[Elecraft] Px3 or KPA100?

2014-05-10 Thread HREFAB
Ok, so if you were in the market for a new piece of Elecraft Technology (and
who isn't?) what would you get? A KXPA100 amp or the new PX3 Panadapter?
I've got my order in for hte Panadapter , but I'm wondering if I should
throw a few more dollars on it and get the amp. This way I could sell my
IC7000, and My Ft817 and clear up my desk and still have 100 watts available
for those nights when QRP just isn't cutting it. As it stands now, I would
like to be all Elecraft for a number of reasons, not the least of which is
the superior (in my experience) capabilities of the Radio. Sure, eventually,
I'll get both, but what would you guys opt for initially?

If you chose the Amp, would you get the internal Antenna tuner or use the
tuner in the KX3?

[Elecraft] Px3 or KPA100?

2014-05-10 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Jim,

If you are not definitely going for 100w and also want to do some kit building
(firing up your soldering iron), Hardrock 50 small linear amplifier could be
another alternative.  It will soon have an internal ATU inside the amplifier as
well.  More information will be given in http://www.hobbypcb.com/

They will also have a booth in Dayton.  If you visit Elecraft in Dayton, you
may wish to visit them as well.

Jim,
The KX3's internal tuner will not do anything while you are using the
KXPA100. The tuner is bypassed when the amp is in use. For an antenna
tuner to do it's job, it must be positioned between the final amplifier
and the antenna feedline. Or, (even better) at the feed point of the antenna
itself. Therefore, the internal tuner of the KX3 is only in use when running
the KX3 barefoot.

By my audio stuff i mean a mic.
 I'm using a Shure SM58, into a mic preamp, into a
gate/compressor/limiter/de-esser into an EQ into a mixer into the K3's
 line-in.

 Hi Slava,

A de-esser works in the 6-8 kHz range, and you need it in a studio,
especially with mics like the SM58 that are sibilant, it's totally useless
for ham radio. If you want to use an SM58, you can run it straight into the
front panel mic input with a suitable adapter -- pin 2 of the XLR is hot, pin
3 and pin 1 get tied together and go to the connector shell. The K3 has
excellent EQ and compression built in, so you've got a lot of stuff there
 that you don't need.

The SM58 is an singer's vocal mic, it has proximity effect, which adds a lot
of bass that must be equalized out. Pro mics are overkill for ham radio (in
terms of cost), but if you want to use one, go for one of the EV variable-D
 mics -- RE10, 11, 15, 16, 18. No proximity effect, no sibilance.

Another issue with trying to use a pro mic in ham radio is that ham mics have
presence peaks around 3 kHz to compensate for the rolloff of the crystal
filter, so you must add that with an equalizer. The TXEQ in the K3 works VERY
well for that. Before W6XU turned me onto the Yahama CM500 headset, I was
using an RE16 from my stash of recording mics, on an AKG boom. Worked fine, I
got great reports, but the CM500 is $60, and sounds great too.

So line-in is taken. I can't put a Y cable there because, correct me if i'm
wrong, every time Signalink would key up - the mic would go live.
So that's not an option for me.
I think its a lot easier to just hit a couple of buttons and switch to the
front panel mic for digital work, isn't it?
And the rear mic won't go live either.

As far as audio interface goes, yes, i have an E-mu 0404 USB that i can use.
But signalink works just fine. No drivers to install. And it has just enough
 controls.
If you're happy with it, use the Line In. But remember that it has a Pin One
Problem, so you could run into RFI with it.

I really don't see why i would need a studio quality sound card for PSK31.

See my exchange with N7WS about that in this thread -- a better sound card
can improve linearity at the bottom of the dynamic range. In fact, you need a
decent USB sound card a LOT more than all that outboard gear. The 0404 is
overkill, although nice if you want to feed a spectrum display using NaP3.
The Signal Link may be good enough -- the cheap Numark and somewhat nicer
 Tascam certainly are.

I use the CM500 plugged into the rear panel mic and headphone jacks, assign
the Headphones + Speaker toggle to one of the PF keys. That lets you use
the K3's excellent audio processing, get rid of all that outboard gear, and
makes it very easy to switch from SSB to digital modes.

Re: [Elecraft] Making a Signalink cable for the K3's 8-pin mic

2014-05-10 Thread Bruce Beford
With all due respect, you already received the answer here. Yes, you can
connect the Signal Link to the front panel mic connector. Just pad the audio
output of the SL to a mic level, instead of line level. Also, you won't be
able to get audio output from the K3 back to the SignalLink via that jack.
The RX audio of the K3 is not available there (see the manual). So you would
need another cable from line out on the back for that anyway.

So... it would be easist to just patch it in via the back (via your rack of
signal shaping/mixing gear), as has been suggested.

Re: [Elecraft] Px3 or KPA100?

2014-05-10 Thread HREFAB
Thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware that the internal KX3 tuner couldn't
be used so thanks for clearing that up.
I use my kx3 99% of the time from my office. Not much for hauling it out to
the seashore or mountain tops. Additionally, the extra $300.00 puts a cramp
in my plan. Another couple of hundred I could swing, but opening up that
$1000.00 door puts it above my pay grade for now. I'm sure that I'll get
some sort of amplification for the KX3 when I just can't got out over the
noise, but for flying a desk, I guess teh PX3 will be the sensible
alternative for now.

And yes, my KX3 Hears FAR better than my IC7000. On the whole, I really
found that to be a disappointing radio. It has a lot of bells and whistles,
but other than the 100Watts, the KX3 blows it out of the water (for me
anyway).

[Elecraft] KX3 won't stop scanning-- help!

2014-05-10 Thread Julie Royster
Hello out there! My husband Larry's KX3 has gotten stuck scanning on all
bands when in any mode except Data A for PSK.
He never intentionally started a scan - not sure how this happened.
Howard at Elecraft suggested reinstalling the original factory config file,
which I did, but it did not help.
The manual says to press any button to stop scanning, but no luck.
Ideas, anybody?
Larry would like to try using RTTY but cannot until we get this scan thing
to stop.

[Elecraft] [K3] Installation of KBF3 and KFL3A-6K was easy.

2014-05-10 Thread Larry Lopez
This is just in case someone out there has misplaced trepidation.
Installation KBPF3 and KFL3A-6K was easy.
It took an hour making believe it was brain surgery.

In a pinch you can get a wrist strap (or even a static mat)
at radio shack.
You want good screwdrivers.
Read the instructions.

[Elecraft] KX3 - EEINIT - Calibration Information

2014-05-10 Thread David Patino

Does performing an EEINIT on the KX3 erase calibration information, mainly the
Receive Sideband calibration for use with the roofing filter?

In the documentation it recommends writing down the settings when you do it
yourself for future reference, but by any chance does the factory keep records
of these when they do the calibration on assembled units?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - EEINIT - Calibration Information

2014-05-10 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Yes, an EEINIT will erase all the calibration information. This is why you
should make backups of your KX3 configuration using the KX3 Utility.

If you didn't do this, then if you contact Elecraft support and quote your KX3
serial number, they may be able to send you a configuration backup done at the
factory.

Re: [Elecraft] A K2 Question

It works fine for portable operation. I usually take my K1 camping a
couple times a month during the warmer seasons, but occasionally take
the K2/10. The front panel of the K2 is very close to the same size as
the KX3. In fact, if you remove the K2 front panel assembly, THAT is
almost exactly the same size as a KX3 (though it is useless that way).

K2 is a very versatile rig, and actually pretty small as ham

Re: [Elecraft] Making a Signalink cable for the K3's 8-pin mic

Slava,

Yes, that would most likely work - BUT -

I would suggest that you move the input from your audio gear from Line
In to Mic In and use the Line In for the Signalink. Surely you have an
output level adjustment for your audio gear that will allow mic level
output - if not, add an attenuator.

That would allow you to select Line In as the MIC SEL fo data modes.
and either FP or RP mic for SSB which is the more normal setup for audio.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] HRD/DM80 and a SignaLink

2014-05-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jack,

Another possibility is that you have DM780 set to supply PTT via HRD and
HRD is issuing a CAT command to the KX3 to go into transmit. If the
Signalink PTT is also used, things can become confused.

There are several other possibilities such as VOX being on and set to a
value that is staying set on from whatever low level noise is on the mic
cable from the SL.

Good Weekend All,

Don't have easy access to search the archives, so at risk of a dup,
here is a finding from setting up the KX3, SignaLink with the KX3
Tigertronics made cables, and DM780. HRD works flawlessly with
Elecraft KXUSB here, but...

Using the little paper instruction insert that came with the SL to KX3
cables from Tigertronics, it was implied that the KX3 menu entry for
MicBtn was to be in PTT Up.Dn. Well, that is apparently backwards. The
system behaves normally if Mic Btn is OFF, and when set as instructed
in the little sheet, the outgoing data string is transmitted in your
selected mode, then the SL unkeys (as it should), but the KX3 stays in
transmit.

When the KX3 is set as the TigerTronic folks suggest, I assume the SL
vox relay was being overruled by the TX command by KXUSB control
because tapping the XMIT button on the rig would drop the rig back
into receive. With PTT set OFF, the SignaLink VOX circuit has proper
control.

Had me stumped for a minute.. hope this helps someone setting up in
the future.

More generally, I think you will find that all SDR radios generate SSB
by what would be called the phasing method in analogue radios, rather
than the filter method.

[Elecraft] broken receiver, I suspect

2014-05-10 Thread Jeff Stai
I just sent the message below to support, but I suspect they are all
partying in Dayton. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them -
thanks! - jeff wk6i

-- Forwarded message --

hi - I recently lent my K3 #00027 as part of the W1AW/7 multi-op from
Nevada. The environment was not well controlled and I'm pretty sure my
receiver was damaged during a band change.

On the last day of the operation I was calling CQ on 12m and getting no
response. Turns out everyone was calling me but I was hearing almost
nothing.

On my bench I checked it using an XG2. The 50uV setting gave only S3.

I then did a full parameter initialization and then tried to calibrate the
RF gain using the K3 utility. The utility reported that there was not
enough signal to perform the calibration.

I also have an XG1 so I tried that. Same result.

I tried turning the pre-amp on and off, which did cause about a 2 S unit
difference as might be expected. The attenuator also caused an audible
difference but not a useful S meter reading.

One might suspect that I've blown out one or more of those PIN diodes
before the preamp. If I had any laying around I might try a swap, but...;)

Also: I do have the jumper for the extreme signal protection installed.

No, it appears to be on all bands, though I have not checked all bands. I
later experienced the same thing on 17m, and in the lab I tried it on all 3

As far as I know TX is normal. I didn't get any reports of bad TX signal,
just that many stations were calling and I wasn't hearing them.

Ray,

I just started a new Google group titled KX3users. I too don't like the
Yahoo issues I have had over the years. Perhaps this one will help... or
maybe not. Let me know once you have tried.

Replying to self:

Well, actually now, I did find a minor shortcut: If I simply reply, I can
then copy the sender address from the posting... I use text only (no
HTML)... and then remove the list address and replace it with the copied
address, generating a direct reply. Of course, if I have the other person's
address already in my contacts list or if I have emailed before, the client
will find the address after typing a few characters.

Anyway c'est la vie.

HI Gang:

Some of you may have noticed... especially if you use an email client
to view postings as I do... that the sender's email address is now
altered so that if you intend an off-list or direct reply, you cannot
do that by clicking on the sender's address. That is because,
although you can see that address, it has been readjusted to reply
only to the group. You will have to manually type in a direct reply.

I view that as a major inconvenience, and it appears that Yahoo has
fixed something that was not broken again. At this point, it
might be worth considering using some other service (yeah, this one is
free) than Yahoo.

[Elecraft] KX3: popping noise in radio speaker

2014-05-10 Thread Edward R Cole
While on my trip in the lower-48 I installed batteries in my KX3 for
the first time (run it off 13.5v PS in the shack).

I noted that there was a regular popping noise at a regular beat
about once per second. I checked battery voltage and saw that is was
below 12v and dropping slowly. I used eight AA batteries which all
tested at 1.53v before installation - brand new out of the
package. 8x1.53 = 12.24v but there is loading so voltage started at
about 11.9v. I noted current was running about 250ma with radio in
SSB and normal volume level. I guess the radio draws pretty hard in receive.

I removed the batteries and radio runs normal with 13.5vdc
applied. I guess using 2.2v lithium or NiHD batteries would work
better. I do not intend to run with internal batteries but wondered
if anyone else has encountered popping audio and is it voltage
related? Or is this related to the speaker physical fit issue with
early models of the KX3? Mine is SN 475 (kit).

Re: [Elecraft] KX3: popping noise in radio speaker

2014-05-10 Thread Phil Wheeler
I've not noticed any such sounds, Ed, but my
hearing is not exactly reference standard.

I'm using Eneloop NiMH and have the optional
charger so they can stay in the KX3. So far, so
good -- though I'm usually on 13.8 VDC or an
external battery if available.

Re: [Elecraft] broken receiver, I suspect

2014-05-10 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
Jeff,

Do you have the KXV3 (transverter interface) installed? If so, remove
it, and put back the jumper that would have been removed when it was
installed (I think there's just one jumper, but check the installation
manual). There's a PIN diode on there that will blow if it sees more
than about 2W. If you don't have the KXV3, there's another PIN diode
on the main RF board that can be vulnerable. I'll forward you an email
from support when this happened to me a while ago

No, it appears to be on all bands, though I have not checked all bands. I
later experienced the same thing on 17m, and in the lab I tried it on all 3
 bands available on the XG2.

Is Tx normal on 12 m or did it degrade as well?

As far as I know TX is normal. I didn't get any reports of bad TX signal,
just that many stations were calling and I wasn't hearing them.

 Thanks! - jeff wk6i

ps: I should have said I hope they are all partying in Dayton...

On the last day of the operation I was calling CQ on 12m and getting no
response. Turns out everyone was calling me but I was hearing almost
 nothing.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2014-05-10 Thread Kevin

Good Evening,
The clouds are wringing out the last of the precipitation from the
latest storm system in preparation for a week of sunshine. It will be a
shock; the moss was doing so well too :) I'll enjoy having it around
warming everything up.

Speaking of sun it looks like a number of spots are moving into
position to effect us. Lately I've been hearing more storm related
noise than I have auroral or solar wind noise. Hopefully the rain will
spread southward, we really don't need much more here in the Pacific
Northwest. Soon the dry season will let us go out with our portable
rigs. Field Day can be wet and cold or dry and hot, you never can tell
until a few days before.

Please join us tomorrow.

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (6 PM PDT Sunday)

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS
