Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Protection
Hi Jeff, I have done that by comparing BAND DATA signals from both K3s using a 74HC688 8-Bit Comparator. When both BAND DATA signals are equal the P=Q output from the HC688 disables transmitting on both K3s (TXinh). I used the HC688 because I have decimal BAND DATA signals from my band filter. If you want 12V logic or only need 4 Bit (BCD BAND DATA) you can use CMOS 4063 (4-Bit Comparator) as well. This circuit saved K3 frontend several times :-) 73, Win DK9IP Am 01.06.2014 06:04, schrieb Jeff via Elecraft: My station consists of two K-3's, each with a dedicated legal limit amplifier and SteppIr antenna. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Protection
Hello Jeff, I use the Array Solutions AS-RXFEP inline w/ my K3 AUX (2nd rx input). At times the rx antenna is within 20 feet of the tx antenna. Without the protector in place the receiver COR relay was being triggered with as little as 20 watts at times, but with the RXFEP inserted, I could run 500W from the KPA500 without ever engaging the COR. According to the Array Solutions documentation, the input to the receiver is limited to .3v (0dBm), and the internal components of the device can handle 10 watts. I keep the device inline with the 2nd receiver input at all times, regardless of which rx antenna I'm using, and it has worked perfectly (and silently). 73, Dale WA8SRA My station consists of two K-3's, each with a dedicated legal limit amplifier and SteppIr antenna. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Repair Broken Power Pole
I think you'll need to get the back off to get to the APPs. You'll prob have to remove both housings. Use a small screwdriver to lift the contact lip over the spring and pull the housings from the rear. Push new housings on and reassemble the radio. I've never tried to remove two housings together, always had them separated. May be easier to un-solder and re-solder when finished. [Elecraft] [K3] Cutoff for the Next 700 Hz Filter Production Run
The cutoff for getting in on the next batch is 1200 UTC Tuesday June 3rd. Please visit http://www.unpcbs.com/frontdoor/ to submit your paid order by then, to ensure you don't miss out. Note: 1) This batch will arrive in early September. 2) We will only be requesting a handful of extra filters this time, i.e. beyond the number of paid orders we have in hand. As a result, this production run will probably sell out by July. 3) The reason we are requesting so few extra filters, is that we want to squeeze in another production run before the (winter solstice) holiday shopping season. 4) Our long-term plan has that subsequent run arriving the 2nd or 3rd week of November. Most likely it will be the last run of 2014. My approach to this was to use my band decoders to drive a 4P relay and use the relay contacts to drive filters, antenna switching, and an add circuit so if 2 of the relays were on the same band a piezo device that emits a tone as a warning of both radios being on the same band. Connect tip on the amplifier to both tip and sleeve on the headphones for the operator using the main RX and connect ring to tip and ring for the operator using the sub RX. Since the outputs of the headphone amplifier/splitters are generally isolated, one could even make cables with a 1K or 5K pot to create their own balance/mix control. 73, ... While you're in the programming mode, how about some preventative medicine. Prevent one rig from switching to a band that the other rig is on. If it tries, switch back to the old band. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 6/1/2014 11:19 AM, Doug Person via Elecraft wrote: This would be a good place to use an Arduino. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Protection
The simplest get you there now solution is to simply disable complimentary bands in each K3. Set up the left radio for 80-20-10 and the right radio for 160-40-15, for one example. You didn't buy Steppirs to exclude bands on each radio, but this will give you protection now while you pursue one of the other suggestions. (Obviously, avoid using direct frequency entry to change bands...) Also, highly recommend purchasing this book, for the next steps of keeping one radio from bothering the other: http://www.inrad.net/product.php?productid=248 Have fun! 73 jeff wk6i On Sun, Jun 1, 2014 at 9:44 AM, Cady, Fred fc...@ece.montana.edu wrote: Check out a 74LS85 4 bit comparator. A final comment to the issue of keyboard vs mill. I find that the keyboard tactile feel is not as good as a old hard mechanical mill. Albeit you need more pressure to complete the stroke, but it is positive. Something like the feedback sound of the paper being hit. I think mainly because I learned to type on a mill decades ago, hi. But here is one thing I will comment on, when typing at high speed on a teletype machine you can get to the point of going fast enough to actually feel the actuator riding over the cam... Re: [Elecraft] O.T. Learning Morse Code
There can be no greater example of a geek language than APL. I've known a few research scientists that actually used it. Looking at APL code was like looking at something written on another planet by a non-human culture. It was, however, a true first generation language having been initially developed in 1960. Fortunately for us old timers there was Fortran - which the human mind could comprehend. By the end of the 60's, the C language was born, and, as they say, the rest is history. C has become the standard pattern for most of the languages used today. So, as hams with inquisitive minds and a desire to build and create, programming is a wonderful alternative to building hardware, albeit not the least bit less frustrating. But it can be real fun. The Elecraft gear all come with wonderfully thought through programmable command sets which means it doesn't take a whole lot of coding to get a piece of gear to do something for you. Programming is also a good way to light up a few more brain cells and keep the neural pathways from drying up. Also, BTW Fred, APL has neither met its demise or completely disappeared. There are apparently a few ancient algorithms still in use in research. Probably because they still work and nobody has the slightest idea how to translate APL into anything comprehensible. 73, Doug -- K0DXV On 06/01/2014 12:19 PM, Fred Jensen wrote: Of all the programming languages whose demise and disappearance I lament, I lament the demise and disappearance of APL the least. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org On 6/1/2014 8:15 AM, Doug Person via Elecraft wrote: I'm surprised to learn that there is at least one other living human being that knows what an APL golfball is. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to k0...@aol.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 Hi PA current ?
Glenn, What was the DC voltage at 100 watts keydown? It should be 12 volts or greater - more is better, 13+ is good. If the voltage drops, the current will increase (and I believe the efficiency decreases) to maintain your 100 watt output level. More current, more heat. An off center fed antenna may present a reasonable SWR, but SWR does not tell the whole tale. OCF antennas are infamous for RF-in-the-shack problems, so you might have some RF floating around to create 'strange happenings'. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/1/2014 1:06 AM, WA7SPY wrote: I have had my KXPA100 for 5 months or so now. [Elecraft] KAT500 Firmware Revisions for MAC OS X
The current firmware version for the KAT500 is apparently MCU 1.67. To access it requires the KAT500 Utility version 14.2.20. That, however, seems to be available only for Windows. The latest utility version for Mac OS X on the website is 1.14.2.1. When I run that, the latest firmware version it finds is 1.41. Unfortunately 1.41 seems not to give the KAT500 the capability of tracking the frequency setting from the K3 as it tunes - with F/W 1.41 retunes only on the first dit. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to get 1.67 using a Mac (short of installing Windows on the Mac)? Thanks for whatever advice might be offered . . . [Elecraft] Looking for a K3 Remote Station in Asia and/or Oceania
Hey Gang, I thought it would be interesting to have some Remote stations available at the WRTC HQ station at WRTC 2014 this year. This will allow all those folks who are coming, but who are not competitors, to take part in the IARU fun. It will also provide an additional set of logs for the immediate log check. Their will be the WR1TC demo station at the HQ, which will be a FB New England station. However, I thought it would be really cool to have some Remote stations active at HQ as well. I started by locating a couple of New England stations that can be operated remotely. But, after talking with some friends, I found out their was interest from stations around the world. Right now, I have interest from two Multi-Single stations, where the remote at WRTC HQ will be one of the operating positions in these stations. I have a station in EU, and one in SA. Of course, would be a total blast to have a stations from Asia and Oceania represented. If you have access to, or know someone who has a station in Asia or Oceania which has a K3 than can be remoted, and would be interested in doing this, please get in touch with me directly. All the stations we are going to set up will be using Microbit RemoteRig RRC units; the remote station could be a single op, or any type of Multi. We can make it work. We will have plenty of internet bandwidth, prefer N1MM for logging and will work with you to set things up long before IARU. 73, Gerry Hull, W1VE ge...@w1ve.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Ted, I have a Mac, I have a KAT500, and I have MCU 1.67 installed on my KAT500 and I am using the KAT500 Utility program version 1.14.2.1. Everything works hunky dory. Now, I am not sure why the Elecraft web page suggests 1.14.2.20 except for the fact that it does denote the latest Windows release. The difference between the .1 and .20 at the end of the Windows versus Mac releases may refer to a build number which is a common thing to include in the version identification (having been a programmer for almost 50 years). So, these different numbers may mean different builds which is not unusual since I think the software for the Windows versus the Mac (and Linux) are done by two different people -- or, at least it used to be two different people. And, their build cycles could easily be different (and likely to be different). But, from my experience you can load 1.14.2.1 utility and use that to load up MCU 1.67. 73, phil, K7PEH On Jun 1, 2014, at 3:28 PM, Dauer, Edward eda...@law.du.edu wrote: The current firmware version for the KAT500 is apparently MCU 1.67. [Elecraft] K3: simple headphone splitter
A very elegant solution that seems to have become a defacto standard here in Tampa is the Behringer HA400 headset amp. Several years ago I purchased one for our local club, ther are now 4 there, plus it has also migrated to the St Petersburg radio club. Simply plug a stereo mini plug into the K3 headphone or line out jack (NOT into the speaker out jack) and plug the othe side of it into a mini plug to stereo quarter inch plug into the input jack on the HA400. Plug the HA400 wall wart into the power socket (or, if portable, two 9 volt batteries in parallel give 30-40 hours of operation) and plug up to 4 headsets into the HA400. Best of all, each headset has its own volume control on the HA400. You can even feed a audio recorder to record both sides of the conversation if you turn monitor on in the K3. I have used this headset mixer in my home station, in the club and even at high power Multi-Multi environments with a dozen kilowatt amps and never had any RFI. $20 at any Guitar Center or on Amazon. I've no pecuniary interest in the device, just that it works and works and works. 73 Lu Romero W4LT (currently /YO2) I'm using an IPad. All KAT500 Utilities versions for Windows, Mac and Linux should be able to fetch and install current firmware. Try clicking Copy Files from Elecraft, and it should get the current production firmware from our FTP server to your local computer file system. If it does not, you can use your web browser to copy files from ftp://ftp.elecraft.com and navigate to KAT500/firmware. Once you have the files in a folder on your local computer, use the KAT500 utility firmware tab browse button to move to that folder location. New KAT500 utility versions add dialogs for new firmware functions. [Elecraft] MAC Utility for KAT500
Thanks, Phil, and all others who replied. Borrowing a Windows laptop wasn¹t easy but it worked; after which I went back at it with the Mac. At that point the OS X - based Utility recognized MCU 1.67, which was of course resident in the KAT-500 by then, courtesy of Windows. I have no explanation for why it failed the first N times. Probably operator error. Or a quantum tunnel into a previous time. In any case, it¹s nice to have the reflector and friends when you need it. Tnx, Ted, KN1CBR Ted, I have a Mac, I have a KAT500, and I have MCU 1.67 installed on my KAT500 and I am using the KAT500 Utility program version 1.14.2.1. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna choices
Well, I've only been licensed since 1958 and although I was using CW and SSB in the early 60s on 2M and working MS and EME in the 70s, I too never set foot on 6-meters until 2009. On Field Day (operating from home) I tried the K3 on six. Of course, it's stone deaf so I cobbled up a preamp from an old broadband Avantek amplifier, and hooked up my 40/80 meter wire dipole, fed with almost 200' of RG8. The coax loss was my matching network since I don't have the ATU. There was a local yokel club operating from a nearby mountain cluttering up 50.125 and there was some Es ongoing. I tuned around a bit and heard a CW CQ on 50.123 under the splatter from the local on SSB. It was Jl8GFB. I called and worked him at 0014Z. At 0122Z I heard another CQ on 50.096 and worked JA7WSZ. So the band was open to JA for more than an hour. I worked 43 stations and never heard another station work the JAs. The failure occurred when I tried plugging in the DC power connector and missed by one position, so that the red 12V hot lead plugged into the black jack, partially melting it. Thanks for all the detailed suggestions. The solution was to remove the top panel, then the side panel. That gave me access to the jack, but when I removed it, the #14 wire soldered to the PCB came with it. To solder a new wire to the board, I needed access to the bottom side of the board -- my Hakko from the top side wasn't cutting it. So I removed most of the screws holding that bottom corner spacer, swiveled it out of the way of the iron, loosened several screws holding the bottom cover and propped it open with pliers so I could see that under-side solder pad. That let me make a good joint. Everything is all better now. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 fan noise
Am I missing something here or is this normal? Sounds normal for mine. I've recently had mine on 52.525 in an FM QSO. I ended up at about 250W with short transmissions. That didn't surprise me much at all, because my KPA seems to produce quite a bit of heat on six meters anyway. Hit the dummy load and do some continuous carrier testing and see how long it takes to hit high speed. It won't take long. That's one screaming fan. By the way, you can sample those speeds just by going to the menu and changing the fan control setting. That menu item sets the minimum speed the fan will run (auto = off when below threshold). One thing you might try is to set the fan to the first or second speed (not auto) when you're operating those modes. That let's the fan run all the time at the speed you set, which allows it to cool in receive mode when it might normally kick down to the off mode until you key the next time. Don't miss understand, the fan control menu sets the MINIMUM speed the fan runs. It still kicks up faster for warmer operation. I've been having fun and some success with a 5 band hex beam. It's only at 20 ft and 50 ft would be much better. Its SWR is less than 1.5:1 on each band 20-10m. There is an option to add 6 m for little or no cost. It's only 2 elements so it doesn't have a lot of fwd gain (9-10 dBi) but good f/b of 20 dB. Not too expensive if you HB it. The filter option is a bit of a pain to add later due to the calibration procedure -- done by Elecraft even for kits if the filter is purchased with the basic KX3. Re: [Elecraft] O.T. Learning Morse Code
One can probably find an electric typewriter, but that is not a Mill. A Mill is a manual typewriter that has no shift. It is not good for typing and all the ones that I have seen were manufactured in the forties. Mills are not very useful for anything except copying code. I had to learn to copy with cursive to get the extra back when you had to get a minute perfect copy for the examiner. I am still working on head copy but for some reason I have to hold a pencil and make marks that even I can't read most of the words to copy. Finding a mill that works well is a challenge these days. The ships that I have worked on have several mills sitting around frozen up, but none that work well. I don't think there are any typewriter repairmen left around to rework a mill. I think it's that recall ... step that breaks the continuous copying process, it requires thinking, and if you learned on a mill, or have used a mill a lot, you're not used to doing any thinking. When I was at the coastal marine station so many years ago, my mind would wander while in traffic with a ship ... OK, I was 16, 16-yr old minds wander a lot. :-) But, it's just evidence that I wasn't thinking about what I was copying Copying on a mill, and to a large extent on a keyboard, I have no idea what I copied when I'm done, without reading it, it's muscle-memory and it did not go through my alleged brain. I'm not a musician, but my brother is [however, he makes his living writing software :-)] and he tells me playing the piano is basically muscle memory ... see notesmove fingers. It goes a bit beyond that however, there is a distinct difference between a mill and a computer keyboard for most. I can type faster [from hard copy text] on a desktop keyboard than I can on a mill. However, I can copy Morse [groups or text] faster on a mill than than that same keyboard. On a mill, I'm good for 30-35 WPM. On a standard sized desktop keyboard, 30 is tops and will have typos. On a laptop or other smaller keyboard, I sort of top out at 20-25 ... or less depending on the keyboard. I really don't *know* why, but I suspect that the longer key travel forces a rhythm that syncs with the Morse. The worst of all keyboards to touch type on are the flat-panel ones with no key travel. Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 Hi PA current ?
Hi Don, Thank you for the information and input about OCF antennas. I did a measurement of the supply voltage to the KXPA100. here is what I Measure with my Fluke 77 meter: The voltage measurement was taken at the supply power plug from the amp that plugs into the KX3 to power it. I have the internal batteries installed in the KX3 so doing the test was easy. I am using an Alinco DM-330 MVP power supply with a very short cable run the the KXPA100. The supply voltage reads 15.1 volts without the amp or KX3 transmitting. With the power setting on the KX3 set to max 110 watts. When the KX3 is keyed and the amp is active I measure 14.6 volts. The voltage drop is not that big in my opinion. I have a 10 foot ground round sunk all the way down with a heavy braided cable less than a 6 foot run to a 1/4 inch thick brass 8x8 inch plate. I then have braided jumpers going to the KX3 and KXPA100 less than 8 inches from the brass plate to my equipment. What else should I do or look for? I have to say my Carolina Windom performs extremely well! [Elecraft] Is this normal? KX3 ACC2 IO Lockup
When going through the menus, if I try scrolling through the options for ACC2 IO and I get to LO=PTT, the radio freezes. I have to remove a battery to get it to shut down. Nothing is plugged in to the ACC2 jack.
