[Elecraft] KX3 beta firmware rev 1.87-better AM BCB sensitivity

2014-01-15 Thread Edward R Cole
I installed beta rev. 1.87 and selected the BCB=160 and observed my
local AM station on 920 KHz go from S8 to S9+5 with PRE on set at 20-dB.

I then tuned down to 495 KHz and am able to see signals at S9 that
were at noise level before! Noise floor is S6 with BCB=160/PRE
ON. With BCB=NOR everything is S0 at 495 KHz.

This quick test was into my 80m inverted-V and not the 600m
inverted-L (which needs repairs).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - No speaker output

2014-01-15 Thread Stewart
Mine failed with a stereo (not a mono) plug which had been inserted prior to
the
K3 being powered on.

The external speaker of 8 ohms was wired onto the left channel (plug tip),
therefore the right channel did not have a load at the time. Don't know if this
causes a problem.

The fault occurred when the AF gain on my K3 was advanced to approx 12 o'clock,
at which point the audio out the speaker failed.

So, the fault was NOT caused by shorting either of the outputs, or plugging in
the speaker with the K3 powered on.

My K3 is an early Ser # 307

I'm not sure anyone fully understands the failure
 mechanisms in the speaker amplifier.

The new $2.36 mod adds 1 ohm resistors in series with the audio
output channels. Hopefully that will do some good.

 Dick,

If you have an early K3 *and* you plugged a mono connector into
 the rear
speaker jack, one channel was shorted by the mono connector. That
 will
cause failure of the audio amp for the speaker.
Later K3s (I don't know the serial number) have protection for
 that
shorting condition. The best protection is not to put a mono
 plug into
the speaker jack. If you want mono, cut off the mono plug and
 connect
only the tip and shell to your speaker - the ring does not
 connect to
 anything.

Re: [Elecraft] Requirements for keying a KXPA100

2014-01-15 Thread John Marvin
I got a variety of suggestions, and decided to go the easiest route
(since it worked) of removing the current limiting resistor and
switching the diode to a schottky diode. The extra diode is required in
my case because the PTT also keys an internal TX preamp whose keying
circuit is run on 13.8V. Without the diode this circuit (unless I chose
another suggestion of creating two separate PTT drivers on the
transceiver) would see the floating 5V in the KXPA100 as a relative
ground, so just connecting the KXPA100 key line would have caused the
internal TX preamp to be keyed.

It was clear that a current limiting resistor was not required for
either the internal TX keying circuit or the KXPA100 (they key current
is about 1 mA for each of them). I decided if a current limiting
resistor is required for keying another amp I can build an external
adapter cable that includes the resistor for that use case.

With the schottky diode in place the Hermes transceiver pulls the
KXPA100 key line down to about 0.39 volts, which should be enough to
trigger it with hopefully a comfortable margin. Everything appears to be
working properly now, so now I get to play!

Anyway, thanks to all for the helpful suggestions.

John

[Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 SWR Problem WHITE SMOKE!

2014-01-15 Thread Ray Coles
I am pleased to relate that I seem to have finally nailed this problem, and
I think many of those who gave me helpful advice and the Elecraft design
team will be interested in learning what the final diagnosis and cure turned
out to be. A quick recap: About 2 months ago, operating at about 75W into my
trusty OCFD, the KAT500, KPA500 and K3 SWR readings shot up into the red and
all DX fun ended abruptly. The problem remained, so I started looking for
the culprit: I pruned tree branches that were touching the antenna after a
recent storm. No joy. I replaced my 300W 4:1 balun at the end of my RG58
buried coax feeder with a 1KW unit. No Joy. I replaced the buried RG58
feeder with UR8 which took a new route, avoiding burial. No Joy. I dropped
the antenna and replaced the 300ohm twin feeder from the balun to the T
piece, the T piece itself and the antenna wire and dog bones. No joy. At
this point I consulted the Reflector Oracle, and the most common response
was common mode current on the feeder caused by OCFD unbalance. I did
research and decided to build the renowned GM3SEK choke balun. I chose the
mid range version which covers broadly 5-14MHz and installed it just south
of my 4:1 balun at the North end of the feeder. No Joy. Further ideas from
reflector pundits suggested that it might still be common mode, but coupled
from the antenna into the feeder where my GM3SEK choke wouldn't help.

Fortunately I had bought enough Fair Rite oval cores to build all three
(Lo/Mid/Hi) balun designs, so in a final roll of the dice I built the two
core Hi Band balun and installed it in the Shack next to my rig. The hi band
version has a fairly flat impedance curve and reaches down to 7MHz and up to
30MHz. IT WORKED! I have run 100W on all the bands from 40m to 10m and I
have seen no run away SWR readings. My 25W tune value stays rock solid. As a
final push-my luck step I turned the KPA500 to operate and ran 400W SSB. No
Sweat! All of these things were no-nos yesterday.

The final diagnosis is as follows: Some simple fault perhaps a connector or
a crimp termination caused the first occurrence. I then compounded the
problem by replacing my buried RG58 with an unburied and, I now see, a more
parallel routed feeder which locked the problem in via antenna coupled
common-mode currents. This also explains the fact that I could keep
operating provided I kept power below 40W. Some respondents felt there was a
KAT problem which compounded the problem, I always felt that the problem lay
outside the shack but that maybe, just maybe, the KAT might be a bit
sensitive to the problem. The only thing I would ask the Elecraft design
team to investigate is whether the SWR circuitry has to respond to the
common mode currents as it does. Probably not a firmware issue though!
Thanks to the many people who made so many helpful suggestions. E Pluribus
Unum!

The Bose Companion speakers are great. The RF shielding seems to work quite
well. Speakers are a little bassy but that can be EQ'd out. I am happy with
mine. You may need to adjustments to get full separation while using VFO's a
b. The combined effect is good for sideband but you want to separate them for

2014-01-15 Thread Wayne Burdick
The final addition to the AF amp protection circuitry was phased into
production about a year ago. I'm trying to determine what the first S/N was.
We'll also be making this available as a mod kit shortly.

There have been a few other improvements to the AF amp circuitry, all phased
into production a long time ago. These are listed on the K3 mods page. The K3
owner who posted about not having speaker output has a very old K3 (~S/N 300)
which had none of the upgrades. AF amp problems are now exceedingly rare.

Bob;

Check the K3-KPA500 AUX cable. It is possible that one of the pins is bent and
is not touching another pin (or the shell), causing the problem. If so, try to
carefully straighten the pin so as not to break it, although most likely you
would need to replace the cable.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 audio quirk

2014-01-15 Thread Hjalmar Duklæt
I have noticed something similar, but that has nothing to do with the KXPA100.
Whe I switch on NR, the audio is muted. Pushing the PBT button to get NORM
bandwith gets the audio back, but if I try to change the bandwith it is muted
again. Strange. Without NR on there is no such strange behaviour.73 de Hal/la4xx

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 SWR Problem WHITE SMOKE!

2014-01-15 Thread Stephen Prior
Good news Ray, I swear by Ian's choke design. It has worked miracles
here. As I mentioned in an earlier post I went straight to the 3 section
GM3SEK choke, in fact two of them, one at each end of the coax section.
Works a treat. I can't speak highly enough of the KPA500/KAT500
combination.

73 Stephen G4SJP

On 15 January 2014 15:59, Ray Coles raycole...@gmail.com wrote:

I am pleased to relate that I seem to have finally nailed this problem, and
I think many of those who gave me helpful advice and the Elecraft design
team will be interested in learning what the final diagnosis and cure
 turned
out to be. A quick recap: About 2 months ago, operating at about 75W into
 my
trusty OCFD, the KAT500, KPA500 and K3 SWR readings shot up into the red
 and
all DX fun ended abruptly.

The hi
 band
version has a fairly flat impedance curve and reaches down to 7MHz and up
 to
30MHz. IT WORKED! I have run 100W on all the bands from 40m to 10m and I
have seen no run away SWR readings. My 25W tune value stays rock solid. As
 a
final push-my luck step I turned the KPA500 to operate and ran 400W SSB. No

Some respondents felt there was
 a
KAT problem which compounded the problem, I always felt that the problem
 lay
outside the shack but that maybe, just maybe, the KAT might be a bit
sensitive to the problem. The only thing I would ask the Elecraft design
team to investigate is whether the SWR circuitry has to respond to the
common mode currents as it does. Probably not a firmware issue though!
Thanks to the many people who made so many helpful suggestions. E Pluribus
 Unum!

[Elecraft] Scary K2 event this morning!!

2014-01-15 Thread Eddy
To K2 Wizards et al

A scary event this morning involving my 3500+ K2 which was
realigned by Gary a few months ago…..by-the-way, Gary did an outstanding job
and my K2 never has worked better!!

This morning, K2-100 and KAT100 tuner, rig was working FB
Tuesday night, I turned it on from cold start in cold room this morning and the
K2 cooling fan immediately started running…..weird……when I transmitted I
immediately (remember, rig is still cold from sitting overnight) got a PA HOT
error message!!!  The K2 heat sink was
cold to the touch, by-the-way.
WTF!??

Powered off K2, turned back on and same error message.
Next  time, power K2 and 12vdc supply. Powered
back on DC supply, then K2 and got same PA HOT message….now it’s getting scary!

WTF…….I pull off all cabling and run K2 into dummyload.
Power back up and PA HOT error again! Now I’m considering a hardware reset which
I really don’t want to do.

So…….for grins and gigglys this time I turned K2 off, DC
power supply off and removed the 12vdc cable  from back of K2 and voila, when I
reconnected DC power, K2 operating
normal again and back on air making 100w thru KAT100 into dummyload and into
dipole.
So, for my K2 wizard friends, any thoughts what happened? I’m
thinking a relay got “suck” in some weird state and took all this to get
everything
reset again?

I do appreciate any and all advice y’all can offer.

Hi Ed,
This has happened to me. I heat my house with a wood stove and the
radio shack is far away from it. When the door is closed it can get
quite cold in there. As Wayne explained to me when my fan started up
on one frosty morning it is because he is from California and knows
little about weather below 0 degrees Centigrade :) The firmware for
starting the fan depends on the temperature reading. Just wait until
the room warms up the K2 and it should work just fine.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3+KXPA100 operation improved when running from a 12-V battery

2014-01-15 Thread Kenneth A Christiansen
Hi to the group.

I hope the group wasn't thinking my test conditions were my recommendations for
running the KX3-KXPA100 station. I purposely set it up under marginal
conditions to test the new software and originally to test the old software.
The battery is over 4 years old and I may replace it this spring. There were 3
fuses in the circuit and the KX3 was getting it's power from the duel socket on
the KXPA100. The old battery was several tenths of a volt lower than my newer
battery although it definitely does not have a dead cell. I could solve much of
the problem with the original software just by running the KX3 directly off the
battery. A new battery would also help. My goal when camping is 6 db over 5
watts which is 20 watts or 10 db over 5 watts which is 50 watts. I ran at 100
watts on my dummy load to make the entire test as tough as possible. I run
almost 100% CW when I am camping as even low power RTTY or PSK31 draws much
more total currant from the battery then CW in an hour of operating.

Fargo has two 50 KW broadcast stations in the area so I was not surprised when
I tuned in a 5 KW station that was 230 miles from me that I had the
interference problem with the 160 position. I was pleased that the NOR position
still worked but having said that I can see myself using the 160 position when
I camp in the north wood of Minnesota.

Once again I appreciate these two new options and they are meant to be used
with reasonable care.

At lower voltages, especially in voice modes, you should consider dialing
back power output to preserve the amplifier's headroom. For example, if the
supply is dipping below 11 V, I back the power down to about 50 W, just to be
safe. This is only a 3-dB drop in power but it'll be a little easier on the
gear. For higher/lower voltages, adjust accordingly.

Of course the amp and radio will protect themselves if, due to reduced
voltage, you exceed a threshold of current drain, temperature, or other
 parameters.

Re: [Elecraft] Scary K2 event this morning!!

2014-01-15 Thread Don Wilhelm

Eddy,

If you turned it on when its temperature was below 0 degF, that can happen.
The programmer's bug-a-boo of a maximum number of 255 and a minimum of
000 has bitten you.
When the numbers decrease to below 000, the next lower number is 255 -
which indicates a really hot K2! Even if it is not true.

It is not really a big problem and can be solved easily in the menu.
Let it acclimate to the ambient temperature (an hour or so powered off)
- and measure that temperature in degC.

Then enter the K2 menu for TPA and edit the parameter.
Set the parameter to match the temperature in degC and exit the menu
Job done.

In the future, let the K2 warm up above freezing before powering it on
and that will not happen.

[Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 + ocf dipole

2014-01-15 Thread David Cutter
I happen to think that the K line and the off-centre-fed dipole make for an
ideal compact station, particularly for those with very restricted land on
which to put just one aerial. As you have concluded, common mode current
must be conquered and I think the GM3SEK chokes are ideal where weight is
not a factor, eg on the ground and in the shack. I built one in a
weather-proof box with the LF version and the HF version all in together for
a very neat solution.

Your problems were mainly with transmit, but these chokes also work on
receive keeping noise off the coax which would otherwise creep right inside
the radio.

As others have said, you need a choke at the feed point after the balun and
others down the line depending on your layout. A feeder that does not drop
vertically from the aerial induces further cmc onto the coax. Another good
and easy thing to do is ground the coax shield before it enters the house,
but not everyone can do that, so a choke at the radio does the job.

DJ0IP/NJ0IP is putting data on his website from a very large number of
measurements on various combinations of ocf dipoles to show which chokes and
baluns work best. His project is not yet finished but it is the most
comprehensive set of measurements I have seen on practical aerials.

David
G3UNA

...the most common response

was common mode current on the feeder caused by OCFD unbalance. I did
research and decided to build the renowned GM3SEK choke balun. I chose the
mid range version which covers broadly 5-14MHz and installed it just south
of my 4:1 balun at the North end of the feeder. No Joy. Further ideas from
reflector pundits suggested that it might still be common mode, but
coupled

from the antenna into the feeder where my GM3SEK choke wouldn't help.

Fortunately I had bought enough Fair Rite oval cores to build all three
(Lo/Mid/Hi) balun designs, so in a final roll of the dice I built the two
core Hi Band balun and installed it in the Shack next to my rig. The hi
band
version has a fairly flat impedance curve and reaches down to 7MHz and up
to

30MHz. IT WORKED! I have run 100W on all the bands from 40m to 10m and I
have seen no run away SWR readings. My 25W tune value stays rock solid. As
a
final push-my luck step I turned the KPA500 to operate and ran 400W SSB.
No

Sweat! All of these things were no-nos yesterday.

Re: [Elecraft] Scary K2 event this morning!!

2014-01-15 Thread Don Wilhelm

Make that 0 degC - not F!
73,
Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] How do I generate a Key Down to tune an external 6m amp?

2014-01-15 Thread Bob KD7YZ
My Old viproplex Bug does the cw for me and there seems to not be an
available jack for an old straight key.
I have configured some settings in order to keep me form applying power
before a PTT action closes a sequencer.

Thus I seem to have made it so that pressing Xmit or hold-xmit/Tune will
NOT issue a PTT action however will send out RF. This does not close
PTT anywhere so the Sequencer does bot close the relay on the PA and I
can't rune it up.

I can push the foot-switch and the relays all close. However, there is
no steady RF. Just what I can make in dots or dashes

Is there a way to get key-down WITH a closed PTT so external 6m PA comes on?

Re: [Elecraft] How do I generate a Key Down to tune an external 6m amp?

2014-01-15 Thread WILLIS COOKE
The easy way is to hold the dash on the bug.  If you want to use a straight key
just wire it across the terminals on the bug.  You don't need but one key
input.  The way the old telegraphers used a bug was to insert the flat
connector between the base and the copper/brass strip that connects to the
contact on the straight key and the straight key was permanently bolted to the
desk and wired to the telegraph line.

[Elecraft] KXPA100 Assembly Manual Suggestion

2014-01-15 Thread Tighe Kuykendall
I assembled KXPA100 #333 this evening and have 2 assembly manual
suggestions.

1. Figure 4 on Page 6 and Figure 10 on Page 11 show the tabs for
attaching the cable shield oriented in the 12 o'clock position. I
assembled them that way and found the Ant1 and Ant2 coax to be stressed
at the connector when attaching the end panel. I rotated the tabs 90deg
counter clockwise so they're facing the 9 o'clock position and and found
it much easier on the coax. I also gave each tab a 45deg bend for less
pull on the coax.

2. Figure 6 on Page 8. The warning just above the picture says Place
one lock washer between each standoff and the LPF board. Figure 19 on
Page 16 has a warning that says If you failed to install two lock
washers under each standoff as shown in Figure 6 on Page 8 I only
put one washer and mine seemed to fit okay. But they're conflicting
warnings.

Awesome kit which assembled in roughly an hour. Looking forward to
using it!
