[Elecraft] I am itching to build a radio
Hello everyone, I hope everyone had (is having) a great Holiday. Tomorrow I celebrate my 39th anniversary of being a licensed Ham. 39 years ago I was building the HW-16 I received for Christmas. I loved it so much that I made a career of electronics. Lately I am getting very anxious to build another radio. Does anyone have a kit that you want to have built? Or do you have a kit that you are not going to build? Drop me a note and let me know what you have. Thanks very much. Re: [Elecraft] Problems with knobs
I built my K3 about 2 months ago and also had the out of round problem with the knobs. Especially noticeable with the dual knobs. The concentric knobs were so out of round that I couldn't use them. Of course I had a new set but it took a while. The new ones were not all that great either. They work, but they are crooked. I would have thought that by now they would find a decent supplier for these. Looks like it is still not the case. I would rather spend $30 more for a K3 than to go through the aggravation. Not to mention it makes the product look cheap. As to the VFO knows, I bought some solid brass andoized ones from EBAY and they are fabulous. Of course these are very expensive ($100) but they add to the feel of the receiver. I'm not suggesting that Elecraft should do this, but at least provide some decent knobs for the radio. Come to think of it, the quality control of a lot of little things is not there. I bought the stainless steel screw set and there were not enough of the screws to complete the outside of the case. I tried to get this fixed, but this is my other complaint. I hzve called for support 6 times. Three of these times, my call wasn't returned. The last time I insisted to wait until someone helped which they did. I have also sent 5 or 6 emails, again at least three went unanswered and the last one was, very quickly but the follow up for the missing part required me to get back on the phone, since as one group said, someone dropped the ball. Sorry, but I am frustrated, since once again, I sent an email about 2 weeks ago, and never heard a word. I think Elecraft is not following up on their customer support situation well enough. I think they are being asked for too much by their management as they hinted on my last call. I have laid out over $8000 on their stuff. they could do a little (quite a bit more) in the end user support area. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Problems-with-knobs-K3-tp7115008p712920 5.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Problems with knobs
Just a little follow up on my email. It has been my experience that when I have a contact with Elecraft about a support issue, it is way better than 99% of the companies out there. My only issue is that 50% of my calls or emails went unanswered. It would seem that I just had bad luck, maybe calling or writing at a bad time when the staff was under deadline pressure or something like that. All I know is that when I do talk to someone they always say it is crazy around here. Maybe some students from a coop program could help out occasionally. Very low cost. None the less, like I said once the contact is made, it is fabulous. I got a call today, from someone at Elecraft who is on vacation, and wants to do whatever he needs to to rectify my situation. Like I said, the support is way better than most companies. I would just like to have a better chance of a response than 50%. Re: [Elecraft] question-equivalence of systems
what else will I need to have an equivalent system? thanks. The answer depends upon what you do with K3 and what you currently like and dislike about the 756proII. The K3 has some significantly better spec's than the Icom. (Check the Elecraft website by looking at the Rig Comparisons at http://www.elecraft.com/K2_perf.htm). The order page makes it easy to pick you rig capabilities and customize the K3. For example the filter selections depend upon what you want to do with the K3, the second receiver adds another dimension and the selection of the P3 pan adapter still more flexibility. Tell us more and we can give your our take on the ultimate K3. 73 Dan - Dan AB3EN -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/question-equivalence-of-systems-tp7130928p7130995.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2 Frequence Drift
Hello everyone... I know that this has been kicked around on the reflector quite a bit but it is new to me and trying to read through all of the information is a daunting task. I just finished building my k2/100 in November. I have not noticed this problem before but I have not had the opportunity to use is that much either. Today when talking to a friend on 7.219.00MHz LSB I noticed that he began to drift off freq. Because he was mobile I did not think that much about it. As we continued our conversation I found that when I turned on the RIT and listened on 7.218.95 he sounded on freq again. When I questioned him about it he told me that he thought I was off freq as well. I turned off the RIT and tuned to 7.218.95 and he told me that I was right on freq again. The drift was obvious and stopped exactly .05 down from where we started. I switched radios and we continued our conversation on 7.219.00. When I turned the K2 back on and transmitted with it the exact same thing happened as before. As the radio warmed up it drifted down .05. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500: 120vac vs. 240vac
Dick, Any differences between the 120 and the 240 volt AC input have more to do with the wiring between the breaker panel in the house and the hamshack. Length of wire, wire size, tightness of the connectors and receptacles. Twice as much current is drawn at 120 volts vs. 240 volts, so the IR drop in the AC wiring will be half. For any particular DC PA voltage, there should be no difference in drive level or heat dissipation, so that depends on how the user has set the transformer tap rather than the AC input voltage. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/27/2011 4:10 PM, r...@aol.com wrote: Hi Guys, Wondering if anyone has tested their KPA-500 on both 120v. and 240v. and documented the following: 1) When operating on 240v. was the PA voltage under load the same, higher, or lower than when operating at 120v.? 2) When operating on 240v. was the same, less, or more drive required for the same power output? 3) Did the KPA-500 PA temperature while contesting stay the same, decrease, or increase? Re: [Elecraft] K2 Frequence Drift
Rich, A 50 Hz drift downward from a cold start is pretty typical for the K2. I would suggest you perform the frequency calibration on your K2 after a reasonable warm-up period. Then after the initial (few minute) warm up, it will be right on. Once understood, this amount of drift is not a problem (for most people). 73, Bruce, N1RX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2 Frequence Drift
I would suspect the major issue was using RIT. If the other station drifts, just use main tuning to get back with him. When you turn on RIT then he will hear you off frequency and tune to you and be off for you and you will leapfrog across the band. 73 - Mike WA8BXN ---Original Message--- From: Jason Morgan Date: 12/27/2011 4:11:06 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K2 Frequence Drift Hello everyone... Jason, The K2 specification for drift is less than 100 Hz from a cold start at 25 degC. 50 Hz is well within that specification. I would suggest you do the dial calibration procedure after the K2 has warmed up. I highly recommend the procedure on my website www.w3fpr.com - article on K2 Dial Calibration. I would suggest a 15 minute warm-up period is about right. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/27/2011 4:10 PM, Jason Morgan wrote: Hello everyone... Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500: 120vac vs. 240vac
Taps on the power transformer ensure the amplifier sees exactly the same voltage to the RF power amplifier module, no matter which mains voltage is used, as long as you select the tap as described in the Owner's manual. So there is absolutely no difference in the voltage, drive or temperature. As Don noted, the only difference is the current demand on the mains supply which, of course, is twice at 120 V compared to 240V. But a standard American home 120V circuit will handle the load. I run my K3/P3 and a few other items including a couple of lamps from the same 20A 120V circuit as the KPA500 with no problem. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Hi Guys, Wondering if anyone has tested their KPA-500 on both 120v. and 240v. and documented the following: 1) When operating on 240v. was the PA voltage under load the same, higher, or lower than when operating at 120v.? 2) When operating on 240v. was the same, less, or more drive required for the same power output? 3) Did the KPA-500 PA temperature while contesting stay the same, decrease, or increase? Re: [Elecraft] K2 Frequence Drift
And, if you don't want to twiddle the main tuning knob during the QSO, be sure to let the rig warm up for 15 minutes or so first. Most people don't bother but simply adjust the main tuning (not the RIT) as needed during the warm-up period to keep the K2 on frequency. If it seems to happen to you after your K2 is fully warmed up, suspect the OTHER station's transmitter is drifting. Most rigs move frequency a bit during the warm-up period. A good way to assess our K2's stability without exotic equipment is to tune in WWV at 10 MHz in CW mode, using SPOT to zero beat the carrier when the tones are not present. You can see how much drift occurs from cold start and check to see if it's stable after a warm-up period since WWV's frequency is very, very stable. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Jason, The K2 specification for drift is less than 100 Hz from a cold start at 25 degC. 50 Hz is well within that specification. I would suggest a 15 minute warm-up period is about right. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/27/2011 4:10 PM, Jason Morgan wrote: Hello everyone... Re: [Elecraft] K2 won't come on.
Well, the first thing to do is measure the resistance from the collector of Q7 or Q8 to ground. If it is lower than 1.5k, then you have a PA transistor problem. If that is indeed the case, the installation of K2PAKIT will likely solve your problem - install Q11 and Q13 too just to be safe. You may not have to send it to Elecraft repair after all. We try to assist to keep the number of support staff repairs at a minimum - that is consistent with you built it, and you can maintain it. Unofficial help is available here on the Elecraft reflector, and official help at supp...@elecraft.com. The base K2 PA transistors are now being supplied as a matched pair, and will serve better than a random pair. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/27/2011 8:03 PM, kf4clo wrote: HI EVERYONE My K2 has been working great for over a year. turned it on this evening and the light flashed and the internal fuse blew.
