Re: [Elecraft] KX3 using CW key as PTT switch for voice
On 10/21/2012 08:05 AM, Wayne Burdick wrote: You can use the tip contact of the ACC2 jack as a PTT input. Set MENU:ACC2 IO to LO=PTT. I noticed this myself in the menus. Thanks for the tip! Works great as PTT in voice modes. However, this doesn't work for CW. If I use the key in CW mode, while it's still plugged into ACC2, it does the same thing as pressing the XMIT button: it puts the radio into TX mode, but doesn't actually transmit anything on the air. Strange. In CW mode, I have to unplug the key from ACC2, and then plug it into KEY, and then it works normally, transmitting at full power. No problems there at all, the key works great. So, the radio does have the ability to work with my straight key in all modes, which is good to know. However, it's awkward and cumbersome to have to plug it into a different jack when changing modes, especially considering it's the same piece of hardware. I tried a Y-adapter as a workaround. Unfortunately, no luck. I get really strange behavior when the key is plugged into ACC2 and KEY at the same time. I often get stuck key syndrome, where the radio gets stuck in TX mode, and doesn't get out of TX until powered off! Probably a race condition between the radio detecting the ACC2 state change and the KEY state change? Really looking forward to a future software release that allows the use of the CW key as a PTT switch in voice modes. As others have said, it would also be nice to have a further option to use the CW key to transmit CW in voice modes (at whatever frequency corresponds to the selected sidetone pitch), as well, not just to act as a PTT switch. Hope this all is feasible. You can plug your key directly into the ACC2 jack if it has a 2.5-mm stereo plug. If not, you'll need an adapter like the one supplied as part of our KX3 accessory cable kit. Nice, didn't know there was an accessory cable kit! Getting decent 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapters is surprisingly difficult, especially trying to find right-angle adapters. [Elecraft] KX3 sidetone pitch requests
Hi there! A minor request: I would love it if the CW sidetone pitch could have finer gradations. Currently, it is tunable only in increments of 10 Hz, from 400 Hz to 700 Hz. Would it be possible to have it tune in increments of 1 Hz? Reason is, the pitches sound off key to me, as if it's being played on a piano that's out of tune. The only musical note that lines up exactly with 10 Hz increments is 440 Hz (typical A) so I've been using that, even though it's rather low. I'd love to go an octave higher, to 880 Hz, but that's beyond the allowed tuning range. I have a musical background before discovering ham radio, and so I've developed perhaps a bad habit, that is, matching incoming CW signals to the sidetone by listening to the pitch and tuning the radio so that it matches the known good sidetone pitch, like tuning a musical instrument. However, because of the 10 Hz increments, I can't get good tuning on the sidetone to begin with. It sounds strange to my ears, because the sidetone isn't exactly where I want it to be, at a musical note I'm familiar with. Also, a wider range would be nice, perhaps up to 1000 Hz or so, as it seems my hearing is more sensitive at higher pitches. Thanks! [Elecraft] Headphone recommendation for K3
After using my Yaesu YH-77STA very happily for many years (they still work fine) I decided to give some other headphones a try. I also have the Sony MDR-7506 I bought a few years ago based on the Ehamnet reviews. However, I am not very keen on them at all. I find them too large and heavy and they make my ears and head hot with extended use. Also the rubber covering around the headphone speaker units has now crumbled and disintegrated. Several months ago, I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD238. I find them superb - lightweight and very comfortable including a recent 24 hour spell in the Oceania CW Contest. 73 Barry VK2BJ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Wire Antenna
I had the same problem with a 25 ft wire, but after lengthening it to 41 feet the KX3 tunes all bands from 80 to 10 to less than 2:1 SWR. Be sure to do a second tune if the first one doesn't get you where you want to go, sometimes that makes a difference. When portable (but not backpacking) I have three 16' wires going into a banana plug that I spread out as ground radials. I also have 6 feet of coax going from the radio to a barrel connector where the banana plug adapter is attached and sits on the ground. Less strain on the KX3 BNC and a little easier to manage. All of those things can affect the antenna's impedance to some degree. There is some loss in the length of coax from the radio at very high antenna SWR, but the trade-off is acceptable. 73 Chip AE5KA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

If you're really into CW, you might consider one of the tighter roofing filters (250, 400, 500 Hz). Generally the data modes use small passbands too. I'm guessing the venerable Kenwood MC-50/60 would also work very well. Yes, the non-A version since the power pin is different. The A version works but one needs to keep the preamp off or use internal batteries. The K3 has such a flexible mic input that almost any quality dynamic or electret mic will work with the appropriate settings and perhaps a little EQ. 73, ... [Elecraft] NaP3 and the KX3
I had put out a request for info on interfacing the HDSDR program with the KX3 and didn't get many takers, but one kind gentleman put me on to the program NaP3 (available for free download). It seems to be a really decent program for the PC that gives you rig control (frequency, mode, etc from a PC) and with a good soundcard (my laptop has a RealTek HD) that is capable of true stereo input, and at least 46K sampling rate, you can actually get a spectrum display similar to the P3 but nowhere near the bandwidth. With 46K selected for sampling rate in NaP3 it will actually display 20 KHz either side of center and once I figure out how to set the offsets etc., (I'm really just getting started with the program). NaP3 seems to be much more elegant and has more easily set up features than HDSDR and it (NaP3) has built in CAT control for a K3, KX3 or quite a few other rigs as well so the RS-232 interface is there as well. Someone had emailed me asking that I pass on the info that was passed to me and for some reason, I missed keeping that person's email when I cleaned up my inbox this morning. Whoever that was, email me again off the list and I'll pass on what I've learned (not much) and see if I can get the person that gave me the info to pass on his super help to you too. Re: [Elecraft] K3 additions
I have a 250 Hz filter I use for PSK31. It seems to improve reception with the normal numbers of signals on 20 meters. I does wonders with nearby strong signals. I am using the computer as a pan adapter, so I have to narrow the bandwidth around the desired signal manually. (I have a K3 button assigned to opening the bandwidth up again at the end of a QSO.) When my P3 arrives (RSN I hope), I plan to try to use it as the pan adapter, tune with the K3, and just have the computer do fine tuning and QSO recording. Regarding the digital modes: I see PSK31 as a rag chewing mode. Transmission speed is about the same as typing speed from a good typist. It is easy to demodulate the 31 Hz bandwidth signal if there is a 31 Hz guard band on either side, making is a good neighbor on crowded bands. I also see some PSK61, which is twice as fast and good for the macro driven 599 73 OM QRZ? type of contacts. The WSJT modes can get a signal through when the noise floor is higher than the signal. While I'm not a CW operator, I'm working in that direction. Narrow bandwidth and no computer are compelling characteristics. Jim: There are other batteries but none that will last ten years and give you 3 volts. I understand you not wanting to pay the surcharge UPS wants for a lithium battery transport but there is a simple solution. Buy the CR2032 battery holder from Digikey and have it shipped first class mail. Then head into town, Anchorage if you must, and head for a drugstore for the CR2032. [Elecraft] K3/P10
Since the E team hasn't yet put a P10 or P6/10 out for Beta testing, and probably won't for some time, might I suggest an excellent alternative. Advanced Receiver Research produces a whole series of pre-amps or LNAs from 0.1 MHz to over 900 MHz. If you are in need of a 10M one, they have a couple of choices that cover 28-30 MHz, with lower than you'll need noise figures. The one with the lower 15db gain is, $50, and the higher 24dB gain one is $ 80. To prevent minimum loss of the K3's dynamic range, you might want the one with the lower gain. Either one's size is about 1/2 of that of the P6, and they are well constructed. I believe that Ed, KL7UW , uses one of these for his 6M pre-amp, check his web site. Re: [Elecraft] battery power for backup
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Unfortunately, physical size is an issue, which is why I mentioned the coin cells. I don't know if a coin cell holder will fit in the available space, and I had thought of that possibility, but I will investigate further. The cells can be no larger than the 2032 size. However, I will investigate mounting the memory cells at another location inside the set and running wire leads to the original location. One of my applications is inside a FT-100D transceiver. Other sets probably have more elbow room and for those the battery holder is a good idea. And yes, I can purchase coin cells in any size or quantity I want at the local market, but none that have solder tabs or PC-mount pins. Thanks again for your suggestions. We now return you to your regularly scheduled reflector. - Jim, KL7CC On 11/1/2012 7:38 PM, Steve Jackson wrote: Jim I saw some incorrect answers fly about on the Elecraft reflector. Re: [Elecraft] Headphone recommendation for K3
Hello Barry, The Sennheiser HD238's are ON EAR headphones, as opposed to the ones people have been discussing which fit OVER the ear. I like both and often switch when one becomes uncomfortable. My current favorites (I'm a headphone junky): Earbuds: Skullcandy I just recently picked these up at Walmart on an impulse buy...headphone junky thing. There are literally hundreds of earbud manufacturers ranging in cost from a couple bucks to over $100. Take a look at your local electronics outlet, Walmart, Best Buy, etc. and pick out a pair that looks comfortable. I prefer the silicone ear tips to the foam style but everyone is different. In the ear: I picked up a pair of Shure SLC-2 in the ear monitor earphones brand new at a hamfest. I just use the little rubber tips. One of these days I may spend the money and have a custom molded insert made for these. You have to be fitted at an audiologist for these but I'd bet it's worth it. One can get really carried away with these custom molded in ear monitor earphones. I've seen the ones you see musicians use on stage that go for well over $1000.00. One the ear: Hands down, Koss Porta-Pro. I've owned these for years. I live near the Koss factory and the best part is their lifetime warranty. I've brought them into the repair depot several times over the years and they either repair or replace them. They also sell replacement earpads very little. Yes, they look a little weird but they are very comfortable. As long as you have a quiet shack they work great. Here's a link: http://www.koss.com/en/products/headphones/on-ear-headphones/PortaPro__Porta_Pro_On_Ear_Headphone Over the ear (with microphone): I operate very little SSB but when I do, I use, again, the Koss SB-40's that NK9G mentioned here. I've swapped the stock microphone element for a Heil DX cartridge (W4LT posted some instructions here on how to do the swap.) These are great headphones, a clone of the Yamaha CM500's with a different stock mic element. They are much more comfortable then the Heil headsets I have. I can only use the Heils for a few hours and then my ears hurt for hours afterwards. I can wear the SB-40's for hours and hours. Again, as someone pointed out, headset comfort and sound quality are very subjective. Use what works for you and that you like best. I often change headsets during a 48 hour contest every couple of hours. OK...I'm a little obsessed. When I show up with a new pair my XYL rolls her eyesshe doesn't get it. I pass the ones I don't like on to my kids. 73 Barry VK2BJ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html -- 73, Gary K9GS Greater Milwaukee DX Association: http://www.gmdxa.org Society of Midwest Contesters: http://www.w9smc.com CW Ops #1032 http://www.cwops.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2 number of parts?
If you are building a K2, or any Elecraft product for that matter, the first thing to do is to do a complete inventory of everything received. Sometimes, but not often, parts can be missing, or parts like toroidal cores can be broken in transit, and you can then get replacements from Elecraft before starting construction. The K2 resistors are on a bandolier in the sequence in which they are called for by the construction manual, but not so the capacitors. Two ways of dealing with capacitors: (1) get some empty pill bottles and into each put the capacitors of a given value. Mark the value on the bottle with a water insoluble fine felt pen, or, (2) cut a cardboard box around the perimeter at about half height to reveal the corrugations in the cardboard. Then place one leg of each capacitor in the corrugation voids in the order in which the construction manual calls for them. (An old Heathkit trick) Some sticky tape around the outside of the box covering the lower part of the exposed capacitor leg will stop them from falling out should the box be accidentally knocked. This is quite a lot of work, but it pays dividends in worry-free, easy, construction.
