Re: [Elecraft] Digimodes what am I missing?
Well some great comments, it just shows what a diverse bunch of geeks we really are! To me a Radio Amateur is and always will be proficient in CW to some degree, it's part of our history. For me 100% copy using sophisticated error correcting Digimodes does not turn me on... quite the opposite. Fun modes to get going but interest soon wanes. Also I don't like to listen to S9+ noise crushing CW, I actually like to hear the band noise. What does it for me is having the skill together with the superb receivers and equipment of today to dig out the weakest discernible signal and decode it in my head. Elecraft has for me put the real FUN back into Ham radio beginning with the K2 way back. I still have mine but now also the full K Line which I greatly appreciate. The highly configurable Elecraft gear together with continuous updates and enhancements is what keeps me hooked. I like tinkering, if it was switch on and forget it would soon become boring to me. Also I can and have, repaired and modified my Elecraft gear as needed, with excellent support always on hand. I should also state that the thrill of real Wireless communication is at the heart of Ham radio for me, HF of course via the ionosphere. To imagine the Op at the other end sending a single dit on a hand key and it arrives almost instantaneously in my receiver is still the magic of Wireless. Of course I appreciate all the wonderful programs that have been developed and the internet access we enjoy today, I use it all, it enhances my Ham radio but never replaces it. If I ever want 100% copy there are a plethora of chat methods available all dependent on that invisible infrastructure of course... 73 et ZUT, F5VJC :) On 21 March 2014 22:28, mcduf...@ag0n.net wrote: On Fri, 21 Mar 2014 16:54:32 +0100, F5vjc wrote: Hi Walter, yes I agree Nice job of trimming - NOT! :) Gary __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to foxfive@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Digimodes what am I missing?
Not going to try to convince anyone that likes CW that digital is better. But it offers something different. I first started with psk-31 back a decade ago, then added JT44, then JT65 and other of the WSJT suite of digital programs mainly for eme with QRP transmit power (150w). I recently started playing on 80m with MT63, THOR22, and Olivia from the list on FLdigi so that I can take part in a state-wide emergency drill in remembrance of the 1964 Alaska Earthquake (50th anniversary on March 27). This was the second strongest earthquake in history (9.2) which lasted nearly 5-minutes and killed 130 people. For emergency messages text is best since there is less chance of error in relaying. Also you end up with a printed message that is easy to read. FLmsg has several of the ICS standard forms so really well suited for emcomm. you can compose the message on a form and just send the message (file). Also for a hearing impaired person it is much less stressful to use. I have been practising with 12w to an inverted-V with good signals. Ideal when the power company is broken and you only have a battery and maybe a hunk of wire. Next I will have to install a good RTTY program. 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com Kits made by KL7UW Dubus Mag business: dubus...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Power loss using new KXPA100
Was using my KX3 with a RM Italy amp and a LDG tuner but it never seemed to work well so bought the KXPA100 with tuner.Just got it in the other day and hooked it up with the adapter cable and made the adjustments on the KX3 menu. Everything was going great for the last couple of days, made lots of new contacts. Last night while in the middle of giving my information to a contact in Poland on 10 it was like someone shut the power off in both directions. It was hard to hear the contact which had been booming, and I put nothing out. Looked at my panel and it said 'ant err' which I thought was strange since I had tuned and SWR was great prior to the contact. Now when I try to make any transmission on any band the power meter on the KXPA100 just shows 25 w out (or swr fault) yet the swr on the kx3 and KXPA100 is showing tuned yet nothing is going out.I have a windom 160 dipole antenna up about 45 feet. I won't be able to try any solutions till later this afte rnoon when I get back home but hoping this is just some setting that is off vs something having burned out in the KXPA100. Will check my email later for help with this. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Clicking
The relay bypasses the P3's preamp when the signal level starts to overload the front end. On 40 meters strong SW broadcast signals (that you can't see on the screen) can cause that to happen. Re: [Elecraft] Digimodes what am I missing?
All you say rings true. I've never been a fan of the error-correcting modes because they tend to slow things down; my digi mode of choice is PSK31. The diversity of the hobby is one of its marvels and accounts for me to its staying power: Some years I operate more and some years I build more, and sometimes CW is great fun and sometimes not, Right now I'm building my second KX1 (the first was in 2003) and enjoying it immensely -- though it does occupy me operating position for a while. Elecraft has really contributed to the hobby. At the beginning of the century my K2 outperformed most commercial rigs, and 15 years later my K3 and KX3 do the same. And they -- Wayne, Eric, and Company -- show no signs of slowing down :-) 73, Phil w7ox On 3/21/14, 11:47 PM, F5vjc wrote: Well some great comments, it just shows what a diverse bunch of geeks we really are! Re: [Elecraft] P3 Clicking
John, Maybe it's -110 dBm average noise, but with -20 dBm static crashes? Normally you would see these as broad lighter areas on the waterfall, short duration. You may also have a noise source that's peaking high, but outside of the P3's visible span range. If it's anywhere near 40m, the P3 would still pick it up and it might cause the detector to disable the preamp. I've had this happen with SWBC signals on voice peaks. This (or some similar cause) could explain why you have this happening only on 40m. 73, matt W6NIA On Sat, 22 Mar 2014 07:04:59 -0700 (PDT), you wrote: On further investigation it appears to only happen on 40 meters and I discovered I had the preamp on. We met the Radio Merit Badge on-the-air requirement with a K3/KPA500 to a Carolina Windom at 35 feet.//We put together our own power point presentation and drafted three of our buddies to help the boys with their worksheets and drawings. If you include the words Boy Scouts in your CQ you will have no problem receiving a reply. Our first contact was with Poland and our second and third contacts were with middle-aged Eagle Scouts -- a heart surgeon on his 30-minute lunch hour, and a former troop Scout Master on an island off the east coast. We found seventeen meters open and less crowded than twenty, and being a WARC band it was immune from contesting. 100 watts will, of course, work, but 500 watts works better. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3: Dual Watch or Split - newbie Dave needs help!
Hi Dave - When I'm trying to get a DX station that is working split or during the QRP Fox hunts, I use Dual Watch and Split together. Before engaging, I tune in the target station to suit my hearing pitch preference, then I press A--B twice to get both VFO's equal. Next I hit Split and then Dual Watch. Using the small tuning knob, I tune VFO-B up to a point where I want to transmit - either on the frequency of the guy currently being worked, or into a hole where there are few strong signals present. I can hear the DX / Fox station in my left headphone and the pack in the right ear. I also use NaP3 as a visual display to actually see where the pack is operating - helps a lot! Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3: Dual Watch or Split - newbie Dave needs help!
Dave, I don't know how you are hearing both VFO frequencies at the same time with only SPLIT engaged (unless you have Dual Watch turned on at the same time). With split (and not Dual Watch), you have VFO A in both ears. If you use the REV button, you can hear on the VFO B frequency (again in both ears). You do not hear both at once. You can swap the VFOs with the A/B button. Without SPLIT, transmit will be on VFO A, but with SPLIT turned on, transmit will be on VFO B - observe the direction the arrow is pointing on the display to see which VFO will be used for transmit. If you turn on Dual Watch, you will hear both VFOs as long as they are not separated by more than +/- 15 kHz. You may or may not want to use SPLIT in conjunction with Dual Watch - usually you would want to use SPLIT, but not necessarily - say you want to use VFO B to scour around the band area while carrying on a non-split QSO on the VFO A frequency. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/22/2014 2:02 PM, Esquer Dave wrote: Hello folks, Newbie Dave, K6WDE/KH6 with my Elecraft KX3. I am still confused though. As I understand it, for: SPLIT Split has a wider range of frequencies to utilize beyond the +/- 15kHz limitation of Dual Watch. VFO A (DX station) on the left and VFO B (calling station, me) on the right headphone. DUAL WATCH VFO A (DX station) on the right and VFO B (me) on the left headphone. Easier to tune up and down with the big tuning knob as I try to catch the DX station (instead of the little tuning knob). I must be missing something. I’ve used Split quite successfully and tried Dual Watch but they just seem to be the reverse of each other. [Elecraft] OT: Boy Scouts looking for first QSO
Many thanks to all the Elecrafters who answered the boys' calls this morning. They successfully completed their very first QSOs with hams in New York , Massachusetts, Mississippi, Arkansas and Montana. One of the Scouts, Zach, then declared that he wanted to work some DX! (Yes, he really picked up the jargon that quickly...) So I switched the radio to 15 Meters, and Zach began calling CQ DX. Within just a couple of minutes, Zach had worked EI4HDB and an F1 station. He even tried out some of the French he has been learning in school. He was thrilled! I always enjoy watching youngsters experience the magic of shortwave for the first time. It's a memory they'll keep for a lifetime. 73, Mark AI4BJ On 3/21/2014 9:00 PM, Mark Volstad wrote: I am acting as counselor for a group of Scouts from the tri-state area (KY/OH/IN) who wish to earn their Radio merit badge. Quick question..Can a KX3 control a K3?? On 3/19/2014 3:24 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: As you may already know, any K3 can control another one at a remote location. This allows you to have the experience of operating the radio, while taking advantage of great station locations with larger antenna arrays and other features. Many K3 users operate this way exclusively, which is why we offer a cost-reduced K3, the K3/0. The K3/0 is the same size as the K3, but with all of the RF modules removed. Now you have another choice: the K3/0-Mini. The Mini consists of a K3 front panel, only, so it's highly portable. When combined with a RemoteRig interface, the K3/0-Mini becomes a virtual K3 station you can take anywhere. The mini is perfect for home and travel use due to its small size. It fully duplicates all K3 controls, displays and menus for a realistic remote K3 experience. The Mini has other features not found on the K3/0, including: * Simplified RemoteRig Interfacing Use a single RemoteRig interface cable for connecting the RemoteRig to your K3/0 Mini. This cable contains all IO connections from the RemoteRig (SP, MIC, PTT, PAD, KEY, RXd, TXd). * More Connectors Paddle, PTT and KEY inputs are now available both on the K3/0 Mini and RemoteRig. 3.5-mm audio connections on the side connect to your headset without the use of adapters. * Built-in Stereo Speakers A pair of internal speakers powered by their own audio amplifier for stereo (main/sub RX) audio. * USB Port for firmware loading and/or software-based remote-control solutions For further information, see: http://www.elecraft.com/K3-Remote/k3_remote.htm The price of the K3/0-mini is $699.95, with first shipments in about 3 weeks. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to garyk...@wi.rr.com -- 73, Gary K9GS Greater Milwaukee DX Association: http://www.gmdxa.org Society of Midwest Contesters: http://www.w9smc.com CW Ops #1032 http://www.cwops.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Yes, Great Congrats to you, Sean! I always remember my first QSO as well. The other station had the letter X in the callsign, and the way I discovered that I did not really know the letter in CW was that I had to write the _.._ on paper and look it up afterward. Re: [Elecraft] First QSO!
Same here, Fred -- In August 1953 on 80 CW with my (necessarily rock-bound) 6AG7-6L6 transmitter and a SWBC table model receiver with BFO added. My first was 3 miles away and we went to the same high school (of 2500) and had never met, but became close friends. Such things were really magical, before the days of cell phones and such. But I guess that *first* QSO is still exciting today! Plus the hobby is so much more varied today. All good :-) And, congratulations, Sean. You're into a marvelous hobby, one which will bring you much satisfaction, and the occasional frustration ;-) 73, Phil w7ox On 3/22/14, 6:08 PM, Fred Jensen wrote: Congratulations Sean! Sean, for 99.99% of hams, there really are no knuckleheads. Your call gives you away, at least to me and I think many, as a new ham and there's really nothing you can do that is going give us any heartburn whatsoever. We do have our yahoo's, thankfully they're a very small minority, and if you ever hear one, ignore him [guaranteed he'll be male], avoid 75m at night. :-) If you try a contest, and you get the exchange wrong, it won't matter, you'll get help. Re: [Elecraft] Digimodes what am I missing?
KSM is staffed by volunteers. I respect their skill and dedication, but professionals are paid. I expect these operators are retired professionals or former professionals. Morse is no longer a career path. Even the military has dropped Morse interception as a recognized skill. On the other hand, an architectural blacksmith can make a good living. Power supplies are necessary, but not interesting. That is a solved problem. On the other hand, there is some cool stuff happening in power transmission, like the DC projects in Germany. And responding to another message, ARQ is error-detecting, not error-correcting, but if you want to include that, then Morse was obsoleted as the state of the art in the 1950's rather than the 1960's. One of the purposes of the amateur service is advancing skills in both the communication and technical phases of the art. I'm interested in advancing the technical stuff. wunder K6WRU On Mar 22, 2014, at 5:18 PM, Phil Kane k2...@kanafi.org wrote: On 3/21/2014 8:39 AM, Walter Underwood wrote: CW is neat as a hobby technology, but commercially, it is less relevant than blacksmithing. You can filter by band, and New DXCC's, worked, confirmed and verified. The software is in beta and would appreciate any comments or suggestions for the future release. You can download it at: http://va2fsq.com/?page_id=987 When the beta is complete, In next release version of Win4K3Suite will have this integrated in the application and will allow point and click QSY's to the spots as well as showing the spots on the spectrum peaks or waterfall in the panadapters. Re: [Elecraft] First QSO!
May I add another congratulations, Sean! I think we all remember our first QSO. Mine was in 1960. My call was WV2LBV back then. The rig was my first build from the ARRL Handbook (6146 osc/amp) and of course since I was a rank novice it was rock bound. I had a very used Hallicrafters SX-99 for a receiver and a trap dipole wrapped around the outside of the 4th floor of the apartment building we lived in. My first contact was in the Dakotas (memory fails so I don't remember whether it was north or south). I was nervous as all get out...knees knocking, key stuttering! I also discovered that if I didn't sit still my body would warp the crystal frequency by capacitive coupling (very early FM). No, I don't think any ham forgets that very first QSO. Re: [Elecraft] First QSO!
Sean, If you are interested in the W1AW QSO party for the centennial year, follow this link: http://www.arrl.org/centennial-qso-party The simple rules are to get all states but there are variations on modes and so on. There is a schedule for the full year where you can see which states will be having W1AW stations operating. It is located on the ARRL web site and you can probably find it from the link I included above. This is a very casual contest but the trick is finding the different stations. They are on multiple bands, operating with multiple modes although I am 100 percent CW on these. 73, phil, K7PEH On Mar 22, 2014, at 7:00 PM, Sean Wall seancw...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Phil, It was on SSB, and yes, I was definitely nervous.
