[Elecraft] RemoteRig question

2013-01-17 Thread Hugh Bradley
I too operate a remote rig arrangement (K3 and K3/0) using a Mac computer.
The Remote Rig setup utilities will only work under Windows.
I installed Parallels and Windows XP on my iMac to do this.
Once set up, for operations purposes, you need not return to Windows again.

Re: [Elecraft] Is the K3 a fun radio to operate ?

2013-01-17 Thread Edward R Cole
I'm late in adding my comments as to fun, as it is after a day at
work reading the digest.

Ham radio is fun (most of the time) and frustrating at others.

I think the K3 has been the best radio I have had and that equals
more fun. It was more challenging to get acquainted with at first,
and I am still learning more aspects of using it.

My radio history: Ocean Hopper + DX35, HQ100, Clegg Interceptor-B,
SB-110, TenTec Argonaut, TS-180S, TenTec Scout, FT-840,
FT-847+FT-817, ...K3+KX3 (a few other VHF rigs not mentioned)

I think in the most part the K3 controls vs menu setting are about
right. I sure do not need a button to be pushed by accident when
working that last needed contact for such-n-such award and send
everything into limbo. Actually that is possible with the K3, as-is,
though I am getting better at recognizing what happened and reversing it.

The plus is that folks at Elecraft keep making improvements and
enhancements via firmware releases so I get a new fun radio to play
with after each upgrade. Fun = mastering something new!

I had a FT-817 with three layers of menu which was not fun to set
up. It has been replaced with the KX3...so much more radio performance on HF.

[Elecraft] K3- simplified remote tuning knob

2013-01-17 Thread Bill Clarke
I have found a cheap and effective answer to the problem that requires
no changes to the K3 and no soft in addition to the free version of HRD
that I am using.

I took a mouse apart and removed the opto-wheel's detent spring. The
wheel now spins freely. Although the diameter is small compared to a
real tuning knob - I can control the tuning speed from HRD. Works for me.

At some point in the future, I may take another mouse apart and remove
the optical encoder and build a new frame and enclosure for it - then
add a real sized tuning knob to same. However, having the smooth
tuning capability along with right and left clicks of the mouse is
really convenient.

Re: [Elecraft] Is the K3 a fun radio to operate ?

2013-01-17 Thread Wayne Burdick
The K3 has an average number of menu entries for a radio in its class.
But we've reduced the need to use the menu in two ways.

First, virtually every switch on the K3 has both tap and hold
functions. This doubles the number of functions available on the panel.

Second, the K3 has up to 10 switches that can be programmed to
directly execute menu functions or macros. Of these, up to four are
taps and six are holds. Macros are, in effect, fully customizable
switches (allowing the operator to define what fun means :)

Macros can be created using KX3 Utility and sent to the radio. A
single macro can do things like turn on the sub RX, copy VFO A to B,
move B up 2 kHz, enter split mode, and set BW to 200 Hz.

Now if we only had some decent labels to stick on those 10 switches

Conventional computer labels seem to last a couple weeks before peeling
off. Tiny writing isn't my strength so they are cryptic and only
marginally readable. M1-M4 require diagonal printing.

The other criterion is they have to come off at a desired time without
residue.

[Elecraft] K3 remote VFO (KX3 too, for that matter)

2013-01-17 Thread Brian Pepperdine

Just as a point of interest, while I have used HRD in the past, I mostly use
PSDR-IF with my K3 alongside LP-PAN.
But same thing applies to PSDR, NaP3 I expect and HRD.

I use a Logitech Evolution MX mouse, which has programmable buttons, but
moreover has an accelerating free spinning mouse wheel. The wheel functions
normally as all do until you give it a fast spin with a flick of your finger,
in which case it starts a rapid scrolling action until you stop the scrolling
by touching the spinning wheel.
You can run up and down your band frequencies quite quickly.

I assigned the buttons to be UP 5 kc or DOWN 5 kc (or 10 etc) as is setup in
the PSDR.
I think I have a couple buttons set up to do this, on the side of the mouse as
well as on the top to the left and right of the wheel.

FWIW.

Re: [Elecraft] Is the K3 a fun radio to operate ?

2013-01-17 Thread Phil Hystad
I never even thought of labeling those little switches.

I use a yellow sticky pad paper that describes the five different macros I have
created and what buttons trigger them. Very simple, easy to update, and right
in front of me. My K3 sits on a shelf about 11 inches above the desk top
surface and the sticky pad is attached to that shelf and right below the right
side where it is obvious and easy to see. I can't even conceive of a better,
absolutely programmable, set of labels. Easy to create, easy to edit, easy to
destroy with zero damage to the K3.

[Elecraft] K3 and APRS problem

2013-01-17 Thread VE3NFK
Hi
I have a K3 with internal 2 meter unit and USB Navigator with its USB audio
codec.
It works fine - can use the local repeaters etc; and on HF all the various
digital modes.

APRS with 'soundmodem' and UIView however does not work on the transmit
side.
Doesn't work with Win 7, Win 8, or Ubuntu.

To clarify - it receives all the other stations fine; I can hear my
transmission on other
local radios; but a reasonably local station does not get it (hear me)...

I have tried the various audio options (line out on K3, audio on USB codec,
settings
on Navigator, ensuring 'on frequency' and offset corrected to no avail) and
different antennas.

VERY occasionally ( 1 time out of a 100 or so) - it does make a connection.

I must be missing something - because it has worked in the past - but what?

Thanks for any new ideas.

Thanks for the explanation and plot. I will try your settings for the
slope/threshold. I do run a mast-mount SP-2000 for 2 meters with the internal
K144XV, works well together. I have not added a preamp on 6 meters yet.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC settings for weak signal CW

 Chad,

AGC doesn't kick in till way above weak signal on any reasonable values
of THR and slope. Of course a mast mounted preamp on 2M would help a
lot. One can get by with a back of the rig preamp for 6M. The stock K3
is deaf on 6M. For weak CW signal DXing, I had to add 15 db of low NF
preamp gain. Managed to finally finish 6M DXCC last year.

The prevailing DXer's are all over the map on where to set the threshold
 on HF bands.

I've decided to set slope/threshold to 12/12 here based upon some
measurements. Attached is the curve I generated.

The threshold determines where the AGC action starts. The slope is how
fast the audio rises with increasing signal above this point.

are holds. Macros are, in effect, fully customizable switches (allowing
the operator to define what fun means :)

Macros can be created using KX3 Utility and sent to the radio. A single
macro can do things like turn on the sub RX, copy VFO A to B, move B up
2 kHz, enter split mode, and set BW to 200 Hz.

[Elecraft] KX3 future sale

2013-01-17 Thread Keith Heimbold
I am sending up my KX3 serial 847 to Elecraft for the receiver mod, battery
installation and a new bezel because it has a small scratch. It is fully loaded
factory built with every possible feature (autotuner and filter, etc) and the
OEM mic and CW key.

I will likely getting back in three weeks and plan to sell it. I paid $1600 and
some change on it and plan to sell with box, original manual, microphone, cable
set, battery holder, DC to DC converter for mobile, and 13.8VDC 7 amp wall wart
for $1250.

It will be a couple weeks before I get it back. I will take payment from Paypal
preferred. Shipment to CONUS only.

Let me know if you are interested.

Re: [Elecraft] RX IQ sound card problems KX3

2013-01-17 Thread Peter Eijlander (PA0PJE)

Tabb,

I now have received my KX3 and it's working ok. Took me just part of an
evening to assemble it. Of course I did try the HDSDR software and
indeed I have the same hum, which is due to ground loops. I also
experienced the total lack of image suppression but that turned out to
be a bad contact in the 3.5 mm jack plug at the female end of the
adapter cable for 3.5 2.5 mm. Thoroughly cleaning the plug solved the
problem. Next step will be the isolation. The Softrock mixer has an
isolated BNC connector at it's input, therefore did not show this hum
problem.

You are seeing images. That is a result of either imbalance in your
soundcard gain settings for the I and Q settings or a failure ot the
application to adjust for those images. If you are using NaP3 as your
application, there are steps you can take to detect and cancel the
images - tune to a strong signal and the cancellation process is automatic.

I refer you to the archives on LP-Pan Yahoo group for more information.
Most of the information on NaP3 and PowerSDR-IF can be found there.

[Elecraft] K3 and Heath SB-610

2013-01-17 Thread Jan Ditzian
I have a K3-100 with KIO3 and KXV3, an Ameritron AL-82 amplifier, and a
Heath SB-610 RF display scope. The SB-610 is currently able to monitor
the K3 and AL-82 outputs during transmit, displaying either the
sinusoidal output or an RF Trap.

Has anyone used the K3 as an input to the SB-610 on receive? I am
interested in: (1) what the necessary IF setup is for the SB-610 (I may
have the components for the alternatives); (2) whether the KXV3 rear
panel IF output can be used; (3) what the display shows on receive given
the way you have set things up (frequency range).

Thank you,

Jan, KX2A

Dave,

The P3 NEEDS the upgrade to monitor the Tx of the K3 in all modes. This
will make it far more useful.

The wait for this has dragged on too long and still no word on a release

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Heath SB-610

2013-01-17 Thread Alan Bloom
The SB-610 is not a spectrum scope like the SB-620 so you can't get a
panadapter display. I don't know what IF frequency your unit is set up
for but you'd probably have to change the tuned circuit to the 8215 kHz
(sorry kc :=) IF of the K3. You likely also will need a preamp since
I believe the SB-610 was designed to connect to the last IF amplifier of
a receiver, not the first IF as in the K3.

I have a K3-100 with KIO3 and KXV3, an Ameritron AL-82 amplifier, and a

the K3 and AL-82 outputs during transmit, displaying either the
sinusoidal output or an RF Trap.

Thank you,

Jan, KX2A

[Elecraft] [KAT500] more antennas

2013-01-17 Thread ab2tc
Hi all,

I apologize if this is a little bit OT, but it isn't really. My remote
KAT500 is currently maxed out with a G5RV and two resonant dipoles for 10m
and 15m (all working great). I am looking for an easy way to add my 80m
resonant dipole to the mix and have decided that building a diplexer that
would enable me to share one port for the 10m and 80m antennas should be an
easy way to accomplish this. Design programs for these are easy to find and
basically tell me that I need two inductors about 1.1-1.2uH. What toroid
core should I choose for bulding an efficient inductor like this that would
handle at least 500W on 3.8MHz and 28.5MHz?

Re: [Elecraft] Remote power on for k3/0 via remote rig or other

2013-01-17 Thread Mitch Wolfson DJØQN

Hi John,

I think you meant to say that you want to turn on your remote K3 using a
K3/0?

If you bought the cable set, then there is a cable included that plugs
in between the K3's ACC jack and the RRC's I/O jack. Then all you do is
press the power button on your K3/0 at the remote locations and the K3
turns on automatically. It is obvious that the RRC's must be programmed
per the manual.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] more antennas

2013-01-17 Thread Walter Underwood
You can usually drive resonant dipoles in parallel without a diplexer. This is
how fan dipoles work. The non-resonant ones will present a high impedance, so
the power goes to the resonant one.

Re: [Elecraft] P3

2013-01-17 Thread Richard Fjeld
They will have to pry the P3 out of my cold, dead, hands. I don't like to
think of my age, much less tell it, but I found it easy to set up and program
the buttons with time saving operations that I like. I calibrated it with my
XG2 so that I can see the actual signal strength on the P3 without needing to
turn on my pre-selector or use ABS in the K3. I seldom need to use a menu for
anything. When I get bored, there is more I can learn, and program. Eric and
Wayne had vision when they planned the pair.

I have not seen it mentioned how it displays in real-time without the latency
that is seen with computer/screen pan-adapters. I'll bet there is a side by
side comparison of such on YouTube. Anybody have a link handy that shows it?

Re: [Elecraft] P3

2013-01-17 Thread Gary Gregory
Using the P3 to 'look' at the pile-up and setting a frequency to call on IS
the single most important benefit of the P3 (for me) and this works a treat.
As for 'other' uses I find it uninspiring as I don't have any need for a HD
large screen external display. I am portable 24/7 and there IS a limit on
'stuff' I can drag around...:-)
The introduction of the Tx 'option' long promised but as yet not spoken
about with any clarity IS a great feature (when it arrives) and for me
something to look forward too.

Don't get me wrong, it IS a typical great product and useful tool!

Re: [Elecraft] P3

2013-01-17 Thread Jim Miller
As a mostly CW OP chasing DX I find the P3 to be a huge advantage in
watching the behavior of the DX OP to determine his likely next move and
place my signal accordingly. I got mine when I was still QRP and I credit
it with allowing me to achieve DXCC in just three months. I've since added
the 100w option and now the KPA500 but being loud doesn't help if you're in
the wrong place.

With the P3 it's almost like cheating.

BTW, loud to me is loud compared to my previous 5W existence. My QTH is in
a CCR no antennas neighborhood so my modest antennas lurk in the woods.
Wire dipoles, wire verticals and a hexbeam (also wires.)

[Elecraft] KX3 with a KPA500

2013-01-17 Thread AC6JA
I currently have my K3 hooked up to the KPA500 and KAT500 using the
optional band data cable.
What would be the cleanest way to be able to hook up the KX3 to the
KPA500/KAT500 with the least amount of cable swapping?
Obviously I would need a coax switch to switch the RF input from the K3 to
the KX3.
I'm curious about the ALC and PTT lines? What can be left connected?
Has anybody tried this setup yet?
Let me know.
Thanks.

The P3/SVGA is the single most useful piece in the K3 line one of the main
reasons I chose the line was this feature and the K3 receiver. I know
several ops that feel the same way also about the panadapter.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 with a KPA500

2013-01-17 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

H Mike,

Only amp keying and RF from the KX3 (or any other rig) must be fed the
amp. No alc is needed with the Kx3 due to its low drive level.

The KPA500 will automatically and seamlessly band switch when the KX3
first transmits on a new band by using its internal frequency counter.

[Elecraft] KX3 with KAT500 and KPA500

2013-01-17 Thread eric norris
The KX3 will work fine with the KAT500 without disconnecting anything.  If you
have set the tuning solutions previously with the K3 it will automatically
select the antenna and solution--but not autotune.

To use the KPA500 with the KX3 you must disconnect the Elecraft cable carrying
band data or it will not bandswitch.  I don'think this could be fixed in
firmware but it would be really cool if it could.

I found it highly amusing to watch my KAT500 switching--and even autuning--with
the fleet of boat anchors I used on straight key night.

[Elecraft] P3

2013-01-17 Thread eric norris
The P3 is great for contesting and DXing, but I find it very useful for casual
operating also.

You can instantly see when a band is open.  You can find the holes in all the
man-made noise on 40 meters, and see how it is moving.  You can often identify
the type of noise--there are online screen shots to compare the noise with.  I
used this to identify an ultrasonic pest repeller that my neighbor uses that
plagues me on 6m.  If you're on at odd times, you can find the one signal on at
3am.  You can see if other stations are splattering.  You can easily see meteor
burns on WSJT meteor scatter, and even stronger signals off the moon.

After 38 years of hamming, it only took a week for me to feel naked without it.
I am looking forward to the eventual added tx monitoring capability.

There are various discussions both on and off this list about how to set
up the K3 with the Signalink USB when using WSPR, but I ran into a
problem with the K3 staying in XMIT after sending was complete.
Solutions were available online, just none that solved my issue. These
settings got my K3 working on WSPR. The setup listed for the K3 and
Signalink are also working with RMS Express and DM-780.
