Re: [Elecraft] P3 Waterfall

2018-04-10 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
I recently saw this happen on W6NV's P3 after upgrading the firmware from a
very old version to the most recent version in one jump, or perhaps I
accidentally removed power from the back of the P3 while it was on, while
simultaneously bumping one of the front panel buttons. Reloading the
firmware and doing multiple power cycles did not fix it.

Instead, if you can get to the P3 menu, go to the RESET option and press
the knob.

Or, if the P3 Utility still talks to the P3, go to the command tester and
type:

#RST;

You may then find that the REF LEVEL is set way too high at 0 dB. Adjust
REF LEVEL back down to about -120 dB and it should be back to normal.

[Elecraft] K3S birdies?

2018-04-10 Thread Don Sayler
Hi All.

I've been monitoring this list for a while, and have gained some useful
insights from the posts. And now I have a question...

I built my K3S #11310 last July, and I added the 100 watt amp and sub-receiver
last December.

A few weeks ago, I started hearing some unusual tones around 14380 KHz and 7259
KHz. The tones are much louder on 14380 than on 7259. At 14380, I hear a
lower-pitched tone on 14279.80, and a higher pitched tone 14279.85. I hear both
of these with no antenna connected. On 40m, the tone is quiet enough that the
background noise overcomes the tone. But on 20m, the tones are quite loud. I
also hear the tones on the sub-receiver.

Prior to a few weeks ago, I'm certain these tones were not present. I saw the
thread from 2012 about moving cables around in a K3, but if there was a build
problem, wouldn't these sounds have appeared immediately? My routers are far
away from my shack, and there is no new equipment in the shack.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] P3 Waterfall

2018-04-10 Thread Fred Jensen
My P3 waterfall disappeared when I turned the rig on tonight.  WF Height
shows the line, and it moves with the knob, but no WF, just a very tall
spectrum display.  No SVGA. I'll maybe reload the FW tomorrow.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500,KPA500

2018-04-10 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You'll need a KXUSB (if your computer has USB hubs) or a KXSER (if your
computer has a true RS-232 port) or make up the equivalent. These are available
from Elecraft, on the product list (www.elecraft.com/elecraft_prod_list.htm)

The KAT500 has a very limited number of LEDs and buttons for user interface, so
most of the heavy lifting (configuration) requires the KAT500 Utility, and a
serial connection to the KAT500.

Your KAT500 connects to your PC for the KAT500 Utility. It doesn’t go through
the KPA500 for programming. The KPA500's serial connectors are for the Host PC
and a transceiver (primarily Kenwood), not a KAT500.

Subject: [Elecraft] KAT500,KPA500

Good evening everyone.
I just added a used KAT500 to my lineup (waiting for the KPA1500 backlog to
clear before I order) and it's working great.

The person that I purchase it from did not include the RS232 cable that has the
small data jack on the one end to program the KAT500.
I use one line to the coax switch at the tower so I need the KAT500 to remain
on the same antenna port. The previous owner used all of the antenna
connections so as I change bands on the K3, the KAT500 follows, as it should,
and selects the antenna port previously programmed.
I believe I am suppose to be able to program this manually but I'm not able to
get the antenna port to remain as I change bands.
My quesitonsCan I program the KAT500 through the PC connection to the
KPA500 (I haven't tried that yet)? Do I need to order the cable from Elecraft?
Can I do this manually and I just didn't follow the instructions correctly?
Thanks everyone.

Re: [Elecraft] Astron VS-35M Powwer Supply V-

2018-04-10 Thread Bill

Hi Joe,

You made a comment about "bolted" connections. I hope I understood you
correctly, as I now don't feel so bad about using old fashioned screw
terminal blocks for all DC power. I feel they provide solid, unmoving,
and permanent connections. I do not like the push on Power Poles, as I
flat do not trust them - too many failures. Many such from merely moving
a piece of equipment and slightly disturbing the wires. And, yes - I do
know how to put Power Pole connectors together properly.

Hence, with the exception of the required plugin on the K3 - I do not
use them any longer. That plugin has a fixed strain relief installed on
it - in case I move the rig a tenth of an inch.

Bonus: No expensive plugs or tools required!

You *DO NOT WANT* the station bonding ("ground") and the V- rail to
be interconnected. If you allow that to happen, particularly at
the transceiver and power supply, the station ground becomes an
alternate return for the high current pulses during transmit.

When the station bonding is allowed to "float" with the high current
pulses any other accessory connected to the bonding (particularly
"linear" bonding) sees a varying ground reference level which
contributes to "RF feedback" as that varying reference "pumps"
(excites) any pin 1 problem in the device.

Keep all of the transmitter power supply return current confined to
the power cable between the rig and the power supply. Make sure all
power supply connections are tight and all power cords as short as
possible. Always use the largest practical wire for all power cords.
If possible, use twisted pair cables, *bolted* connections (like
on the Astron RS/VS series power supplies) and multiple, parallel
pin connections in any power connectors.

Hi Paul,

I'm probably the source of this, although W8JI and W4TV have also raised
this issue. See comments below.

Yes, VERY important.

But there is also a small black wire that bonds the V- terminal to the case.
Should the paint around that screw also be removed?

Yes, IF you want to bond V-.

Does that negative rail need to be bonded to the chassis?

No, and in general, it should NOT be bonded.

AND proper station bonding is quite important.

Study http://k9yc.com/GroundingAndAudio.pdf  and/or N0AX's new ARRL book
on the subject, which parallels my work. (My slide show pdf is free.) :)
