Jim,

You are remembering it incorrectly. The 1, 2, 5, and 10 buttons only turn
on SPLIT.

I had the same problems. Switched back to 5.38 and the problems went away.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Using Linux - OT

2016-07-31 Thread Anthony Scandurra
Mike,

WINE = *W*ine *I*s *N*ot an *E*mulator

You don't run Windows in WINE. You run Windows programs that are then
presented the Windows APIs by WINE. Think of WINE as a translator, not an
emulator.

I otherwise agree with your sentiment.

I prefer to run apps in their native environment. Once my favorite
programs DXLab and N1MM+ are able to run in Linux natively, I will switch
to Linux in a heartbeat!

Re: [Elecraft] Need advice on Small Tower

2016-07-12 Thread Anthony Scandurra
Terry,

If you check out my QRZ page, you'll note that I have a USTower TMM-541SS
with a Yaesu G1000DXA rotator and a Force12 XR6 topping it off.

https://www.qrz.com/db/K4QE

The antenna is at 47 feet AGL and it covers 20 thru 6 with one coax.

The TMM-541SS nests down to 12 feet, and I also have the tilt-over kit.

I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about it.

Re: [Elecraft] THE EFFORT OF FIELD DAY

2016-06-27 Thread Anthony Scandurra
I am happy to report that my 11 year old son, who plays on a PS4, a Xbox,
and his own computer, participated in FD at my local club's operation for
his first time.

He made 63 Qs with help from Dear Old Dad on the GOTA station. He is also
studying for his Technician class license.

He said over and over again, "Best weekend ever!" to both his mother and
me. He's already planning for next year.

BTW, we had two other youths at the site who have been hams for years now.
They both have very active lives outside of ham radio, but they still love
the hobby.

Don't give up on our youth! Ham radio still holds appeal!

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Beta Firmware Issue with DX Labs

2016-03-20 Thread Anthony Scandurra
I just updated my P3 to the beta firmware. The symptom Gary described also
occurs here after I switch between SVGA data mode on/off. I find that I
now have to power cycle the P3 to get CW decode to begin flowing data to
Commander->WinWarbler again.

I did not have to perform a P3 power cycle when switching between SVGA data
on/off in the current production firmware.

Re: [Elecraft] Koss SB-45 Headset, update on comfort

For you DXpeditioners, it should be noted that the Koss SB-45 folds up
quite nicely for easier packing. See the Koss website's photos of them in
the folded up configuration.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Popping noise in headphones??

2015-10-18 Thread Anthony Scandurra
The clicks are there regardless of the level of the AF gain setting. The
loudness of the clicks is affected by the AF gain setting, but they are
still there.

I'm using a Yamaha CM500 headset.

It is the strongest when moving between the 0.10 and 0.15 bandwidth
setting, but also occurs going between 0.15 and 0.20.

handling time means the company donates that money from their budget

I too noticed the cost of shipping when I ordered the two KSYN3A and

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Good time to buy Begali products

2015-01-25 Thread Anthony Scandurra
That is incorrect. The purchase price is directly affected by the exchange
rate. They even provide a link to xe.com on their website so you can
figure out the actual cost in $USD. Be aware that there is still an
exchange rate fee charged by your bank when you make the transaction, so
the final cost will still be higher than the price calculated in xe.com.

The case is clearly not sealed. Notice the gaps on all four sides of the

 Hi Ken, list,

I looked that the Go Box concept a while ago and agree; The problem with
the idea is that the KX3 uses the case back for all it's PA heatsinking.
In the KX3 case design the front-half of the clamshell case is almost
completely thermally disconnected from the case back (only the thumbscrew
area is in contact), and cannot remove PA heat by conduction. In the Go
Box concept the front panel is the only thing exposed to ambient air flow.
If the back part of the case was to be sealed in a closed cavity or
encased in foam, heat build-up would be inevitable. The Go Box idea may
not kill the KX3's performance (drift, thermal limitations) if the KX3 is
only used as a receiver or very low duty-cycle operation. Of course, one
could put a fan in the box, but here we go again, killing the KX3's most
hard-won and fantastic attributes: low power consumptio
n, no moving parts and no acoustic noise.

 Howie - WA4PSC

How about heat dissipation if the intent is to operate the radio
in the box and encased in foam?

 KPA500 off (AC cord disconnected)

 Results:
KAT500 switched on, Mode = auto, ANT = 1, no antenna connected: *S4 birdie
on 28004.5 kHz* measured by K3

 test 1:
 - Changing ANT connector on K3: birdie gone.
 - Change antennaconnected on K3 back: birdie S4 again
 - Change to other antennaconnectors on KAT500 makes very little
difference: 0.3dB Measured on dBV meter of K3 with AGC off
 - Disconnecting the elecraft interface cables makes NO difference. Keep
 them disconnected for further tests.

 test 2:
 - Switch off KAT500 (hold mode switch): birdie drops 0.5dB
 - Disconnect DC from KAT500: birdie is gone. (proof that is has to do with
 the KAT500)

 test 3:
 - KAT500 switched on again
 - Connect dummyload on ANT 1 of KAT500 with KAT500 on: birdielevel goes UP
+2dB (as compared to no dummyload connected in tests 1 and 2). S-meter now
now has gone up to S5.
 - then switch off KAT500: birdielevel drops DOWN -10.5dB
 - switch off KAT500: birdie gone

 Can anyone reproduce this?

I have not checked all other frequencies, so this might be the only one.
Still this is a birdie that I cannot ignore.

My first question: was one supposed to come with the KPA500? If so, I

 ordering that.

Second question: is the USB to Serial cable needed by the KPA500 the same

you order that particular cable or is there something listed for each rig

 Thanks for clarification.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Tuning issue

2012-12-08 Thread Anthony Scandurra K4QE
You don't need to add 8 foot wires for 10 meters. The 80 meter dipole will
load up there with a little help from the tuner.

73, Tony K4QE

On Sat, Dec 8, 2012 at 7:27 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire r...@cobi.biz wrote:

If you want to use your 40 meter dipole on 20 meters, one way is to add two
16 foot wires at the center feed point, putting a 20 meter dipole in
parallel with the 40 meter dipole. On 40 the extra 16 foot wires will
 simply
make the radiator look a bit fatter to the RF. On 20, the 40 meter dipole
exhibits a very high impedance at the feed point (which is what is causing
your problem now) while the 20 meter dipole will present a decent match.

Your 40 meter dipole already makes a decent 15 meter antenna because it's 3
half waves long, with a relatively decent match at the feed point.

In the extreme you could add a 120 foot wire paralleled wire so the system
will cover 80, 40, 20 and 15 meters and a pair of 8 foot wires to cover 10
meters to make it an 80/40/20/15/10 meter system.

That was a common multi-band antenna before the WARC bands were opened. The
mismatch is much greater on the WARC bands because they are not
harmonically-related to the others. Even though your tuner may produce a
good load to the transmitter, feed line losses can get rather high.

Ideally you want to fan the wires to the ends are as far apart as possible,
but even several inches or a foot or so will work.

Understand that a 2:1 or worse SWR is common even though the wires are cut
to 1/2 wavelength due to interaction between them, but the losses should
 not
be serious over a typical run of good quality coax.

When the tuner (at the radio) gets an acceptable match, that just
means the transmitter will _think_ there is a good antenna system out
there. The feedline between the antenna and the tuner will know
otherwise and can have points of very high voltage that could cause
insulation breakdown, and points of very high current that can cause
overheating and will be a source of power loss. This isn't really a
problem in QRP operations, but when you head into the QRO world it can
make a difference. The antenna also has issues. In an earlier post
K3KO had the calculated feedpoint impedance, and it was very far from
the 'nominal' 50 ohms of your feedline or the ~75 ohms of a dipole at
altitude. W6GF also gave this info in terms of SWR to show how bad it
was. All in all a resonant 40M dipole makes an unhappy antenna system
  on 20 meters.

I understand that if that is all you have you're stuck with it, but it
is really time to consider something else. Maybe a fan dipole, or trap
  dipole?

An OS, by itself, is useless without user level tools and applications.

When considering Windows vs. Mac OS vs. Linux, you must consider what apps you
intend to use with it.

I am a UNIX/Linux bigot. I also like MacOS. But, I use Windows in my ham shack.

Windows is, by far, the most well supported platform for ham radio
applications. Yes, I could run them in a virtual machine or an emulator in
another OS, but why?

Don't pick your OS first. Choose the apps you want first and see what the
common denominator OS is among those applications. Chances are it will be
Windows.

Don't play religion with OSes. You will be doing yourself a BIG disservice. Be

Re: [Elecraft] k3 and field day

2012-05-11 Thread Anthony Scandurra K4QE
David,

This applies to ANY competition class radio, not just the K3.

I strongly recommend AGAINST bringing out your radio out unless you know for
a fact that those who will be using it know how to use it already.

If it is a free-for-all, you should only take out a radio that is
dead-simple to operate like an ICOM IC-718, a Yaesu FT-840, or a Yaesu
FT-747.

Otherwise, you will be constantly be asked questions and/or really
frustrating operators. Even worse, they might get the radio into some state
rendering it unusable (yes, it DOES happen) and without a quick resolution
because you won't know exactly what they changed.

Sorry, but it is really not worth your trouble unless you know the operators
are K3-aware.

Subject: [Elecraft] k3 and field day

I will have my k3 at Field Day this year and would like a little
advice.I will have the Yamaha cm500, a hand held mic plus a set
of paddles. It will have one multiband antenna. plus a will
periodically be connected to a beam when its available.

Since it will also be used by several other ops that probably wont
know the K3 I would like to set it up as user friendly as possible and
lock out as much as possible in the menus to prevent it from being
messed up.

What settings have others used in this situation. and what
precautions are there? and any other thoughts please.

Please answer to the reflector and not directly to me.
