAM distributor W4TV owns two K3's, so you are in rather good company for support :) -lu-W4LT- K3 # 3192 == Message: 15 Date: Mon, 27 Dec 2010 08:33:46 + From: Christopher Soames sem...@semaos.plus.com Subject: [Elecraft] K3 with Microham Keyer 2 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 4d184f6a.6070...@semaos.plus.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Hi all first post on here for me so here goes Just completed the build on my K3 ready for the Club Championships here in the uk. [Elecraft] [Elecraft K3]Buying a K3
Gary, I have had a K3 for 2 years now (Serial # 934) and have found that getting this rig was the best thing I ever did. You obviously have done your homework and done it very well. Let me state that as a retired product support engineer and technical instructor for a company that manufactures atomic partial accelerators primarily for the semiconductor industry, supporting the product you manufacture is just as important as properly designing it. Wayne and Eric have not only put together a world class team for Elecraft, they also seriously listen to their customers. Tell me about any Japanese ( and even some American) companies that do that on a regular basis. I have had the honor of working with Eric and his lovely wife at the Marlborough, Ma. at the Elecraft booth during this year's ARRL Convention. He is one of the most dedicated and helpful person I know. Having people like Eric and Wayne creating a company dedicated entirely to Amateur radio equipment of the finest quality and in kit form requires both expert design and a product support team that continuously goes out of their way to make sure the customer is listened to and properly taken care of. Good luck on your choice of radio but I hope it is the K3. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] Slightly rough CW note on rx
What's happened to my K3? I've been noticing today that on rx, the CW note of signals is slightly rough. It sounds just a little fuzzy. If I change modes to USB (no other changes), that roughness goes away entirely. This is not the mechanical fuzziness that I've heard before that's audio frequency dependent. It happens independent of the tone frequency of the signal, though it seems more apparent at the lower audio frequencies (I have my sidetone pitch set to 450). I have SPKR+PH setup on PF2, so I can turn it on and off quickly. Listening just to the K3 internal speaker, this roughness is always present. If I listen through my CM-500 headset, and toggle SPKR+PH from YES to NO, the roughness remains on the signal for maybe a second, then goes away. This must be a clue! This is K3 # 4564 (MCU 4.22, DSP 2.70) and I've been very happy with the CW tone until today. I'm not aware that I've changed any settings lately. I don't have NB or NR on. Just AGC-F (though it is independent of AGC setting). It is independent of bandwidth. I have the 2.7kHz and 400Hz filters, and it happens with either and any setting of the DSB bandwidth. 73, Randy, KS4L __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Remote firmware upgrade failure
Firmware load always occurs at 38400 bps, that's the only speed the K3 bootstrap loader supports. The K3 Utility changes the serial port speed to 38400 bps for firmware load and changes it back after the firmware is loaded. I don't know how your remote access works... Are you running the K3 Utility at a computer near the radio? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Slightly rough CW note on rx
Randy, Since the problem seems to be confined to times that the internal speaker is being used, I must ask if you have the synthesizer stiffener added to your K3. Why it would suddenly become a problem when it was not before is anyone's guess, maybe the screws mounting the synthesizer board work a bit loose. If you do not have the synthesizer stiffener and you use the internal speaker, you should add it promptly. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/27/2010 4:59 PM, Randy Moore wrote: What's happened to my K3? Re: [Elecraft] K3 mod history?
There is a single resistor mod on the RF board for greater IF gain for the P3. No mod to the KXV3 or KXV3A, but the P3 does use the IF out connector, so one of the KXV3 or KXV3A is used. [Elecraft] K3: KXV3 Issues
I have K3 s/n 1826 that I love. I just installed a KXV3 (not KXV3A) I/F adapter. The problem is that when I try to do the Milliwatt TX Gain Calibration procedure, I get errors. I connected a dummy load to the XVTR jack and put the KXV3 into TEST mode. The procedure looks fine on 160 M, yielding 1.00 mW. The other bands give low or 0.00 readings and return the TXG error. I have two K3s set up for SO2R using a DX Doubler. Each radio has the Top Ten cable for a K3 with a PTT, key, mic and phones plug on one end. When everything is set up and I plug my headphones into the DX Doubler's phones jack, I hear a bit of hum on the audio regardless of whether the audio switch is in Radio 1, Both, or Radio 2 position. When I send with the right radio or left radio, I hear a hummy audio. However, if I plug the headphones into either radio's phones jack, everything sounds perfect. No hum. No hummy sidetone audio. If I plug it back into the DX Doubler, and key radio 1 while the audio switch is in radio 1, and I pull the interface cable from radio 2 out of the DX Doubler socket, it all sounds fine. Same with the opposite situation, key and monitor radio 2, pull the interface for radio 1, and have headphones plugged into DX Doubler phone socket. Looking at the DXD schematic, the audio from each radio is fed to the DXD phone socket with no active devices in the audio chain. It is strictly a switch and relay. So, physically, the two radio's audio outputs (audio 1, audio 2 and ground) are fed into the Radio 1 and Radio 2 interface sockets. The grounds on both radios are joined and the DXD's audio switch controls two DPDT relays that either serve just radio 1, both, or just radio 2 audio to the phone socket. Clearly what I am hearing on the DXD is coming from stereo phones jack back into the DXD, or somehow getting created in the DXD. Monitoring the phones jack on the front panel I hear only clean stuff. Does anyone have any clues as to why the audio coming out of the stereo phones rear jacks should be interacting this way when being routed through the DXD? [Elecraft] problem addendum
When I pull the stereo phones plug on either radio and plug a headphone into that jack, everything sounds clean. So, whatever is going on is apparently happening inside the DXD. Very strange. Re: [Elecraft] problem addendum
This sounds like a classic ground loop problem where your DX doubler may not be at the same AC ground potential as the K3s. Are they all separately grounded to the same point? Same power supply too? 73, Eric On 12/27/2010 4:48 PM, Rob wrote: When I pull the stereo phones plug on either radio and plug a headphone into that jack, everything sounds clean. [Elecraft] [T1] T1 tuner auto-tune sensitivity?
Dear Gang: Has anyone used a T1 with a RockMite? My T1 will not detect and autotune with either of two RockMites I have tried it with. Are there any mods that would increase the T1 autotune sensitivity? The RockMites put out about .5 watts, so I am thinking I only need to increase the sensitivity by .1 watt or so. I'd gladly give up some high-power capability since I never use the T1 above 5 or 10 watts. Re: [Elecraft] Will the K2 noise blanker help with this QRM?
That's what I was afraid of. I spent some time the other night looking into DSP filtering that I could do on my PC, but I realized after awhile that once the S9+20 signal has gone through the K2 and deafened it, filtering it out of the audio is a bit pointless - I'm still going to be missing all the weaker signals. If anyone wants to look at and comment on the intermittent horrible 40m QRM I get, here are some visual and audio samples: http://nerdnetworks.org/stuff/40m_waterfall.png http://nerdnetworks.org/stuff/40m_qrm.png http://nerdnetworks.org/stuff/40m_qrm.mp3 This stuff manifests as an S9 or greater buzz/hash that slowly creeps up and down in frequency. 40 will be nicely usable and relatively quiet, and then this stuff starts up and I might as well just shut off the radio (or try 80, which is at least sometimes usable even with the previous QRM I asked about). I suspect that if a constant-frequency QRM like the stuff on 80 can't be filtered easily, this varying stuff can't be either. I have heard about the MFJ and Timewave noise canceling gizmos, I can imagine one of those working OK on the TV noise, but I would assume that this stuff that moves around wouldn't be so easy to deal with. My friend told me that I need to use a move to a cabin in the woods filter. -- o...@nerdnetworks.org (Owen B. The horizontal sweep oscillator is on about 15 kHz, and the vertical sweep oscillator runs at slightly less than 60 Hz. This same 3.579 MHz oscillator is the reason for the persistent weak signal on 14.312 or 14.313 (the 4th harmonic of 3.579) that plagues many of us. Also, many devices use this same 3.579 (more or less) frequency to control some internal function or process - crystal controlled clocks, fax machines, microwave oven timers, and video games being only few examples. TV sets are locked to a particular frequency by the transmission they receive, whereas other devices are not. This is the reason you can often hear many many individual signals around these frequencies - particularly on 20 meters. I am not too sure about more modern HDTV receivers. Hopefully they use a different mechanism,. so perhaps we will see a gradual lessening of this problem as time passes. Or not. - Jim, KL7CC Monty Shultes wrote: 3580 is a magic frequency, actually 3979.xx is the vertical (horizontal?) oscillator frequency in OLD tube TV sets.
