Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Cooling
I ordered my KAT500 and spoke with the designer there. It can go either under or over the KPA500. If put over, the temperature of the KPA will run higher so the KPA fan will run faster but still within tolerance. I currently have my KPA sitting ontop of a MFJ automatic antenna tuner, plan on placing the KAT under the KPA - rather not increase how hard the fan works and don't need the KAT higher up anyway. Gil, You will have to do CAL PLL and CAL FIL after properly setting the 4 MHz reference oscillator Control Board C22. The magic is in setting C22 properly. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Displayed frequency question.
Gil and others, I can just recommend to follow Don's article. It has worked very well for me. What has worked best for me was to use the N6KR method to calibrate the reference oscillator (with WWV at 10Mhz). I carried out about 4 iterations for matching the 2 frequencies between TP1 and TP2. At the end, I had to set both frequencies not to exactly the same frequency, but TP1 to -30Hz in order to get the most accurate frequency reading across all bands. Note you cannot get closer than +-10Hz with the K2. [Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor Software bug
Can anyone confirm a problem I seem to be having with the K3 Frequency Memory Editor software? If I try to set memory frequencies for transverters in the XVn memories above 2.3GHz I get an error message, and if I set a memory directly on the K3 and then read it back with the utility it shows up as a frequency that has no obvious relationship to that set on the K3. This seems to be the case for any band above 2.3GHz. A previous version of the utility worked OK on 2.3 and 3.4GHz but failed on 5.7GHz and above, and the error message with that version makes me think its an overflow in a 32 bit integer variable used to represent the frequency. 73 John G3XDY K3 #00689 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I have a friend that was experiencing a similar issue, and discovered that the module had become unseated somewhat causing intermittent RF power output issues. Re: [Elecraft] K2 no audio output on Part I Test
Mario, Look at the Control Board schematic in the lower right corner to see all the components associated with U9 and check all of them for good soldering. Also check P3 pins 7, 8, and 10. RF board J8 pins 7, 8, and 10 are also in the path. Be certain there is 12 volts at U9 pin 7. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/4/2012 4:18 PM, Mario Bouchard wrote: Hey guys, I'v started my part I test on my K2 S/N 007168, all is good except for the Audio Amplifier and Tone Generator Test section. I don't have a clue where to start looking except that I've looked closely at the board for bad soldering, if U9 was the right chip and installed properly and all that is good. Mario, No, 5 volts there is not good at all. You should have zero volts DC, but there may be some AC riding on that level. What is the voltage at CB U9 pin 6? I am thinking that either you have a solder bridge or you have a shorted C29. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/4/2012 7:41 PM, Mario Bouchard wrote: Don, Thanks for indicating the right order of the pins, I had measured the wrong ones, rookie mistake I guess. [Elecraft] KPA500 no power out on 160, 30 17 meters
The amp was working OK earlier today but just now I was checking it in my dummy load and am getting no power out of the KPA500 on 160, 30 17 meters. Got 500 out on 17 earlier today for a QSO. No matter what the drive is the power out on 160, 30 17 meters displayed on my LP-100 is whatever the rig is putting out. The drive level does not seem to have any difference as far as the KPA500 is concerned on 160, 30 17 meters. All other bands 40 – 6 are working OK. The rig is a Flex-5000. I rebooted the PC, powered off the amp off and then back on several times and powered the rig down and up but it made no difference. Anyone have any thoughts as to why this is happening? Mario, Yes, U9 pin 6 can have 6.5 volts, but... There is capacitor C29 between U9 pin 6 and the AF OUT signal (and the headphone jack) that should block any DC. If you have 5 volts at the AF OUT signal (P3 pins 7, 8 and 10), then that is a problem. You have something shorted to another signal or power supply rail somewhere. [Elecraft] NAQCC 8th Anniversary
This coming week of October 7 through the 13th is a very special one for the North American QRP CW Club (NAQCC). That week we celebrate the 8th anniversary of the founding of the club by Tom KB3LFC (now WY3H) - President, and John K3WWP - Vice-President. We will have 10 special event stations on the air that week - one from each USA call area - with the calls N1A, N2A, N3A, N4A, N5A, N6A, N7A, N8A, N9A, N0A. The 40 operators of the calls will post their operating schedule at http://naqcc.info/n3a_complete_schedule.php so you will know when and where to look for them as you participate in our celebration. We are offering special QSL cards and Certificates for anyone who works one or more of our special event stations. To find out how you may obtain one and/or the other, check the information contained on the page at http://naqcc.info/main_n3a.html. You must follow the informatin there EXACTLY or your request may not be fulfilled. The operation commences at Z October 7 and continues through 2359Z October 13. That is the week of our monthly sprint with which many of you reading this may already be familiar. However this month's sprint is something special as all 10 of our special event calls will be active for the full two hours. There may be some sort of award or prize to the one working the most different calls. This should make our already extremely popular sprints even more popular than usual when we normally get 175-200 participants, of whom 110-130 or so will submit logs. The sprint is Tuesday evening October 9 at 8:30-10:30 PM EDT which converts to the more familiar Wednesday October 10 from 0030-0230Z. [Elecraft] K-Line: Connections?
I'm considering adding the KPA500 and KAT500 to my K3/P3. I've got a couple of questions. 1. How does all this communicate with each other? Will it be through the serial connections or some AUXBUS cabling? The two pictures on the website don't show how this is done. 2. In talking with others about how they use their amps and tuners (not Elecraft) they tell me about all they gyrations they go through to achieve tuning. Will the K3/KPA500/KAT500 just do the right thing when the K3 tune button is depressed, i.e. tune at 5W as it does at present? Or will it require manual intervention? 73 Jim ab3cv __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K-Line: Connections?
Hi, Jim In your K Line configuration the cabling I would suggest is a 15 pin Accessory cable between K3 and KAT500 and another from KAT500 to KPA500. In that cable are four band lines, AUXBUS, and amplifier key line. Both the KAT500 and KPA500 can connect via serial port connections to a PC program. I use a four port USB to serial adapter, in the past I used an inexpensive four port ABCD switch. The K3 communicates band change to KAT500 and KPA500, both change bands without requiring transmission. Both KAT500 and KPA500 count Tx frequency and can change bands on Tx. A K3 will drive a KPA500 to full power with about 25 to 30 watts. The KAT500 tunes well at about that power level. To tune, the KAT500 will interrupt the amplifier key line, adjust its L network with the K3 power alone, then restore the amp key for full power transmission. Whether this is done automatically or manually is sort of up to you, there is a mode switch on the KAT500. Both the KAT500 and KPA500 run fine without a PC connection. You do need to install firmware through a serial connection using utility programs like the K3 and P3 Utilities. Both the KPA500 and KAT500 utilities have an Operate page that provide a one page view of operational state. The KAT500 Utility also has some configuration capability. 73 de Dick, K6KR On Oct 4, 2012, at 7:41 PM, Jim Miller j...@jtmiller.com wrote: I'm considering adding the KPA500 and KAT500 to my K3/P3. 73 Jim ab3cv __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Display frequency calibration
I use a program called Spectran ( freeware ) which will display the audio frequency of the output of the K3 I set the Frequency of the K3 to .000 kc (usb) this will produce a 1kc tone to the sound card in the computer when tuned to WWV at 10 mhz Spectran will then display the frequency of that audio tone on the screen. I then go into the K3 confg menu to REF CAL and adjust it so that the display on Spectran is as close to 1000 cycles ( 1kc ) as possible, the best I can set the K3 to is with in .27 of a cycle. it does vary between 5 mhz, 10 mhz @ 15 mhz though but not that much. that is close enough for me. also I find my self tuning in a station so there is a bit more highs to the sound which will also offset my tnx freq, guess I need to use the RIT more.. fwiw Ed -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Display-frequency-calibration-tp7563715p7563722.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Display frequency calibration
Just another note:My K3 will not produce a audio tone below 200 cycles in the speaker.. ( could be my ears) so finding a zero beat is impossible as I could be off that much above or below WWV trying to callibrate that way. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Display-frequency-calibration-tp7563715p7563723.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
