[Elecraft] KXPA ATU Operation
I think I am having some issues with my KXPA 100, possibly the ATU. Could someone please verify or refute these findings? Here is what I am seeing: 1) 25W and SWR LEDs linger on for 1.5 to 2 seconds after key up. They just stay on, then fade, flicker, and finally go out. 2) The ATU seems to tune about .1 to .2 SWR units below the KX3 ATU. It doesn't seem to be as fast either and struggles more to get a good match. 3) The AMP switches out during a tuning cycle. I am seeing about a 1.5 second delay in switching the amp back in after tuning. If I tune and then immediately transmit, I sometimes get caught transmitting at the tuning power level with the amp switched out. There is a distinct click when the amp switches back in. Perhaps a relay is hanging up. 4) I am seeing instances in which the amp will tune with an SWR of 1.2 and if I operate at low powers the LEDs on the amp indicate this low SWR. However, when I turn the power up to 30+ watts, I am getting erratic SWR indications in the 2-3 range on the amp LEDS. The display on the KX3 still shows 1.2 but the LEDs and the KXPA100 utility show the higher SWR as the last SWR. The power out seems to fluctuate with the higher SWR indications also. It is like the ATU is dropping tune at higher powers. I am wondering if maybe I have some RF getting into the control cables. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Resonate noise on audio
Don, When the first set of pictures were taken the audio output was in attenuate mode with a minimal AF setting, the signalink Rx gain was set to 25% ish, and the PC mic input gain was set to 25%. The only thing that changed between pictures was the VFO. Last night I had a little time to double check this and had the same results. To rule out the signalink as the culprit I swapped over to the PC's mic input with the same result. Pretty confident it is coming from the radio now. Tonight I will open her up to double check the crystal insulators are in place and bypass the SSB card. Thanks for the input guys. Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] New Elecraft Product: K3/0-Mini Remote Front Panel
Further to my message attached - I decided to download the KPA500 Remote Software and see if it would work just using the same transparent COM1 channel I had been using for the KPAUtil approach - and it seems to work just fine. It only took a few seconds to cycle thru a number of Com ports until it found Com1 and connected to the remote KPA500. The only minor glitch so far is that I tried out the Mini Mode display (which was ok) but when I switched back to the normal sized display, the “AMP ON” label at the bottom of the screen has been cut off. This new software provides a much nicer display of the operating parameters and the bar graph presentation is much easier to read at a glance. Looks like another very useful product from Elecraft. [Elecraft] PLEASE!
Hi All, I know this is probably the umpteenth time for this request, but it seems to need repeating. When you reply to a post on this list, PLEASE, PLEASE, trim what you copy over from previous posts! This is particularly problematic for those of us who take the digest form. I just went through the last digest (Volueme 119, issue 36), and the trail of prior postings is incredible! Some had 5 or 6 prior posts attached, and all of those had those same previous ones as well. That's insane! I know at least one or two lists where not properly trimming attachments would get you a hand slap (or more) from the moderator. But it is really bad form, and just clogs up the server with excess gunk! Anyway, it would be much appreciated if folks would be a bit more considerate, and help to make this reflector a more convenient tool to use. Just my opinion, and not trying to moderate, but I do think it is wholly appropriate for anyone to make such a request. Thanks. Re: [Elecraft] PLEASE!
Dave's comments and request are on target. I switched from digest to regular email for that reason. With email I built a filter so all these posts go into an Elecraft folder vs. my Inbox -- and now am pleased I switched from digest. In contrast, on the Yahoo reflectors the default seems to be to not quote the message replied to. When that happens I'm often puzzled since there is *no* context. So a good balance is a good thing. Just IMHO :-) 73, Phil w7ox On 3/20/14, 8:14 AM, Dyarnes wrote: When you reply to a post on this list, PLEASE, PLEASE, trim what you copy over from previous posts! [Elecraft] KX3 / NaP3 Question
I'm running NAp3 v2.2.4.2 on Windows 8.1, connected to the RX I/Q port on my KX3 at one end and to the Line In jack on an iMac on the other end. As some other folks have seen, there is an initial issue with images or duplicated signals when NaP3 starts up. Ken (W0CZ) tipped me to a way to get rid of the image issue by opening the NaP3 Config panel, going to the DSP tab, and then doing a Calibrate. This works quite well and just about completely eliminates those images. However When I key the KX3, I see my own signal (quite strong) on the NaP3 display and this completely throws out the calibration, bringing back the images, big time. I have tried several things to eliminate this: First, I tried using a PTT switch with the KX3 instead of QSK - I still see my signal on the pan display. Then, I pressed XMIT on the KX3 prior to keying it - no change, still see my signal. Next, I built an audio isolator to put in the line between the KX3 and the Line In jack on the iMac. No change. Finally, I wound the cable through a 2.4 mix 31 ferrite core nine times, thinking that maybe RF was somehow getting things hosed. That didn't help. So, my questions are: why am I seeing my signal from the KX3 RX I/Q when I transmit? Shouldn't that line be cut off completely when the KX3 goes into transmit? If not, can this be changed so it does? :-) Jim / W6JHB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Hi Jim, I'm running NaP3 v2.8.8 on Win7 Pro 64bit with my K3, so this may not be applicable, but it could be worth a try. In the NaP3 help file under the Menu/DSP contents where it tells you how to do the calibrate that you have previously done. It also tells you how after you have done your calibration you can then set the WBIR to *Manual*. Try that, I believe it will force NaP3 to maintain the preset *Manual* levels even after the changes during transmit. hope it works for you -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan On 3/20/2014 12:30 PM, Jim Bennett wrote: I'm running NAp3 v2.2.4.2 on Windows 8.1, connected to the RX I/Q port on my KX3 at one end and to the Line In jack on an iMac on the other end. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 / NaP3 Question
Hi That's interesting. In principle the automatic Iq routines should just handle this IF the signal is on the Iq signal itself since it would also have an image and thus the routines would just suppress it. Since it doesn't perhaps the signal is just getting into the sound card and thus NaP3 just tries to balance it and that screws up the current calibration. Here's a test. See if you see a signal with the Iq lines disconnected. If you do then having something that turns off the KX3 s Iq will do nothing. Therefore it would have to be handled somehow by NaP3. Probably the best way would be to have a threshold where if the, signal was above this, then it would not be considered in the calculations. That is preferable to turning off the auto balance since the correction is frequency dependent. 73s Tom Original message From: Jim Bennett w6...@mac.com Date: 20/03/2014 13:30 (GMT-05:00) To: Elecraft Reflector Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 / NaP3 Question __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] (no subject)
Hello to the group! I am KT4JR, wife of K4MWE (Larry). He uses PSK a lot but we set it up a year ago and did not make a backup of the settings. Somehow the settings were lost and we are having trouble reconstructing a working config. We can transmit, and FLdigi tracks the frequency on the radio, but we are not receiving. Specifics: Elecraft KX3 with KXPA100 tuner/amp attached, Windows 7 computer with iMic external sound card. FLdigi Config set to use HamLib and port audio but PTT via HamLib is NOT checked (using VOX instead). Com port and baud rate are the same we use to install new software updates to the radio, so that works. I know there are PSK signals to be received because we can see them on our other rig upstairs, but nothing shows on the KX3. I just saw in a FLdigi help group post that I should use debug-level-5 and I will go learn how to do that. Any other ideas?? KX3 is set to Data A with VOX on, bandwidth at 4 THANKS!! Elecraft eMail LIST GUIDELINES 2014 For those of you who are new to the list, (and for those of us who have rapidly failing memories.. , here is a quick list of things to remember when posting to this list. Please save this for future reference. The most important thing to remember is that this is only a hobby - Let's have fun! The PRIMARY purposes of this list are to provide a polite and enjoyable forum for discussing Elecraft products, share mods, new ideas, feedback to Elecraft, share troubleshooting ideas etc. The Elecraft email list server (reflector) is provided to further the discussion of Elecraft products and related items. It serves as a forum for the discussion of both technical and operating topics including product features, construction and debug problems, sharing your enthusiasm and impressions from using our products and more general ham radio related topics of interest to our customers. 1. YOU MUST BE SUBSCRIBED to the [Elecraft] list TO POST to it. (This is done to stop advertising spammers from hitting the list.) Any postings sent to elecraft@mailman.qth.net by addresses different from the exact ones it shows as subscribers will be rejected. This includes alias (forwarded) addresses like w1...@arrl.net. If you use an alias to subscribe you must have it as your from: and return address too. Subscribing with w...@arrl.net from your physical address of j...@aol.com will allow you to receive postings, but your postings to the list will be rejected if their from: and reply to: address does not match your subscribe address.. Go to http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft to subscribe and to change your list preferences. To unsubscribe or to change your list preferences (digest, no mail on/off etc.), scroll to the bottom of the page and log in with your subscribed email address and the password that was sent to you by email when you subscribed (and sent to you each month). 2. If you want to provide an attachment, .JPG picture or other large file for use on the list, first post it to your personal web page and then post a link to its address in an email to the list. The list strips all attachments to prevent viruses from propagating and to keep the archives at a reasonable size. 3. Please keep the amount of copied text from previous posts to an -ABSOLUTE MINIMUM- in your replies. Always delete -everything- , including the list footer, from the prior post except what is necessary to keep your reply in context. Most copied messages can be reduced to one or two sentences to retain context. Remember to delete the email list footer from the previous post and especially avoid copying a long posting and adding 'Me Too!' or something similar. As the number of users on this list grows we need to work to minimize information overload... If a reply is -not- of interest to the list, just reply directly to the posting party. 4. EMAIL OVERLOAD: If you are overloaded by the volume of individual messages on the list, You can view the daily Elecraft list messages for each month in web format at: http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html . These archives are updated hourly and list postings by subject. (the Nabble archive looks very useful.) Just click on the ones you are interested in to read. You can also set your Elecraft list email preferences to 'no mail' delivery, which still allows you to post to the list when reading via the digest. You can also change your subscription to the DIGEST version, which sends you a single compilation each day. To change your email list options or to subscribe / unsubscribe, go to: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Scroll to the bottom of the page to log into your preferences page and set your mail options to 'no mail'. 4a. Please make an effort to keep list volume under control by resisting the urge to post a comment on every long discussion thread (CW, Soldering etc.) With thousands of list subscribers volume can quickly get out of control if everyone feels the need to comment. While we do not overly restrict the subject matter on this list, please remember that its primary focus is on Elecraft products, and their use. Many people rely on it for pointers on building, using and troubleshooting their rigs. Other ham Radio topics are OK, but please keep the posts on non-Elecraft topics under control. 4b. *** When emailing about a specific rig or option, please add the rig/option name(s) to the first part of your email subject line. (K1, K2, K3, KX1 etc.) This will be a huge help for those experiencing email overload and will allow automatic filtering based on subject line. Examples: Subject: [K3] Filter Options Subject: [KX1] How to use ped portable? Subject: [XG2] Wow! Its a big help. 5. *** IMPORTANT - PLEASE KEEP ALL POSTINGS CORDIAL. Restrain the urge to email someone admonishing them about a posting, or snidely commenting on it. The last thing we
[Elecraft] Important List Guideline - Please Keep it Polite, Respectful and Brief
As per our Elecraft list guidelines, it is inappropriate to post and say someone should -not- have made a posting, or to rudely criticize someone for making ANY posting. (All technical questions, no matter how basic, are appropriate.) Its OK to point out that something is illegal or inappropriate, if done respectfully. This is an open forum focused on Elecraft products, their use and other ham radio topics (within reason), but it -is- moderated. It is not a free for all. (See other discussion lists and the rec.radio.amateur... newsgroups for an example of a free-for-all.. ;-) In general I try to moderate with the lightest hand possible and not to censor or limit list postings. But that requires your cooperation and thoughtful tolerance of others. I manage our daily business at Elecraft, so I may not always jump in a quickly as some would like. I also even get weekends off from time to time ;-) Please treat -everyone- on the list as if they were a *close friend* that you were -politely- speaking to face to face. Personal criticisms, tart replies, sarcasm and threats etc are in direct contradiction to the list guidelines. Please also make the -minimum- number of postings possible and please keep them short. It is never necessary to vote 'me too', as that only adds to list overload for others. As always, if you have a concern about a posting, please email the moderator (me). I may not respond to all of those emails directly, but I do read all of them and take appropriate action when needed. And most important, Amateur Radio is simply a hobby, so let's have fun and share our enjoyment of and enthusiasm for the hobby with others. 73, Eric WA6HHQ Elecraft List Moderator (and modulator..) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Crikey! Please edit replies down to a minimum size and delete extra footers
Official List Policy: When replying to emails on the list, please remember to edit down the copied text to the minimum needed to retain context. One or two sentences from the original post are usually sufficient. This keeps the list and archive volume down and makes everything much more readable. *** Don't forget to delete the list footer message too or you will have multiple copies of it in your reply. A large part of our readers get the list in daily digest mode. When large amounts of previous posts are copied over and over it makes the digest very large and virtually unreadable. Also, many of our readers outside the U.S. pay for email by the kB and are using slower internet connections. Brevity in your posts helps a lot there. :-) 73 from your friendly Elecraft list manager Eric WA6HHQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] How to avoid Elecraft list email overload: Nabble and other web archives
Instead of receiving an email for every posting, you can stop emails and read and search the list via a convenient web based list archive. Nabble and mail-archive.com are two excellent Elecraft list archives accessed via our web page. See: http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html There is a 'no mail' option on your elecraft list personal configuration page - accessed after you sign up. Go to the following page and scroll down to the bottom to enter your list password (assigned when you sign up) to log into your personal configuration page. http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft This link also appears at the bottom of every elecraft email list posting. Setting your list email preference to 'no mail' delivery allows you to read the list via Nabble and other web based searchable and threaded archives, and still post to the list. (The list requires you to be subscribed to make postings, in order to stop spam posting from reaching our subscribers.) 73, Eric WA6HHQ List moderator -- __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Lost your list Password? - Here's how to get it.
If you have misplaced your elecraft list password, or if you never received it, here is how to get it sent to you again. Go to: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft and scroll to the bottom of the page. Enter your email address (the one you used for the list) and click on 'Edit Options'. This takes you to your personal list options page. One of the buttons on that page is labeled 'Email my password to me'. Once you have your password, go to the above link and enter it to change your subscription parameters (digest mode, unsub etc.) 73, Eric WA6HHQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)
Can you hear the PSK signals through the KX3 speaker (when you remove the connector from the KX3 headphone jack, of course)? If so, then likely it is a problem with the audio levels or with the sound card setup on the PC. If not, then if you turn the amp off in the KX3 PA mode setting, and switch the amplifier off, do you hear the PSK signals from the speaker? I observed one case at my station where switching the amplifier on would cause the KX3 to go deaf, I suspect due to some corrupt command being sent on the serial line (powering everything off, then disconnecting and reconnecting the cables restored everything to normal). 73, Matt VK2RQ On 21 Mar 2014, at 6:29 am, Julie Royster jsdroys...@nc.rr.com wrote: Hello to the group! Re: [Elecraft] Digimodes what am I missing?
There is a lot of activity on PSK31 mode using canned macros as you describe, and some operators are content with doing only that, however there is a lot more to digimodes than just that. Some people are interested in propagation effects, and may run automated stations such as on PSK31 PropNet or WSPR. Some people are interested to compare the performance of different modulation and coding schemes under various band and propagation conditions. For example, on the new 630m band a lot of the activity involves digital modes or QRSS CW which is decoded through the aid of a computer. Some are interested in using digimodes to support emergency communications. Some use them to track each other on trips in the outback, or to track balloons. Some use them to experiment with network protocols. The list goes on... this broad range of interests is what makes a hobby like ham radio so interesting. 73, Matt VK2RQ. [Elecraft] N1MM/K3/KX3 Programming
Through N1MM and K3 software commands, I am able to send keying messages of specific text from n1mm to the K3. In order to pass variables, such as the other station and serial number, I need help to figure that out. winkeyer command example to send cq from N1MM: F1 RUN CQ,*cq {CQ MYCALL} {MYCALL} TEST* K3 Command sent to K3 on com1 from N1MM: F1 Run CQ,* {CATA1ASC ky cq na1dx na1dx test;}* What I need to do is send the variable {TX} which is the station to work WinKeyer Example: F5 His Call,*{TX} ! de {MYCALL} {SENTRST} {EXCH} {EXCH} {MYCALL} TU k {RX}* F5 His Call,* {CATA1ASC KY **{TX} ! **de {MYCALL} {SENTRST} {EXCH} {EXCH} {MYCALL} TU k {RX};* Is there a way you can escape from literal text to allow N1MM to pass text from the variable {TX} and {EXCHANGE} as an example? In my prior life doing programming with some weird languages, I remember putting like an or other special character to say don't use the following text literally but capture the values out of a variable. If you could, then you would not need a winkeyer or PSK/FSK/AFSK RTTY sending device ever connected to the KX3/K3 for those modes. You could use a sound card to assist in decoding or do like NaP3 does and capture the output of the built in decoder. 73, -- Doug Ellmore, Sr. d...@ellmore.net / www.ellmore.net/na1dx Amateur Radio Operator: NA1DX / P40DE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K2dsp
Well I changed out firmware in k2dsp. Still have to put it in bypass to hear any audio. In the manual pg40 dc voltage chart for U1-5 I get 5v instead of 0. U1-14 I get 0v instead of 5v. I dont have noise blanker or ssb options. But all otger conditions met. Also D3 C is 5v not 0v called for but in schematic D3 is going to U1-3 which is supposed to be 5v. Not sure if that was a typo. All other voltages were right. Removing R19 allows dsp to work but with ungodly popping noise the mute circuit is supposed to stop. I've replaced firmware all diodes and transistors. Clock functions fine leds comes on goes off auxbus sees firmware controls work when u have r 19 removed. Reheated all solder pads. Re: [Elecraft] N1MM/K3/KX3 Programming
This question would more properly have been sent to the N1MM Logger user group. Be that as it may, the answer is yes, at least in CW mode, provided you use the correct N1MM Logger command syntax (see the online documentation). With a Winkeyer or serial or parallel port CW keying, or (in the case of the K3) with CW keying on DTR of the radio control port (this is not available with the KX3), the function key command to send the other station's call sign followed by 5NN, the rest of the contest exchange and your own call sign would be: F2 Ex,{CALL} 5NN {EXCH} {MYCALL} If you want to do this using the K3/KX3's internal keyer, the corresponding function key command would be: F2 Ex,{CAT1ASC KY {CALL} 5NN {EXCH} {MYCALL};} The space between the KY and the first character in the actual message is required by the K3/KX3 command syntax, as is the semicolon at the end of the message. There are several limitations to this method: 1. Once the function key containing one of these messages has been pressed, you cannot interrupt the message from N1MM Logger, i.e. pressing the Esc key will have no effect. You can only interrupt a message in progress by pressing the XMIT button on the radio's front panel. 2. The CW speed using this method is controlled from the radio's front panel SPEED control, not from N1MM Logger. N1MM Logger's CW speed control macros and the PgUp/PgDn keys will not work with this method. 3. If you like to use auto CQ repeat in N1MM Logger, the repeat interval has to be longer than the duration of your CQ message at the slowest CW speed you use. If you change CW speeds, a repeat interval that is appropriate for the slowest CW speed will likely be longer than you would like at higher speeds. 4. The maximum number of characters that can be sent in such a message is 24. Note that this is the number of Morse code characters the message is converted to, not a count of the number of characters in the N1MM Logger command. Therefore you need to design your messages so that they will take no more than 24 characters with the longest call sign and exchange you are likely to need during the contest. 5. You can only put one of these CAT1ASC macro commands in each function key message. 6. You cannot send ad lib Morse code this way, i.e. the Ctrl+K command to send keyboard CW does not work with this method. There may be other limitations; these are the ones that occur to me offhand. I have tested this in CW and verified that it works. It will not work in AFSK A; I am not sure whether it will work in FSK D. 73, Rich VE3KI NA1DX wrote: Through N1MM and K3 software commands, I am able to send keying messages of specific text from n1mm to the K3.
